Born and raised near Boston, MA, Nancy wrote her first romance novel at age 16, when she realized that fictional boyfriends were much easier to figure out than real ones. In the time since, she managed to earn her B.A. in English from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, obtain a graduate certificate in creative writing from the University of Cambridge, and marry the man of her dreams (but she still holds tight to her fictional boyfriends).

Nancy adores all things misty, caffeinated, chocolate, and grammatically correct. Currently living in northern Virginia, she spends her time reading, writing, raising her children, and watching too many Hallmark Channel movies.

This was a fun book. I am kind of partial to time travel romances. I guess I like the idea of imagining what it would be like to suddenly be thrust into an entirely unknown situation and trying to figure out what to do. I was really in the mood to read a time travel romance so I decided to pick up this book and I am glad that I did.

This is the third book in the Mists of Fate series and it read just fine as a stand alone even though I think I would have liked it a bit more if I had been more familiar with some of the characters. I definitely want to go back and read the first two books in this series so that I can see how things worked out for the other couples.

This book features Colin and Eleanor, or Ellie, and starts out in the modern time period. Colin runs a matchmaking business, Celtic Connections, and Ellie's aunt wants Colin to personally find her a match. Ellie and Colin have already met and the chemistry between them was intense right from the start. I had a lot of fun watching this pair together. Colin tried to suppress his feelings and Ellie went on the dates that were set up for her but they always seemed to come alive when they were with each other.

It did take this book a long time to get to any time traveling. It was fun once it happened and a lot of exciting things occurred while they were in the past. This was definitely what I would call a sweet romance. If you are looking for a romance with a lot of heat, this one may not be the right choice because kissing is about as steamy as this one will get. I enjoy this kind of sweet romance that really makes you see the main characters get their happily ever after.

I would recommend this book to fans of time travel romance. This was really a heartwarming romance that had a lot going for it. This is the first book by Nancy Scanlon that I have read but I definitely hope to read more of her work in the near future.

I received an advance reader edition of this book from Diversion Books via NetGalley.

Review For: 'Once Upon a Summer Night ' by Nancy Scanlon 'Once Upon a Summer Night ' by Nancy Scanlon is book Three in the "Mists of Fate" series. This is the story of Colin O'Rourke and Eleanor Carberry. This can easily be a standalone book. Colin is owner of a American Matchmaking company. But more than that he is fated time traveling protectors for his family line. Colin also knows there is a mate out there for him but he has yet to meet her. When a story is printed that his Matchmaking company is only for the privileged and says other bad publicity comments, they ask for the story to be retracted. The writer who has a single niece says she will do so if they prove how successful they can match her niece. Colin goes to London to meet this niece to fix her up so that he can have his company's good name back. But on the first night he meets 'Rose' who Colin believes to be his mate. Eleanor is doing her Aunt a favor when she agrees to the matchmaking task. But Eleanor has been hurt before by someone and that has been mainly the reason she is single. But when she surprising meets Colin she gives him her name as Rose. Eleanor doesn't know who he is nor does Colin know who 'Rose' is. Enjoyed this story and how things unfolded. This just might be my favourite book out of the series so far! It had some minor faults but nothing worth going in to in detail. I especially enjoyed the two characters the story was focused on this time around, they’re probably my favourite couple yet. This series is definitely predictable but I’m quite enjoying it nonetheless!

Colin O'Rourke is one of the fated time traveling protectors, he was born to be one and will die as a protector. Colin has always known that there is only one woman fated to be his true mate. But has mixed feelings knowing the kind of life he has to live and that she would have to live as well. But he also understands the dangers of denying or refusing what is meant to be. Colin is also running a high end matchmaking business. But when there is slander and gossip surrounding the company, Colin will have to take a risk. The columnist behind the gossip is against Colin spreading the company from the States to Ireland and the rest of the UK. In return for her shutting down the negative commentary about his company, he will need to match make her great niece. But when he realizes that she is his mate, he will have to decide if she is worth the risk...
The Hero
Colin O'Rourke has made his share of mistakes especially when it came to spiting the fates and their will. He had to bear his punishment if he wanted to live. Now that he has succeeded, he also knows the consequences of not heeding their call. He is determined to make sure that no one is hurt because of his actions. Colin was born a protector of the family line of time travelers, and it is a life bound duty. Colin sticks with women that want no strings attached. He wants to be free and not burden another woman with his burden. But when he meets Ellie, he knows that she is his mate but refuses to claim her. He knows that the life he could give her would be hard to bear, being the mate of a time traveler protector is difficult and challenging and he wants more for Ellie than what he has to offer. I did like Colin quite a bit, but his stubbornness and the way he kept rejecting Ellie was painful and even though I understood some of his reasons, I didn't get why he kept trying to hurt her even though it wasn't intentional.
The Heroine
Ellie has always felt clumsy and awkward, and has never quite fit in. She feels at home with her books and a good cup of tea. She has paved her way into the making of a bookstore and loves sharing books with others. But it can also be very lonely. She was burned when a man that was titled, ruined her reputation through scandal and she hid away for years from it. But when her aunt convinces her to try out this match making service, she agrees if only to make her aunt (her only living relative and family) happy. But from the moment she meets Colin, she feels a chemistry and a connection she never imagined. I truly adore Ellie, she is so easy to relate with. She loves books and doesn't fit in as easily with others and she was such a strong yet sweet character that had so many endearing qualities. She fights for Colin when she realizes how powerful what they have is.
I don't understand your fear. I know your heart, Colin, because it's a part of mine! I accept who and what you are.
I truly admired her passion and zest and determination to not back down.
Plot and Story Line
Once Upon A Summer Night was a delectable read and once again I fell in love with this talent, this wonderful author keeps captivating me with her stories and I stayed up all night reading this one. I just didn't want to put it down and Nancy Scanlon writes enchanting time travel romances and she keeps making me fall in love with her characters and the adventures they have. Now this book has two settings....the first part of the story begins in the modern era. Colin has traveled to Ireland to set up his office for the extension of his business and this is where Colin and Ellie meet. Now at first, they don't know each other and have no idea of what will bring them together but they share a unique moment that sets the stage for their story.
She wanted this complicated, amazing, beautiful man to trust her. Want her. Love her
Then we see them working together, which was quite fun. Colin is determined to set her up with the perfect man even if he knows she is his mate but chooses not to try to court or date her at all because of some inner demons he struggles with. But then Ellie and her friend get lost in the woods, and find themselves traveled back 500 years in Ireland. Where they meet up with some of Colin's family, The family of our first couple which was so exciting to see their children and most especially their one daughter who I have a feeling will be a heroine in a future book in the series (I hope). Colin goes back in time after her, and some pivotal moments occur that deepen the relationship that is between Colin and Ellie. But also some painful moments happen as well. But I felt like this changed the relationship---for the better.
You're not just my soul mate, Eleanor Carberry. You're the other half of my heart.
It forces Colin to face his inner demons and realize what he would be giving up if he gives up Ellie. A truly heart warming romance that gives you a breath of fresh air. Not one to miss out on especially if you love time traveling romances or are intrigued by it!!
The Cover
I really love the summer feel to this book, with the soft yet golden colors and I do like the colors of his attire---its not a kilt, I can't remember what the Irish called it back then but quite yummy looking on this model. And doesn't the backdrop make you want to take a plane to Ireland right now?? I know I do.
Overall View
Once Upon A Summer Night is an enchanting love tale of adventures through time, discovering love and also fighting to keep to....the endearing characters that worm their way into your heart and a powerfully written story that keeps the reader enthralled!! MEMORABLE!

This still is NOT Reilly's story!!! Ms. Scanlon, what are you waiting for??? ;)

This is Colin's story and is actually a PG-7 one. LOL

You'll not believe me, but there's just 2 kisses!!! O_O

Beside the lack of hot action, this is actually a very nice book about time travel. :)

The action in this book is mostly in present time and revolves around Colin's matchmaking enterprise Celtic Connection where the heroine is (almost) forced by her aunt to find the perfect man. At the same time Colin is blackmailed by the same aunt to be her matchmaker.

Ellie is clumsy, shy and very bad with meeting people, but at the same time she's intelligent and very attracted to colin since the beginning.

Colin is the usual idiot, like all the heroes in this series. He knows from the start that Ellie is his soul mate (yes, there's that trope here), but he also knows that he'll only make her miserable if he claims her. You know, the usual idiocy... O_o

So, you already know how will it go and how will end, but still this was a nice and enjoyable book. Nothing over the top, but nice all the same!

Just when I was beginning to enjoy this one, Collin happens and makes this book my least favorite in the series. The first in the series “The Winter Laird” (Nick & Bri) is by far my favorite and I am hoping against hope that my most anticipated read, (Reilly & Gwen’s story) is better than the last 2 books.

I liked Collin initially. He was laid back, charming and I loved his loyalty to his family. Ellie was a bit clumsy and shy but she was the sweetest thing.

Being a Protector had been Collin’s destiny since birth. It is a heavy burden to bear and it’s not the life he wants his mate to be subjected to. He thinks his mate would never be truly happy with him so he is hell bent on helping her find someone he believes can make her truly happy. While I could understood some of Collin’s reasons for his actions, I thought he was extremely stubborn. He repeatedly rejected Ellie and it was so painful to watch/read. It broke my heart seeing Ellie’s heart get crushed over and over and over again.

Ellie was resilient though and although he went above and beyond to pushed her away, she knew that they had a deeper connection that was worth fighting for. And boy did she put up a fight. Though I admired her persistence, I think she forgave Collin way too easily. She deserved so much better than him and in the end I found Reginald to be more worthy of her than Collin. Which is just disappointing.

I loved seeing the older characters like Nick, James, Bri, even her kids all grown up, but I mostly enjoyed seeing Reilly & Gwen and how they interacted with everyone especially with each other. These characters are the only reason I gave this book 2 stars.

a wonderful mix of staid modernism and fanciful notions

I would like to thank Nancy Scanlon, Diversion Books, and NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Colin O’Rourke aims to expand his matchmaking business to the UK, but Miss Winifred Emsworth, a popular gossip columnist, is not a fan. She holds a lot of sway with the public, and Colin needs her endorsement to be successful. He asks what he can do to convince her his company is as great as he purports—and she gives him an ultimatum: find her niece a suitable love match, or his new branch is DOA.

Because the Fates have something against him, he discovers Emsworth’s niece, Miss Ellie Carberry, is the same woman he’d met in his cousin’s garden a few days prior—the same woman he’d known, instantly, to be his soul mate. But Colin didn’t meet Emsworth’s list of requirements, nor was he prime happily-ever-after material. He was going to have to weather the pain of marrying off the woman he loves—the only woman he ever would—and make peace with a lonely future, for the good of his company—and the good of Ellie.
_____

I seriously enjoyed this book! I couldn’t stop reading it. Had it done inside nine hours or something. I have a favorite line: “Rainbows will sprout wherever you walk, and unicorns will prance under them in joy.” Delivered in wry humor, of course.

But in retrospect, I do have some problems with the story.

First, I’m a little disappointed in the Celtic Connections matchmaking company. It was said that the company “deals with life partners.” I can get behind that 100 percent. But then Colin goes on to say that “[m]arriages are the end goal.” As someone who admires commitment but isn’t interested in marriage, I find that unfortunate. Also, I never gleaned any sort of indication that the company matches any orientations besides hetero. In this day and age, I thought that restriction unfortunate as well. Of course, I could be wrong on both counts, and the author simply didn’t think it necessary to specify.

Second, this book can be read as a stand-alone. Everything that needs to be explained for the sake of the plot is explained. BUT I did feel that I was seeing a small piece of a much larger picture. Or as if I had walked in at the end of a long conversation and only heard the last bit. Since this is the third book in the series, obviously there’s a story behind the characters of Brianagh and Nick and Emma and Aiden—which I have already purchased and plan to read—but I was absolutely fascinated by Reilly and this time traveling business. He was a complete mystery, and I want soooo badly to know what his story is. So badly that it almost distracted me from Colin and Ellie.

Colin was thoroughly a martyr and took choices away from Ellie before she even knew she could make them—not only that, but he teased her with them, dangling them in front of her face before tearing them out of her grasp—which very nearly irritated me to the point of disliking him…but I could see where he was coming from, and he was so kind and smart otherwise, I let him get away with his pity parties. He was one of those heroes who was so selfless that he was, in fact, being quite selfish. Some might call him an asshole, actually. But he realized the error of his ways and all was well.

Ellie was a darling. I related to her very much, as I, too, am a clumsy, timid bookworm. But I did have a couple issues with her. While I adored her overall, her character arc prodded a sore spot with me. She had a bad experience when she was young—a public one—and in defense, she retreated into “invisibility,” spending all her days working in her bookshop and, as I understood it, most of her nights at home with a book. When Colin comes into her life and toys with her heart, she realizes she’s been hiding and needs to get out and experience life. It’s also implied that, with this realization and in light of her recent adventure, her love of books has faded? There’s nothing wrong with that, per se (though if I were her, I’d have called it a nightmare, not an adventure, and would be very eager to return to my books). I understand the philosophy and respect its merits, but I also don’t think she should be ashamed of living a quiet, book-filled life if that was what she wanted. Only arrogant extroverts would say readers are hiding from life. I think you should do whatever makes you happy, and if you feel you’ve lived a full life, then you have.

The second issue pertains to her past trauma. It’s talked about just once, at the beginning, and I kept waiting for it to come up between Colin and Ellie, but it never did. And now that I think on it, Colin’s issues and misgivings with life take the stage while Ellie’s wait in the wings. While she, herself, cerebrates on it, no one else ever asks her why she’s so resistant to dating and marriage. They just assume she’s antisocial and timid, and they take her for a one-dimensional creature. Gwen might have discussed Ellie’s past briefly, because she would have known about it, but if she did, I don’t remember the passage. If they weren’t going to do anything with the miscarriage (which isn’t really a spoiler, because it had little significance, as I’m explaining), they should have omitted that bit.

And that leads to my final complaint—the ending seemed rather abrupt. While it was satisfying in the moment, I feel there was more that needed to be said between Colin and Ellie before I could sign off on their happily-ever-after. I guess I have to assume there was full disclosure and they worked it out.

Other than that, I might have noticed a typo or two, but I was so enthralled with the story that I don’t even remember what they were. The writing style was smooth, intelligent, and uncomplicated.

Lastly, I have to commend the fact that this book contained no sex scenes whatsoever, not even almost-sex, yet it was very sexy. What’s more—I didn’t even want a sex scene! Actually, I was so wrapped up in the story that it didn’t occur to me until the end that there hadn’t been any sex. And I was okay with it. The story didn’t need it. That’s not an easy feat for a romance.

Once Upon a Summer Night by Nancy Scanlon
Mists of Fate #3

Colin O’Rourke is a time traveler. He is also wants to expand his matchmaking business to Europe. With a gossip journalist blackmailing him with bad press if he does not find her niece the “perfect match” he sets out to do just that only to find that perhaps HE is the match to be found. With his job as a family protector weighing heavy on his shoulders he finds himself in conflict trying to figure out whether or not to follow his heart or meet his family obligation…is it possible to do both? There is some time travel, some romance, some violence and some characters from previous books make an appearance while others appear that may show up in future books of the series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Diversion Books for the ARC – this is my honest review.

Disappointed about the ending. Too abrupt as if the author was near her deadline and decided to just come up with a last minute ending idea. No epilogue to make up for it. Hate how indecisive the hero is. He rejects the heroine multiple times due to some things that are out of his control and then after a pep talk fr his mom ( which was not that great imo), he decided that he can be with the heroine. Hello, what happened to all the various reasons you cannot be together in the first place? I did not see you find some ways to overcome them so why the change of heart?? The author should have at least make up some plausible reason for the hero to have come crawling back!
The heroine is a door mat! She was rejected a few times alr and her heart was supposedly broken after each of those times and still take him back at the end without at least making him work for it 🙄
Overall disappointed. And Colin had shown so much promise from the previous books.
P.s Why is there barely any mention of his love for Doc Martens in this book?? The author had not failed to mention it in the previous two books and now when he get his own book, it was thrown out the window? 😕

I Love This Series

And no, I’m not a “romance” reader (too many repetitious soft porn scenes to skim over which you will NOT find in these books), or a friend of the author (regretfully), or a reviewer who got a free book...well wait, maybe I DID sort of get a free book because I got this on Kindle Unlimited when the first of this series came as a suggestion. Anyway, I Love this series and am binging it during this pandemic.

Other people will summarize the book so I’m not going to. Instead, what makes this series meaningful to me is the feeling of reality the characters create through their dialogue. We all know or have dated a man who won’t commit, extroverts intermingle with introverts all the time sometimes not getting each other and other times complimenting each other. Many of us know the girl who at first glance seems mousy and before you know it she is developing into an amazing woman who demands to be taken seriously. The characters and situations feel very real which in reviewer speak means it’s a well written book.

I love the way the author plunks Gwen and Ellie into the late 15th century, I got some good laughs with how they thought they were on a movie set. The time travel is creatively done using the fates and Reilly. The descriptions (and ongoing education) of life in Medieval times seems well researched and historically accurate which I enjoy tremendously.

On a personal level, this series touches me emotionally. When each book ends I feel a sense of loss and sadness. I have to keep reminding myself that this is fictional fantasy and men like this aren’t real because, omg, how amazing would it be to have a man love me for exactly who I am and treat me with so much attention the way these men love, nurture (yep, nurture) and protect their women. When a writer can touch a reader’s emotions that way, it exhibits the power and skill of the writer..so kudos to Ms Scanlon.

After three books read, the one thing I would like to say directly to the author is that all the women are flawlessly beautiful, the men are beyond flawlessly strong and beautiful and everyone is rich or almost rich with an inheritance in the future, (ok, Emmaline lost everything one day and was dirt poor but then the mega rich Aiden rescued her on the same day) so imho, that amount of physical and financial perfection doesn’t feel as authentic the way the historical parts of the books do. I’m not removing a star because of it since these are captivating stories that brought tears and laughter now and then plus I’m aware that being rich is many people’s fantasy so...but even the characters yearn for a more down to earth existence, well except for that personal jet and Les, hahaha..everyone loves that!

May I offer a book suggestion? As an “older” reader, perhaps you might consider having the “older” O’Reilly matriarch (Colin and James’ mom) become a widow and find another love in the Medieval world where she can be with her beloved Bri and her children? It’s very hard to find love stories where the main character is an older woman though there are 13 urban magic type writers who have recently done just that with much success.

Awesome Read

Oh my goodness! The series keeps getting better and better! I love the characters and the use of them in all the books written so far. Once again the interactions between them and the comraderie along with the love felt is wonderful! I am liking the series and the author more and more! Please keep them coming. I hope all of the characters get their forever after and their soul mates. I found this author on a fluke looking for time travel romance. I am impressed with the writers use of not using sex scenes. Yet still getting the point across within the characters in the book that I am reading. Thank you and keep em coming!! I know that the first three books were free on kindle and the last will cost some money. I am going to purchase. I can't wait to read the next book in this series! :)

Loved Ellie! So relatable as a fellow bookworm/introvert. Colin needed a good smack on the head, but, alas, their story did not disappoint! Their humble beginnings around a fire with a beer, and every intense moment thereafter were riveting- I could not put this one down for a moment! So many twists, turns, and special moments , I’m going to have to go back to all of these because surely I read them too quickly. I’ll say it again- the steamy 🔥 level of these is unique - she does an incredible job of heating up the scene without getting graphic, by the time she presents the kiss, the reader can imagine every emotional and physical sensation the character is experiencing. I love the characters and family built up to this point, they are special and will stick with me for a long time. This is the book where some revelations are made regarding the bigger picture. Can’t wait to see what’s next for this amazing story!

Summer Night

What did I like about this book: The fact that Colin was ignoring what everyone else saw was qiute comical and realistic for me. He had to separate personal and business, and then try to take himself out of the equation completly. As much as you want to be able to do that, sometimes it is impossible. Especially if the person is your soulmate, or kindred spirit in my case. I saw how things can be. I saw how people are able to read others like Reg did, and knew he was not the one she loved. Though she wanted to learn to love him, and knew he was a good man,it would not have been possible. They both deserve more and better than that. It was almost the only way that Emma could learn and understand what Colin's life was like, she had to live it. She was not the type to have it explained and expect her to accept it. She had to be shown.

Dumb, inexplicable reason the couple is kept apart

This is my least favorite of this series. It was OK, but the reason Colin does not pursue Ellie was totally dumb, unbelievable and got really old after a while. It was not very flushed out and it didn’t make sense why he was keeping them apart. Then when there’s resolution in their relationship it ends sooo abruptly that all kinds of plot points are left unresolved.

I couldn’t stand the Aunt either. If she was so concerned for her niece why bring so much attention to her in the press? I wanted Ellie to tell her off, but nope. Also her demands and article review wasn’t resolved at all which is the premise the book is based on.

Wonderful new author for me!

I have just finished this 3rd book in the series & have loved it as much as the other two. In fact, I had to buy the 4th one & it's waiting for me. The plots are interesting - with historical attention to detail. The characters are well developed, believable, entertaining, & sometimes tug at your heartstrings with the difficult situations the Fates put them in. The emotional attractions are handled with restraint - intense feelings, obviously physically attracted, but not smutty. If you like time travel stories, treat yourself!

modern and medieval

How about a good looking Australian cowboy, or Southern belle who wanders through a wormhole to Medieval faire? it was nice job on the cute meeting and the passing through time woods. having others slide through following travelers is a good idea., especially the villains. Bring wee Aiden forward. I enjoyed the faire, but he could have bought her something nice. at what age and how do the chosen protectors stop aging?

Great reads

It reads well. The character gets and story line are well developed. A beautiful story. You know how to write about love and sell your stories unlike other author who rely on over!y descriptive sex scenes. Yes sex sells but anyone can describe it. I enjoy an author that can tell a real story. Just like real life sex does not necessarily mean love...its just sex.. An act. Your stories are about love, which is far more meaningful. Thank you.

Once Upon a Summer Night Book3

When Colin kissed Ellie one summer night he knew it was his soul mate. Ellie fell in love with Colin but Colin is a protector and travels to the past often. Colin tried to stay away thinking he wouldn’t be good for her. I remember author Nancy Scanlon having Colin’s mother having a talk with Colin about caring for a plant and Colin decided to go for Ellie after all.

Another exciting instalment!

I've enjoyed reading the Mists of Fate series this week. Nothing like imbibing books while on holiday. 😉

I enjoyed Colin's story. Loved him in the previous books and still loved him despite his pigheadedness. Ellie was wonderful, sweet, brave. I'm glad she never gave up on herself.

I also loved catching up with Nioclas and Bri, Aidan and Emma, Reilly, James and his parents... and meeting Gwen. So pumped for the next book!

What’s the question, what’s the answer?

If something hurts so bad can it be real? Keep this in mind while read the third book in this series. It’s the question that presents itself over and over. Not only is it a beautifully written story, but one that made me see things in a different light.

Once Upon A Summer Night (Mists of Fate book 3)--Colin O'Rourke and Ellie Garber. Another story that I found myself sucked into. This one i can relate to Ellie, as I am an introvert too. Would love to meet my Colin!! The storyline is rich with great characters and emotions. I love the long distance family relationship in this story.

Once Upon A Summer Night-Book 3 of Mists of Travel series

Once again, I loved and enjoyed this book in the series with its twists and turns, ups and downs, and the plethora of emotions that go with each. Just finished the 3rd book and immediately starting the 4th and last one. I can’t wait to read it but will be so sad and disappointed when done.❤️📚💚

Good read

Though I love reading & love the time travelling series, for some odd reason I found this particular couple not as interesting as the previous ones, although why I cannot rightfully say!? Anyhow I look forward to reading a different & more dynamic couple while they time travel!

Fun Story With A Happy Ending

I guess right now I’m into romance with a mix of time travel. This filled the bill and as the third in the series I am thoroughly enjoying the easy reading with a twist. The medieval parts add to the mix nicely. I would recommend and I’m on to book four.

Love, again

Nancy Scanlon did it again. She made me fall in love with such wonderful people. Mists of Fate is an enjoyable page turning delight. All three books are well written and so easy to read; hard to put down. Thanks Nancy, can't wait for your next book.

Mists of fate

I rarely write a review but I just finished reading books 1-3 for the second time. All three were so excellent. Well written, interest peaked and held from start to finish. Not your average story line. Anyone who loves time travel will love all the books.

Soulmates can they escape their future

Not as enjoyable as the first book in the series that is not to say it wasn’t a good read. I just felt as though the author was in a hurry to get this book written so she could move on to the next one, we shall see.

Grammatically correct?

This book, as well as the series, was very riveting. Unfortunately, grammatical errors exist in each book. Either, she is not as concerned about grammar or her proofreader stinks.
