Tildas Islands #2

Night Deception

Rate this book
From the award-winning author of The Windsor Series comes the second Tildas Island mystery:

When treason isn’t enough

Isiah Clarke may be a former Navy SEAL, but now that he’s retired, he’s more than happy to be passing his time tending to the bar he owns on Tildas Island. That is, until a former teammate sends him a message asking for help in finding and protecting an elusive CIA asset. Isiah can’t ignore what may be his teammate’s last wish and, reluctantly, he turns to FBI agent Alexis Wright—a woman who’s been under his skin since the first time she walked into his bar seven months earlier.

For Alexis, there’s no question she’ll help the former SEAL find the asset. Especially when the information from Isiah’s teammate alludes to a threat to the upcoming Summit of World Leaders—a gathering she and her team are responsible for ensuring the safety of.

But when the straightforward mission to protect the spy throws Isiah and Alexis into a world of deception, depravity, and treason, placing faith and trust in each other—something that doesn’t come naturally to either—becomes vital.
Because it will take more than just their skills to get them out alive.

Tamsen Schultz is the author of several romantic suspense novels and American Kin (a short story published in Line Zero Magazine). In addition to being a writer, she has a background in the field of international conflict resolution, has co-founded a non-profit, and currently works in corporate America. Like most lawyers, she spends a disproportionate amount of time thinking (and writing) about what it might be like to do something else. She lives in Northern California in a house full of males including her husband, two sons, three cats, a dog, and a gender-neutral, but well-stocked, wine rack.

This is a well-written, entertaining, fast paced, steamy romantic suspense novel. It has likable, engaging, well developed, interesting and diverse characters, a strong and capable female protagonist, a heart-warming romance, a lovely setting, an intriguing mystery, and a happily ever after ending. This is the second entry in Ms. Schultz's outstanding Tildas Island series, and it works well as a stand alone, but is better when read in order. I am looking forward to reading the next novel in this series with great anticipation.

The warm-scented night air on Tildas Island is masking the danger and mystery that is swirling around the island of late. And speaking of mystery – Isiah Clarke is intrigued by the tall, gorgeous woman who steals into his bar every once in a while, and in the process steals his attention away from everything else. Who is she? From where does she come? Even a cryptic message from his former SEAL mate/ now-CIA operative does not fully pull him away from musing about his gorgeous bar patron.

Alexis Wright certainly knows who Isiah is and what his background is – her family ensured they all knew it. But like a moth to a flame, Alexis is drawn to The Shack for more than just the double-finger pour. As these two dance a bit around each other, there is one intense situation ready to pull the FBI agent and former SEAL into its grip.

As the Tildas series kicked off, Alexis was the mysterious one of the group of FBI agents gathered on the island to observe and prepare for the major global summit occurring on Tildas in the coming year. With model looks, an aloof manner and impeccable skills, she held herself back from her fellow comrades. But the minute Isiah plays her the recording his old friend sent him, Alexis begins to unfurl like a blossom, bit by bit sharing her background with her fellow agents and Isiah. Equally as fascinating but all too horrific in its reality is the situation, they find themselves in, which takes them to the jungles of Honduras and a chase to find an elusive CIA asset that may be in danger. This author brilliantly weaves Alexis and Isiah’s romance with the escalating suspense of the case and possible links to Tildas and the coming Summit. The gentle lulls in the story only serve to rachet up the thrills in a read that truly is the definition of romantic suspense. And of course, as satisfying as the ending in, there still is that craving for more – more about this FBI group and its mission, more Tildas Island, more of these characters. I cannot wait for the next book!

Not bad

This book is better than most you get free or cut rate online. It does have a fairly coherent plot and likable characters. Note that it is part of a series with a large cast of characters so it’s a little hard to follow and keep the characters straight, at least the 2 with very similar names.

In my opinion, as a reader of mysteries, spy and cop stories, I would like to see the author tighten up the plot, and work on building the suspense and improving the pacing. This story, while not bad, was more or less a string of events that were related to one another but that don’t really hang together as a complete story, possibly because it’s part of a series, but it came across as jumpy and with way too many coincidences and improbabilities. But, I will also say that unlike many romantic suspense stories, the key couple’s relationship was pretty much secondary to the action and was not, thankfully, related in graphic physical detail. So it wasn’t just soft porn with a vague plot but it also wasn’t a tightly constructed thriller.

Basically the author, in my opinion, seemed to cram too much into a single story. It isn’t necessary for both of the main characters to have difficult, traumatic pasts or for several different crimes and the related enforcement actions to all be in a single installment of the series. The emotional aspects were unrealistically quickly resolved and the criminal activities were also rather simplistically presented, just a string of actions and reactions without giving insight into how either the CIA or FBI might actually operate.

In closing I want to say that writing a single book is a huge task and writing a series even more so. Congrats to the author for the effort and result. I am hopeful that as she progresses she will continue to hone her craft. My criticism is sincerely intended to be helpful as she develops her skills.

Night Deception is the second of Tamsen Schultz's Tildas Island series, it also links to her previous Windsor Series. As with all of her other books, this series is an almost perfect blend of thriller and romance. I've said before in previous reviews, but it's rare for a book to get the balance so right. usually, a book is either a thriller with a side serving of romance or a romance with a slight thriller edge. Night Deception is neither of these things but manages to be a fully-fledged version of both genres.
This book deals with FBI agent Alexis and former SEAL and now bar owner Isiah. They have felt a strong attraction between them for some time, but Isiah has made it clear that he isn't interested, not wanting a brief fling with someone he assumes doesn't live locally. Things change when it becomes clear that Alexis is local. He also finds a mystery thrown into his lap that he needs her help to get to the bottom of.
This is where the thriller aspect of the story kicks in. An old friend and colleague of Isiah's contacts him and asks for help finding and helping a spy. Alexis and her team are drawn into help, not least because it somehow seems to connect to the work that they are all there to do on Tildas Island.
This was a great and gripping read that I devoured quickly once I started. As I mentioned the romance and action is well balanced. I think if you like either or both genres you would get a great deal from this book. I certainly did. These first two books have been a good strong start to this new series and I'm excited to see where it is going to go next.

Night Deception is a great addition to this series! If you've enjoyed any of Tamsen Schultz's previous books, you'll want to pick up this one.

Isaiah and Alexis were fabulous as the primary characters. I definitely enjoyed learning more about them and about their backstories. The setting is well, delicious, as only a small, tropical island can be. I pretty much wanted to move there by the time this book was over except for ya know, the crime rate! *laughing* All fueled by one particular author and upcoming huge event that will take place on Tildas Island.

Tightly woven plot, great characters and a wonderful team that works together and has each other's back tells you you're reading another great story by Tamsen Schultz. I definitely recommend Night Deception.

Thank you to the publisher and author for an ARC. All thoughts are my own and happily given.

Night Deception is the story of former Navy SEAL Isiah Clarke, now retired and happily running a bar on Tildas Island.

When Isiah receives a message from a former teammate asking his help in locating an elusive CIA operative, he turns to FBI agent Alexis Wright for help.

Together with her team, Isiah and Alexis set out to find the mysterious “Gentleman” and along the way, uncover a human trafficking ring.

There’s mystery, suspense, action, and romance and the book kept me intrigued. While this is the second of the Tildas Island series, I had no trouble following the story. The climactic moment was a “bit” unbelievable and there were some loose ends which I hope will be resolved in a future book. Otherwise, I would have given this one five stars.

I don't understand how Tamsen keeps doing it, but yet again she did it!

The story is about the FBI team again, just like part 1. Unexpected things, keeping you hooked, I honestly couldn't put it down and kept reading and reading.

If you don't know Tamsen yet, be sure to try out this book, better yet, start with part one. Or even better yet, read the Puppeteer and the Windsor series after that. You won't be disappointed. Each and every single book is a story in its own right and you won't be able to put the book away until you're finished. Leaving you wanting for me. It keeps you surprised, and I feel like her books are very well researched where it needs to be.

You could be excused for being a bit lost for some of this book if you have not read the preceding books. There is a lot of stories some of the characters have told elsewhere. But if you keep things straight in your own mind, it should not be a problem.

We have a female FBI agent running a team in the Bahamas. We also have some CIA agents doing their thing. Sometimes they cooperate, sometimes there are problems. Sort of like real life. We also have a former SEAL and some rescue puppies. There are also sex slaves, rogue agents and a Gentleman. There is action aplenty and enough byplay to add some humor.

Working with a team is about trust and connections

After a near lethal experience when she was young, FBI agent Alexis is leery of revealing too much about herself or letting people get too close to her- even her own team.

Isaiah mistakenly assumes Alexis is just a rich tourist when she first comes into the bar former SEAL Isiah owns.

Intense drama, tests of faith and trust, and lots of action follow.

Added into the mix are some explosions and foster doggies

A action packed thriller with some interesting people connections

Isiah is drawn to the woman who has come into his bar but decided not to pursue as he thought she was a tourist. That is, until she came back months later and had a bruised face. His protective instincts rise to the surface and he is intrigued by this beauty. Especially once he finds out just how tough she can be. When Isiah finds himself embroiled in a situation, can Alexis and her team help the former seal? Can they figure out who can be trusted, before it's too late? Read and find out!!!

Great addition to this series! I am looking forward to the next one!

Mystery, intrigue, suspense, and more make this second book in the new Tildas Island series one not to be missed! This story features Alexis and Isiah and the chemistry is off the charts. Budding romance collides with a case Alexis' team is drawn into. I love how the author wraps up each individual plot in a satisfying way while still tying things together and leading into an overall series arc. I read this one in one sitting. I was completely engaged and invested from beginning to end. I love all the members of the team but I can't wait for Jake's story!

Night Deception, Tildas Island book 2 picks up where book 1 ended...mystery beauty enters bar... Alexis, secretive one of the 5 member FBI team...her secrets revealed.

Using Alexis, author, Tamsen Schultz cleverly joins a retired Navy SEAL with the team, adds a little romance, and creates a nonstop, outstanding page turner.

Must read, Tildas Island has the best FBI agents and action I’ve read. This is an ARC, I would read anyway,my honest review.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, and I'm very glad to see characters from that story appear in this book, along with the new characters and the plot.

I cannot think of a book that Tamsen Schultz has written badly, and I believe I've read them all. I've been a fan since the very first book of hers that I read.

You will probably want to read the first book before you begin this one: it will reward you with some background and will add to your reading pleasure!

Another intriguing riveting read from Tamsen this time in the Tildas Island series. Handsome ex-SEALS, FBI agents with attitudes and thrilling story line. I don’t hesitate to recommend it - Probable more enjoyable if you read A Fiery Whisper First (book 1) And Oh Yes! I am looking forward to book 3

“Night Deception “ is not just another book in a series it’s the best book in the Tildas Island series so far. So, if that trend continues we’re in for further superb reading. As a vehicle for enjoyment it has good characters, mystery, action, a little romance, and murder. What more could you ask for?

This is a fast and very interesting read, part of the Tildas island series. It is a bit busy though. Lots of pieces and divergent storylines. Alexis had a traumatic past; Isiah had a traumatic past. The action here, or at least part of it, is traumatic.
And in the midst of rescuing trafficking victims, catching traitors and dodging bombs, Alexis and Isiah admit their chemistry and fall in love.

Excellent spy, FBI, mystery, romance

This book is so good! The characters are varied, interesting, smart, loyal, and very likable. The mystery is complex and enjoyable. The romance adds some sauce. Some of the ends are not tied up and will flow into the next book. Very entertaining book!

Isiah, ex SEAL and now a bar owner, with Alexis, CIA, make a dynamic duo once they decide to work together. Alexis has a team, many surprises and much history to add to the mix.
This is definitely a thriller with some romance thrown in.

enjoyable mystery + romance

This book combines my favorite thing (romance) with a mystery. It also happens within a great group of people that have already been introduced, so it’s like visiting old friends with each new story.
