Thank you to NetGalley, VIZ Media, Bunta Kinami, and Rooster Teeth for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This volume begins with a dance to commemorate the coming Vytal Festival. This is a great chance to see some character development, especially with Pyrrha and Jaune. When Ruby lacks a date, she easily finds an alternative way to entertain herself: fighting the bad guys trying to take advantage of the distracted party-goers!
Afterward, the teams of Beacon get to go on actual, legitimate missions as huntsmen and huntresses. Team RWBY gets their requested location, even though Ruby might have hinted to Headmaster Oz that Torchwick (or his lackeys) might just be in the area. Along with plenty of Grimm, who brought the place to ruin. When Ruby vanishes from her post on watch, team RWBY must fine and save her, though they may find themselves against a familiar foe...
This volume is full of well-drawn action scenes and jumps from one moment to the next with ease. The art is phenomenal. This volume concludes the Beacon Arc, though there are plenty more arcs in the world of RWBY and I hope to see their manga adaptations come to life.
I really dislike that in this manga they don’t give the darker skinned characters any pigment. That’s pretty much the only complaint I have because the other issues are mostly just how fast paced it is but that’s kinda expect since they are trying to make so few for each of the volume.
I surprisingly like the small changes they make to the story line here and there and I love that they do add some details that would explain certain holes in the animated series. I like the art as well but I know this “laid back” kinda art style isn’t for everyone. I do wish we got some more personality out of our characters but I am seeing it more and more in each of these volumes so I didn’t put that in the complaints paragraph lol.
Can’t wait for more though and I have the second novel book to read now so I’ll hopefully get to that soon as well and then I can buy the third one that just came out! :)
Team RWBY investigates Mountain Glen after they got some intel about the White Fang and Roman. Roman conducts his first big plan..
I liked these adaptations of RWBY’s story, the art was great and it was fun but I felt that the manga focused too much on the action and we haven’t seen a lot of important foreshadowings for later, bigger plot points and character development was scarce. While the main characters are team RWBY the show is very much about team RWBY and their friends, and the other characters were really sidelined, especially team JNPR who are probably their closest friends.
We got to see the school dance which was a nice touch, and Jaune and Pyrrha’s friendship was portrayed really well but lots of very defining moments, especially for Jaune’s character were left out. There was also an important bonding that should have happened between Blake and Yang here, with Yang supporting her and looking out for Blake when she was overwoking herself. This was cut entirely, along with their shared dance which in my opinion had far more impact in the show than the dance Blake shared with Sun.
Roman also felt lackluster, here he is portrayed as a villain who enjoys being one but we don’t really learn much about his motives. While he was definitely a bad guy in the show, he was also incredibly fun, and that didn’t really come through in the manga for me.
The story closes with some open ended questions about who crashed the school party, but I don’t feel like it all really feels as impactful as the show did.
I feel that with so much emphasis on the action, and little character development or foreshadowings for what is to come a lot of RWBY’s magic was lost. Sure, you might get into RWBY for the interesting fight scenes and the crazy weapons but it creates such well developed characters that you keep coming back for more and storylines that develop later are so much more complicated and heavier than you would ever expect from the show at first glance.
All in all I think the manga is good to be appreciated as an extra material next to the show or to see if you would find the world interesting. It can be a great starting point for getting into RWBY but it leaves out so many important things that you shouldn’t take it as a complete portrayal of what RWBY can offer.
...is it bad? Not exactly. Is it good? ...no...not really.
The pacing of this volume is really weird, we get six pages leading up to a dance, six pages of the dance, then we're back into fighting action that is incredibly blurry and hard to look at. Even when the plot moves on, we're subjected to this 0 to 100 type action and more blurry art.
Overall, I feel like this could've been a good series if it'd even out the pacing so we could have some more time with the characters (cause right now they're kinda vague, like a cardboard cutout, pretty but flimsy) and if the art had included more detail instead of the hazy mist backgrounds. Clear backgrounds force the characters to be bolder by contrast. Not the best, but I'm not giving up on the RWBY franchise...I just have to find time to watch the show.
After volume two I decided to give this one more go but I really struggled getting through this. I stopped/started a few times and when I eventually finished it, I felt like there hadn’t been any overall progress in the story.
I’m not sure how much having no background knowledge of RWBY is impacting my enjoyment. I would have hoped the manga could have been enjoyed separate from the tv series but I feel like readers are expected to have the context from the show to follow the manga better.
On the whole this entire volume felt like mini filer chapters or side stories that are normally bonus chapters as the end of the main books, not something that was the main story.
This volume starts out with a school dance, and gives us some fun character development to balance the action that follows. After the dance, the teams get their first missions as Hunters and Huntresses, and team RWBY is paired with Doctor Oobleck, and sent to the location they'd hoped to investigate- the area they suspect Rowan Torchwick and White Fang are hiding in. When Ruby disappears during her turn as lookout, the rest of the team set out to find her, and....I'm not telling! The art is lovely as always, and the action just flows so nicely I can see it happening in my mind. This volume concludes the Beacon Arc with a satisfying, hopeful ending that looks toward further adventures, and I'm looking forward to the next arc!
There is a dance. Then, a school practice exercise that turns into a real fight. RWBY: The Official Manga Vol 3 is the last volume in this prequel to the anime series.
I’m sure I would have enjoyed this entire series more if I had watched the anime first. As a standalone, it works but other than the fighting scenes, there isn’t much going on here. RWBY: The Official Manga Vol 3 earns, as did the previous volumes, 3 stars. However, it did encourage me to begin the anime.
Thanks to VIZ Media and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
Interesting: I still don't like this "adaptation" for multiple reasons, but I was somehow disappointed, that it didn't cover the third season of the show as well. Probably just pure curiosity of how the mangaka would have tackled the more grim and emotional parts. I feel like the ending was rather rushed: The three manga cover the first two volumes of the show, but volume one got a lot more space than volume three. I feel like the author had much more fun including litte quibs and banter than to really flesh out the individual characters, which is why it fell flat for me.
I think this final volume was a good installment. I really enjoyed my time with these characters. I do think there are other magical girl stories that I enjoy more, but I think any RWBY fan would be happy with this manga adaptation. I am much more likely to pick up the anime now.
It is a fantastic anime and manga anthology fantastic story all the way through, honestly my opinions are definitely five stars because it is so cool to see the art what is drawn out and how well the manga is put together.
I love rwby the anime series it fantastic series definitely look into all.
idk why they had to make it so short and fast paced😭😭 a lot of things happened in such a small amount of time like you barely get to know the characters and then it ends. i'll prolly watch the tv series
Whilst I enjoyed the show, I've only watched one season. I prefer this adaption of it, something about it just resinated with me more. I think the art in the show is a little off putting and ugly, the fights scenes are pretty good though.
The art in this was amazing, I would love if they decided to carry on turning the whole RWBY show into a manga. I know that this adapts the whole of season 1 by halfway through the second volume so I imagine that this covers the first 2 seasons.
The story is about Ruby joining true cross academy to become a hunter, whilst having run ins with the guy from clockwork orange. There is also some dust involved, this one was about his attack on the city with mecha and a deadly train. It was pretty good I loved all of it the friendships the four girls have made, everything involving Jaune and the whole adaption it's great!
In this volume, I feel like the story didn't advance much. It was mainly about Blake: her ears, her issues with the dog, her feelings as a faunus. Maybe I'm missing some things because I don't watch the anime? Overall, meh. #NetGalley
No spoilers. Honestly, this is going to be so short lol. I have very little to say about this one.
This is a three volume manga that covers a lot of the first volume of RWBY. Honestly, I don’t know why this needed to exist. The single manga volume made by Shirow Miwa did exactly that and was great. This on the other hand kind of sucked. The art wasn’t all that good, which made the story a bit unclear. If this was your first introduction to RWBY, you would be confused as heck.
Overall, I didn’t really care about this one. I read it, it was meh. Do I recommend it? No.
I really liked this book! I have already watched the show myself, which was a while back and I loved it! The action, characters and storyline is awesome! I just found out that there is a manga, which is why I definitely needed to read this! I love it! The drawings are amazing and I love how the characters look like! Perfect!
