This book is Angel Rosen's first collection of poems. These poems contemplate the purpose of life, death and everything in between. This will be the book for you if you find yourself wondering about how much space you take up and why other people may not understand the things about you that make you who you are.
These poems come from a place of grief, of curiosity, and the desire to be understood. For every girl who has felt out of place in this world, for every girl who invented her own place to be.
This is a truly beautiful collection of poems! I loved the emotions that the poems created and conveyed, especially “Eliza”, which is probably my favourite. There is something incredibly human in all the poems, which makes them a delight to read!
The poetry here feels refreshingly complete: that is, there's a throwing away of the obstacle of ambiguity as author Rosen genuinely invests to find connection with the reader. The collection seems to succeed in an effort of open vulnerability. For the most the connectivity between pieces exposes a shared universe that's too dark, a brave gamble and one that works. Few pieces occupy my tussle-for-favourites list but each and every contains a verse or four that's memorable. Whether these are autobiographic or not isn't the barometer: they feel real. Props too for Victor Carlesi's in-key iconic cover.
It took me longer than I expected to finish this collection — not because it was too long, but because each poem left me oddly satiated to the extent that I had to give them all adequate time to sit and seep into my permanence before successfully moving forward.
Grotesque, gritty, genuine, gothic, occult, & sapphic, the author writes from a heart that is best described as divine, feminine, and Victorian. Each line oozes on out of the pages and makes the reader’s mouth taste like sweet fruit, copper, & toxic kisses. The poems in this collection don’t require that additional adornment of visible overthinking, over-pruning, & over-polishing to the point of synthetic non-recognition. Rather, they are spared of that, and therefore at their most gorgeous & gruesome as they are — free-flowing, airy, & accountable to effortless, natural movement.
Even in achieving so much finesse, Aurelia does not sacrifice its rawness, darkness, bitter sweetness, wholeness, or fullness. Moreover, the lines in each poem (the poems — which vary in form, style, & length throughout the collection), while deeply poetic, lyrical, rhythmic, complex, strategic, skillfully fashioned, and flawlessly created/cultivated, are written such that poetry lovers of all levels can connect with the work in a way that invades, infiltrates, & inspires them exactly how all great writing should — exactly the way Aurelia already does.
Tender, turbulent, and tragic, Aurelia is immaculate.
I haven’t read poetry in a long time and I’m so glad I was introduced to this one. It was written so well and each poem told a story. Thank you so much for the arc. I cannot wait to read the second one!
Quite a few of these poems were extremely relatable, The Bath especially. A couple of them I didn't understand, but I blame myself for that, not the author. Would definitely recommend.
"I am tired of writing about what burns me. I am tired of comparing myself to fire, and comparing my lovers to other explosives . . ." --"Elements", pg 38
I don't know how Angel Rosen does it, but she does it. This girl blows me away. Her lines are simply amazing, there's far too many to quote here, as I find something that makes my jaw drop in awe in every poem. I simply cannot get enough of her work.
I felt the emotions of the author flowing off the pages; there was no doubt that these poems came from a place of pain that had slowly been transmuted into something beautiful. I read the entire collection in one sitting because I just could not put it down.
Angel Rosen has published something that my poetry aspires to be.
