About the author

Scotty Morrison (Ngati Whakaue) is the well-known presenter of Maori current affairs programmes 'Te Karere' and 'Marae Investigates'. He holds a Diploma of Teaching, Bachelor of Education and Masters degree (Education) from Waikato University, and is currently working towards his PhD at Massey University. Scotty has been an Adjunct Professor and the Director of Maori Student and Community Engagement at Auckland's Unitec Institute of Technology, where he continues to promote te reo Maori through awareness, administration and specialised courses.

Born and raised in Rotorua, he now lives in Auckland with his wife Stacey Morrison and their children, Hawaiki, Kurawaka and Maiana.

Kei te ako āhau i te reo Māori

This has taken me a year to finish but more so in the last 6 months. I bought the accompanying workbooks 1 - 4 and used these in conjunction with the audiobook. The audio book is 30 hours long so each chapter takes approximately 2 hours if doing it with the workbook.

Now that I have finished with the workbooks, I'm planning to listen to the audio again from the beginning without doing the exercises again.

I also attend night classes so this has been something extra to do and help me with my learning.

A manageable way to learn te reo Māori at home. The content is easy to follow and split into 30-minute sessions. Do a session every day and your proficiency will steadily increase.

Well, technically I'm not finished as this book covers nearly a year's worth of learning. But it's time to return the library book! Might get my own copy - really great little book and I've learned a lot already :)

No numbered rating. On the one hand I'm enjoying it and learning a lot, but it's also pretty low quality in a lot of ways.

The exercises consistently ask you to do things you haven't been taught: mostly asking you to use vocabulary that isn't in the book, but also fairly often to reproduce points of grammar that haven't been explained. A lot of the exercises got messed up in the editing process as well. There are some with more answers than questions, or picture-based ones with answers that clearly don't relate to the published picture. I also found one or two errors in the English grammar, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

I'd still recommend it though. Better than most of the competition I've seen, and on a very handy single volume.

This is such an excellent book - I have both the hard copy and the Audible version of the book.
Sooo… please remember I attempt to familiarise myself with Te Reo every year,
and will remain forever endeavouring fluency,
ergo…. Māori Made Easy by Scotty Morrison lives in my currently reading pile :-)

To my friends, this is how I’ve spent my year and it’s been great. I’m not recommending this for all to read but you can try if you wish. The more I have learnt, the more I am engraved by the lyrical culture of the Maori language.

I listened to the audio book and it was great.

Id recommend doing a basic te reo course before listening to the book, to learn basic pronunciation, sentence structure and pronouns. It will make the learning easier.

Good book, possibly would’ve felt better if I hadn’t already read the dark Tower. Not sure how I feel about the overlapping of these worlds. Sorry if it’s a spoiler
