I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

A trucker on the edge of bankruptcy, with the usual family problems finds himself roped into drug smuggling. I really felt like the protagonist was just too stupid.

What happens, when a good person is duped.

Trucker, hard working and honest, trying to make a living. But, with loads not paying, and the cost of fuel not to mention the time away from home, a decision was made for him. Totally without his knowledge. But, trying to make a quick buck by running drugs, was a bad decision.

Growing up my father drove a truck and would talk about some of the dark sides to the business. Georgia Rolling brings this side of the business out for everyone to experience.

Such an interesting read! There was so much about the trucking industry I was not aware of. This book explores the limits of what a man will do to keep his family together when life puts him in a tough spot. I enjoyed that the ending was more realistic to the consequences of the characters decisions rather then wrapping it up in a little pretty bow🎀.

The protagonist in 'Georgia Rolling:Drug Smuggling, Organized Crime, and One Good Man's Struggle to Save His Family' is an ordinary guy with an extraordinary set of circumstances.

Ron is on the cusp of divorce, his ex, Jenna, is still the love of his life and he's trying his best to be reunited with her and his little boy Jimmy. Enter his second love, the freedom of his 18 wheeler and being his own boss on the road. Love #2 has soured Jenna's love for Ron as his runs leave him very little time at home. All his miles and gas charges eat up his profits and other drivers frequently underbid one another.

Jenna thinks a good option is for Ron is to hook up with an Uncle of hers who is also in trucking. Here is where the trouble begins, Ron runs a 'hot' load courteousy of his ex in-laws, gets them out of a bind, but gets himself a taste for 'easy' money.

Ron's genuine good guy nature and trust in people gets him nowhere good, and pretty fast at that. From bailing out a friend who was also running 'hot' loads and his desire to 'just make enough' to tear down his dilapidated trailer and make Jenna and Jimmy a proper home, he's 'circling the drain' [sic].

This was an interesting read as I had no previous knowlege of a trucker's daily life. The lure to 'turn dirty' has to be immense for these men and women as many of them are barely scraping by. It's a pretty quick book that almost anyone would like with Ron's inner thoughts played aloud for us to understand.

The ending is kind of up in the air and may be addressed in a subsequent book.

Joel writes the stories of people's hearts and struggles when they are caught in compromising circumstances. He has insight into human weaknesses with compassion that has you cheering the characters on...hoping they will succeed...and crushed by their failures. Watching for more from this author.
Four star rating for excessive foul language...it grates on me.
