38 books72 followersAmbai (nom de plume of C. S. Lakshmi), is a historian, an independent Women's Studies researcher, and a feminist writer in Tamil. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts from Madras Christian College and MA in Bangalore and her PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her dissertation was on American policy towards refugees fleeing Hungary due to the failed revolution of 1956. After completing her education, she worked as a school teacher and college lecturer in Tamil Nadu. She is married to Vishnu Mathur, a film maker, and lives in Mumbai.
In 1962, Ambai published her first work Nandimalai Charalilae (lit. At Nandi Hills) – written when she was still a teenager. Her first serious work of fiction was the Tamil novel Andhi Maalai (lit. Twilight) published in 1966. She received critical acclaim with the short story Siragukal muriyum (lit. Wings Will be Broken) (1967) published in the literary magazine Kanaiyazhi. This story was later published in book form as a part of short story collection under the same name in 1976. The same year she was awarded a two-year fellowship to study the work of Tamil women writers. The research work was published as The Face behind the mask (Advent Books) in 1984. In 1988, her second Tamil short story collection titled Veetin mulaiyil oru samaiyalarai (lit. A Kitchen in the Corner of the House) was published. This established her reputation as a major short story writer.
Her work is characterised by her feminism, an eye for detail, and a sense of irony. Some of her works – A Purple Sea (1992) and In A Forest, A Deer (2006) – have been translated to English by Lakshmi Holmström. For her contributions to Tamil literature, she received the 2008 Iyal Virudhu (Lifetime Achievement Award) awarded by the Canada-based Tamil Literary Garden. She is currently the Director of SPARROW (Sound & Picture Archives for Research on Women).

வித்தியாசமான எழுத்து நடை. சிறப்பான சிறுகதைகள்.

I read the original Tamil version of this book. It had 13 short stories. Some of the stories like payanam 22, payanam 23, are small vignettes of the author’s meeting of minor characters in her travel experience.
Payanam 21 has more heft to it in that it describes the journey of the life of a person rather than mere vignette. It was poignant at the end. Poigai and singathin vaal seem more like thought experiments. Poigai is more controversial in the way it depicts gender and violence. I believe the author could have done a bit more to the story. Singathin vaal is a science fiction story gone awry. 1984 and saambal mel ezhum nagaram have their own themes in the 1984 riots and the story of gentrification in Mumbai. They have multiple characters’ life enmeshed in these events and how they have come out on the other side of these life altering events. They have a good theme but the narrative itself and the way it is written has to be a bit more clear. Irandu vetru naarkaaligal is a middling story about honouring our dead in the ways they would appreciate.
Now coming to the meat of the collection. Thondai pudaitha thaagam ondru resonated with me for the way it deals with the grief of a parent who had multiple ailments and whom you have taken care of in old age. The metaphorical crow does have its place in the Hindu mythology as the ancestor. Still I believe the story was written well. Veezhdal is a story that should have come with a trigger warning. But it talks about the love and attachment that one feels for a long time partner and what it means to lose them in your old age. This is also extremely poignant and brings about the pain and grief of the protagonist very nicely. Vil muriyatha swayamvarangal has the theme of an older woman choosing her own life partner and how her adult children try to prevent her from doing that citing money as the reason. But the protagonist is very clear on what she wants and makes it clear to her children too. Kudiraikaari is a funny story about using the urine of a horse to make one’s hair grow. It hits all the right punches and it is well written.
Finally sivappu kazhuthudan oru pachai paravai is a deeply resonant story about a girl (Thenmozhi)who is deaf. She has been adopted. Her father doesn’t like her to use sign language to express her thoughts. He wants her to speak. Also he wants her to get the cochlear implant to improve her hearing. Thenmozhi refuses to get the surgery and in a moving letter to her father tells him why she doesn’t need the external noise of the world to impact her inner peace. He makes the choice of leaving them saying he can’t handle her decision. Every part of this story is written so well. Especially Thenmozhi’s letter to her dad and Mythili’s musings in the end about the ethicality in chasing after a man who has willingly chosen to leave them.
All of these stories have the overarching theme of an older female protagonist and the problems she faces in today’s world. They also have a strong feminism to their stories.
Overall a very well written short story collection that I highly recommend.

மொத்த தொகுப்பை முடித்ததும் இதை தவிர வேற எந்த கதைகளும், கதைக்களமும், கதாபாத்திரங்களும் மனசில் நிற்கிற மாதிரியான பெரியதொரு தாக்கத்தையோ, வாசிப்பு அனுபவத்தையோ குடுக்காம போனது தான் மிகப்பெரிய ஏமாற்றம். முக்கியமா எழுத்து நடையும், ஒரு சிறிய பத்தியில் அதிக அளவு தொடர்ச்சியே இல்லமா முடிகிற சிறு சிறு வாக்கியங்களும், வேற்று மொழி குறித்தானா குறிப்புகளும், பாடல்களும், உரையாடல்களும் என்னைத் தொடர்ச்சியா கதையோட பயணிக்க முடியாதபடி இடைநிறுத்திய உணர்வு தான் பெரும்பாலும்.

I liked the style of writing much. Well written!
The anthology touched different topics in each story and it was refreshing to see no repeats.
The stories move unhurried, like life, and they do have too many layers of people in them.
வில் முறியாத சுயம்வரங்கள் turned out to be my favourite. The last line left me with a lingering smile. And I probably can't think of that story and not feel the subtlety touch me all over again. Beautiful it was.
To me though, I found some confusing. I got confused who's narrating and who's who with some stories. Save for that, a good read. And independent stories gave a chance to close the book and go back to it in intervals and live the narrative in their essence. Unhurried, I mean.

Most of her stories carry a deep sentimental component to them. And some of them hit their target. My eyes were moistened, heck, the tears even broke out at times. But these heart wrenching moments appear and before one can appreciate their full heart wrenching potential, they disappear and the next story begins.
Also, the one story that’s supposed to be a sci-fi… Huh, what was that all about!!?!

A Red-necked Green Bird (Simon & Schuster, India, 2021) is the latest collection of short stories by Ambai, pseudonym of much-fabled writer C. S. Lakshmi, translated from Tamil by GJV Prasad.
And GJV Prasad, the translator, has rendered the utterance of Ambai’s ‘many forms’ in the English language quite deftly. In its truest sense, he has, as Ambai mentions, taken “a seed from one soil” and successfully planted it in another, nourishing it with meaning by the excellence of his craft.
The city and its stories
There is an incessant crow that would perch near the window when there will be a music program comparing Hindustani and Carnatic ragas, making the narrator of A Red-necked Green Bird wonder whether “it was a South Indian crow that had migrated to Maharashtra.” It could be a metaphor for the author’s dwelling in Mumbai. The city that she has successfully seeped into her narratives, making them richer, distinct, and diverse in the most Indian of ways.
An example of that is the story titled “The City that Rises from Ashes,” where the many incidents of bulldozing the city’s not-so-aesthetic parts to create paradise-like apartments are described. Taking Urmila, a seventy-five-year-old woman who dies of suicide, failing to make mends with the thought that her 90 year old mother-in-law would be transferred into an old-age home as she’s unable to gather strength to take care of her at this age, the story humanises the everyday struggles of caring and the labor of love. With Kamli, in the same story, who always “gaze[s] at the trees out of the front room window,” Ambai makes the most marginalised seen by sharing their stories in A Red-necked Green Bird, which are as relevant and contribute as much as anyone else’s in the changing face of Mumbai.
Further, what’s interesting about these short stories is that it not only features human conflicts at the forefront, it creates a dialogue between all elements that form the core of an ecosystem of which we are a part of, but consistently fail to register and appreciate their presence. They create and celebrate the most exacting of portraits of the human condition. And Ambai supplies these portraits in abundance in A Red-necked Green Bird.
Sounds of silence
The titular story, and the lengthiest of all, “A Red-necked Green Bird” is an exercise and meditation in practicing love by letting go. Vasanthan — a righteous man who even refused to take a fairness cream advertisement — leaves his wife Mythili and Thenmozhi, their adopted daughter with a hearing disability, to become a “Goonga Baba,” pleasuring himself a life of solitude in the mountains. Upon discovering him, Mythili frees him from everything, even “[f]rom the love between you and me as well.” It seems each character in these stories is begging to feel light and ephemeral. In “Falling,” we see the semblances of the freedom that Bauji in Rajat Kapoor’s Ankhon Dekhi (2013) in the 72-year old — “expiry time” — wife of Sathya feels when she “[w]ith Behag playing in her heart,” begins to slowly descend from the balcony of a hotel.
“Swayamvars with No Bows Broken” introduces us to a lonely Shanti after the demise of her husband, Arun. When her children try to convince her to “find a companion” on a website, she tells them that she’s seeing someone. The ‘concerned’ children were worried whether their mother had signed any papers. Though she’s seeing an old friend, “[s]he cannot forget Arun. Cannot erase him.” She “had known desire and longing,” but doesn’t feel that urge anymore; however, she wonders whether her partner would pester for sex.
With a cyborg as a principal character, “The Lion’s Tail” explores the terrain of desire in the modern era and asks whether our idea of intimate relationships is limited to humans alone. This story in A Red-necked Green Bird may remind people of Theodore falling for Samantha — an operating system, which comes with an AI-enabled virtual assistant — in Spike Jonze’s Her (2013). It also tables tangential discussions on language, “male-female gender divide” in our dimension, fluidity of sexuality, interpretation of dreams, and the limits of scientific temperament.
I loved all stories except “The Pond”. This story makes the use of the transformation of a man entering a pond into a woman to help him realise “fully what it meant to be a woman in this cruel period of the 21st century.” I fail to wrap my head around this. Do we need this trickery to convey this thought? I don’t think so. Because not only the story conforms to the stereotypical discrimination between a ‘man’ and a ‘woman’, it also erases violence experienced by people identifying beyond the gender binary or not conforming to gender at all. It solidifies the victimhood associated with women. Something that I believe we need to steer away from when we talk of equal rights and representation.
A Red-necked Green Bird (Simon & Schuster, India, 2021) is the latest collection of short stories by Ambai, pseudonym of much-fabled writer C. S. Lakshmi, translated from Tamil by GJV Prasad.
Exploring themes such as old age, abandonment, parenting and children, love, sexuality, solitude, and choice, the short stories in A Red-necked Green Bird are eclectic and nonconforming in equal measure. They are a testimony of Ambai’s prowess as a writer. Or, in her words, these stories are versions of herself.
And GJV Prasad, the translator, has rendered the utterance of Ambai’s ‘many forms’ in the English language quite deftly. In its truest sense, he has, as Ambai mentions, taken “a seed from one soil” and successfully planted it in another, nourishing it with meaning by the excellence of his craft.
The city and its stories
There is an incessant crow that would perch near the window when there will be a music program comparing Hindustani and Carnatic ragas, making the narrator of A Red-necked Green Bird wonder whether “it was a South Indian crow that had migrated to Maharashtra.” It could be a metaphor for the author’s dwelling in Mumbai. The city that she has successfully seeped into her narratives, making them richer, distinct, and diverse in the most Indian of ways.
An example of that is the story titled “The City that Rises from Ashes,” where the many incidents of bulldozing the city’s not-so-aesthetic parts to create paradise-like apartments are described. Taking Urmila, a seventy-five-year-old woman who dies of suicide, failing to make mends with the thought that her 90 year old mother-in-law would be transferred into an old-age home as she’s unable to gather strength to take care of her at this age, the story humanises the everyday struggles of caring and the labor of love. With Kamli, in the same story, who always “gaze[s] at the trees out of the front room window,” Ambai makes the most marginalised seen by sharing their stories in A Red-necked Green Bird, which are as relevant and contribute as much as anyone else’s in the changing face of Mumbai.
Further, what’s interesting about these short stories is that it not only features human conflicts at the forefront, it creates a dialogue between all elements that form the core of an ecosystem of which we are a part of, but consistently fail to register and appreciate their presence. They create and celebrate the most exacting of portraits of the human condition. And Ambai supplies these portraits in abundance in A Red-necked Green Bird.
Sounds of silence
The titular story, and the lengthiest of all, “A Red-necked Green Bird” is an exercise and meditation in practicing love by letting go. Vasanthan — a righteous man who even refused to take a fairness cream advertisement — leaves his wife Mythili and Thenmozhi, their adopted daughter with a hearing disability, to become a “Goonga Baba,” pleasuring himself a life of solitude in the mountains. Upon discovering him, Mythili frees him from everything, even “[f]rom the love between you and me as well.” It seems each character in these stories is begging to feel light and ephemeral. In “Falling,” we see the semblances of the freedom that Bauji in Rajat Kapoor’s Ankhon Dekhi (2013) in the 72-year old — “expiry time” — wife of Sathya feels when she “[w]ith Behag playing in her heart,” begins to slowly descend from the balcony of a hotel.
“Swayamvars with No Bows Broken” introduces us to a lonely Shanti after the demise of her husband, Arun. When her children try to convince her to “find a companion” on a website, she tells them that she’s seeing someone. The ‘concerned’ children were worried whether their mother had signed any papers. Though she’s seeing an old friend, “[s]he cannot forget Arun. Cannot erase him.” She “had known desire and longing,” but doesn’t feel that urge anymore; however, she wonders whether her partner would pester for sex.

A decent collection of short stories. This is my first by Ambai. Some of the stories are beautiful while I felt some others were trying way too much. In a few stories, I found stuff crammed without having a lot of relevance to the story. In a few others, I found confusing narration like someone else spoke here. I am not exactly sure if that's supposed to be language barrier. I am not sure how it reads in the original Thamizh, but there is a big chance I lost some nuance in translation. There are descriptions of food, places, music, movies, science, and the stories touch a wide variety of themes. It was an interesting read except for a few of them. I am curious enough to pick more by the author.

The bird in the title is unmistakably the Coppersmith Barbet. However, the stories are morbid with an underlying theme of physical/mental disability, chronic illness or death. Another theme underpinning the stories is music and poetry – mainly Carnatic music, but also Hindi film songs and even a John Lennon composition from The Beatles! There is a lame attempt at SF. I feel the essence of the stories has been lost in translation.
Having said all this, I consider the first story about the crow as one of the most poignant stories that I have read.

The author says in the beginning that windows have continued to play a major role in her life – they are openings to see the outer world from within – each window presents a different view. The other constant in each story is music, which evokes diverse emotions in different situations. Windows and music are a metaphor for human relationships dictated by situations.
An ageing woman is reminded of her father who died of throat cancer in the way a crow keeps coming to her kitchen window to be fed delicacies and listen to music that her father liked. Another ageing woman has lost her husband and contemplates suicide due to the indifferent attitude of her son living in USA – she is past her expiry date. A man leaves his family one day, renouncing the material world, without caring for the upheaval in the lives of his wife and born-deaf daughter. A man must turn into a woman for one night to understand the daily trauma that women go through in the 21st century. A woman loses her near and dear ones to the killings in 1984 in the name of religion. A woman is pelted with stones by people because of her conversion to another religion to earn money for her family. A woman scientist makes love to a cyborg from 11th dimension.
There are 13 stories, each talking about what women have endured since time immemorial in a patriarchal society. But these are not weak women – woman, in fact, is the stronger of the two. The stories talk to you in simple language, about a complex subject – relationship.
The stories have been translated from Tamil by GJV Prasad. Tamil words have been retained in passages, followed by English translation. But they do not detract from the story – they enhance the flavour.

2021ம் ஆண்டிற்கான சாகித்திய அகாதமி விருது பெற்ற புத்தகம் இது. பல வருடங்களுக்குப் பிறகு ஒரு பெண் எழுத்தாளர் இந்த விருதை வென்றார் என்று பத்திரிகைகளும் எழுத்தாளர் அம்பையை கொண்டாடின.
ஆதலால், மிகுந்த ஆர்வத்துடன் இந்த நாவலை வாங்கிப் படித்தேன். ஆனால் உண்மையைச் சொல்ல வேண்டுமானால், இந்தப் புத்தகத்திலுள்ள எந்தவொரு சிறுகதையும் என்னை ஈர்க்கவில்லை. எழுத்தாளருக்கு நிச்சயம் சுவையான கதையை தேர்ந்தெடுக்க முடியும் தான். ஆனால், கதையோட்டமோ கதையின் முடிவோ என்னை மகிழ்விக்கவில்லை.

The stories are laced with layered and unhurried ways of life, a style i like. However, multiple narratives in every story left me confused.

அம்பையின் இந்த புத்தகம் 13 சிறு கதைகளின் தொகுப்பு ஆகும். எனக்கு இதில் 3 கதைகளே பிடித்திருந்தது.
1. தொண்டை புடைத்த காகம்:
முப்பதில் இருக்கும் கல்யாணி என்ற பெண்ணின் அடுப்பங்கரையின் சாளரம் வழியாக தொண்டை புடைத்த காகம் ஒன்றை பார்க்கிறாள். அது அவளுக்கு, தனது தந்தையை நினைவூட்டுகிறது. ஏன்? எதனால் என்பதே கதையாகும்.
2. சிவப்புக் கழுத்துடன் ஒரு பச்சை பறவை:
வசந்தனும் மைத்திலியும் தேன்மொழி என்ற பிள்ளையை தத்தெடுத்து வளர்த்து வந்தனர். அவளுக்கு காது கேளாது என்று உணர்ந்த வசந்தன், தேனுவின் குறைகளை அறுவைச் சிகிச்சை மூலம் சரி செய்யலாம் என்று யோசனை கூற, தேன்மொழி தரும் பதிலும் அதை வசந்தன் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் விதமும் கதையை அடுத்த கட்டத்திற்கு நகர்த்தி செல்கிறது.
• இதில் எனக்குப் பிடித்தவை: காது கேட்க இயலாதவர்களின் அன்றாட வாழ்க்கையில் சந்திக்கும் சிரமங்களும், அவர்கள் வாழும் அந்த தனிப்பட்ட உலகத்தையும், அதில் நிலவும் அமைதியையும் ஆசிரியர் அழகாக எழுதியுள்ளார்.
3. வில் முறியாத சுயம்வரங்கள்:
அறுபதுகளில் கணவனை இழந்த பெண், தனக்கு விருப்பம் இருந்தால் ஒரு துணையைத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கலாம் என்பதே கதை. சாந்தியின் கணவர் இறந்து 2 வருடங்கள் கழிந்தது. அவளின் பிள்ளைகள் அவளை தனக்கு பிடித்த துணையை "சுயம்வர்" என்ற திட்டத்தில் கலந்து கொண்டு தேர்வு செய்யும் படி கூறுகிறார்கள். அதற்கு சாந்தி என்ன பதில் கூறுவார்?
எல்லா கதைக்களமும் வித்தியாசமாக உள்ள நிலையில் சில கதைகளின் மையங்கள் எனக்கு விளங்கவில்லை. பெண்களை சார்ந்தே கதைகள் இருக்கின்றன; சிறு கதைகளின் கருத்துக்கள் மிகவும் யோசிக்கும் படியே இயற்றப் பட்டுள்ளன. சில கதைகளின் இடை இடையே வேற்று மொழிகள் புகுத்தப்பட்டு இருப்பதால் படிப்பதற்கு கடினமாக உள்ளது. அது மட்டுமின்றி கதையின் நடுவில் தொடர்ச்சி இன்றி ஆரம்பிப்பதும், தொடருவதும் செறிவு குறையை ஏற்படுத்தும் வகையில் அமைந்துள்ளது.

This book by Ambai is a collection of 13 short stories. I liked three of them.
1. A crow's swollen throat:
Kalyani, a woman in her thirties, sees a crow with its throat swollen through the window of her hearth. It reminds her of her father. Why?
2. A green bird with a red neck:
Vasanthan and Maithili adopt a child named Thenmozhi. Realising that she is deaf, Vasanthan suggests that Thenu's disability can be corrected through surgery. Thenmozhi's response and how Vasanthan accepts his daughter's response makes the rest of the story to the next level.
• What I liked about it: The author beautifully writes about the difficulties faced by the deaf in their daily lives, the private world they live in, and the peace that prevails in it.
• The significance of the title: Coppersmith Barbet is an Asian barbet with crimson forehead and throat, known for its metronomic call that sounds similar to a coppersmith striking metal with a hammer. And one day Vasanthan gets hit by this bird's enthralling sound, making him realise and accept everything he had denied before.
3. Marriage after 60's:
The story is that of women can find their partner in their sixties after their husbands pass away.
Two years have passed since Shanti's husband passed away. Her children ask her to participate in a program called "Swayamvar" and choose her partner. What will Shanti answer?
All the storylines are different and some of the storylines are not clear to me. Stories revolve around women and the ideas of the short stories are very thoughtfully composed. Some of the stories are interspersed with foreign languages, making it difficult to read. Not only that, it starts and continues without continuity in the middle of the story which leads to lack of concentration.

அம்மா ஒரு கொலை செய்தாள் மூலம் அம்பை அறிமுகம் ஆனார் எனக்கு. நூலகத்தில் ஏதேர்ச்சையாக கையில் கிடைத்தது இந்த சிறுகதை தொகுப்பு எந்த முன்னனுமானமும் இல்லாது வாசிக்க தொடங்கினேன் அற்புதமான எழுத்து நடையில் எப்பொழுதும் போல அம்பை கதை வடித்திருந்தார். எனக்கு நிறைய புது அனுபவங்கள் கிடைத்து அம்பையின் வடிவில் சொல்ல வேண்டுமென்றால்
அம்பையின் ஜன்னல் வழியே பார்த்த உலகத்தை நானும் பார்க்க நேர்ந்தத்து ஒரு புது அனுபவ பயணமாக இருந்தது.

A compilation of short stories... laying my hands on Ambai's works for the first time though I have heard many laud and buzz her work.
The stories revolve around women whom we come across everyday, relate to & look upon as a reflection of oneself.
Depth of narration and drawing parallels to the main plot adds necessary twists-turns and captivates the reader.
There is an emotion of pain/want/vaccum/love which is overcome/fulfilled by the strength of the character. Each story has a subtle layering of music which adds an aesthetic impact.
It is neither an extraordinary event nor character but a window into a women's world which we might just pass on for something ordinary.

Depth of narration and drawing parallels to the main plot adds necessary twists-turns and captivates the reader.
There is an emotion of pain/want/vaccum/love which is overcome/fulfilled by the strength of the character. Each story has a subtle layering of music which adds an aesthetic impact.
It is neither an extraordinary event nor character but a window into a women's world which we might just pass on for something ordinary.

அம்பையின் படைப்பில் நான் படிக்கும் முதல் புத்தகம் இது. அப்படி என்ன எழுதியதற்கு இப்புத்தகத்திற்கு சாஹித்திய அகாடெமி விருது கொடுத்தார்கள் என வாசிக்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். முதல் இரண்டு கதைகளில் அவ்வளவாக பிடிப்பு வரவில்லை மூன்றாம் சிறுகதைக்கு பிறகு நிறைய பிடித்து போனது. தலைப்பு கதையைக் காட்டிலும் 'வில் முறியாத ஸ்வயம்வரங்கள்' கதையும் '1984' கதையும் அதிகமாக பிடித்திருந்தது. எல்லாக்கதைகளிலும் ஒரு அமைப்பு இருப்பதைக் கண்டேன் - வெளிநாட்டிற்கு இடம்பெயர்ந்த பிள்ளைகள், நடுத்தர வயது பெண்மணிகள், அவர்களுக்கும் முதிர்ந்தோருடனான உறவு, பல பண்பாடு நட்புகள். அம்பையின் மற்ற படைப்புகள் எவ்வாறு இருக்கும் என ஆர்வம் கொண்டுள்ளேன்.

சிவப்புக் கழுத்துடன் ஒரு பச்சைப் பறவை - அம்பை.
பெண்களை குறித்து எழுதப்பட்ட 13 சிறுகதைகள்.
ஒவ்வொரு கதையும் பெண்களின் தனிமையின் ஆதங்கத்தை வெளிபடுத்தும் வகையில் உள்ளது. கதைகளும் சூழ்நிலைகளும் வெவ்வேறாக இருப்பினும் அது தரும் வலி ஒன்றேயாகும்.
இந்த புத்தகத்தை படித்து முடிப்பது மிக கடினமாக திகழும், ஏனெனில் கதாபாத்திரங்களின் வலி நம் வலியாகவே தோன்றும். ஆகவே அதில் இருந்து வெளிவந்து மீண்டும் படிக்க எனக்கு மிக கடினமாக இருந்தது.

September 13, 2023what a wonderful collection of short stories, totally loved reading these many characters and their emotions and their day-to-day activities like enjoying their tea, etc., and my favorite pick from the collection is the Sci-fi story It is in a top class and I literally love all the stories to, a lot of stories has a nice sarcasm of the society I totally enjoyed that part and some made me smile like in the story about the Horse and eagerly waiting to read other works from this author to.

வீழ்தல் , சிவப்பு கழுத்துடன் ஒரு பறவை , வில் முறியாத சுயம்வரங்கள் ஆகியன முற்றிலும் மாறுபட்ட புதுமையான கதைகள்.சில சொற்கள் வேற்று மொழி என்பதால் வாசிக்க கஸ்டமாக இருந்தன.அம்பை தனித்துவமான எழுத்தாளர் என்பது இக்கதைகளில் காணலாம்.
