Opening a small town bakery, Jill Monroe feels Lady Luck is finally smiling on her. She’s got everything she ever dreamed of, except the cowboy who won her heart. A new story has investigative reporter Lucas Boudreau stretched thin. Being home near his childhood sweetheart isn’t helping. When unwanted attention escalate to threats, can Lucas gamble with his heart and still protect the woman he’s always loved?
USA TODAY Bestselling author Kathy Ivan can’t remember a time when books and reading weren’t a part of my daily life. I was blessed with a mother who instilled the love of reading in me at a young age. That progressed into a passion for the written word in all forms, which led to my writing. Every day I have new stories and new ideas roaming through my brain, the characters chomping at the bit for their turn to be front and center and have their story told. Today that love of storytelling translates into my desire to write and share my stories with others. I write in many genres, but I’m currently concentrating on romantic suspense and paranormal.
My day job is about as uncreative as it gets. I do medical transcription, spending numerous hours at the computer each day trying to decipher the mumbled, garbled and often unrecognizable words the physicians are dictating, in an effort to make a complete and comprehensive patient record. It’s almost as bad as trying to read their handwriting!
Born and raised in Miami, Florida, I’ve lived in various places throughout my youth, from California to Hawaii and back to Florida (Key West), before finally settling in Texas. I make my home outside Dallas, Texas with my spoiled black lab (Missy).
I am a member of Romance Writers of American and the Dallas Area Romance Authors (DARA), where I’m an active member; you can find me at the local meetings each month.
That’s about it off the top of my head. I love talking with other readers and writers, so feel free to contact me.
Lucas has returned to his hometown to recover from his last investigative story, which took an emotional toll on him. There he reconnects with Jill, his childhood sweetheart. Lucas is determined to win her back, with a little help from his family.
I liked how Lucas’s family treats Jill as one of their own, helping her realize her dream of owning her own bakery. They also rally around her to protect her when she gets a visit from an unwelcome visitor and Lucas’s latest investigation hits a little too close to home. They’re a tight-knit group and I enjoyed how they never hesitate to support each other or someone one of them cares about.
With an interesting storyline and wonderful characters, I recommend giving it a read. You won’t be disappointed!
**I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy provided by the author**
Lucas is the fifth book in the Texas Boudreau Brotherhood series. Each of the books highlights a different brother in the family. MIss Patty and Douglas adopted a number of boys. The boys were brought up with a strong sense of right and wrong. Miss Patty ruled the roost like no one else!
Lucas was the only brother who never changed his name because he was still looking for his younger sister Renee. However, that is only part of the story. Lucas is an investigative reporter in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and has just finished writing a big story that really upset him. Lucas was struggling to figure out what he wanted when he realized that he had missed a big opportunity with Jill.
When Lucas returns home, he runs into his old flame Jill. His mother, Miss Patty has managed to convince Jill to open a bakery with her help and then gets her whole family to help Jill. Meanwhile, a seriously creepy dude has decided that Jill needs to be his girlfriend and is leaving gifts. Jill’s brother is struggling with a gambling addiction and she has given him her entire savings to save him from death.
What a fun book to read! I love the family boudreau and all the brothers. Miss Patty is a riot! Lucas by Kathy Ivan is a good read.
This was another wonderful story of another wonderful Broudreau brother. I'm holding out hope there will be a Broudreau brother left over for me. It is difficult to choose a favorite one. They are all so different yet each has strong ethics and are chivalrous to the core. Each brother is swoon worthy on their own. Their choices in mates are pretty spectacular too. I look forward to the next story of Heath. Thank you, Kathy Ivan, for keeping romance alive.
Lucas is the fifth book in Kathy Ivan’s The Texas Boudreau Brotherhood series. In this book we get a closer look at Jill Monroe and Lucas O’Malley, who were once high school sweethearts. Their individualized collage and life pursuits led them on separate paths. Despite their separation, Jill is still included in Boudreau family events. So, it is natural that Lucas and she frequently cross paths. Jill dreams of owning her own bakery, but these dreams are squashed when goons bring her beaten brother, Dante Monroe, to her doorstep demanding she pay off his debts. Lucas followed his dream and built a career as a renowned investigative reporter. But life in Dallas Forth Worth is not as cracked up as he thought it would be. He knows that something is missing and realizes it is Jill. Also, Lucas continues to search for his long-lost sister, Renee. Will Jill and Lucas get together? Will they find happiness? What happens with Dante? Will Jill ever see her dream come true? Will Lucas reunite with his sister? To learn the answers to these questions you must read this book.
I enjoyed the way Ms. Ivan creates her characters. They are multi-layered. I appreciate how she reveals their dreams, strengths, and vulnerabilities. She allows readers to journey along with her characters as they work out their fears and challenges. I am fascinated how Ms. Ivan includes different brothers into her plot. Doing so allows readers to get to know each of the Boudreau brothers and appreciate this tight knit family. Ms. Ivan masterfully created a two-prong character-driven plot. One prong focuses on Jill Monroe. We witness her strong sibling bond and the lengths she endures to keep her baby brother safe. The second prong focuses on Lucas. The focus on Lucas covers two paths. The first his continued search for his missing sister. The second his pursuit of his next investigative expose. Ms. Ivan brilliantly weaves these two prongs together to create this suspenseful romantic plot.
I also appreciated Ms. Ivan's use of literary devices such as point of view, dialog, backstory, and descriptive language. Through the dialog and their internal dialog readers are provided an opportunity to get to know them better, to understand their personalities and to get their backstories. I also appreciated the way Ms. Ivan differentiated between the dialog between characters and the internal dialog by offsetting the text in italics. I also thought it was interesting how she depicted text conversations between Lucas and his brothers.
I was intrigued with the way she used point of view. She shifted between third person point of view and a dual point of view approach. The third person point of view provides the backstories. In this story, particularly, we learn more about the harmful effects of additions, like gambling. The dual point of view enhances readers’ understanding of Jill and Lucas’ past histories and their dreams. In so doing this, she endears with her readers. Additionally, Ms. Ivan's use of descriptive language vivid and realistic scenes. If you want to read a suspense romance, then you should read this one. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. Happy Reading.
Overall Amanda rating: A So this book was just as well written as the first few in this series. I wish that these people in this place actually existed. I think that the storyline was very well thought out and written. I think that the characters and their development were nicely done as well. Lucas- I really love this character and I am looking forward to seeing his sister's story continue through the other books. I think that he is strong and secure and thinks that he knows what he wants. Jill- this girl has loved Lucas from childhood. Watching him, loving him, then He left her behind. I think that her forgiving him while he went to find himself was very well done. I think it is good to see that sometimes it can be the right person just not at the right time. Sometimes you have to grow separately before coming together. I am truly liking this storyline and these characters. I think it is my goal to be a mama like Patti. And yes, I would love to have a love like her and Douglas, (but it is fiction lol).
I so enjoy this series and the way that Kathy writes. Lucas is another great hit by Kathy that kept my interest until the end. As always, Lucas had a great storyline, the pace was fast, and memorable characters. I so enjoyed the family feel that Kathy seems to always have in her books. I am a huge believer in family and I just love reading about books that focus a lot on family as a center. I would highly recommend this series and honestly anything by Kathy Ivan.
A quick rundown of the book has Lucas returning home to recover, his last job took a lot out of him. While he is home, he reconnects with his old flame Jill. He may or man not use everything up his sleeve to win her back, even use his family.
They were best friends then sweethearts in high school. Lucas felt he needed the big city to find himself and his sister. Jill was broke hearted when he left. Lucas' career was at a place he could work from anywhere. He was beginning to realize the mistake he made. Hopefully it wasn't too late. Jill has always been in love with Lucas. She needed to guard her hearf. She wasn't sure she could live through a repeat. Because of her brother she was being drawn into illegal gambling that Lucas was writing a expose on. Another excellent story of a Boudreau brother . love characters love the family ,
I've worked my way through this series, and still have a ways to go, but for the love of PETE.. please get the errors/typos/etc under control. There were so many in this particular book, I lost count. Wrong names being used, spelling errors galore, sentences that made absolutely no sense... ugh I love your writing, but the amount of errors has all but made me have a stroke.
An exciting read as another Broudreau brother finds true love. Great story line that draws you in and holds you tight. Love the characters in this series so much, they have strong family bonds throughout. Enjoyable read as Lucas and Jill find their way back together.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book; all opinions expressed are my own.
This is another exciting story about the Boudreau Brothers. This time, it's Lucas' story. He's been in love with Jill most of his life, but they drifted apart. Now fate brings them back together, but someone has been harassing Jill and Luke has to get to the bottom of things. Will it bring them together, closer than ever, or will it tear them apart? Find out in this not to be put down story!
Lucas: Fantastic story! I loved Lucas and Jill. I liked that they have been friends For a long time. I loved that the Boudreau are always there for each other and would do anything to protect their own. I am glad Jill's dream are coming true in her love for baking and the man she had always loved. Fantastic writing and story telling.
Another hit out of the ball park in this series. Can't wait for #6. I must tell that I never buy books that cost over $.99 unless it's a whole series and then $2.99 is my top limit until I got the first book in this series free. I read it and then I was hooked. I will never tell my husband I bought this series at full price. LOL But every book is worth every penny it costs.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series so purchased three more. Unfortunately, I have not been as impressed with the subsequent books. The characters are still wonderful, but I have become increasingly disconnected from the writing as well as frustrated with various plot elements as well as minor proofing errors. I only read the first third of this one before skipping to the end.
Loved this sweet read.. and it wasn't just about the bakery!! The cake baking Jill and the investigative reporter Lucas do a sweet tango of desire that has just the right ingredients to frost the Cupcake!! and it's Calorie Free!!
Lucas has loved Jill for most of his life. He is horrified to learn that a gambling boss wants her for his. Worse yet the gambling boss is the brother of Rivera Escondido the owner of the Mexican drug cartel.
Well written story and well developed characters! I loved this book and all the others about the Boudreaux brothers! You don't have to, but should, read all of them in order! You won't be disappointed!
This book started out slower than the others and it took me a few chapters to get engaged. Once things started moving faster, I couldn't put the book down. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
Lucas & Jill had history. It was sad to see Jill avoid Lucas. Such a happy moment when he made his decision to go after his heart while he kept her safe from the threat. Slow but sweet as they rediscover each other. Got to love the family & support.
I can’t get enough of the Boudreau family! Lucas was no different. Lucas and Jill were amazing! I loved how sweet Lucas was towards Jill. They were definitely meant to be! I’m so glad they had each other! 💛
The book kept my interest throughout, and each evening I was eager to read more. Intrigued mixed with romance and danger is captivating. It’s a great cozy read!
The best of the series....so far! A love to stand the test of time and distance, well all good love story's should...but returning home Lucas realises that that missing something he has been chasing all this time is actually the person he left behind. His love has survived being apart this time but he knows there is no way Jill will forgive him if he leaves a second time. Can he convince Jill to trust him with her heart again? Can he keep her safe when Jill and his work collide in the worst way imaginable? I love the Boudreau's and the amazing family they have built, proving you don't need to be blood to be family. Who wouldn't want to move to Shiloh Springs and be welcomed by Ms Patti's loving arms and the very sexy brothers!
