Collects Road to Oz (2012) #1-6, The Emerald City of Oz (2013) #1-5. More enchanting tales from L. Frank Baum's ever-captivating world of Oz! When your name is Dorothy Gale, all roads lead back to Oz. And sure enough, Dorothy soon finds herself on yet another magical journey! This time she's joined by the Shaggy Man, with his handy-dandy love magnet, and Button-Bright, the wisest little boy who "don't know" anything. But will the trio arrive in time for Princess Ozma's birthday gala? Then, when Dorothy, Uncle Henry and Aunt Em are forced to leave their Kansas home, where can they go? To the Emerald City, of course! Dorothy and the Wizard take Em and Henry on a grand tour - but will Oz be able to withstand an attack by the Nomes, the Growleywogs and the evil shape-shifting Phanfasms?
My familiarity with Oz mostly comes from the movie. This comic, which takes place after that, has fun, whimsical art, but not a lot of plot or conflict. It's cute, but repetitive. In The Road To Oz Dorothy travels the road to the Emrald city, meets a bunch of people along the way, goes to a party, then goes home. In The Emrald City of Oz, Dorothy brings her aunt and uncle to Oz since they're going to get kicked off the farm. Then they spend some time wandering around meeting people until they find out Oz is to be invaded by a bunch of bad guys, which provides a lot less excitement or challenge than one might expect.
The art is pretty but the story wasn't all that great. Borrowed from the library so my 9 year old could read it but don't think even she would enjoy this one. The fact it's 'the complete collection' but is actually the last in a series is also a bit confusing.
I'd rather give this book 3 1/2 stars, but that's just not allowed. Wonderful art, but I think I'd have to be more of a fan of the Oz books to enjoy it overall.
Shanower and Young's love of the material shines through in the art and dialogue, even though this is the "plotless travelogue" section of the Oz books.
