What was once the flourishing island nation of Taurite, has become a prison of strict laws. Now everyone is forced to wear a necklace. Men are given keys, women heart-shaped locks; to find the match is to find one’s spouse. With a lack of money and rampant food shortages, citizens have no choice but to obey.
Seventeen-year-old Luella Deleon has only one goal: to protect her younger sisters. But as harsher laws begin to pass, her goal quickly begins to slip from her grasp. As Luella navigates new relationships and differing ideas, she is faced with the choice of bowing to her king or standing for her freedoms.

I don't typically read fantasy novels, but I can say that this book has encouraged me to read them more. I could have easily read this book in one sitting because of all the build-up and suspense!
My takeaways:
1) As the reader, I felt very engaged with the characters in the story which intensified all of the plot twists. While reading, many of my initial predictions of where the story was going to go were wrong. Despite that this is an easier read, the author definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat by creating conflict and resolution through unpredictable means.
2) I love that the author excludes excessive "filler content" from her book. Not only did this keep the story going, but it kept me engaged and interested. I quickly learned that every character, setting, relationship, etc was truly a valuable piece to the story.
3) Despite that this is a fantasy novel, many connections can be drawn between the societal/governmental conditions in the story and in modern-day life today.
4) I won't spoil it, but the ending was fantastic and I look forward to reading the sequel!
This book has been a wild ride from the beginning. A great commentary on relationships and society while providing an interesting and unique world as the setting. Recommended to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels for sure.
I would highly recommend this book. It is a griping tale and very well written. Grace has a very descriptive writing style that helps you to fully embrace each character. I was immediately engaged in the story and found it hard to put down. I am hoping for a sequel and I'm reading it again for the second time!
