Red Rising Series Collection 5 Books Set Bundle By Pierce Brown (Red Rising, Golden Son, Morning Star, Iron Gold, Dark Age):

Red Rising:
Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

Dark Age:
“Brown’s plots are like a depth charge of nitromethane dropped in a bucket of gasoline. His pacing is 100% him standing over it all with a lit match and a smile, waiting for us to dare him to drop it.”—NPR (Best Books of the Year)

Golden Son:
As a Red, Darrow grew up working the mines deep beneath the surface of Mars, enduring backbreaking labor while dreaming of the better future he was building for his descendants. But the Society he faithfully served was built on lies.

Morning Star:
Darrow would have lived in peace, but his enemies brought him war. The Gold overlords demanded his obedience, hanged his wife, and enslaved his people. But Darrow is determined to fight back. Risking everything to transform himself and breach Gold society.

Iron Gold:
They call him father, liberator, warlord, Slave King, Reaper. But he feels a boy as he falls toward the war-torn planet, his armor red, his army vast, his heart heavy. It is the tenth year of war and the thirty-third of his life.

Hello. I'm Pierce Brown, the author of the Red Rising Saga, a NYT #1 bestseller.
I figured I'd write you myself than have corporate copy pasted below my totally natural author photo.

In my books you'll find stories of men and women finding their inner strength when all seems lost. You'll also find me exploring themes of love, violence, hope, and power--what it means, why people seek it, and how they hold onto it.

Digestion: Audiobook (Narrator has an accent) +++
Overall opinion: I enjoyed it
Digestion time: 13 days
Did I stay up till 3am reading it? No
Did it make me cry? No, but I did feel the sorrow he felt and the anger
Would I recommend it to others? Yes

I thought the plot was good. I was rooting for the main character and felt his sorrow, but it didn’t have me crying. I would have loved to have felt that pain all the way to my tear ducts, but maybe a lack of connection with those characters? There were times I was pissed off along with the MC and was angry at the turn of events. There were a couple of places where I guessed what was coming next and a couple spots where I was surprised. If you liked Hunger Games, the injustice, fighting to survive, and want corrupt governments to crumble, this book is for you.

Here are my muddled reviews of my fav books:

Red rising:
•picked up because I got the sense that I would feel the feels I felt with scythe
•a commentary on the consumerism of our culture which I adore because that is one of my biggest passions, helping people wake up to see that they don’t need to be consumers and they don’t need to waste their lives scrolling or being distracted. That there’s more that matters
•chapter 36 made me love and respect Darrow so much.

Golden son:
Chapter 10: Heartbreaking. Also I kinda hate Eo.

Political intrigue. Mystery. Suspense. Hope. Romance. Love. Hate. Heartbreak. Sadness. War.

Loved this one even more. My favorite so far.

5✨

Morning son:
Slow start but if you can get past the first 170 pages you’ll be golden.

Chp. 30. Oh man. I was crying through it and I don’t cry at books. A beautiful death for a beautiful soul.

Chp. 54. Chills

Chp. 57/58. *cuts my hand, sucks blood, spits* this is my official blood feud with Pierce Brown on the grounds of breaking my heart for the hundredth time

“If ever again we meet, you are mine or I am yours. If ever again we draw breath in the same room, one breath shall cease. Hear me now, you wretched worm. We are devils to one another till one rots in hell.”

End of book: never mind. I apologize Pierce.

Iron gold:
It took me about 130 pages to get into it and get used to multiple pov but now I love it!
I love lyria’s storyline and the telemanus’ are always my favorites
It took me about 350 pages to love it as much as the others. It was very slow. I understand because the original trilogy basically closed and there was setup needed in this story line. But once I was past that I flew through this book
As I said, it took me awhile to get on board with the multiple pov but man does pierce brown do it beautifully! Each pov, though different opinions and views has me rooting for them and convinced that they are in the right. There doesn’t seem to be bias of pulling of you to root for one or the other. They are all just excellent stories.
This is a little more crude and sexual and has a bit more language than the prior three books. Decent amount of f-bombs which weren’t in the original trilogy
Chp. 59 makes me love mustang even more.
Chp. 65 I usually hate the main character. But I love Darrow. He’s always been one of my favs (with mustang and sevro (over time)). And even here now, when he’s not living up to what he should be. When he’s making choices I hate, I can’t help but love the guy. And pitty him. I wish he could be the man he wants to be. I wish he didn’t hate himself so much.
I will always be shocked that sevro turned out to be a better father and dad than Darrow. How the tables have turned.
4.75✨ my least favorite so far because of how slow the first half is and the crudeness/language but still so good.

Dark age:

Again a lot more cussing and crude talk. I get it as it comes from the depths of war. But it does feel like we’re breaking the universe made a bit. The first few books had no f-bombs. They used “bloody/gory ——“ now there are a lot of f-bombs and rarely used bloody or gory and it feels like a slight breaking in the universe.

First half of the book took me so long to get through. I loved only a few parts. I was getting discouraged. It felt that 2/3rds of it shouldn’t have been in it and I longed for the original trilogy. I I’ve high stakes and lots of action and this has felt really slow.

Then chapter 48. Horror. I’m intrigued again.

The f bombs are really bugging me. They’re so unnecessary. I don’t like that kind of language but even more than that it really feels that it breaks the cannon of the universe as said earlier.

Ulysses. I’m not ok. Like honestly feeling depressed. I’ve been sad about other parts but this one hit me to my core. Probably because I have two young kids of my own right now but man.

Alex?! You’re breaking my heart.

85/86 This battle. So good!!

WHAT!? CASSIUS?!

Chapter 89 at the very end there’s one very minor 1/4th of a page sex scene. Easy to skip but I’m disappointed in this addition and hope that there’s no more of this in the next two books.

Not me hoping that lightbringer brings light and everyone I love comes back to life like Cassius.

4.5✨

Lightbringer:

Love this quote:

Cassius is confused by the exchange. "Were you two in touch these last weeks? You're acting like you share a secret language all of a sudden.
"Isn't that always the case with those who've read the same books?" Aurae says with a little mischief.

I find it weird that suddenly Darrow and Cassius are best friends. I don’t love when authors throw something random and unconnected like that in.

I’m loving this book. It feels like we’re back to the original trilogy. And far less cursing so far. Thank you pierce.

I forgot how much I loved the comedic lighthearted aspects that’s we lost in the last two books. And I love the dynamic of Cassius and Darrow. Feels like we’re back at the institute. I mourn for who Sevro was though and hope he gets his light back.

NO CASSIUS. LYSANDER YOU COWARD

I find it a little weird how obsessed Darrow is with Cassius given their history. Maybe there just wasn’t enough shown of their new friendship being created. And maybe as a woman I just can’t understand how men can try to kill eachother, steal eachothers women and then be best friends?

I’ve loved this book even with the cringy dialogue sometimes. I am ready for this series to come to an end. As much as I love it. It’s become my favorite series but I’m ready for my beloved friends (Darrow, Sevro, Victra, Virginia, the Telemanus’) to have some peace.

This is my top two favorite series. I love how the progression of each book matures for the reader and characters. Something I truly enjoyed with this series was how it was a digestible sci-fi. It gets more dry as the series goes but even after 6 books I am itching for a 7th.
