Kyla Nim has left home to seek her role in the World of Order. Hoping to become an animal designer like Eunoe, the motherly alseid, or a plant singer like Aspen, the kind dryad, or carry the winds like Aura, proud Daughter of the Air, Kyla soon finds herself assigned the humble role of a messenger. At first disappointed, she soon finds herself on a series of adventures that run her afoul of Erebus, the god of darkness, and his army of Avowed disciples.

Frustrated that no one takes her seriously, and determined to prevent Erebus' endless night, Kyla embarks on a quest to stop the assault of dark forces that threaten to bathe the world in eternal darkness.

About the author

Bryant Reil

Bryant's fascination with fantasy and storytelling began at a play in the gymnasium of a small school in the village of Rosemary, Alberta, Canada. In this play, the main character encountered a talking wall, of all things! which blew four-year-old Bryant's mind. He became an avid reader, and in elementary school he particularly loved Lloyd Alexander's 'Chronicles of Prydain', and perhaps developed a bit of a school-boy crush on Princess Eilonwy. Years later he decided to write books of his own, and after a few false starts opted to self-publish after discovering that agents and publishers were really into love triangles at the time, and he wasn't into writing them. So the breath of life was given to Elf Mastery, which led to the sequels, Elf Doubt and Elf Righteous, as well as Loveless Amends, which was written in two weeks for NaNoWriMo 2020.

Bryant's goals have now shifted from writing books to creating animated series. Will this dream come to pass? Stay tuned to find out!

A Rockstar Book!

I adore this book so much!

Adventurous, entertaining and beautifully written!

Kayla, an elf who is going to be away from her family for the first time and leave for college. She's a talkative protagonist and keeps the reader amazed. To survive in this world, she has to overcome her complex fears and confront the unknown.

I would give full marks to this book because even though it was a YA Fantasy, it had its originality with itself. Twists and turns at almost each chapters keeps you engaged with it. It teaches you a lot. Friendship, Morals everything in a single package. What else could have anyone asked for?

Fluid writing style will keep you bounded to it for quite a long while. Mythological viewpoint of Elf Mastery was one more reason for my likeness for it.

I loved this book at many levels. Its writing style, pace, plot and the characters - all of them was nothing less than awesome. But more than anything else, this book was written in an intelligent manner. One could see the thinking level of the creator of this fantastic project.

Highly developed characters and fast paced story got me hooked with it and there's more. All these characters are seriously related to everyone else I've once or twice interacted. They were so likable.

If there is going to be one book I would read for one more time, this would be it. There is so much waiting for the next book!! This is so not fair!

A Fantasy novel that I'd like to read again and again!

I received a copy of this book to be honestly reviewed.

I really liked this! While a mission with different races of magical beings is nothing new, I always enjoy the new intricacies and relationships among the characters. And talk about development! Kyla isn't your typical heroine. She starts off a bit ditzy and clueless, never having experienced the world at large before. And she seems to be a bit clumsy on top of it. She makes her few friends and frenemies pretty quickly, but keeps to her small circle as she tries to find her way in the world, and she felt authentic in those aspects. She grows in strength and character as the story goes on, and she's a character that I think I’ll remember

ALL the characters were well written, and the writing itself is smooth and has a good pace and flow to it. It was really easy for me to get lost in their world, to root for the under dogs and yell at them when they needed it. My kids gave me that weird look they get because on occasion I laughed out loud! The tense moments had me holding my breath, and the fights were thrilling for me, as well. It was just a really great book over all.
If you or a younger reader (Teen – YA, but still fun for us old farts!), I strongly suggest you snag a copy of this and dive in. I feel like this could be a fun family movie someday.

Bob says: 4-4.5 Platypires

I was incredibly lucky to beta read this book. From the moment I started reading I was hooked. Bryant has created this wonderfully imaginative world with little treasures hidden without. Throw in a spunky elf, adventure and a subtle sense of humor and you have a recipe for a good read. I can't wait for the next one!

Kudos Bryant!

Author Bryant Reil creates a young elf coming of age fantasy. Kyla is the primary protagonist, who embarks on university learning at Equinox to find her lifework. The diverse university offers courses to all sorts of creatures, including nymphs, dryads, elves, demons, dwarfs, air spirits, and, my favorite being, earth elementals.

Kyla is an adventuresome, impulsive, and reckless elf who is anxious about life in general. Her end goal is not to follow in her father's footsteps. Kyla views herself as someone fun to know and a good friend, yet that is not how she is viewed by others. Her goal is to fit in, and yet that is her biggest challenge.

Lug, the earth elemental, has a sensitive side. The author developed this character quickly and provided relatable attributes. Lug's ability to trust a new relationship is positive until Kyla doesn't support the budding friendship when a bully is introduced.

Kyla is ill-prepared for school. She samples various courses that, for one reason or another, do not fit her abilities. With each class, she learns something about what she doesn't want to do. Aura, Kyla's roommate, is an air spirit who controls the wind.

The variety of characters and subplots makes this fantasy suitable for the younger crowd. Imagination is the focus of this story, with a correlation for explaining the world's natural occurrences. Aura, the air spirit learning to control the wind, explains the shifts in wind currents and direction. The creatures at the center of the earth, where Kyla first met Lug, details the job of the earth's rotation.

Of particular note is the ego's involved with each of the characters. Those who are the best in one category or another have no issues touting their abilities. Kyla tries nearly everything, even when worried about failing. She picks herself up and keeps trying different things. With a passion for rocks that hold memories of events, Kyla leads with her heart. Her growth throughout the story provides inspiration for younger readers.

There are many characters in this story. Listening to the narration, the various voices were not differentiated enough to truly engage. There are no real problems with the quality of the audible itself, but the personality of the story was not enhanced by Merphy Napier's performance. I didn't feel the energy of the words as much as I would have preferred. It is a technically sound audible listen. With more vital character voices and emphasis on the different scenes, fantastic could have been achieved.

I can recommend this magical story to the younger crowd and young at heart.

Thank you so much to the author for allowing me to listen to the audio book for free. This did not sway my opinion of the book.

First this book was narrated by one of my favorite booktube channels, Merphy Napier. She did a great job on the narration but then again I might be a little biased just because I lover her channel so much.

Now the book, I LOVE IT! This was such a great book. The author did a great job telling a magical story. And any story with Elf's, I am always intrigued. Kayla is and elf that setting off on her own and she loves to talk. The plot line and the world building was done great. I find this to be a great start for anyone that wants to begin in fantasy. This was so much fun to read!

I highly recommend picking up the audiobook!

Technically I liked everything Reil does. He avoids lots of fantasy tropes, develops characters beyond one-dimensional stereotypes and injects new twists on classic creatures of fantasy. The plot is fine.
I'm fully aware this is a book for kids, I'd say maybe grades 5-7 if I had to guess. Yet despite good character growth and the promise of ongoing adventure in the trilogy, I feel like I've had enough after just the first book.
I think this is just a case of personal taste. There aren't any flaws in Reil's writing and I think most people who enjoy fantasy and books written for younger audiences will like this.
I listened to the book and the narrator was up to the task of bringing the characters to life.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I think this world is a little fun, but it has its own logic. Kyla is an elf that is trying to find her way in college and meeting all kind of beings like demons, air spirits and much more. Only her journey to self-discovery is kind of blocked by Erebus that god of darkness. Now she has to go on a quest to save the world and those she loves from eternal darkness. She is a little jump in and figure it out later, but she does her best.  I enjoyed it very much.

Excellent Fantasy Adventure!
Story structure was professional with good progression that had no “quantum leaps” so as to cause confusion in following narrative.
The Narrator has the Perfect voice , which conveyed excellent vocal pressure.
I would recommend this audiobook to ages 15 and older due to some violence, and light sexuality, but having nothing graphic because it simply wasn’t needed as the type of story didn’t need it because of enthralling storyline! This book could well support a sequel, or easily be a stand alone book!

I received a copy of this book through the Goodreads giveaway - requested an ebook copy instead as that is just how I roll - my preferred way of reading (convenience via Smartphone).

I quite enjoyed this story. The idea of starting the story about an average female elf attending college who was clearly caught in amazement in the world of different creatures that surround her was a nice touch. I kind of related to that in a way (minus the different creatures of course). I grew up in a small country town so going to a big city college was quite the change for me.

I won't mention too much about the rest of the story as I don't like to ruin it by unintentionally giving anything huge away. One thing I must say though is that I loved the way the author described how most of the things we experience could be made possible by powerful beings - such as strong beings making the world spin. That is the only one I'll give away. Great ideas!

The one and only problem I had was being able to keep track of all the characters introduced in this story. Being a fantasy story, it is expected to have quite unusual names for most characters. There weren't an overwhelming number of characters but just enough to get me to ebook search back to find out just who the odd character was earlier in the book. Ahh you have to love that ebook feature.

Excellent story. Hopefully I do get a chance to read another one of your novels.

Reviewed by Danika Jayde at The Reader's Hollow

This book kept my attention from beginning to end. Even the initial interaction of the Goblin Grizzlesnout with the protagonist of the tale, an Elf named Kyla, I was entertained. The story changed views quite fluidly and the writing style of the story itself flowed well. The highly diverse fantasy and mythology references was very fascinating adding a great setting to the tale. I could slightly liken it to the idea of the Percy Jackson novels with its demigod camp or even Harry Potter with its specialized classes. But the story is all its own.

The characters themselves were developed very well; the reader can get a true sense of the personalities they have. I think everyone has met an expressive chatterbox like Kyla, an over-bearing leader-type like Eunoe, a quiet yet strong spirit like Aspen, and a slightly arrogant yet good intentioned person like Aura.

Even the hard-shelled Lili that softened enough to find love with the highly intelligent Saul were characters a reader could relate to. I adored the character of Lug as well. The contrast of his literal hard shell with his soft and sweet personality made him utterly loveable. The mystery developed with other characters was done quite well as so that the reader wasn’t quite sure on who Kyla could trust or not trust. I may even need to read this a second time to see things I overlooked the first time now that I know the truth.

I really enjoyed the story; it has an intellectual explanation for almost every natural occurrence in nature, but with a fantastical twist. For example, the world turns because it is the job for beings at the centre of the earth to turn the big wheel that spins the world (who even at one point go on strike so the sun does not set for a few days) or the mythological reference that gravity occurs due to invisible cords attached to everything and the people working in the “gravity well” do a good job of making sure nothing floats away.

But what I enjoyed most is the fortitude of the main character Kyla. That in all her self-doubt she had the belief in herself to try. That even with the voices of other people telling her that her plan wouldn’t work she was going to go for it anyways. From the start of unintentionally making herself the target of the main antagonist Erebus, to the end, she took each step with the intention to go down fighting.

This was a very entertaining read and I will be anxiously waiting for the next piece if there is to be one.

I just found out via the Goodreads author tutorial that I am allowed to review my own book! I also recognize this is not a legitimate review, but would like to use the space to give a little background.

'Elf Mastery' was conceived as an idea for a cartoon series. I had a pitch bible, some songs, etc and even got a couple pitches out to animation companies. However, I ran into two struggles. First, I spoke with someone in the industry who told me that even if I sold it, the network/producer who picked it up would likely change it and the final product would be unrecognizable. (He had this happen to him). Second, getting a TV show made is a lot more difficult than getting a book published (especially now, in the day of self-publication). I had already been through that rigamarole trying to get a documentary series made. So a book gave me better creative control, better path to production, and here I am.

The concept with 'Elf Mastery' began with the setting: the idea that our world was managed in the background by fairies, elves, and the like. That is, what we call science is actually somebody's hard work. However, I didn't want the story to be setting driven. I wanted it to be character-driven. So I invented Kyla Nim. Kyla was intended to break some of the tropes that are common in YA fiction. She isn't an orphan; she isn't the Chosen One; she isn't the smartest, strongest, or most powerful. She is a simple girl with a strong family and incredible sense of dedication that carries her through the challenges in the story.

I feel the characters are the strength of this story, and feedback from my beta readers seems to support this. I'm proud of that because that is what I intended.

One piece of advice I will give before you read this is that the story certainly takes time to build up and introduce the characters before the main plot is introduced. To mitigate this, the first act contains its own sub-plots that help define the characters so (hopefully) the first several chapters aren't simply a dull sequence of introductions.

I received this as a kindle copy in exchange for an honest review. I read this book while on a ten-hour overnight shift. I actually just got to see the cover for the first time while rating it on Goodreads, it never showed up on my kindle. But that’s beside the point, the cover was so cute! Was nothing how I pictured Kyla but she sure is cute! So I just love the cover. The elf was the best character. So full of life and entertaining the entire time, she actually reminded me of a friend who is the biggest chatterer of my entire group. I liked her mindset, her attitude and how she never gave up her beliefs.

The elf, of course, was the best character that I’ve read from a fantasy book lately. So full of life and entertaining the entire time, she actually reminded me of a friend who is the biggest chatterer of my entire group. I liked her mindset, her attitude and how she never gave up her beliefs.

I think the only thing I didn’t like about this books was the build up in the beginning, seemed like it took forever. I just wanted to get on with the story! Once I did, the story had me hooked.

I think this was a great book for young adults and I definitely recommend it to anyone else who is interested in young adult books.

A teenage elf saves the world from the god of darkness in this light-hearted fantasy adventure.

Kyla, a teenage elf, leaves home for the first time to go to college. She has to do the normal teenage things — make friends, pick a course of study. She’s rather annoying and has a distinct lack of aptitude for most things, but gets by on perkiness. Along the way, she gets entangled in a plot to engulf the world in eternal night.

The setting is modern-day Earth, with elves and other mythical creatures living unnoticed alongside humans. Everything humans think happens naturally according to physical laws — gravity, the stars, earthquakes — is actually run by hidden fairies, giants, goblins etc. If you are thinking that sounds horribly twee… it is a bit. But helped along by decent writing and good characters, it manages to stay light and amusing without descending into unbearable cuteness.

Got this book from the author
to review.
The story's about Kyra, a elf's first year away from home fighting many challenges coming in the way!
This was a decent but a very average read for me. The concept was not good and was presented in a even wroser manner! The narration and dialouges were not catchy too!
This book is not something that can catch a reader's attention!
It whould have been better!
What I liked was the conversation between Kyla and Grizzlesnout and the supernatural characters!
