With such coverage and interest, how can there be anything new to say about the band? The The Days of Their Life manages to do so thanks to the remarkable collection of photographs housed in Mirropix, the library of the Daily Mirror, Britain's premier popular daily.
With so much interest in the band, photographers were always looking to cover not just the major events that all the media attended, but smaller, more intimate moments . And then, of course there were the the Beatles were perfect targets for this new breed of photographer who didn't ask for permission to take their photos and followed George, Paul, John, and Ringo wherever they went.
The most famous pop band in the world, even today The Beatles hold center stage . Anyone who lived through the 1960s remembers them and the digital remastering of their output has ensured that younger generations know them too. How could they not? The songs will live forever and are regularly reused in film or TV scores, on advertisements, and on radio channels everywhere.
Mirropix has a sensational collection of material taken to feed an insatiable desire to see the band, its families, hangers on, and what they did . Record launches , publicity events , holidays , flights in and out of the country. TV broadcasts , film work , births , deaths , and marriages : everything was photographed. With this sort of coverage, unsurprisingly much material was not published and it is this treasure trove that is exploited in The The Days of Their Life .
This very excellently done timeline book was like taking a walk down Memory Lane. I was 11 years old & just starting 6th grade in a new school after moving from the house I'd known all my childhood years & leaving all my friends behind. A liking for this new music of these four English guys gave me something in common with the new kids I hoped would become friends. It starts with a bit of history & background, then a timeline is given for each important year followed by corresponding photos--and the photos are fabulous. There are many of the famous ones we've all seen numerous times--but also many behind-the-scenes pictures of rehearsals, homes, family, parties, gigs, special moments. Each song brought back memories--myself & three classmates dressing as Beatles & lip syncing to "I Want to Hold Your Hand" in front of our class, going to see "Help" at the local theater & one of my friends crying because she had such a crush on John--& so many more. It's 320 pages, but it didn't feel that long, was so easy & enjoyable to read that I wished it were longer. And it does fill you with awe when you see all the gigs & concert dates, how quickly records were released, how hard they worked with very little time off to keep up with the demand, how these four clean cut, well-dressed, baby-faced young men (although at the time they weren't thought of as clean cut with their shaggy hair) morphed into more mature, more individual, more involved, more talented & creative, & hairier young men who began branching out with their own projects & music that changed the world. It was great to witness it first-hand & this book brings back that time & all those wonderful memories.
Few pop music artists have been photographed as much as The Beatles. This photo collection follows a year by year account of the activities and events involving the group. It is organized by year with a chronological list and the photos of that year follow along. It's not a comprehensive daily account which I believe can be found in other books but it does give a rough idea of what they were doing at a given time. It makes a good coffee table book about the band.
Surprising me, I actually learned a few things I did not know about The Beatles and saw tons of photos I've not seen before! Nicely organized by year. Each year & the page numbers in that year were color coded, which I found delightful & helpful. If you're a Beatles fan, add this book to your Beatles books.
This is a pretty good coffee table book. It had beautiful picture and descriptions of the Beatles lives that are good for any moderate Beatle fan. I would recommend to people who are just getting in to the Beatles.
The Beatles: The Days Of Their Life by Richard Havers chronicles life for the “Fab Four” during “Beatlemania”. Through candid photos, newspaper clippings, and fascinating text on each page, Havers brings you back to the days of rock n’ roll. From Beatlemania to their final days together, The Beatles: The Days Of Their Life Gives a new perspective on the biggest band in history.
I think that The Beatles: The Days Of Their Life by Richard Havers is a rare look at the Beatles that I had not yet seen. While reading it, I was truly brought back in time and that is why I think this is such an interesting book. Havers captivates the reader with quotes from all four of the Beatles’. I particularly enjoyed reading about what went into producing their albums. From “I want to hold your hand” to “Let it be”, I learned the meaning and inspiration between some of my favorite songs. “Everything has a beginning and so it also must end. The Beatles break up was much like every other break up, it had a start, a middle and an end. There are some that argue it was Brian’s passing, others that it was Yoko’s arrival, while others make the case that it had just run its course.” (Havers 287). This quote is conclusive to the Beatles career together and the end of an era. The Beatles changed the course of music history and paved the path for many of the artists that followed. The Beatles: The Days Of Their Life gives a new look behind the band that changed the world. I would give The Beatles: The Days Of Their Life by Richard Havers four out of five stars because it was very informative and had a lot of great content on the Beatles. Another book that is similar is The Beatles Anthology by the Beatles. Both books share similar personal accounts on the Beatles. The Beatles Anthology is different in the sense that it has less photos and more text. It also focuses more on the Beatles’ themselves and less on the songs and albums. I would recommend The Beatles: The Days Of Their Life to anyone Beatles fans and also people who enjoy reading about music.
