“I could smell it still: the amalgamation of soil, mold, and old rotten flesh.

One of those eyes used to be mine…”

A Lonely Broadcast is an ongoing horror series from the author Kel Byron (screen name The Wendingus). It’s excellent - scary and darkly funny in equal measure. We follow three characters who get assigned to work in a radio station at the end of a tiny, isolated Appalachian town. Things get really weird, really fast. The nature of the threat is deeply Lovecraftian. Bryon richly develops Evelyn, Daniel, and Finn over the course of the story. I grew to love them, making it that much more suspenseful when their lives are placed in danger. At the time of this writing, there are three “seasons” of the series,
all posted on Reddit :
“Accounts from a Lonely Broadcast Station” - 9 parts
“We're Always on the Air at 104.6F.M.” - 5 parts
“Accounts from a Lonely Broadcast Station: Dead Air” (2023) - 9 parts

Byron has also written short stories that fit into a larger shared Universe, sometimes called the Pinehaven series after the town that it takes place in. “I Hate Collecting Bodies from the Woods” (stand alone, between seasons 1 and 2), “We Found Something Under the Christmas Tree Farm” (stand alone: takes place after 'Dead Air' chapter 2), and “Happy New Year from 104.6 FM” (takes place after “Dead Air”).

"They all die on that mountain. Every. Single. One."

The audiobooks of the three seasons are available on Youtube. Performed by Autumn Ivy and Mr. Creepy Pasta, they are fantastic and listening to them is the best way to experience this story. Here is a link to seasons 1 and 2, and here is a link to season 3.

"Last night, I had a dream that the forest split in two."

Byron reports that she is in the process of publishing her first novelized version of the series, to be called A Lonely Broadcast: Book 1 in June 2023. I’m excited to read it. It will be very interesting to see how she adapts and expands this series into this different medium.

“ If you want to see something that defies everything you think you know about this big wild world of ours, you should take a walk deep in the woods sometime.”

The audio version gave a lot of depth to the story due to the narration and additional sounds. Interesting story even though it's not my cup of tea.

Yet another CreepCast listen. Really good story, the characterisation and world building is complex and interesting with a sense of mystery.
