The Eves
The Eves is a multi-generational novel portraying lives lived well and lives in transition. Filled with poignancy and humor, The Eves captures the conversations we wish we had had with our parents, if we had taken the opportunity, and the lessons we would want to impart to our children, if they were ready to listen.
Told through the voice of the psychologically complex Jessica Barnet, this is her story. As the primary witness in a messy trial she has been torn from the foundation of her existence—her connection to her children. With a partially finished doctoral degree, and incomplete renovations on her Washington, DC row house, she has let go of her ambitions and her appearance, but not her vodka or her sense of loss and guilt.
When Jessica meets five diverse, determined, and sometimes ditzy old women living in a sustainable community everything and everybody changes. The Eves, a debut novel, paints a vivid landscape of a community, seen through the eyes of doctoral student Jessica Barnet, an older woman who has given up on resolving her lost life. A close friend pushes her to study and document the life work of a group living and working together on a farm nestled in the cliffs of the Chesapeake. Their storytelling unknowingly helps Jessica to resolve her own complicated losses and begin to reset her future.
Jessica has attempted to flee from from her complicated life through travel to three continents. The author knows these areas well and invites to meet and to know her characters as they reflect on their own individual life's journeys. Sammon's writing uses a panoramic view of the human condition and focuses in so that the reader has a personal view of the storytellers.
The Eves could easily become a series, and I hope it does. I want to know what happens next!

The Eves is a unique and original study on parent/child relationships, women’s relationships, and the narratives we tell ourselves-- and each other.
At the start of the novel Jessica Barnet, the main character, is holed up in her DC townhouse, drinking too much vodka, after the loss of children. But all is not as it initially seems. This story had a lot to tug at the heart strings around parent-child relationships, as our children outgrow the constant need for us. Plus lots of twists and turns as we discover the truth of Jessica’s relationship with her children, with several revelations as the story progresses.
Steeped in local Washington DC and Chesapeake area history, The Eves has a broad and fascinating cast of characters. I appreciated that the author sought to change some of the characteristics and stereotypes of the older characters.
This novel makes a good book club read with lots of fodder for conversation around history, race, women’s relationships and support of each other, and the stories we tell ourselves. Plus unexpected twists right until the finishing chapters.

Jessica's story is as real as your own. Every scene puts her deeper into your heart. As she experiences anguish, trust, and love, so do you. If you're looking for a story that offers glimpses inside of a strong woman character, becoming her best self, you will love Jessica's journey. This book is a smashing debut!

Absolutely amazing story! It was so emotional and passionate. Both the writing and the characters were great. The Eves is a novel about women and men and the stories they have to tell. In particular, this is the story of Jessica Barnet and her journey as she discovers herself and the people who come into her life. Stepping into the pages, I am taken on this journey with Jessica. It's also one that I deeply felt personally.
This book took my heart and twisted it all sorts of ways. It's powerful and has characters that placed an imprint on my heart. Everyone has a story and history. A past. This book reminds us to open our hearts to hear the stories of those who have theirs to share. It's how being willing to listen can change a person and enrich their lives through someone else. I felt this story deep in my soul. As I "lived" this story through Jessica's point of view, I was continually taken back to my own parents and in being so grateful for having their stories with me through the histories they had written of their lives. This passage is especially important in making sure the storytelling continues for generations:
"I know that the younger generation is not interested in taking the time to listen, let alone be ready to care about the stories that go before them. I reassure myself that someday they, like me, will care. I can no longer trust that there is time for the conversations. Now is the time to talk, to listen, and to write so our stories will be waiting for them when they are ready." Such a profound and important message to pass on to our children.
Ms. Sammon meticulously wrote emotions and life into her characters. Through them I experienced a novel that I will remember and think about as I travel this great journey through my life. It is filled with rawness and honesty. This was an extremely emotional read. I cried heart wrenching sobs. I felt the anxieties, joys, and accomplishments. I definitly "experienced" this book.
I am very grateful to Ms. Sammon for the opportunity to read her wondeful book. I truly was touched by the message, the journey, the poignant stories of the characters, and it hit me with all the "feels". I want to thank Ms. Sammon for sharing her amazing talent in writing this novel. I can't wait to read more by her. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my heartfelt own.

This amazing story of a woman caught at a crossroads of her life resonated with me so much! As I approach middle age, I’m always shocked at how young I still feel at heart and this book is such a great affirmation that I’m still at the beginning of so much of my story!
Jessica is still reeling from the loss of her two children. She is stymied in life and in her career, until she is introduced to a village of women with wit and wisdom who teach her that her story, and theirs, is not yet done.

I loved the storytelling and lessons taken from this novel. All too often we forget to listen to the stories of the elderly, to take the time to hear them! The lessons they share, and the experiences they share are so profound if we simply take the time!
The Grange is a place I would love to visit. The history behind this and the simplicity of an earlier life are evident and needed in today’s world. Sitting down and enjoying the company of the women here would be delightful.

This novel will pull at your heartstrings in so many different ways.
Jessica is a mother that has her children pulled from her in a messy trial with her ex. She is struggling to get her townhome fixed up. She meets 5 elderly women at a sustainable community they live at. She finds she needs to hear their stories and learn from them.
The 5 women are such a joy to be around! They have led such different lives but they all have led good ones and Jessica learns a lot from them. She learns to get in touch with her kids again. I fell in love with all these characters.
The ending gave me a punch to the gut that I didn't expect so make sure to have tissues handy at the end!

This book hits you in the heart in the very first chapter and does not stop there. Jessica has lost purpose in her life. Her friend tries to push her outside of her comfort zone by pushing her into an undefined project. This novel is rich in stories and in history. I enjoyed "meeting" the Eves along with Jessica. And I'm grateful to have been witness to Jessica's journey.

A brilliant novel. Jessica, the protagonist, and the crew of fabulous older women are alive on the page. I loved how Ms.Sammon brought multi-generations together to create their sustainable community and the wisdom each imparted. Her male characters will also grab you and you’ll want to hug each one. You’ll laugh and cry, your heart will hurt as it also fills with love and joy. I highly recommend this beautifully written, riveting story. Its message is one you’ll savor long after you read The End.

Absolutely LOVED this book. Great story, fabulous writing style - BRILLIANT! I so connected with the characters and could so easily visualize the scenery and all of the events. Upon completion, I definitely wanted to see a movie based on this book. I'm an avid reader but this book far exceeded many I have read recently -- a MUST read! Can't wait to read more from this author!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Eves”. The more I read, the more I wanted to read about the lives of the men and women that were part of Jessica's journey. I loved the setting of The Grange, and the wonderful idea of a communal living facility. The idea of reaching out to encourage all generations to be involved helps bridge that ever present generation gap. I know that we all can learn a lot from each other, sharing stories is so important. I would have loved to learn stories from my grandparents. The book holds more surprises than you might expect - I found the ending satisfying and a bit of a surprise. Grace Sammon did an excellent job bringing these characters together and telling their stories. I highly recommend this book.

The Eves by Grace Sammon was an amazing story of understanding one’s self in our incredibly challenging and changing world. It was also full of exceptional stories of other’s lives and life itself, a double entendre, if you will. Jessica, the protagonist, a spritely middle-aged woman, opens her heart allowing indelible growth and inspiration into her soul. There’s also countless other fine characters, all of whom you will love, especially Erica. Erica’s talents, determination, and love of life made me think of my own daughter. Grace writes in her author notes, “I hope I have captured fairly, and with great respect, the stories of those who will think they recognize themselves here.” Well done Grace, as to me you accomplished your goal! I was able to wholeheartedly connect to everything your book offered. Not only did Jessica’s journey bring countless memories forward, it also filled me with endless emotions, basically creating a book hangover that’ll stay with me for a long time. The Eves by Grace Sammon is an outstanding book I highly recommend.

It makes you stop and reflect on how to respond to people when they are not at their best-we never really know what people are going through in their lives. What was so compelling for me reading The Eves was Grace Sammon’s wonderful emphasis on the importance of sharing stories. She not only shared Jessica’s very complicated journey but revealed through conversation the history of the other main characters. How many of us would love to have heard past stories of older family members and documented them for future generations? The concept of women living together at The Eves was intriguing and the author brought these characters together in great harmony despite their very different personalities. Grace Sammon has arrived as very talented fiction writer.

There are some books you get lost in and others where you can find yourself. In The Eves, author Grace Sammon shows through her protagonist, Jessica Barnet, that we are all strangers until we make a connection. The book takes readers through the cycles of life and how we can experience the lives of those around us through the processes of storytelling and a very simple action that often takes great courage-letting others into our heart.

Reading The Eves has reminded me: I am a fortunate man. I have many friends who are women. Some are nearby; some are far away; some are no longer here. Now, thanks to The Eves, I have more! They live in my mind's eye and my heart's memory. They show me how to live intentionally, purposefully; mostly in harmony, certainly lovingly. The space they occupy is given life by their presence and, in turn, it nurtures them. Each of their stories is hand-woven into one lovely story.

How old is too old ?
‘It is just food for thought. Do not write the stories about the beginning of our lives because you have judged that we are already at the end of them. Jessica, once upon a time we were girls, and we still believe we are. We are still very much alive.’
Wow. I must say that Im taken aback by the unexpected turn of event. Im just starting to like her though. The thing with getting older (no matter how old are you) , theres a lot to take in, more responsibilities, everything is thrown to you or taken away from you at once , juggling between work and life worth living. Everything changed. There’s so many unanswered wuestions , heart to be taken care of , making lies upon lies for the sake of others.
For what it worth, let go of things we cant change and try to see things in a new perspective. Be a better person, asking God and people for forgiveness. Attaining peace and contentment should really be the goal throughout our life.
Till death do us part. Aint that truth?
Whatda ya hafta do
The oldies. Oh my , each one of them have their own strong personality that I cant help but love them. Warts and all. Each have interesting stories to tell. Tale of their childhood, of their parents and children. Everything is as precious as yours. When someone dies, their stories died too unless theres someone else talk about it. Thats how oral history started, the folklore descended from generations. Giving advices and sharing their experiences so the younger generations take heeds of it. Not repeating the mistakes they now regretted. Making us who we are right now.
I like that she left things unfinished to show that life is always going to be that way unless we change that. Ryn and Adam have the chance to reconcile and try to understand their mother pov (if Jessica tell them the truth) but they blew it away because of hurts and resentment they felt of her. Idk who is to blame as everyone shares the fair amount of guilt, mistakes and assumptions. If only she told them the truth. Shes so kind towards James who do nothing but being a jerk to her. And now she paid the price, living her life longing for her children who didnt know the truth. And them paid the price of abandoning their innocent mother for her ‘betrayals’ not knowing that she only do what she thinks best of her children.
This book is kinda slow to me. And there’s too much characters to keep the tab on. Jessica, oh jessica. Im sorry but I dislike you since the beginning. After a while youre okay after hearing your part of the story. But still, you should tel them the truth rather than berguling sorang-sorang sedih as to why your children left you and mulling over things that can be better only if tou did the right thing. But you didnt.

Emotional and very well-written, this novel truly struck a chord with me. It's a story about relationships between mothers and adult children, the really complicated relationships, when they are good and when they are not. It's about maturity, no matter the age, and the easy ability humans have to misunderstand each other and even themselves. And it's about perceptions, real and imagined. You will understand as you read that the stories we hold within us are important to tell. Now, while we are thinking about it when the thoughts of them are fresh. When the memories are true. I loved the historical aspect. Specifically about an innovative farm in Maryland started with an allotment of forty acres of land and a mule way back in 1868. The characters are richly drawn and tell their stories with humor and poignancy. I truly liked them and would love to sit in the kitchen and play Breakfast Banter some morning. This novel is so insightful, and I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to read it. Thank you to Grace Sammon for my copy. I am so happy to hear that she is working on a new novel, and I can't wait to read it. Because she writes with beauty and insight, and her stories are meant to be shared.

An amazing writer, Grace Sammon captures the hearts of her readership. She creates characters that are truly believable, with all their quirks and idiosyncrasies. I felt I knew them. They tell their stories, and when I was finished reading, I wanted more. It is not “done” I said to myself. As we follow Jessica’s journey, we find so much in the book as the author deals with the issues of aging, death, family relationships, sexuality, race, and honesty. My take-away is how I wish I had taken time to ask my elders to tell me their stories, and how I hope our children will listen as I try to make time to tell my stories to them. This is not a “woman’s” book; it is remarkable piece of timeless writing for everyone.

I loved 'The Eves' by Grace Sammon. I loved it as was about love and wonderful friendships. I loved that it contained culture, some fascinating history that really made me think and wonder. I loved that the characters grew and developed throughout the story particularly that of Jessica. Her growth and times of self reflection made me stop and do the same. The same goes for her discussions with the women of 'The Eves'. Their varying personalities and stories made me laugh, smile and cry. I found it impossible to not get totally immersed in the book, but equally I really didn't want it to end. I can't wait for the follow up and movie!

Jessica's life was a complex as a crossword puzzle in the Sunday Times. Just when you thought you had it figured out, the author introduces a new layer to her life. Through the masterful use of storytelling through detailed character development and scenic descriptions, Sammon gifts us a story full of humor and emotion. I loved the women of the community that welcomed Jessica and helped her find her way. The author did a great job of showcasing how powerful the coming together of women can be in helping each other find direction.
I think the story moved well, the characters were relatable, it was true its genre, and was an all-around solid read. It doesn't hurt the author has such a great disposition that you want to read her work and cheer her on to success. I would recommend this book to anyone.

The Eves is indie pub fiction with some pretty deep themes embedded throughout. We must remember how important relationships are, and sometimes the most powerful reminders are through our history and through stories--simply sharing them, and being sure to share the whole story, not just bits and pieces.
Jessica Barnet is going through her own family and personal struggles. When she encounters an experience working with The Grange to do some research and some story-telling, she feels an instant connection and begins to feel she may have a place--may have found her niche. Through her search for stories from the residents of the Grange, she learns a lot, and she realizes a lot about herself as well. Sometimes we need to listen, and sometimes we need to take a step back and learn from others, which in turn helps us all the more.

What an amazing first novel. The people you meet in The Eves are complex, and real, and will be with you for a long time. I wish I could actually meet them, from young to old.. The author leads us on a journey of adventure, laughter, and sadness, plus some surprises, mirroring life itself. The story is original and fresh, as is the writing,. The reader may find parts of themselves and their families within the characters.. I found the Eves captivating, and the telling of it magical. Grace Sammon is a gifted writer, and I can't wait for more of her work.

January 18, 2021Reading Grace Sammon's, The Eves, is like snuggling up with a cup of hot cocoa or a glass of your finest cabernet, your most comfy blanket, and a fire roaring nearby. It is the ultimate in comfort reading. During these times, I needed a feel good book more than ever. The comradery among these women is something I aspire to have with my girlfriends. There are twists and surprises littered throughout the book that kept me engaged all the way through to the very last page. Very nicely done Grace Sammon!

This book is a well written, engrossing story about a woman named Jessica who is going through a very difficult time in her life. Then she discovers a community of women who live together, grow their own food, and serve their own community and others. She finds a place for herself there and is able to learn more about herself and heal from her many losses. This book is a powerful character driven story and you will definitely be invested in their stories. I’d love to spend more time with The Eves.

Author Grace Sammon reminds us vividly through this, her debut novel, that everyone has a story. Most importantly, each story deserves to be heard. The protagonist, Jessica Barnet, is a mature doctoral student, estranged from her grown children who have sided with their father in an unpleasant domestic conflict. The choices she is making in her personal life are not necessarily the best, until by chance a cast of richly-portrayed characters come into her sphere. The lessons they share through their personalities and life stories are life-altering for Jessica ... and, I suspect, for many readers as well.
I feel the true gifts of this story are the opportunities we are given to meet such a diverse cast of characters, be immersed in their stories and learn from them. Kudos to Ms. Sammon for a brilliant debut! I eagerly await her next novel and highly recommend The Eves.

This is a story centered on the lives of women, young and old. It is a story about male and female relationships centered on these women. The books covers sensitive issues as well; race, sexual identity, alcoholism and family divisions and yet it is uplifting as these issues are brought into the open and discussed. I was captivated from the very first page. Thank you, Grace Sammon, for this book. I hear that there is a sequel.

What a terrific story. A must read for women who have gone thru life’s challenges, highs and lows. I don’t often come across a novel that As a mature woman I can relate to as I related to the stores of the women in this terrific debut novel by Grace Sammon. Finished it in two sittings —one by night light because I could not put it down. The stories are poignant, funny, heart wrenching and with a few real surprises. A great read !
