Outstanding Praise for the Novels of Lisa Jackson
“A pure nail biter.” —Harlan Coben, #1 New York Times bestselling author
"Jam-packed with scary chills." –Booklist
"Absolutely tension filled. . .Jackson is on top of her game." –Suspense Magazine
Lisa Jackson is the number-one New York Times bestselling author of over ninety-five novels, including the Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya Series, the Pescoli and Alvarez Series, the Savannah series, and numerous stand alone novels. She also is the co-author of One Last Breath, Last Girl Standing, and the Colony Series, written with her sister and bestselling author Nancy Bush, as well as the collaborative novels Sinister and Ominous, written with Nancy Bush and Rosalind Noonan. There are over thirty million copies of her novels in print and her writing has been translated into twenty languages.
Before she became a nationally bestselling author, she was a mother struggling to keep food on the table by writing novels, hoping against hope that someone would pay her for them. Today, neck deep in murder, her books appear on The New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly national bestseller lists.
With dozens of bestsellers to her name, Lisa Jackson is a master of taking readers to the edge of sanity—and back—in novels that buzz with dangerous secrets and deadly passions. She continues to be fascinated by the minds and motives of both her killers and their pursuers—the personal, the professional, and the downright twisted. As she builds the puzzle of relationships, actions, clues, lies, and personal histories that haunt her protagonists, she must also confront the fear and terror faced by her victims and the harsh and enduring truth that, in the real world, terror and madness touch far too many lives and families.
I won a free copy of this book, and I’m sorry to say it is not my style. I hope we have moved past the point as a society where anyone thinks it is ok for a man to pin a woman against the wall and kiss her against her will. That is called sexual assault. Shame on the author for perpetuating this behavior. We can’t all live in Harlequin Wonderland where everything turns out fine because the woman ends up sexually attracted to (“in love with”) the man who assaulted her.

Well known for her Romantic Suspense books, these two did not live up to her normally high standards. They are both well-written, but the content left me disappointed. The blend between romance and suspense was tilted into a lot of graphic intimate moments, taking away from the mystery/suspense. I found myself skipping page after page trying to find something I found interesting. This is being hyped as psychological thrillers .. I don't think so.
Many thanks to the author / Kensington Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of MISTRUST. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Vintage Silhouette novels published in 1985 and 1987 compiled together under compilation copyright by Kensington Publishing Corp.
The two stories have the feel of the past and as I remember the 1980’s well knew they were true to the times and to that writing style. If you are looking for two books in one to read that will take you back to evil doers doing their best to make money without conscience, enjoy a second chance romance, like the thwarting of bad guys, and prefer a happy ending then this compilation might just be for you.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington-Zebra for the Copy – This is my honest review.
I did not read the original books that distrust I based on so I really don't understand the bad reviews. I enjoyed both the stories in this book , even though they did seem to drag out a little , I still enjoyed"Distrust" and look forward to reading more of Lisa Jackson's books. Thank you PJV
Lisa Jackson's books are either top notch amazing or they're lacking in some of the ways that make her books unputtdownable. Sadly, these two in missed the mark for me. I’m just going to do a quick double type of review. Lisa Jackson’s writing is on par as her usual… it’s descriptive and interesting. The characters and plot were a bit lacking in both of the books. I didn’t feel any great pull to them and they weren’t all that interesting. If I can’t find myself rooting for the characters than I generally struggle through the book.
The narration by Erin Bennett was good. She didn’t knock my socks off but that could also be partly to do with the story itself. The narration on a book can depend on the story just as much as their inflections and ways of portraying the emotions of the story. I think I was emotionally detached from these stories. There was nothing wrong with the narration but my interest was not held.
Thank you Brilliance Publishing for the complimentary copy of this audiobook with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.
I picked up this book because it was in the mystery section at the airport… I finished it out of spite for having purchased it. I’ve read my share of romance novels; but these were a true struggle to finish. The romance in the first story lacked believability and the second was an improvement but still just didn’t do it for me. Maybe I’ll one day try another from this author since other reviewers also claim that this is not her best work; but for now, it’s for sure not on my radar.
I really like Lisa Jackson, but I didn't like this book. I read about 20%, to be fair, I didn't finish it. I just couldn't get into the story. I really wanted to like it since I like her books so much. I will continue to read her books, just not this one
The first story I really enjoyed the development of the characters and it was an interesting story. The second one started out with a good plot but lost me with all the sex... it was a lot of sex! Would have rather dealt more with the plot.
I couldn't get very far in this book. I thought it was terrible. The "man" against the "little lady". The constant thoughts of the main characters describing each other in their minds are very sexual. Reminded me of a Harlequin Romance. Yuck! Then another male character told the first man that he thinks the woman is probably a "wild cat" in bed. Oh my gosh, please...
A richly woven story with amazing atmosphere. This is two story’s and I will speak to each respectively. The first story was not my favourite, the characters behaviour actually annoyed me throughout. It was not very realistic. But the way the landscape and characters life is brought to life is very well done and worth a read. The second story was much better and I liked the characters much more. Again a rich landscape which I love. This one followed a more solid storyline and was a nice read albeit not overly dramatic.
Both stories would fall under a more romance type read vs anything suspenseful or mystery.
As always, an interest-holding introduction of characters and a great read from author Lisa Jackson!
Chase, a down on his luck company owner, closes a deal with shifty Caleb. This, in his last ditch effort to save ownership of his company.
Eventually, while scouting out necessary property that is a MUST buy for the resort project he now is now involved in, Chase meets Dani. She is a staunch landowner who will NOT sell her land to Caleb.. She lets Chase know this with her Winchester! However, Chase and Dani think about each other after this encounter...
Caleb "suggests" to Chase that getting close to Dani is the ticket to her land...
A wonderful read, as always.
Many Thanks to Zebra Books/Kensington Books and NetGalley for an excellent story.
Dani Hawthorne Summers is a single mom struggling to keep her family’s farm afloat just as Chase McEnroe is struggling to do the same for his business. Enter Caleb Johnson, a shady businessman with the capital to entice Chase and intimidate Dani. Family secrets, underhanded dealings and ghosts from the past make up this drama.
I would not call this story suspense. There is drama and sex. Any small amount of intrigue is fairly quickly squashed. The plot seems to take a backseat to the attempt at a love story between the two main characters and moves along painfully slow until the very end when it wraps up all the loose strings very quickly. The writing is not very complex and not at all what I would expect from a seasoned author. It was a decent enough read but not one I can recommend to others.
Dani’s character is very unlikeable. I felt that she was always so wound up to the point of falling into conventional angry female stereotypes. It is possible to be a bad-ass and independent without being overly aggressive and hostile to everyone before determining that that individual deserves it. You just want to tell her to shut up and listen to someone other than her own internal monologue. After a while you start to see why her husband left her. Chase’s character starts off okay. Just a normal guy trying to get by and stay out of other people’s drama. But enter chapter 3 and he decides to get rapey? How is the author going to confuse romance and seduction with non-consensual and criminal sexual contact. I mean, Dani clearly was resistant several times. And to make sure we are all extra uncomfortable and/or repulsed, Dani decides to do a 360 and not only succumb to the other extreme of female stereotypes but actually desire being weak and helpless for the touch of a man with six-pack abs. Oy vey!
Midnight Sun
Ashley Stephens has recently inherited her family’s timber business. Trevor Daniels is a member of a competing timber family and currently campaigning for a Senate seat. The history between the two is filled with passion, regret, fond memories and bitter resentments. A death and a near death bring these two star-crossed lovers back to each other to investigate the mysteries of their families' pasts and the shady dealings of the present.
Much like the other story, there is a lot of concern around character traits that are promoted as positives. Trevor Daniels is a walking red flag. From his (or the author’s) contempt for feminism to his constant need to physically restrain a woman he professes to love. He verbally admonishes and diminishes Ashley and her integrity. And then puts angry hands on her….often and it’s never even hinted that this isn’t okay. And when he isn’t physically or verbally abusing her, he is squashing her voice as if she were a small child. Ashley takes his abuse and then allows herself to succumb to sexual passion for this man who just mistreated her. It’s as if the author thinks sex requires violence. Also like the other story, the dialogue and plot are stilted as if written by a novice. It feels like everything is rushed and poorly presented for the sole purpose of delivering a sex scene which the author then takes the time and dedication to deliver with great prose.
I will say however that in this story, there is an attempt at suspense. Not any kind of psychological thriller or who-done-it but just a little mystery. And happily you aren’t able to guess what’s going to happen at every bend though the overall plot mystery is trite and transparent.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book via Goodreads and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Distrust is a two novel collection of the 1995 book Renegade Son and the 1997 book Midnight Sun. Renegade Son is about Caleb Johnson wanting to buy Daniele’s property to build Summer Ridge, but she won’t sell him her land. Chase was sent to Dani Summers property to find a way to get her to sell her land to Caleb. Three months ago Cody’s father wrote a letter to him giving him hope that he would return to the farm. Everyday Cody went to the mailbox hoping to find another letter. It’s been seven years since Cody has seen his father. Dani divorced Blake five years ago after he sold part of her family’s land. He ran off with another woman leaving her with a four year old son. Cody remains hopeful her parents will reunite. On top of being threatened by Caleb to take her land she also had to deal with her ex trying to take her son away from her. Her only ally might be the guy who is partners with Caleb. The problem is she’s not sure she can trust him. Nonetheless, Chase upsets her life more than she would have ever thought possible. Both are short story’s with each including fourteen chapters. Renegade Son is an insta-love romance with an element of enemy to lovers. Dani was an excellent mother and her son Cody was a likable character. Chase’s character never gave up on Dani proving his loyalty. Where the story fell short was in Dani’s inability to trust. The story was a bit wordy in places.
Midnight Sun is about Ashley being an outsider within her family. She was accustomed to the gossip from her family. Ashley inherited her fathers business Stephens Timber which made matters worse with her cousin. Stephens Timber Corporation and Daniels Logging Company were both competitive families fighting for the same timber business. When Ashley began dating her rival Daniel her father disowned her, yet upon his death left her the company. Midnight Sun is a second chance romance with the enemy to lovers element.
Both story focus on female characters who don’t trust men because they got burned by men in the past. They build a wall around their heart to protect them from getting hurt. But love is the cure that breaks down the wall. Both were okay. I wasn’t completely invested in the characters from either story. I was disappointed by how much distrust was thrust into the characters, yet all was pushed aside when sexual desire came into play. I was bothered by the ploy to create a strong willed independent female character weakened by sex with the one guy she hated yet loved. The attempt to create a forbidden relationship was overshadowed by all this distrust. I’m surprised by the number of spelling errors in both these books. An editor needs to reread both books and fix the errors. Normally I wouldn’t care, but were talking about books written in 1995 and 1997. These are releases with the same mistakes. Both books had too many details zapping the story of subtext. I skim read through both books. This was one of those on-the-nose narratives where every minute detail was included.
I first want to say or I guess I have to admit that this is my first approved request on net gallery. I was so excited for it to be a book from one of my favorite authors Lisa Jackson.
The following book is actually too short stories Renegade Sun and Midnight Sun. I have to admit that I am not a fan of short stories and that I also didn’t read the previous release stories to the short stories.
I believe since these are short stories they did not include all of the excitement that I expected.
My favorite would have to be Renegade Sun. I quite enjoyed Danni’s character she was very spunky full of energy and made me want to continue reading. Of course since it is a short story I felt as though it needed more substance or a sequel to it it just fell a bit too short. Now with Midnight Sun I have to say that while I was reading this I was often annoyed with both of the main characters. Ashley come on grow a backbone please! And Trevor I feel like he would cry if he did not get his way. Such a manipulator. And the ending… what happened to Claud?????? I understand that I guess there has to be some type of diversity in characters but I would not be reading another book with a character like Ashley’s she was a bit too weak.
……………….. Thank you very much Lisa Jackson, Kensington BookS, Zebra, and NetGallery for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book is a collection of two of her early novels from the 1980s. I was ready to stop after reading the first 25 pages but for some reason I powered on and finished the first book. Curiosity I guess. I did not even open the second book even though other reviewers said it was better than the first. I suppose this genre is an acquired taste and those who enjoy romance novels with a little steam might like these. For some reason I thought these were going to be thrillers or mysteries. My mistake for starting them. They were far too predictable — like a 1950’s cowboy movie. Attractive single mother trying to manage the family farm on her own, evil older man trying to steal her farm, young handsome farmhand comes in to win her trust and save her… I’m sure you can guess how it all turns out. Sorry, not for me.
I am a fan of Lisa Jackson. However, these two stories were not her best. The first one left me with questions about out who did what and the second one was more soft porn than a mystery. Her constant description about the colors of her characters eyes and hair made feel like I was inside a box of crayons. Her hair was black but that was constantly repeated. And th at goes for his hair. It felt she had been challenged to see how times and ways black hair, brown hair, blue eyes and green eyes could be described. The constant sex was just not believable. Just disappointed. Where was her editor?
I usually enjoy this author but I was extremely disappointed. The story lines were pretty lame, the characters lacked depth, and she failed terribly at trying to create strong women characters. One minute they'd be smart and independent and the next completely incapable because of raging hormones from being near a hot guy. It was bizarre and sad. She needs to leave sexy steamy story writing to Sandra Brown and go back to murder dramas.
I hate to say bad things about the reader but she was disappointing too. Sometimes she sounded like she had a cold. And the male leads, especially in the second story, sounded creepy not sexy.
Distrust is a actually two rereleased short stories by Lisa Jackson. Both stories include mystery, intrigue and romance. Renegade Son was a cute read with fun characters. There was mystery but nothing thriller type mystery. Hmmmm, more of a suspenseful plot. Midnight Son was ok. I didn’t like it as much as Renegade Son. It just didn’t keep my interest very well. All in all, interesting stories. Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.
The first book Renegade Son was a book about a stubborn lady that fell in love with the neighbor's lost son. The second book Midnight Sun was about about a lady who loves a guy who is actually quite abusive both physically and emotionally. There both not mystery or thriller but romance novels.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
2 books in 1. Renegade Son is the first story in Distrust. Danielle Summers is single mom who owns a ranch. The neighbor by her wants it and he seems to be shady. Things keep happening on the ranch and she has an idea who is doing it but has no proof. Now his partner comes onto the scene and she doesn't trust him either. But there is chemistry between the 2 of them and he doesn't seem to trust his partner either. Meanwhile her ex, who walked out years ago seems to want to be a part of her son's life but she wants nothing to do with him.
Midnight Sun is the 2nd story in this book. There’s nothing secretive about the hostility between two of Oregon’s leading lumber families. The feud has been long, ruthless, and bloody, and Ashley Stephens and Trevor Daniels are still reeling from the damage it’s caused. Now it is 8 years later and Ashley's dad has died and he left the business for her. Trevor is running for the senate and his life seems to be in jeopardy. They had a relationship years ago and neither got over each other.
I enjoyed having 2 short stories in 1 book. This author has written suspense with romance thrown in. The main characters I really enjoyed and with both stories I had an idea of what was going on.
Thank you to Kensington and NetGalley for the ARC to review.
This book contains two previously released books. In the first story, Renegade Son, single mother Dani is convinced the her wealthy neighbor is trying to sabotage her ranch so she will be forced to sell to him. When Chase comes into her life, Dani isn’t sure she should trust him. He works for the man trying to buy her land. In Midnight Sun, Ashley is trying to run the Timber company her father left her. But her old flame, and son of the competing company comes back in her life with accusations, she knows she needs to prove her family innocent of what he’s accusing, and not let her heart fall for him again.
I love Lisa Jackson’s books, and this one was another I enjoyed. Both stories were good, and had happily ever afters. But some points in the stories failed to hold my interest. I found that the female characters were both strong, and independent, and I liked them. I like the male characters as well. Overall both stories were good, and enjoyable. I’d recommend them. But these books are older books, only re-released. So they do reflect their age.
The two novellas in this book are older books being re-released. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
Renegade Son
I liked Chase and Dani. Dani is spunky and Chase is quite alpha. There are a lot of twists and turns in this romantic suspense. There is a dog and an equally spunky kid so I couldn’t help but like the book.
Midnight Sun
This is a second chance romance. Ashley is smart, determined and surrounded by greed, deception and ruthlessness. Trevor is smart and Ashley’s cousin is trying to destroy his career. This book has a lot of angst and deceit. It’s a very interesting book.
I absolutely loved this book, it’s two complete stories in one. Loved the suspense level of both books. I was emotionally connected from the beginning and couldn’t stop reading. In the first, Danielle (Dani) is a single Mom and loved how we’re not sure who’s sabotaging her land. Loved how quickly Chase and Dani fall for each other, but can she trust him? In the second story, loved how we’re not sure what went wrong with Ashley and Trevor. Who’s family did wrong? Loved how they realize they still love each other, but can they trust each other? I actually had some tears for them and glad they got their happy ever after. This book is worth re reading. I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy through NetGalley and I highly recommend this book.
I got this book as a Goodreads and Between the Chapters win. I love Lisa Jacksons books and this one is another great read. It contains 2 books,Renegade son, and Midnight Sun. Renegade Son is the story of single mom, Danielle Summers, who believes her ranch is being sabatoged by the man trying to buy her land. Enter Chase McEnroe, who is there to make the stream better for fishing,by the man who is trying to buy Summer's land. Can she trust Chase or is he working for the man. The ending has surprises. As for Midnight Sun, Can Ashley Stephens and Trevor Daniels find their way back to the love they once had for each other, or will their past family history destroy their love once and for all. Can they solve the mystery of what happened to Trevors dad and what is going on now
