Pilot Down by Kimberley Troutte was a roller coaster of emotions throughout this romance.

Dane Banner is disciplined as the Pilot in Command at Air Station, Sitka, Alaska because he knows all too well that his every action while on duty can effect the lives of not only his team but the people they serve. June Harvey and her two children have returned to Sitka five years after her husband's death. She's trying to start over but struggles every day with survivor's guilt and other secrets from her past. Strong and well developed characters, a plot that moved smoothly, and some hot romance kept me turning the pages on this latest addition to Ms. Troutte's United States Coast Guard Alaska series. I am keeping my fingers crossed that there will be more books in this series.

The author provided me with a copy of this book to review. This did not influence my thoughts and opinions in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

Pilot Down (Alaskan Coast Guardsmen Book 2) by Kimberley Troutte is Dane Banner and June Harvey's story. Guilt from the past, PTSD from war and other issues are part of the reason that these two feel that they can never act on their feelings for each other. Friends yes, but admit no more until…

This is the until story of what happens as June return with her youngest to Sitka. Jake, June’s older son is at college but Mikey her twelve year old sone plays a major part in the day-to-day actions. In fact he is one of my favorite characters in this book with his matchmaking which make him seem older at times. Definitely trying to look out for his mom.

This is a slow burn romance that works realistically for these two characters. Truths come out and danger comes calling but it is the June’s growth as an individual with changes in her perspective that stood out to me. I loved this statement, “Suddenly, she realized what she had been missing when she ran away from her life after Ted died. Women. Their strength. Their softness. The way they listened when she was having a breakdown and jumped up to stand beside her.” Now that is something all women can relate to in a female character. I wanted to shout, “You know it, girl” but knew my husband sitting on the other side of the room would think I had finally gone crazy!

A mall-town romance in a big wilderness, I can recommend Pilot Down. Several references to the main characters in the first book, enough so that you will want to read the first one. Still this time they are minor characters so Pilot Down reads well on its own.

The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Pilot Down by Kimberley Troutte is the second book in her Alaskan Coast Guardsmen series.

I would highly recommend that you read the first book because this story picks up 5 years after the Survivor Lost ends. For this book we have Dane Banner and June Harvey's story when she has returned to Sitka after being in the Yukon. You'll definitely chuckle at the coaching in how to get the girl from Mikey June's youngest son.

June Harvey has returned to Sitka after 5 years away but she still has a fear of water because of how her husband Ted died in his plane. But with one son at college and she's now working at the Highliner Coffee shop in town money's tight for them. Mikey will try her patience and Dane will help make him a Junior Coast guard during the one day Sac Roe. When you add in two feuding brothers who hate the Coasties and June and Dane's feelings for each other it makes this book into a page turner that you can't put down. Plus with Dane's guilt over Ted's death and PTSD he's always wondered what if when all 3 of them met at a bar in Texas could they have been happy instead of Ted and June's unhappy marriage?

This was a great addition to the series and I can't wait to see who gets the next story in the series.

Only forced myself to finish it because I had also read the first book in the series. Will not be reading book 3. I found it depressing and angsty, sadly, the word that comes to mind is pathetic. If I wanted to be subjected to that much self abasement I would read a teen novel. The main character has a son in college. Found it very disappointing.

A Real Love Story

This is the last of the three in the series, and I like this one the best! Kids will be kids and so true in this charming tale...

Dane and Ted were best friends. They had just brought some fallen brothers back to the US from a military mission that had gone horribly wrong in the Middle East, when they stopped off at a bar to have a drink and begin to process the ramifications of their task. Dane was in a really bad space in his head. He saw this beautiful young lady, June, and was drawn to her, but at the time he was emotionally raw and unavailable. So Ted jumped in made her his. They married and had two boys, but because Ted never took the time to process and heal from the trauma of war and death, his demons began to get the better of him. He started drinking and treating his wife poorly. He even had at least one affair. He was given multiple chances to make it work, but fails them all. One night he really blows it, and ends up crashing a seaplane and dies. June takes her boys and runs from Sitka, Alaska, because everyone looks at her with pity in their eyes, and she just can’t take it anymore. Meanwhile, Dane has been in love with June for years, but has never done anything about it. He leaves her alone for 5 years, until she finally decides to come back to Sitka. There is some awkwardness at first, but they soon get past it and develop a strong friendship.

In the midst of the developing feelings between Dane and June, there are a few situations that create escalating tension. To offset the tension, there is a dog that adds some lightheartedness to the story. It’s a slow build to get June and Dane together, but one that is worth the wait. June’s son adds some poignancy and depth to the book with some of the situations he is faced with. Additionally, there are some supporting characters who help these two protagonists figure things out. The author is able to bring this story to life with situations that illuminate the conflicts of each protagonist. While the growth arc of each character is hard fought, it is rewarding in the end. The book has a very appropriate finale! Well done, Ms. Troutte!
