Serina and Mizukawa-sempai have been going out for over a year now, but now that the time has come for Sempai to get down to brass tacks if he wants to get into a good school, things are changing between them. It hasn't been easy, but they've done their best to trust in each other. Now the big day is just around the corner... and if Sempai can ace his college entrance exams, they'll know it was worth the wait.
It’s coming up to sempai’s entrance exams and Serina and Mizukawa are still on hiatus. With Christmas looming and graduation on the horizon, could things be any more awkward for our pair? Only if you take into account one of the worst manga covers I’ve ever seen!
No, seriously, that cover sucks.
I have often wondered why a series where things just sort of happen and injects drama at times where it doesn’t need any has so tickled my fancy and I finally feel like I have my answer.
Beyond being about a relationship in a way that many, many romance manga can never properly manage and being interesting while doing so. Beyond having a realistic attitude towards sex (okay, maybe this volume underestimates hormones a little).
No, what this series does specifically well is capture the kind of early-in-a-relationship buzz where everything is sunshine and roses and you’ll be together forever and nothing will ever come between you and you’re nauseating your friends with how insufferably twee you are but you don’t care.
That’s why the ridiculous hiatus from last time didn’t ring true, doubly so compared to how it would have in another manga. These two are still stupid drunk on one another and suggesting otherwise is pretty pointless.
And I like that! I’ve been in that zone before and it felt amazing and before things cool and you settle into a deeper emotional bond (or not) it’s a wild ride, especially when you’re young. So seeing these two over Christmas and possibly the only theme park date in manga I ever found truly enjoyable is a treat and a half.
They are the book and when the two of them are separated things are nowhere near as fun. Lots of fun little gags show up as well, especially in the last storyline, adding to the light, breezy feel. I could do without the lingering rival nonsense, but he gets a couple moments, even if I mostly want to shoo him away.
It’s not as good as it’s earliest chapters, but it’s definitely back on track from last volume. With one more to go, I suspect that this will remain my easiest recommend for a shojo romance that’s more about the couple than the road to get there.
I do think Sweat and Soap has eclipsed it in its portrayal of a relationship, but this captures a specific type of romance (high school and hormonal, mostly) and does it very, very well.
I can’t believe this is the penultimate volume in the series. It’s hands down one of my favorite shojo and I don’t want it to end.
I feel like I’m saying it for every volume but, this is still the cutest manga ever!!! I’m so happy that Serina and Mizukawa are truly back together and that they’ve come to terms with how they feel about each other.
Unfortunately, I didn’t love this volume as much as the previous volumes (even though I still like it!) since it did focus much more than usual on Higuchi. I didn’t like how he acted towards Serina. I guess Azusa Mase wanted to show one-sided love through the character of Higuchi, still, I didn’t like how it was done. If I remember correctly, Serina never let Higuchi feel like something was possible between them, yet he is not trying to move on from the situation and puts Serina in an uncomfortable situation towards Mizukawa. I didn’t like Higuchi since the beginning of the series, so I guess it didn’t help.
I do not think I will continue with this series as recently it have gone from a very good romantic and often funny story deteriorating to a random volume 7 where the LMC dyed his hair blonde and nothing really happens to vol 8 and 9 where the MFC has started falling for the SMC. While I appreciate the author is trying to put the characters in real situations e.g loneliness and boredom within the relationship it feels the MFC is becoming very shallow character compared the how she was at the start, at Christmas she tells the LMC how much she loves him then she shares a bath with the SML and has emotions when he is near her to the volume ending at his confession which she obviously reacted to.
The love triangle arc really needs to end.
If you like high drama you will like this volume is you want romance forget it after the first section.
I'm glad the marathon let's-artificially-pause-our-relationship-while-I-prep-for-college-exams story arc is over. That turned out to be a drag. Although much of this volume was slice-of-life ephemera that tread water until the next story arc, there were enough highlights to make it an enjoyable read.
Azusa Mase's artwork is loose and sketchy, which can come across as rough at times, but overall has a warm intimacy. My favorite page was the series of three panels as Serina received a text that Mizukawa had passed his exams. Her silent cheer and puzzled schoolmate's face in the middle of class was an adorable moment. Azusa's insights on love were also entertaining as a classmate discussed the facts of life about how there were two kinds of men to women: the love of their life and everybody else.
Over all, an enjoyable volume. Volume ten will feature a rival. Whether it reads as typical shoujo or not depends on how Azusa handles Serina's feelings. Mizukawa isn't the most attentive of boyfriends. You know in the end he won't lose, but you don't know how long it will take to win Serina back.
I’m beyond happy that they got back together! I loved seeing everyone enjoying themselves before they separate when going into their next school year. With there only being 1 volume left in the series, I’m sad to eventually finish reading it but I’m excited to see how things wrap up. Also, this manga series as a whole has given me massive 2nd-lead-syndrome with Higuchi-kun’s considerate self! The cliffhanger for this volume in relation to him, and specifically the last chapter, left me infatuated with him due to how much respect he has for Serina and her relationship.

I like this series, don’t get me wrong, but there is just something about each volume that holds me back from giving it a higher rating. This time? I think it was the fact that we saw Serina and her sempai angsting over being apart and “having to take a break”...and then it’s resolved so quickly at the beginning of this volume. Um, okay? But I sense an end is drawing near, so I shall stick through to the conclusion, whenever that may be...
Mizukawa once again saving this relationship. He’s so precious, I love him. The volume started off weird due to their out of left field break up, but I’m glad they both worked it out. Not sure what’s going to happen with Higuchi, the bath scene threw me off a bit since we’re so close to the end. Serina is still acting so oblivious like girl…But, anyway the theme park chapter was so cute, I love these two together 😭🩷
