Natalie Bach is facing personal turmoil, legal conundrums and challenges. While trying to make a difference, she walks the fine line between being a help and a hinderance.
Seconded to criminal law firm, Savage Solicitors, Nat finds herself out of her depth when she’s handed a complicated and tragic case of assisted suicide. Will she get to the bottom of what really happened?
With a heavy workload to juggle, can Nat untangle her own feelings from another very personal and troubling investigation?
Natalie Bach is loaned out to Savage Solicitors, a criminal law firm. While she enjoys doing this, it's also keeping her out of her normal workplace because she and her boss/boyfriend are at odds with each other.
While she gets involved with several cases, the one standout is the man who has just confessed to killing his daughter in a case of assisted suicide. But then the mother also confesses and says that her husband is trying to protect her.
She also deals with the elderly ... in one case, an older woman has been scammed out of a tidy sum and the work she expected to get, never materialized. Nat has a real problem with the elderly population being targeted and taken advantage of.
While not posting any spoilers, I highly recommend reading book 1 in the series .... CONVICTIONS.. before reading this one.
As legal thrillers go, this is a winner! The author was a divorce and professional indemnity lawyer. I expected a tightly woven plot with skillfully drawn characters and credibility to the legal profession. I was not disappointed.
Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this legal thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
A very entertaining legal drama from the pen of Caroline England, writing as Caro Land. It is the second in a series featuring troubled lawyer Natalie Bach and, although it can be read in isolation, I felt at a disadvantage not having read Convictions as there were so many references to what had happened therein. Nevertheless an enjoyable read and I look forward to more.
This second book in the series follows on from "Convictions" which introduced us to Natalie Bach, and her family, friends and colleagues at Goldman Law. This story is set around six months on from the end of book one. Forty year old Natalie had recently returned to the Manchester area of the UK. Resigning from her job as a solicitor, she had moved to Mallorca several years ago with her long term boyfriend Jose to run a bar. She came back initially to care for her mother Anna who had suffered a stroke but instead of following her to the UK, Jose unexpectedly ended the relationship. She later found out much later that he had suffered a violent psychotic episode and had been hospitalised. Now Natalie is still working for Jack Goldman, her former mentor and surrogate father figure, still living with her mother Anna, now fully recovered from her stroke, and still in a relationship with fellow Goldman solicitor Wesley Hughes. They are keeping the relationship secret from work colleagues and Wes is still dealing with the aftermath of his estranged wife Andrea and her crazed actions. Nat has yet to deal with Jose and the future of the bar "Havana". This story runs very smoothly since all the main characters have already been introduced in book one, meaning that it very quickly gets down to some action. It's not long before a horrific firearms incident close to home finds Nat very much out of her depth as a criminal solicitor when she is left holding the fort at Savage Solicitors for old friend Gavin. With two murder suspects to defend coming in quick succession she is up to her ears in work and having to learn fast, and that's before other people in her life start coming to her for help. As we know from the first story, Nat just can't resist "helping" and true to form this often does more harm than good in this book too. There are lots of life changes coming at Nat in this story and it was good to see her eventually uncover much of the truth. Although this was not always the preferred outcome for everyone, there was a good satisfying ending with all the loose ends tied up. It is very well written but whereas this book is described as "the gripping new legal crime suspense series", I would say it is definitely a more gentle series about legal crime. Just as much, it is a great series about people within that framework of the legal system and the relationships between them all, both professional and personal, with some very blurred lines at times. I am definitely left waiting to see what happens next in this series as it gets even stronger. 4.5*
This is my very first read by this author and I have definitely found a new series to read! This was so enjoyable. I loved the lawyer characters and the way in which Natalie has a troubled love life, reeling from her time with Jose to embarking upon a tentative liaison with fellow lawyer and boss Wes. It makes Natalie vulnerable, real, relatable and extremely engaging. A lawyer who doubts herself, is kind and forgiving and tries so hard to adopt a tough exterior when really she isn’t tough at all. There is a lot of humour in the book with some brilliant characters. From Chantelle the secretary to Robbie the receptionist cum paralegal, and from Gavin Savage, the lawyer whose practice Nat has to temporarily take over, to former QC Larry the Lamb, the characters bring a lot of colour to the tale. What I most liked about the book was that it reads like a collection of short stories, moving between different cases, some more serious than others, but all tied together to create one terrific tale with a happy ending. Natalie is determined to represent her clients and in doing so brings her Mum Anna together with Polish OAP Borys. All in all it is a gentle read with a legal focus but without being dull or harsh or too gritty. I loved it and want to read Convictions next.
Author Caro Land is back with “Confessions”, the follow-up to “Convictions” and the second book in the Natalie Bach series.
It wasn’t but a few months ago that readers met Natalie Bach for the first time. The lady lawyer had returned to her prior position at Goldman Law, where she batted cleanup for the firm’s partners as she picked herself back up after heartbreak. Now, Natalie’s settled into the new version of her old life.
“Confessions” by Caro Land picks up Natalie’s story a few months into her relationship with Wesley Hughes. Things are passionate between the two, but shaky nonetheless. A crazy ex-wife will do that. But Natalie is as no-nonsense in her relationship as she is in defending her clients. She’s the shero we all need. Soft-hearted and empathetic. Intelligent and fierce. Strong and determined. She’s a kick butt lawyer and a loving, yet meddlesome friend.
Multiple, well-developed story lines and brilliant character development give “Confessions” a true-to-life feel. The characters become people you know. You can hear their voices, feel their emotions, and even smell the food they eat. “Confessions” has a scrumptious menu in addition to its story. It’s impossible not to want a bite of Anna’s cabbage or the pork pies Natalie starts to crave. It also has an incredible song playlist, thanks to Natalie. Ed Sheeran, anyone? How about Cutting Crew? You’ll sing along as you read along.
It’s mind blowing how author Caro Land creates so many vivid characters, but never makes it confusing to keep track. Instead, she expertly weaves Natalie’s clients, friends, and family together to tell a story bigger than the story. A theme, if you will, of family and love — and what people will do to protect both. It’s that theme that gives “Confessions” such texture and delivers it to its perfect conclusion.
There are moments to make you giggle. There are moments that bring a tear to your eye. You can read “Confessions” as a standalone — or as the second book in an amazing new series. But one thing is for certain. You won’t regret picking it up.
Thank you to Caro Land for providing a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this story. It is full of suspenseful and twists and turns that left me turning pages fast. This is not my first book by this author but it has just become my favorite. This is a well written story that has characters that bring the story to life. They make you feel as if you are part of the story. I had no problems connecting with them. This is a story about an assisted sucide but is it really? I highly recommend this book and this series.
Confessions by Caro Land. This is book 2 in Caro Land new legal series. Another great read. I love Caroline's books. This new series is just as good. Great story. Some good characters. I do hope there is more to come. 5*.
This is book two in the ‘Natalie Bach Series’ by Caro Land, a gripping legal, suspense drama series. ‘Confessions’ can also be read as a standalone story. Natalie Bach faces personal turmoil, legal conundrums and challenges whilst on secondment to Savage Solicitors, a criminal law firm. Nat, soon finds herself out of her depth when she’s handed a complicated and tragic case of assisted suicide and begins to feel she’s more of a hindrance than a help as she investigates this tragic case. As well as juggling a heavy workload Nat is also working though her personal feelings from a previous troubling case. This is a gripping legal crime suspense novel which had me gripped from the start. The main character, Natalie Bach is a likeable, realistic and very relatable character and I felt immersed in her world as she investigated this upsetting case of assisted suicide. The storyline had plenty of twists and turns which kept me hooked from page one until the end, and I literally could not put this book down. A five star read.
The second book. Natalie Bach in a relationship with her boss, married father of two, Wesley Hughes, his wife is on remand for poisoning their son and perverting the course of justice. Their relationship has to be kept a secret from their lawyer colleagues at Goldman Law in Manchester. Both known to them are two cases Brian Selby arrested for murder of his daughter, and a terrible shooting at Salford petrol station a seven year old child Ruthie Savage. Oh what a cracker of a read. I loved it right through. I enjoyed Convictions, and Confessions was so easy to pick up. This book grips and p pulls you into it from the start. A dynamic twist . I cannot say nothing more but do recommend to reader's on what your missing. Do read both its well worth it.
Here is my review of Confessions by Caro Land. It’s her second book featuring female lawyer Natalie Bach and she was based in Didsbury, working for Goldman Law. She managed to get a job back there when she returned from Spain after spending five years in Mallorca running a bar with her then boyfriend Jose. She had to come back to look after her mum who had become ill, thankfully her mum has now recovered. She was now seeing Wesley Hughes, a partner at Goldman Law.
Natalie gets to meet Wesley’s parents and brother Sydney with his children for the first time. She has been given a company car and as her workload has increased, she has been allowed to choose what type of filing cabinet she would like.
One afternoon, Natalie heard the most gut wrenching news possible from Chantelle, Gavin’s secretary, his young child Ruthie has been hurt in a shooting accident. When the call finished, she immediately ran down to Wes with the news but he has his own bad news to impart. Brian Selby has been arrested for the murder of his eldest daugther. Later that evening, Gavin rang and gave her an update. Also, to request her help at Savage Solicitors whilst he was at the hospital with Ruthie, could she stand in for him? Then she thought about getting Jack to stand in for her. Simples!
Natalie went to work with Chantelle as secretary, Robbie as the paralegal but still at college and QC Larry Lamb plus at magistrates court. All pulling together to make things work in Gavin’s absence as Natalie knew nothing about criminal law. They had the Brian Selby assisted suicide case to look into which Robbie and Chantelle had made a start with. Natalie and Wes have a major fallout with their relationship due to Andrea, Wes’ current wife, who is causing him a few problems and tried poisoning Matty the year before. Will they make up and get back together again? Andrea gives Wes an ultimatum. His mum goes in his car and waits outside until the stated time then Andrea takes her life in her hands…... Will Natalie be able to handle being at Savage Solicitors and dealing with the cases that come through? Will Gavin have a business to come back to? Will Ruthie be ok? A lot happens in this book and we meet a few new characters. I really enjoyed reading this Natalie Bach book which I read in a day as I found it unputdownable. Hopefully there will be another book in this series…...
Confessions is the second in a series by Caro Land, also known as Caroline England. The first in the series was Convictions and I loved it. Caroline is best known for her dark, domestic thrillers. This series has a lighter feel to it and I found it a great read. It’s a refreshing change to have a crime drama series about the legal aspect rather than from the side of the police. I think it would be excellent as a TV series. There are some good strong characters, and there is a good mix of humour and serious issues. It’s set in Manchester where Natalie Bach is living after returning from running a bar in Mallorca with her ex-boyfriend. Before the break from her legal career she worked at Goldman Law. Now she’s back there and also helping out solicitor Gavin Savage, an old university friend, who has his own business. Their relationship is hilarious, as Gavin is very blunt in his conversation. While Gavin takes some time off with an unimaginable family crisis, Natalie moves into his tatty office and takes on his cases. There are some great scenes in the office, with the larger than life receptionist and the young shy paralegal, plus lots of coffee and cake. Natalie is still sharing a house with her Mum, Anna. Anna makes me laugh with the things she says, and she has a new friend in this story. Natalie’s love life doesn’t run smoothly, and her relationship with Wesley isn’t totally plain sailing. His estranged wife Andrea is a bit of a psycho after accusing him of throwing her down the stairs in the past. Not to mention the incident with one of their twin sons in book one. Plenty of drama from Goldman Law involving Max, the senior bench boy who was having girlfriend trouble. And nice to catch up with Jack and Catherine Goldman. Some Chinese walls as Goldman Law and Savage Solicitors were defending opposite sides of the same big and complex case. A real page-turner and I highly recommend it. I hope there will be further books in the series because there are some excellent characters. https://steflozbookblog.wordpress.com...
Having read, and loved, Convictions by Caro Land I was SO glad I had a copy of Confessions to start straight away! I have been totally gripped once again! This is an excellent second book in the Natalie Bach series and although I have to read a series in order, and highly recommend that you read Convictions, this book would read easily as a standalone. This book is quite an emotional rollercoaster for Natalie, and other characters featured throughout. Gavin Savage is one of my favourite characters and my heart just broke for him when his family suffers a devastating tragedy. Natalie is naturally affected too as Gavin is one of her closest friends and colleagues. She helps by working at Savage Solicitors whilst Gavin quite rightly prioritises his family. During this time, she finds herself dealing with a complicated and heart-wrenching case of assisted suicide (I can’t even begin to imagine). Natalie also has her own personal relationship with Wes to deal with (I did want to bang their heads together at one point!) as well as tying up some loose ends from her past. There is such a lot going on in this book, but it flows perfectly, and everyone plays a vital part in adding depth to the story. I found myself easily swept up in their lives. Natalie is an easily likeable character. I can imagine being friends with her. She is beautifully flawed which makes her so real and believable. She has a quick temper at times, and over analyses pretty much everything but she has a heart of gold. She’s always trying to do her best for everyone, professionally and personally, to her own detriment at times. She deeply craves true love and a family of her own and I truly wished this for her. This book made me cry, at times, and hold my breath in anticipation but it also made me smile, a lot. Once again, a captivating story of love, loss, friendship and family with a fascinating insight into the daily lives of solicitors. I LOVED it!
This is the second in the Natalie Bach series, which started in Convictions. In the first book we are introduced to Natalie, her family, a bit of her back story, and work and personal life. This books sees Natalie in a slightly more stable situation - she is working for her old firm, is in a relationship with an old boyfriend and seems to be putting the past behind her. Sounds sorted? She's not. Her boyfriend is still married to the woman who tried to poison her own child. Her work life is complicated because her boyfriend works there, and so does the woman he had a fling with, as well as her husband who owns the company. Natalie knows all the secrets, and tries to keep them all. She is balancing several legal cases at once and takes on even more when she steps in to cover at the firm of a good friend whose daughter has been caught up in a horrific shooting. Add to this family of her ex-boyfriend turning up needing help, relationship issues, a mother whom she is living with and looking after and a ticking biological clock, and Natalie is kept busy. She is a lovely person, but doesn't seem able to say no to anyone, and this does get taken advantage of. She can be impulsive, setting out with good intentions, but sometimes having them backfire, or burden her with more of other peoples problems. She is very relatable. I absolutely enjoyed reading this book, it is easy to read, and I found myself becoming very involved with the characters and their day to day lives. Waiting for number three now!!
It's fair to say I absolutely love the first book in this series, so I was excited to begin the second .. and it is fan-flaming-tastic!
This time round Natalie finds herself practising criminal law as she helps out her friend by taking over the reins at Savage Solicitors. A far cry from her normal day-to-day routine, all she can do is her best - but is that enough? What with keeping an eye on things at home as well as trying to stay in the loop at her usual job, Nat has her plate full and now she finds herself involved in trying to protect a client accused of, at best, assisted suicide. Can she stay on top of it all?
Bursting with information I have soaked up like a sponge, I found myself not only getting to know Nat Bach better but also understanding a few more things about the legal process. The author writes a very seductive novel; once I began I could hardly bear to put it down! Mixing the personal and the professional there is plenty to absorb and I particularly liked that details from the first book were only touched on lightly where pertinent. With the introduction of a couple of new characters, there are plenty of lighter moments and I found myself giggling one moment and holding back tears the next. This is a gripping read which kept me glued to the pages; I didn't have any idea where it was all heading! With everything sorted out by the final page, I now want to move onto the third book right away - I do hope Caroline is working on it! With problem solving and entertainment a-plenty, this is one book I'm very happy to recommend, and it easily earns all five stars.
Having loved the previous novel of caro land entitled Convictions I was so excited to read this one as an avid Caroline England fan I am loving this series of books. confessions gripped me from the very beginning and I couldn’t put it down and enjoyed reading more about Natalie Bach and her legal career I was intrigued by the legal theme as I used to work for a firm of solicitors and this book combines both the legal side of things along with many other Emotional themes that are relatable running alongside. It was full of twists and turns and kept you guessing throughout. It was a gripping nitty thriller that also combined the story of peoples lives, loves and relationships. I practically devoured this in one sitting and am eagerly awaiting a third book in this series.
Book Two of the ‘Natalie Bach’ series, which Caroline England, and established author of domestic noir thrillers, writes under the name of Caro Land. This series is a departure from Caroline’s usual drama, set in a world that she would know inside out as a former divorce and professional indemnity lawyer. It’s a window into a world of litigation and criminal law, for the uninitiated but intrigued such as myself. As with the first book, the chapters are very busy with plenty going on with more than one story to get your teeth into. Natalie is seconded to Gavin Savage’s practice, whilst he takes leave sitting at his daughter’s bedside after she has been shot. The style and the pace of ‘Confessions’ kept me fully engaged, and alas I read it all too quickly. Looking forward to the next in the series, but I would also like some more psychological thrills from the pen of Caroline England.
This is the second book in the series but could be read as a stand alone.
Nat Bach, our favourite feisty lawyer, is back. I loved the first book , Convictions, and was so happy to get the chance to catch up with the characters and their lives in Confessions.
As usual Nat is juggling many plates and cases as well as her complicated private life. Just as everything seems to be falling into place there’s some big shocks in store for Nat ( and the reader ). So much so I was an emotional wreck for some parts. It was so lovely to get to see more of some of the characters especially Nat’s mum Anna.
There’s murder, assisted suicide, suicide, assault, pregnancy and so much more to keep you hooked. There’s also the usual laughs along the way. I’m hoping there’s more to this series as I’ve really grown to love the characters.
I really do enjoy this series. The ongoing plot between the characters is unfolding nicely. Caro also brings in some good storylines for each book which tie in very nicely with the character development. A female lead character from a hardworking immigrant background and a mix of other characters with different cultural backgrounds sounds like Caro is jumping on the latest bandwagon but, the truth is, she's just embracing the diversity in our everyday life. It's refreshing and adds another layer to these books. Recommended.
Natalie is starting to get settled back home, and pursuing a relationship. Then she is loaned out to Savage Solicitors and life goes back to complications and crime solving. I really enjoyed this sequel and would highly recommend it.
Great followup book for book one. I would highly recommend reading book one first. Both books tie together so smoothly. I have to say I do like this book better then book one. I was hooked from the beginning. There were so many emotions in this book. At times I wanted to cry, I couldn't breathe, I was shocked, and was excited all in one book. This book was well written and a overall fun read.
This is book two in the Natalie Bach solicitor series, it could be read as a standalone but I would wholly recommend reading book number one for the back story.
This is another cleverly written, engaging story with well drawn characters and a great plot. I can't wait for book number three.
2nd book of the series (first one being Convictions), and I have to say that I enjoyed it more than the 1st one. One of my issues when reading series is not remembering the backstories of characters (or mixing them up, I blame it on the amount of thrillers I read), so I was surprised that I could vividly remember this time! Always a good sign... Anyway, Natalie Bach is back, still in the middle of different investigations, and still determined to help everyone, even if that means sacrificing her own happiness.
This is the second book in the Natalie Bach series and a great follow up to the first. The continuation of a few story lines from the first book along with some new cases helped to further develop the characters and bring in some freshness to the story. As with the other book there were twists and turns that made me want to keep turning the page and had my heart skipping a beat. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book thanks to The Book Club Reviewer Group on Facebook, the author, and the publisher.
I received a copy of this book from The Book Club Reviewers- Thank you This is the second book featuring Natalie Bach (honestly treat yourself and read the books in order- it really makes much more sense) it can be read as a standalone. Another well written, slightly gritty law drama that grips the reader from the first page and keeps us hooked until the last line. A brilliant read-thank you
Thanks to TBC and the author for giving me the opportunity to read this amazing book. The second in this series and another excellent read. I loved the characters, getting to know more about the way they ticked and the storyline flowed along at a steady pace. Fingers crossed there will be a third book to follow. This series is a must read.
Confessions is the second of the Natalie Bach books, and although I enjoyed the first, this was even better. Natalie is seconded to Savage Solicitors for a time, and it made her get stuck into the nitty gritty of cases. A great sequel to the first book.
Confessions is the second book in the Natalie Bach legal suspense series. It can be read as a standalone, as the past is mentioned, but I’d recommend reading Convictions first so that you get the full background to Natalie’s story.
In the first book, Natalie returned home to Manchester after five years of running a bar in Mallorca with her boyfriend, Jose, when her mum, Anna, suffered a bad stroke. He broke up with Natalie soon after so she went back to her old job at Goldman Law.
Set shortly after Convictions, Natalie finds herself flung headlong into more complicated cases when a personal tragedy means Gavin Savage has to take time out to be with his family and she acts as a locum lawyer for his criminal law firm, Savage Solicitors. Feeling a bit out of her depth, Natalie tackles the cases with the help of his staff and tries her hardest to make the best decisions, often with unforeseen consequences.
Her new relationship with Wesley Hughes, partner of the firm she works for, is still rather complicated and rocky and his ex-wife, Andrea, and mother of his 18-year-old twin sons, continues to try and interfere in his life, causing him and Natalie much upset and arguments. Natalie is a bit hot headed at times and, where Wesley is concerned, doesn’t always think things through before acting.
There are some more colourful characters in this story: in Gavin’s firm, we get to know bubbly secretary, Chantelle, and meet paralegal, Robbie, who has a sad past, as well as Lawrence Lamb QC, who is rather a character and admits to being a functioning alcoholic.
One of Goldman Law’s most wealthy clients, Brian Selby, returns and, this time, him and his family need Natalie’s help in a rather more serious matter and she ends up representing him.
Natalie’s mum, Anna, becomes frightened of leaving the house after her friend, Barbara, has a bad fall and ends up in hospital with a fractured ankle. She makes a new male friend though and starts socialising a lot more.
Natalie is a great protagonist but she often gives out advice that seems to end up making life more difficult for people. We see a more vulnerable and emotional side to her in this story and she has a lot to deal with as things seem to go from bad to worse and her cases get more complicated and fraught. She does well to focus as carefully as she does with all that’s going on around her!
Overall, I really enjoyed this full-bodied story – lots of plotlines and cases to get your teeth into and I was never quite sure how things were going to pan out. There are a few shocks and surprises along the way, and the odd dubious professional practice as well! It was an engaging and intelligent read with great attention to detail. As well as being very entertaining, the story was also amusing, as well as sad, at times.
This is another well-plotted and cleverly layered novel starring Natalie Bach. I read the two books back to back and really enjoyed continuing the story about the feisty lawyer as she tackled tough cases head on! She may not always make the right decisions but she doesn’t hold back from investigating and trying to help her clients. The series is building nicely now and I hope there will be another book soon!
This is the second book in a series, and I didn't realise this before starting. While this book reads well as a standalone, I think I would definitely have preferred to have read the first book before reading this one. There was a lot going on in this book and it took me a while to figure out who was who and what was going on, but I did get there in the end. I liked the main character, but would like to know her better. If there is a third book coming in this series, I would jump back and read the first book before carrying on.
Natalie Bach is a solicitor. She has returned to work for the same company she left five years before when she moved to Mallorca. Various things in her personal like caused the return, but the main one was her mother's illness; she has now recovered, but is reluctant to leave the house. Natalie reconnected with an old flame who works at the same firm. A series of events cause a chain reaction culminating in secrets from the past coming out for many people. This took me a while to get into, but was a fairly easy read.
