Edited Out: A Carmen Ramirez Mystery

Rate this book
Carmen Ramirez, 24, a fledgling copy editor, gets her first big break — working on a second-anniversary spread about the killing of a 12-year-old girl. The child's body is discovered at the home her teacher, a closeted lesbian who commits suicide shortly after the murder. After challenging the inaccurate, homophobic coverage, Carmen is pulled off the project. Undaunted, Carmen searches for the truth — a decision that risks her job and her life. Meanwhile, a chance meeting at the newspaper library brings Carmen the prospect of new love. Julia, tall, athletic, and funny with zero credentials as a lesbian, turns on the charm as she pursues Carmen. Misunderstandings, vulnerability, and tenderness give way to fiery passions.

In this new edition of Edited Out, prior readers will find new insights into Carmen, Julia, and others. Readers, new and old will relate to Edited Out’s themes of homophobia and racism — prejudices that plague us to this day. This mystery weaves together a story of love, loyalty, and the fight for justice.

Kindle Unlimited Read.

I very much like the premise, and the overall idea, but felt it suffered from some common problems which may or may not be deal breakers to other readers.

For me, I just felt like there was too much "tell" not enough 'show'. We just get given a lot of information, about everything, presented to us all in very matter of fact ways - which worked to a point since it was like we were along for the ride with Carmen as she uncovers information. However a lot of the time it seemed to lack an emotional connection. Especially for a crime so heinous. Carmen just barely reacts a lot of the time. We do get a few flutters of emotion from Carmen from time to time, but never enough for me to believe in.

On the opposite end, she became quite emotional and flummoxed by Julia in the library and her attraction to her went from zero to one hundred in days. They both went from being kinda shy, kinda flirting. To Carmen thinking Julia is just toying with her, to saying I LOVE YOU and hopping in the sack despite promises to take it slow and both being inexperienced. WTF?. It was absolutely ridiculous. Their mentality was incredibly immature and juvenile.

Overall I just found it all mediocre and everything was all too easily discoverable with no real mystery or intensity. Plus again that lack of emotions involved made it odd.

You live in hope that times are changing

I presume the times portrayed in this story were the 1990s, which isn't that long ago, and the author's descriptions sounded horrifyingly authentic. The story and characters kept me engrossed although the initial meeting between Carmen and Julia seemed a little forced. This shouldn't really be a criticism because it probably has more to do with my judgement of the author's writing style. If possible I'd add an extra half a star because I couldn't not read it to the end. Worth a read.

Not my cup of tea.

Not into the tone of the religious aspect. I know everyone has their own experience with people of religion but this book was too much for me. A few errors but nothing too bad. The ending felt too fast.

I highly recommend this book. It’s a fast paced story full of twists and turns, romance, laugh out loud humor, and plenty of suspense. There’s something for everyone in this book.

A fast paced read that kept me guessing to the end. Mystery and romance are neatly interwoven in the pages. I smiled knowingly at awkwardness of new love, ached at the betrayals, and my heart raced when Carmen was in danger. Humor rounds out this novel - I especially relate to Carmen’s self-talk. The characters are strongly drawn – heroines, victims and villains alike. And the underlying thread of racism and homophobia, prevalent in 1985 Tulsa, remain relevant today.

As a reader of the first edition, which I also enjoyed — I can say the new edition is stronger than the first, and well worth a second read.
