The Evidential Medium: A Step-by-Step Guide to Evidential Mediumship, Psychic Development, and Spirit Communication

Rate this book
Kay Reynolds is a medium, public speaker, and author of the new book, The Evidential A Practical Guide for Developing Mediumship. In The Evidential Medium, she shares her journey of training to be a medium, along with practical exercises to help you unlock the ancient tools of mediumship you hold deep within your soul. Kay trained as a medium at the prestigious Arthur Findlay College, the world’s foremost college for the advancement of spiritualism and psychic sciences, under the mentorship of Mavis Pittilla, one of the college’s longest-standing tutors. The College’s tutors are renowned as the best in the world, and Kay was fortunate enough to study there extensively for seven years. Kay holds an M.Ed. and has twenty-nine years’ teaching experience. She has taught students from grade school right into adulthood. In her work as a medium, Kay utilizes all her educational training as well as the public speaking skills she gained at countless education conventions. The Evidential Medium is a self-help book—with a twist of memoir—and was written for everyone interested in learning about being a medium. Sharing the highs and lows of her own mediumship journey, Kay takes the reader on a roller coaster ride. What went wrong? What steps did she take to overcome the many hurdles that arise for every student of mediumship? Kay’s stories are interspersed with practical exercises so that students can meet the challenges of mediumship head on. Reading this book and doing the exercises will help you avoid the setbacks and obstacles that Kay overcame to make her mediumship extraordinary. Learning to be a medium is difficult, so Kay uses the “KISS Keep It Simple, Silly” in her teaching and writing. There are no sure or true ways to teach mediumship. Every individual is different and much of what you learn comes down to you, the medium. Most of the work students of mediumship do is “inner work,” meaning that you must go within and heal yourself from the inside out, deepening your connection to the God Source as you do so. As a teacher of mediumship, Kay’s role is to guide you through the process. She facilitates your transformation, pointing out your strengths and weaknesses—and giving you a step-by-step process to help you reach your goals. Those readers who are teachers of mediumship or administrators of mediumship programs know that teaching mediumship is not easy. In this book, Kay shares the tricks of the trade, breaking down the teaching curriculum and exercises into incremental phases that even the newest learner can understand and follow. What sets Kay’s book apart from other books on mediumship? Kay knows how to teach and how to relate complex information in simple terms. She understands the mindset and needs of her readers and ensures that those needs are met. Using graphics, charts, and stories—all the while poking fun at her own triumphs and failures—Kay keeps it real and relevant, inspiring readers to rise above the trials and tribulations and to keep going on their mediumship path. Aspiring mediums are always searching for a safe environment in which to explore the world of mediumship more deeply. Kay reassures her readers that “You are not alone.” Those thoughts that race through your mind—thoughts of disillusionment, disappointment, and discouragement—have raced through the minds of countless other mediumship students too. Kay offers you a sense that you belong to a wider mediumship community, and a sense of comfort when the going gets rough. Kay is a cheerleader, a mentor, a guide—and her words are a soft, reassuring whisper that says, “Keep going, you’re doing great.”

Anyone who wants to take their mediumship further, to the next level and who is serious about it, should read this book. But it’s not just a one and done book. It needs to be studied. We all know that mediumship is an ongoing experience, and we are never done learning. We only stop growing within it, if we choose to do so.

This is good for positive criticism. I had a lot of self-reflection in this book. It made me see how sloppy/unorganized my mediumship is. I know what I struggle with, I knew it before reading this book. I’m already doing a lot of the things discussed in the book, been doing it. Just not to the level that she is. Not perfected.

I don’t want to do any audience stuff like she mentions though. It’s hard enough on my nerves when I do it for just one person I don’t know. No stage stuff or spotlight for me. That’s not for me!

I have been on this journey for a few years now. It started a long time ago but I only started seriously working with it back in 2019. I have a practice/development circle that I’m very grateful for, and I’m excited to see where this goes as I move forward with it.

This book was reviewed by S. Emerson even if it should come up under David Lloyd.

I was gifted an advanced copy of 'The Evidential Medium' in order to leave an honest review. It is refreshing to have a book that addresses the needs of mediums at various levels who strive to improve the quality and depth of their work, from the beginning stages of development on through advanced professionals. The exercises are clearly presented followed with personal stories to illustrate the purpose and best use of the exercises, along with charts and suggestions for assessment. This book serves as a reference guide for practices useful to an individual as well as groups, such as a practice circle or reading exchanges. Beyond the practical uses and exercises of this book, Kay's personality and integrity come through as she emphasizes soul work, ethics, and what constitutes a polished medium.

Kay's stories of her own challenges make her relatable and her reverence for the work is clear. The chapters on ethics and polished mediums should be reviewed periodically to protect the sanctity and healing power of the work, the well being of clients who are often vulnerable, and in respect of the spirit world who so graciously works with us and through us. Kay's personal stories, as well as her emphasis on soul work and ethics, spoke directly to my soul.

When I'm in between fiction books and I want to pick a book quickly – a quick and engaging read – I'll often pick something paranormal or spiritual. I picked this one without reading too much about, not realising that it's a book written by a medium for *other* mediums, not for lay-people. Regardless, it was still insightful. Every second chapter contains exercises for mediums – I just skipped past those. I think if I were starting out as a medium (which I am not, haha) I would probably find this useful, or at least, find some little tidbits? Either that, or I'd find it kind of daunting and overwhelming. I'll say this: before reading this book I had zero concept that mediums have to train to be mediums, or at least, to hone their skill. I just assumed it was a God-given ability that mediums kind of just run with. But this book taught me that there's a lot of nuances to learn... certain ways to speak to people, to address audiences, certain ethics to uphold, and what not. It also made clear the differences between psychic and medium, which I think must often be confused. In any case, an interesting read for sure. I knocked off a star because it didn't blow my socks off, exactly, but still a good read.

I was gifted this copy for an honest review.

This book by Kay Reynolds seems to be aimed at the intermediate to advanced mediumship students, people who are aiming to become professional mediums. The book covers advanced topics like how to format a professional reading to include the WOW factor, platform demonstrations, dealing with multiple spirit communicators, how to assess yourself as a medium, and professional ethics. She emphasizes the importance of trusting spirits to take the lead, allowing information to flow through rather than strictly following a list of required evidence.

This book is a well structured and organized book, laying out suggested mediumship exercises, preceded by accounts of her personal struggles during her mediumship training at Arthur Findlay College to demonstrate key mediumship development concepts. Useful tables and illustrations are given to help guide mediumship practices. As I am still very much a beginner medium, I look forward to trying out and practicing these exercises once I develop my mediumship to the point where I can consistently sense spirits and know how to extract snippets of evidence I do get into a semblance of a story.

An absolutely inspiring book on mediumship development

This book is both a beautiful memoir and practical guide for mediumship. As a practicing medium I’ve felt everything the author has felt and developing mediums feel. This includes everything from overcoming insecurities and lack of confidence to being unsure of ones own abilities or power. Kay eloquently covers everything a developing medium needs beyond just the simple mechanics. This is so much more than a “how to” book...it moves on to set the standards for best practices. This is truly an excellent book and we’re all blessed the Kay Reynolds wrote it.

3.5☆ It was an okay read. I enjoyed her stories about her developing her mediumship skills with professional mediums at a school in England and the struggles she's faced during her development. I do feel you need to have some experience behind you before you can work through this book and people who you can train and practice with. As there wasn't many exercises (apart from 2 exercises) you could practice solo. I do feel I learned quite a bit about what and not to do, how to overcome challenges, and techniques to use during your development with other people Face to face.
