From the USA Today bestselling author of White Out comes a story of two heroines with shattered pasts and a town with blood on its hands.
When a North Dakota couple is shot down in their home in cold blood, the sleepy town of Hagen wakes with a jolt. After all, it’s usually such a peaceful place. But Detective Kylie Milliard knows better.
Despite not handling a homicide investigation in years, Kylie is on the case. A drop of blood found at the scene at first blush promises to be her best evidence. But it ultimately only proves that someone else witnessed the murder—and the results are shocking: the DNA reveals a familial match to a crime involving local nurse Lily Baker from over a decade ago. This unveiling stirs new nightmares for Lily as she’s forced to reckon with the most traumatic time in her life.
Haunted by their pasts and hunting the killer, Kylie and Lily uncover hellish secrets and impossible truths, finding answers that put both their lives in jeopardy.

I have not read White Out, the first book in the Badlands series, but there is enough backstory in Far Gone that I was not lost.
North Darkota is usually a quiet place; however when a murder happens there, Detective Kylie Milliard jumps to action right away.
I’m going to keep this review short and sweet because this book is full of twists I can’t risk giving away.
The current crime is linked to a past crime involving a local nurse. What transpires after that revelation is just after shocking twist. If you are looking for a fresh new thriller, check out this series!
Far Gone by Danielle Girard is second in the Badlands series. I have not read the first book but found the author has done well in updating the reader with pertinent details of the previous one. The mystery starts shockingly with the brutal murders of a couple in their home in the town of Hagen in North Dakota. Each chapter is written from the point of view of three individuals. Kylie, a detective, finds herself tasked with investigating the double murders. Lily, a nurse, who’s violent past has marred her adult life, becomes embroiled in the murder investigation, through no fault of her own. Hannah, a fourteen-year-old girl is involved in the mystery as well, but in what way? The characters are multi-dimensional and well-drawn, and reading their story makes this mystery enticing and utterly difficult to put down. There are several mysteries within mysteries here and the plot is fast-moving and suspenseful. I look forward to reading other mysteries by Danielle Girard. Highly recommended. Thank you to Thomas & Mercer, NetGalley and the author for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book is packed with action and takes off with a bang and another bang! This is the second in the Badlands thriller series and White Out was just as good!
Definitely lots of fun twists in this one. AND.... even when you're approaching the ending of this one you're thinking ok... it's about to wrap up but just kidding because Girard throws another curveball ;).
A couple is murdered in North Dakota and DNA is found at the scene that links to someone that was a witness. Not just anyone but someone that has been linked to another crime from the past.
How are these crimes linked?
Who is this witness that law enforcement need to find?
I highly recommend checking this series out!!
4/5 shinning stars!
Huge thank you to Danielle Girard and the publisher for my copy.
Just devoured Danielle Girard's upcoming thriller, Far Gone. Another twisty thriller I really liked? Who am I?
14-year-old Hannah is scheduled to babysit for Ben and Nadine Garza on Friday night. She shows up to their house a bit high on oxycodone but hopes they won’t notice.
And then a man comes into the house. Hannah is able to hide in the closet and watches in horror as the man shoots both Ben and Nadine but mercifully leaves their infant daughter safe. But Hannah is afraid he’ll return, so she flees with the baby.
Detective Kylie Milliard lands the investigation into the Garza murders. When she finds blood on the scene not belonging to the victims, she knows this could be the break she needs. She is shocked, however, to find that the DNA in the blood drop is a familial match to Lily Baker, a local nurse, who was involved in a horrible crime years before.
As Kylie and her colleagues work to find the killer and Lily tries to deal with the return of traumatic memories, dark secrets are uncovered and shocking discoveries are made. Will anything be the same again?
Far Gone is the second book in Danielle Girard’s Badlands series (after White Out). I didn’t read the first book but boy, I’m hooked on Girard’s writing now. You could read this as a stand-alone because there was enough background into the past.
For someone who has been having a really tough time with thrillers lately, I thought this was great. There were lots of twists and turns, some of which I predicted and some which surprised me, but I loved the characters and the emotions the story evoked.
Suzy Approved Book Tours, NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer, and Danielle Girard provided me with a complimentary advance copy of the book in exchange for an unbiased review. Thanks for making it available!
Far Gone is book #2 in the Badlands thriller series by Danielle Girard and NO this is not a book that can be read as stand-alone. The story moves forward thru Kylie and Lily and Lily’s story takes off from the past events that are interconnected to the reveals in book #1.
White Out, the first in the series, honestly didn’t impress me much, coz the central story had to have a huge suspension of disbelief from the reader for it to work. But I loved the author’s writing style keeping the readers engaged and thankfully in Far Gone, she has worked wonders in carving a knuckle-biting and intensely tense storyline. The twists and turns gave me a whiplash trying to keep up with Kylie as she untangles the puzzle surrounding the Visser family and their daughter 14 yr old Hannah.
Detective Kylie Millard, unlike book one, takes center stage here as she struggles to race against time to get to the witness before the killer strikes again. The small-town vibe conveyed in the book is brilliant, there’s a sense of claustrophobia that adds to a subtle threat just around the corner.
Trigger warning to readers who have problems with drug abuse. It is mentioned in every other chapter that is focused on Hannah. So, for those having concerns, I would advise you to read it with caution.
I simply loved how the author has clearly demarcated the diabolical manipulative love of a mother with the no holds barred love of a father in the story. It is again evidence of the fact that a tsunami could be brewing behind a closed door and none would be the wiser.
On-your toes read!
Many thanks to Net Galley, Thomas & Mercer, and the author for a chance to read and review this book. All opinions are expressed voluntarily.
This review is published in my blog https://rainnbooks.com/, Goodreads, Amazon India, Medium.com, Facebook, and Twitter.
Far Gone is set in Hagen, a small town in North Dakota. It opens with Hannah, a 14 year old with a drug problem, going to babysit. Unfortunately, she ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. She witnesses the murder of the couple she is babysitting for while she is hiding in the closet. Hannah, scared and high, runs from the scene. The book follows three storylines throughout: the investigation of the murdered couple, Hannah’s escape and backstory, and that of Lily, a nurse who has survived a traumatic past.
The book created well thought out characters and relationships. There were several strong female characters. The three stories within the book were easy to separate, leading to no confusion while reading. Although there were gaps and a few places where the book dropped a topic too quickly, this book captivated my attention and kept me reading. The last half of the book was action packed.
I flew through the last few chapters, itching to know if I was correct in my assumption of who committed the murders and why. I switched my mind several times during the read and I always appreciate when the author gives several plausible scenarios. The three stories intersected creatively. I was pleasantly surprised with the way the author handled the ending and the wrap up of the three stories. I will be reading more from this author. Definitely recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me to opportunity to read the book in exchange for an honest review.
There were a lot of things that didn't work well for me, but they were excusable and this book would have been a 3-star read. BUT. Big but, when we got to the end and the topic of sexual assault was brought to light and the condoning of said sexual assault because the statute of limitations period had elapsed - HARD NO. Absolutely not.
The fact that no one called out this character. Shut this conversation down. Or had any sort of rebuttal is infuriating. ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME?!
That statement requires consequences if you are going to use sexual assault as a plot device - which is absolutely the case in this book. And as I reread that chapter, just to make sure I wasn't getting this wrong, it got worse. Because after the sensationalism of the WTF moment, you realize that A. a woman is forced to relive her trauma, B. she is being asked to touch her perpetrator, C. a young person finds out that they are a product of rape, and D. two characters victim blame and laugh it off. AGAIN, ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME?!?
(AND YES, this is all exposed in one 6-page chapter - my god!)
The fact the people read chapters 55 and 57 and never mentioned how problematic all of this is... is troublesome.
This is a no. A hard hard no.
More to come later.

This has been the best series by a new to me author I have read in some time. I loved Hannah and of course Lily. They will not soon be forgotten. This was a fast paced read. It was full of action and so much that you will not see coming. Just wait for the mystery towards the end, you will be shaking your head. 4.5 star and I highly recommend this one. The Mary Reader received this book from the publisher for review. A favorable review was not required and all views expressed are our own.
Far Gone is the second instalment in the Badlands Thriller series set in Hagen, North Dakota. 14-year-old Hannah Visser arrives at the home of married couple Nadine and Ben Garza to babysit their young infant daughter, Tiffany, but little do they know, Hannah is high on drugs. Nadine is an accountant at Hannah's old brother's business, Chase Visser Interiors, so they trusted her with their precious baby and she had babysat for them before and never put a foot wrong. But before the Garzas can leave, an unexpected visitor bursts through the front door startling everyone. Issuing orders such as telling them to put their hands up, Hannah is sure she recognises the man's voice but can't quite put her finger on it. She manages to back into a closet unnoticed but the Garzas aren't so lucky and she watches in absolute horror as Nadine and Ben are gunned down in cold blood killing them both instantly. Terrified and with no idea what to do, Hannah grabs Tiffany and high tails it out of the door and into the Garza family car but instead of heading to report the crime to the police, due to her impaired condition, she takes Tiffany to the hospital where her father works as a doctor. Emergency room consultant Doctor Charles Visser is shocked when Hannah decides to thrust the baby into the arms of ER nurse Lily Baker and effectively run.
Well, that may be a far more pleasant idea than what actually happened - Hannah saw Lily in the parking lot and left the child on the ground before driving away. In search of a safe space where she can pull herself together, she ventures to the remote cabin her family used to holiday at when she was younger. But the killer has overheard a conversation at the hospital between staff and now knows of Hannah's presence in the Garza's home that fateful day and of her identity and he's on a mission to tie up loose ends knowing that she could identify him as the Garza's murderer. Can Hannah manage to stay one step ahead of him until he is identified and arrested? This is a compulsive, engrossing and thoroughly assured sequel to White Out, and I couldn't fathom that this was even more scintillating than its predecessor. There's never a dull moment and it's eminently clear that Girard knows exactly how to chill her readers and provide a propulsive, pacey thriller in which the belt of tension never slackens and the suspense is palpable throughout. Told from multiple seamlessly switching perspectives, we are treated to a thriller packed with action, danger, intensity, twists, red herrings and the anxiety felt by both those chasing, and being chased by, the killer. Highly recommended.
First off, I haven't read the first book in this series and had no issues with this one. It holds up excellently as a standalone. 👍🏻 I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The writing was very good. The action was non-stop. It was full of twists and turns. The three separate storylines meshed well. The characters were well developed. And that ending...some of it I kind of guessed, but wow...SO twisted and shocking. 🙌🏻
4.5⭐! This is the second book in the Badlands Thriller. The first book is "White Out" and was also really good, which is why I was excited to start this one! I can honestly say it was even better than the first. It takes place in a small town, Haven, North Dakota. Hannah who's 14, is babysitting and witnesses the murder of the couple she's babysitting for, and then makes an escape. Detective Kylie is at the scene of the murder and finds blood. When they run the DNA they find a connection to nurse Lilly, and a crime from a decade ago. You'll read parts about Hannah and her escape, and the trauma from Lilly's past. This was a great mystery/thriller. The last few chapters really had me reading fast because I wanted to know if was right about who the murderer was. It was well written and fast paced. Lots of fun twists in this one! Loved it!
This is the second book in a series but the first I have read; it works well as a standalone. A fast paced story with richly drawn characters and vivid descriptions, I couldn’t put it down, compulsively saying to myself “just one more chapter.” It is told from different points of view, a technique that worked well. Yes, it is suspenseful, with some twists.
I usually don’t like when characters make bad choices, but Hannah, after all, is only 14 years old. There were a few too many coincidences for me, yet I still enjoyed the book.
After finishing this, I realized that I have the first one in the series on my Kindle; I just never had the chance to read it. Now, I will go back and read it as a wait the third (hopefully) one.
My thanks go out to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC!
After a drop of blood found is found at a crime scene, Detective Kylie Milliard finds she doesn't have much else to go on in order to find the murderer. Ultimately, that bit of blood not only proves that someone witnessed the murder at the scene, but there is also an unexpected familial match to a crime involving local nurse Lily Baker from over a decade ago.
There were many storylines in Far Gone but the three main ones were: The investigation into the murder of a couple whose baby has disappeared, the witness's escape and backstory, and that of a dedicated nurse who survived a traumatic past resulting in memory loss. I really enjoyed the book until the end, when everything was wrapped up in a long and rather unbelievable scene. I found myself wishing for a little more realism and a little less telling. (I know! I'm the outlier with this one!)
As with her first book in this series, this one was a gripping page turner, that kept me up well into the night reading. This fast paced thriller, has short chapters that flip back-and-forth between characters. The plot is well written, and flows very well. A definite recommend, and hope to see another book in the series. To understand this book it would do you well to read White Out as it is the first book in the series.
**Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a free e-book copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**
4.5/5
This is the second book in the Badlands series written by Danielle Girard. I saw this book on NetGalley and requested it without realising it was the second book of a series, so had a look at the first book and realised I had bought it last year but hadn't read it yet - so safe to say I was drawn to the storyline!
I really enjoyed this book and thought it followed on nicely from the first. The storyline was very easy to follow; however, I think it would have been a lot harder to do so if you hadn't read the first book - or at least you wouldn't get the whole impact of the book. I personally really liked this but I can see how this would be a negative if you hadn't read the previous book at all, or if it had been a while and you couldn't remember what had happened previously.
What I also enjoyed about this book was the fact that everything was well wrapped up and felt resolved. The story was tense and thrilling, the characters likeable (despite making some terrible decisions throughout - Hannah I'm looking at you), and the multiple points of view really added to the enjoyment of the book without being confusing in the slightest. The twists and turns were perfectly executed and the writing style of the book was very enjoyable.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to fans of thrillers and police procedurals, but I do recommend you read the first book of the series (White Out) first - which I also personally loved!
Holyyyy Moly! This book is jam packed with action. It takes off with a bang and keeps on banging 😂
Even towards the end, you’re like, “ok, the author is wrapping it up now”..... but she’s like Sike! And another scene just explodes.
This is the second book in this series, the first is WHITE OUT. I have both books, but decided to read the second book first- I just get wild like that sometimes 😂
This one was still easy to follow despite not having read the first book, but I’d probably have to recommend reading them in order. There is a lot of backstory there.
Also, I am a RN and I really enjoyed the medical aspect of the book, it’s done so well. ✨ _________________________________
A couple is murdered in a quiet town in North Dakota.
Later, DNA evidence at the scene proves that someone witnessed the murders..... The DNA links the witness to the victim of a harrowing crime from the past. How is it all related? The police have to find the witness..... Does the killer know there was a witness? 👀
This was such an exciting, heart-racing thriller! Far Gone is the second book in the series Badlands Thriller, but I think this can be read as a stand-alone.
14-year-old Hannah witnesses the murder of the couple she is babysitting for. Detective Kylie is assigned the case, and she finds a connection to an old case. We alternate between three storylines, Detective Kylie’s investigation, Hannah’s experiences, and the old case that the new one is connected to.
I thought this was a great story with characters that were easy to connect to, and a plot that was surprising and exciting! I was worried when we started jumping between the three storylines, but it is written in a way that makes it easy to understand and follow. The twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat, and I think readers are going to love it!
I was provided a gifted copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
Far Gone is the second installment in the Badlands thriller & this book & series is very different to every book I've read - in a good way! The book opens with a super creepy chapter that reeled me right in. I could feel my heart race with every page turn with this book. The book just kept getting more thrilling up until 75%. The book kind of gives away strong clues about the killer so it wasn't difficult for me to figure out who did it. But that took me some time. Time I enjoyed a lot. But figuring out the why & how was important to me so the pages kept turning! The fact that the book is based in a small sleepy town somehow creeps me more. The characters were amazing & plot was exciting, highly twisted & compelling. I'm happy I picked this series! Cant wait for the next one!
Thank you NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer and Danielle Girard for an arc!
I received a gifted copy of FAR GONE from the author Danielle Girard through Netgalley.
FAR GONE is book two in the author’s Badlands Thrillers series. It begins with a young girl named Hannah showing up for a babysitting job only to witness the brutal shooting of the parents who hired her, unseen by the killer. Detective Kylie Milliard gets the 911 call, but Hannah is no longer on scene. While on shift as a nurse at the hospital where Hannah’s dad works, Lily finds herself wrapped into the aftermath of the shooting.
I enjoyed Danielle Girard’s WHITE OUT last year so I was excited to read the second installment in the series. I have to say that I loved this one even more! This book jumps right into the action with Hannah watching a double murder occurring right in front of her, fearing for her own life. The reader is kept in suspense right along with her wondering if and how she’ll escape this situation. This book does not shy away from the gore and the gun violence, so do keep this in mind.
Hannah was an interesting character and one prone to making some bad choices, starting with showing up to baby sit high. Still, she’s a 14-year old kid dealing with family issues at home and thrust into an impossible decision. Between the drugs in her system and the trauma she’s experienced, she makes some bad decisions trying to run away and hide, but she kept me hooked needing her to make it to safety.
We are getting the perspectives of Kylie and Lily who both return from book one in addition to Hannah. Knowing the details of book one and their background certainly helped, but this book would work as a stand alone as well.
This one kept up a quick pace and had some twists I didn’t predict. FAR GONE is out on 6/15/2021 and I would recommend it to the thriller fans!
From the USA Today, bestselling author of White Out comes a story of two heroines with shattered pasts and a town with blood on its hands.
This thriller is the second in the Badlands series. In North Dakota, where Detective Kylie Milliard in their peaceful little town. Only she knows it’s not what it looks like.
Kylie hasn’t worked homicide in a long time, but when a couple is shot in their own home, with baby sleeping yards away, she’s back in business.
She has two bodies, but no baby. Just a smear of blood on the basket where the baby should be. So either the killer took the baby, or someone else was in the house.
The DNA on the blood smear is shocking. It’s not a killer's blood. It’s not the baby’s blood. But it is a familial march to a crime that involved a local nurse at the hospital, Lily. Ten years ago she was held captive for over a year. Raped and traumatized. Part of her brain has blocked a lot of that time for her own sanity. But things are about to get dangerous for the detective and the nurse.
As for the poor girl on the run from a killer who knows she was there, Hannah, is one of the bravest characters I’ve seen. And Lily. That poor woman had the backbone of steel.
Everyone in this story had secrets. Some harmless and embarrassing, and some downright murderous. Everyone wants to know the truth, but there are some people determined to not let that happen.
This author is always on her game. I’m pretty sure I bit a fingernail off reading this one. Which I count as a really good tale!
Wow. So many gasp out loud no way thrills. Hannah arrives at Nadine and Ben's house ready to babysit their infant daughter. As they are about to leave, a man kills them. Hannah hovers in the closet, struggling to stay quiet while the drugs in her system swirl in her blood. Lily was abducted as a teenager - years later, those memories are returning. Hazy and dreamlike, Lily is just trying to cope. Her partner, Iver, is away caring for his mom. On her own, Lily struggles to manage her emotions as well working as an ER nurse. Kylie arrives on scene - shocked by the gruesome scene. Who would kill such an unlikely target? Where is the baby? Where is Hannah? Told in multiple narratives, the story moves quickly with many surprises. I am a huge gan of this author - this book just reinforces.
Danielle Girard does it again!! FAR GONE is the second book in her Badlands Thrillers series, following White Out which was released last summer.
Let me tell you why you don't want to miss FAR GONE: -you don't have to read WHITE OUT to follow along in FAR GONE -fast paced with lots of action -holy twists!! I thought that was it about 70 pages before it was over but NOPE! -something about a creepy small town setting just sucks me right in
Highly recommend the Badlands Series - this one is out June 15!
Hannah Visser is a young teenager who has just arrived to babysit an infant when she is witness to the parents being shot by a lone gunman. Out of sight at the time of the killer’s entrance, she takes refuge in a closet, where she sees the killer approach the baby’s bassinet, before saying something and leaving. Terrified, and high on pills she’s just obtained from a dealer, she thinks she recognizes the voice of the shooter – she’s heard it before, but here? Fearful for the infant’s life and her own, she grabs the baby, the homeowner’s purse and keys, and heads to safety, wherever she can find it.
Kylie Milliard is the lone Detective on the Hagen, NC police force, and chances to answer the 911 call that comes in from a breathless female reporting the murder. As she and fellow officers’ race to the address, dreading the scene that lies ahead, Kylie realizes she never got the name of the caller, nor her role in the discovery of the bodies. Upon reaching the scene, they find the female victim clinging to life, and they also quickly realize the couple’s infant daughter is missing. When Kylie notices a smear of blood on the bassinet, she’s hopeful for a suspect, but the DNA result just creates more questions.
Lily Baker is the nurse working in the small ER clinic that night, along with Dr. Visser, Hannah’s father. It’s a busy evening, made even more so by the arrival of the shooting victim, who dies shortly after arrival despite their best efforts. Lily is still recovering emotionally from a years old ordeal of being held captive for several months, with only scattered memories of the event. As she steps outside to take a 10-minute break, she notices a car in the lot with a woman inside – the woman then lays a bundle on the asphalt and asks Lily to care for it – it’s a baby.
As Hannah struggles to find safety, Kylie investigates an ever confusing and heartbreaking case, with an unexpected and painful connection to Lily. Told from the perspectives of these three women, this book is guaranteed to hook you from the first page and will keep you up well into the night. It wasn’t until I completed this book that I learned it’s actually the 2nd in a series which goes into much greater detail regarding Lily & Kylies respective pasts, so you can bet I’ll be reading that novel next! I’m a big fan of Ms. Girard’s ‘Dr. Schwartzman’ series, and I’ll be adding this series to my must read list as well! Great read!!

*I received an ARC of this book from netgalley in exchange for an honest review*
This book is so good I almost don't have words to describe it. Far Gone is exactly what all excellent thrillers should be. The only reason I read it in two sittings instead if one was that I started far too close to bedtime (and I struggled through, keeping my eyes open as long as I could).
From the start the pacing is excellent - Girard manages to make every moment matter in a way that creates the intensity you expect from a good thriller (which is magnificently sustained throughout), while also creating an incredible attachment to the characters you're following. This is something I have rarely found in this genre - often you either get slow and heavy-handed character development to forge reader attachment, or you get a fast pace and intense plot that doesn't really promote a strong connection with the cast of the narrative.
The story follows three threads - Hannah, a fourteen year old who was babysitting at the house where the initial crime occured; Lily, a nurse on staff the night one of the vicitms is brought in to try and save; and Kylie, the detective on the case. Each of these women are written as multi-faceted people who have experienced a range of incredibly difficult things - and who navigate these things in a very believable way. Thrillers always bring up issues that in all fiction genres are often used as a womens One and Only Trauma (typically assault or childnessness - in this instance sexual assault) and often it's not incorporated well. That's not the case here at all and I honestly appreciate the heck out of it - I also love that when the focus is on Hannah she is believably written as a 14 year old. It's just (quite sadly) so damn refreshing to read women of all ages written realistically.
Far Gone is the second in it's series, but you don't need to have read the first in order to enjoy it. I didn't even realise there was a first in the series until I'd finished and had assumed that all the backstory given was just that, backstory. I'm looking forward to reading the first book, and given the events of this installment suspect I might enjoy the first more knowing how the second comes together. I'll also be keenly reading Girard's entire body of work.
Set for publication on 6th July 2021, I honestly advise all thriller lovers to get their hands on a copy.
Well, Danielle Girard was done it again. Just when you think it couldn’t get any better than the first book in this series (White Out) Danielle outdoes herself with the follow up FAR GONE publishing 6/15 by Thomas & Mercer @amazonpublishing.
Let’s start with saying this is the second book in the Badlands Thriller series, and although it can be read as a stand alone, it reads so much better if you start with the first book. Now don’t feel pressured to HAVE to read the first one, because this book is downright phenomenal on its own.
This one immediately starts out with a wollop, and you’ll be absolutely engrossed from the start. Kylie Milliard is back and she’s a brilliant detective with some of the best critical thinking skills I’ve read in a thriller. The story is so fast paced and the characters are extremely well developed. Told from three different perspectives, the writing is easy to follow and I guarantee you will read this thriller in one sitting. Let’s not forget the chapters are short, and we all know how much as readers short chapters are always the best. With tons of twists and turns that you don’t even see coming and then a huge mindboggling mystery at the end, this is one I guarantee you won’t want to miss. Even those of you who aren’t thriller lovers will enjoy this read.
@DanielleGirardbooks is going to be a force to be reckoned with and if she keeps writing like this, I anticipate her soon becoming a household name.
Far Gone is the second book in the Badlands series and it starts out with a bang. Set in small town Hagen, North Dakota, 14-year-old Hannah witnesses a brutal murder that sets off a chain reaction exposing deceit, treachery, and long hidden secrets of crimes gone by.
This brings us to Detective Kylie Milliard, the only detective in Hagen; I love to watch Kylie work a case and see her creative mind put together the clues using both science and intuition. I was happy to see a lot of the characters from the first in the series, White Out, and their growth – and drama – in Far Gone.
The plot is quickly paced and easy to race through. There’s never a dull moment and the characters are interesting and well developed. Told from the POV of Kylie, Hannah, and Lily, I got a different perspective from all three women that are central to the story, each with their own grief and trauma to cope with. The twists are twisty and the reveals beautifully done!
I’d highly recommend this series to any fan of the genre. I’d also like to point out that this can be read as a stand-alone but I think reading the first book in the series is important to get an understanding of Kylie and Lily’s past history along with some of the secondary characters.
So very glad I was able to read the upcoming Far Gone by Danielle Girard. Like a Girard book I read last year, White Out, this was another piece of spine tingling suspense, with relatable, real-life characters. I hate the term, "suspend belief If you have to suspend belief to enjoy a piece of fiction, I think you've lost the meaning. This wasn't such a book. Although it was a series of awful traumatic events that you could find in the morning news, it was a well put together piece of work.
I was happy to see Det. Kylie Milliard back for an encore appearance blending "old-fashioned" gumshoe policing with new tech to solve a current and a very cold, fourteen year old case. All the characters had an essence of grit, guts, empathy and emotions you couldn't ignore or brush off. Especially, Hannah, a teenager with several bags to carry; a cold mother, separated father, drug addiction and witness to a crime. Hannah perseveres and comes away remarkably intact. Ahh, the resilience of youth!
Another great offering by DG. Thank you #NetGalley and Thomas Mercer.
I went in to this one a bit hesitant. I didn't love book 1 for personal reasons so I was hoping I'd like this one more.
And I did!
I found myself compelled to keep reading. I was drawn to Hannah's plight - caught in the midst of a double murder as the only witness (and she doesn't know who to trust). I also really liked Lily. I had to check my first review to see who she was from book 1, but I quickly remembered and it was good to see her POV again.
Kylie was my struggle in the first book and I liked her much more in this one. I still feel like she made some obvious mistakes but I didn't fully blame her for many of them. I thought she was less gruff and more realistic person this time.
All in all, I liked the mystery if the conclusion felt a little. . . small town. I did like the draw to know what was going to happen next and I'm glad I made it to the end.
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
