Detective Sergeant Guy Poole's mother is missing, presumed kidnapped, but with no ransom demand, for what purpose?
Kept away from the case, Detective Inspector Sam Brock is instead landed with a seemingly impossible murder as a man is found stabbed in a locked room surrounded by witnesses who swear no one entered or exited.
As the duo follow the confusing trail it becomes clear the two cases are related and that by solving the unsolvable they may just uncover the truth about Jenny Poole's whereabouts and put to bed demons that have surrounded the family for years.
MURDER IN A WATCHED ROOM is the fOURTH in a series of page-turning mysteries that will leave you wanting more!

Can't beat a Brock and Poole mystery for a terrific plot and terrific characters, and this entry in the series is no exception. This one definitely ratchets up the tension, with kidnappings close to home. And there might be some changes a'comin,' for someone.
The author also knows how to craft dialog scenes that are true to life, especially when humor is thrown in. A great page-turner for fans of the series and anyone who enjoys Brit police procedurals.
The Brock & Poole Mystery series is reminiscent of the classic English police procedural, pairing a wise but somewhat quirky DCI with a willing and able young Sergeant. The plots are well crafted and the major and supporting characters are developed smoothly over the course of the first four books. Their back stories are novel while remaining believable & Barnett avoids the tendency of lesser authors to allow them to devolve into caricatures. I'm looking forward to the next book.
This was a very engrossing read and I enjoyed how the storyline came together in the end. Many interesting twists and turns in this final book . I couldn't put it down! The author has a way with revealing the characters' feelings and thoughts. It was easy to like each person and root for them. To feel their happy and sad moments. Great book and enjoyed the series.
Fourth in this series, it was excellent. Subplots from the first three books neatly tied up, but not to the point that would prevent more books in the Poole and Brock series. In fact, whole new vistas and plot opportunities are now wide open.
Just to ensure that wasn’t too subtle...Mr. Barnett, when can we expect more volumes (please note, that’s plural) to be published?
Entertaining locked room mystery. I felt there was a leap in logic at the inspector’s reveal that the reader wasn’t privy to after hearing most of his other thoughts. The writing was clear until the end where the inspectors explanation of the sequence of events was confusing. The fact the Inspector disliked modern technology is repeated too frequently and having him avoid it when it often factors into crime seemed unrealistic.
Poole's mother is kidnapped, but he and Brock can't take the case because of the conflict of interest, so it falls to Anderson and Sharp, to their dismay. Meanwhile they are tasked with investigating a locked room murder with a plethora of witnesses who swear no one entered or exited it.
Interesting enough story, but I figured it out long before they did. We get to know more about Poole's parents though the ending was a tad dramatic it was satisfying enough.
This is the fourth entry in the Brock & Poole british procedural series. A few things going in in this read, Detective Sargeant Guy Pooles mothet has gone missing, possibly kidnapped. But they young Sargeant and his govenor Detetive Inspector Sam Brock arent allowed to investigate the matter. They have another case, a locked room mystery to solve. Which ate always fun to solve and peice together the solution. Love these characters and setting.
Little convoluted. But enjoy the characters especially Brock and Poole. People's mother went missing at the end of the last book and Guy is struggling . Then a case arises a few days later at a remote company retreat and it seems to be connected to Jennifer Poole's disappearance. The mystery wasn't as good as the first three as it was based oh the incident from Poole's past. Looking forward to reading the next and final book in this series.
Loved all the books in the Brock and Poole series. It's enjoyable to see the workings of all the characters together as well as each individually. I look forward to more as Brock takes on new ventures in his personal life and work situation. Will Guy and his father ever reconnect?
Happy to have spent a few hours in the cozy company of the cop-crew Mr Barnett has assembled and brought to life for us. The plot of this one was not as solidly constructed as I would have liked, but I certainly bought the next book right after this one and am relishing reading it.
A locked room mystery- the hardest to solve of all mysteries. It’s like a magic trick, are you really seeing the whole picture or is the left hand simply blowing smoke! And how does this all relate to Inspector Poole’s missing mother- or is that just another distraction
Really enjoying these books. Just had to mention that it made me chuckle, wondering how Nora who handcuffed in the buggy, opened the door, stood with her arms folded in the hut, but died in handcuffs when she was shot. Didn't make the story any less enjoyable though. Looking forward to the next one.
This series is very good----- great police procedures, interesting cases, and enjoyable characters. The interaction among the police team and their families, outside working hours, is also engaging . Fast paced and well described!
Good mystery, likeable characters and very good writing. Entertains in a quiet, civil way. Dialogue flows in a pleasing manner and the internal musings of characters don't feel forced or awkward.
Really good read. I read all 4 books due to the "hunker down" the Covid-19 has required. But must say the choice to read these books was a good one- a bit better than Netflx!
This review is for the first 4 books. The characters are interesting, clever and entertaining! They are well developed and evolving. I am looking forward to many more great reads by A. G. Barnett!
I loved the Brock and Poole mysteries!! I hope there will more of them! With some books there's too much descriptive detail, and I flip pages or skip over paragraphs. Not with these mysteries!!
I haven't been able to stop reading these storie since I began. 4 books on 3 days, the commitment is a statement of how much hold these have on me.one more to go....for now!
Barnett's, Murder in a Watched Room, is a great historical British procedural. The plot line that entwined a murder plus the kidnapping of DS Poole's family keeps the reader turning pages. Much enjoyed!
The story had you guessing who could be the murderer to the end there was many characters that confuse the situation. I really enjoy pool and Brock as a team I can’t wait to read the final book.
Nice twist to the murder investigation, decent writing, good character development. Brick and Poole are in fine form, with the rest of the usual team as support. Recommended
