The true spirit master remains at large. Tolan might be the only one able to stop him, but he must find the truth within himself first.
The element bonds, for so long the primary way to reach the power of the elements, have been tainted. The threat Tolan has long feared has revealed himself but escaped before his plan could be stopped. Now Tolan and his allies must travel beyond the waste to search for answers.
The journey again takes him away from his teaching responsibilities. Now that Tolan has gifted the knowledge of spirit to other spirit shapers, he's no longer certain he's the best spirit instructor, especially not when another exists who's so much more skilled with spirit than him. If he's not the spirit master for the Academy, then how can he best serve the Academy?
Another attack beyond the waste forces his hand. What he finds are more questions and a plot deadlier than anything he's ever faced before. Tolan struggles to stop Var, but how can he stop a master spirit shaper who knows everything he does?
I liked this book better than the first but still not a five star read even though I wanted it to be. There’s something lacking, not a deep enough connection to the characters. Too much repetition, the whole story could have been tightened up. Don’t get me wrong, DK Holmburg is one of my favorite authors! I guess I expected more depth.
Overall, I think this is a good series. I enjoyed reading it, however I found the writing quite jarring. There was a lot of
Toland felt something was off. But what was it? It was something... or was it nothing? No, there was something definitely off that Toland could feel. Or could he? He could feel something was.... off. But what was it? What could it be? Toland did not know. But something was off. Something wasn’t right. Something was very wrong. “Is it the Elementals?” “Perhaps” “What is wrong with the Elementals?” “What do you think is wrong with the elementals?” “Something feels... off” “Does it feel off?” “Can’t you feel it?” “What is it you think I can feel?” “Aren’t you connected to the bonds?” “What bonds am I connected to?” “You are connected to the elemental bonds. Is it the bonds that feel off and not the Elementals?” “Perhaps” “How can I be sure?” “How can you be sure of what?” “How can I be sure of what I feel is off?” “What do you feel is off?” “Something. I am not sure what but I know something is wrong. Can you help me?” “How can I help you?” “I need to figure out what is causing the feeling that something is off”
I loved the Cloud Warrior series and the one that came before it. The Elemental Academy took things in a different direction, but I enjoyed it for the most part. But this series so far is worse plot-wise. Things are repeated WAY too often, things don't make sense, some things completely contradict other things. The concepts of shaping, the Waste, and the Beyond either change or disregard how the were in other parts of the book. The characters are not realistic at all. They say one thing, think another thing, yet do something completely different. It just seems like the author stopped caring about this series or simply got disinterested or lazy with it.

Another HUGE deal breaker for me was when Light (the spirit elemental from the Cloud Warrior series) is all of a sudden bad?? WTF!!! Such a HORRIBLE decision to take the book in this direction. I honestly don't know how much more of this series I can handle. Here's hoping it doesn't continue sucking like this book did.
A purposeless tale of a “shaper” shaping for no apparent purpose, producing nothing really. I guess we are supposed to assume the hero is good and the villain is bad but are given no reason to think so other than they battle each other. Sort of like a Sudoku puzzle, distracting with no really purpose served.
This series and it's predecessor are both quite good but I don't leave reviews anymore since it requires that I use words and not just stars after the last update. Sorry I won't be leaving you anymore reviews author as I used to on every book but this series and the one before it are very good.
As the series continues, the cyclical logic and reuse of sense becomes tedious. Tolan repeatedly does a stilly thing, ignores is previous promises and advice and then suddenly feels an answer to the solution and somehow (convolutedly) resolves? issues. I am still curious to find out what happens but it feels more like a slog with each book
This is a continuation of the previous storyline. The author does a good job expanding the world and knowledge of the characters. I look forward to the next book.
Tolan has many challenges to face and almost loses himself. There are many things that face Tolan and his friend. Once I got into the story I had to finish And now go onto the next book.
In Tolan’s quest for understanding he fights battle after battle. With each battle comes more understanding. This last quest removed one threat and led to the discovery of another. Join me as we follow Tolan and his quests for knowledge.
This was a different read as far as this series has been. Tolan has gained more control over the elementals and the Element. Enjoyed this book but got repetitive in spots.
