The Veil Diaries #8

When the Dead Come Home

Rate this book
I’m Lexie Delaney, and I’m a necromancer. Which means, I can see the dead, talk to them, affect them. Not as fun as it sounds. Especially since the Veil closed and the dead have been stuck here.
Things in town are getting tense. School is starting, and I’m already tired of our plan to keep our relationships quiet. Bodies keep showing up and no one has a clue as to why. Ghosts are still missing and we’re still searching the hiking trails for clues.
Secrets are coming to light, answers are found. And the guys are snapping at each other. But I can keep everything together. Right?

B.L.Brunnemer has been a devoted reader since she was young. As a child, she was instantly attracted to horror stories. The plot, the suspense, the action. She loved it all. Which, as she grew, branched out into several other genres. But a strong female character always caught her eye. Through the years romance became a big part of her reading. Then she found the Young Adult/New Adult genre. But she had a problem. She never found the romance between most characters to be realistic enough for her. At least in the paranormal romance section.

So, she decided to fix that. She'd been writing for years already and had always struggled to finish a manuscript. Until, she decided to write what she wanted to read.

B.L. Brunnemer doesn't have any other publications at this time. She's just a woman, who loves a good story with great characters. And she hopes you'll love them too.

The characters I liked now are getting on my nerves and at every turn you get a new species present, because a necromancer isn't enough.

My guess is

Not going to lie, books 6 and seven were also pretty wobbly in my opinion. Not exactly plot wise...because I still thought the author has a firm hold on that. If not, even almost flawless. World-building and writing style and other important components to go deeper about the whole necromancy thingy.

But I swear the characters were difficult. As in every other character around Lexie. I keep thinking to myself...she's strong...but how much further? I think I'm this close to snapping and I'm not even Lexie.

I guess it's partly because there are a lot of things happening...too much to contain in one book...in one series. I'm barely catching up to the details about the veil. Then there were issues from everyone and everywhere. Like being pulled in all possible, different directions.

Then here's my biggest trigger - Miles.

I'm still not wholly convinced that everyone isn't out to get Lexie.

Anyway, on an entirely different topic...HADES!

This read officially took at least 7 years off of me.

It's no secret that I'm not a big fan girl of these books, although they have hooked me enough that I've continued with the series, despite never reading books with teenage characters. I wasn't a fan at the start, but the books grew on me over time, but I wasn't a massive fan of this one.

The world building and supernatural stuff in the series has always been the most interesting thing. Lexie's powers as a necromancer are interesting and I like the fact there are all sorts of different supernatural groups and the way they are all interconnected. But I thought it all felt really messy in this book. There's so much going on with the dufverwnt factions ad I don't think it is very well articulated at all. It's a shame, as I feel there's a lot of potential wasted.

The pacing is a bit off, too. The first third really drags, with just the usual cringy nicknames and interactions between them all. Only this time we have the fact that Miles is acting like an ass, and random groping in the janitor's closet. There are also other physical developments between Lexie and some of the guys, although these felt a bit random to me. Miles' rules about no touching Lexie in front of each other and teying to keep it all secret are really tiresome. If they're down with her being with all of them, then treating the situation like five separate relationships just aren't going to work. It's realistic, I guess, that they start out this way, but that doesn't make it any less tiresome.

The stuff with Lexie and the Principal and Janis working at the school was also tedious. Just leave the damn school already. Miles is a freaking millionaire, pay for a tutor or something. Just pointless, and annoying drama.

The potential of the world building and, as annoying as they often are, the relationships and bonds between Lexie and guys have always hooked me in, despite my better judgement, but I might be done with this series finally. Although, the masochist in me sort of wants to see where this all goes.

Liked it. I would've loved it if it showed more chemistry and more about the bonds of the group. The last book (book 7) had a filler feel to it. This one has also a filler feel to it.

It isn't like the first couple of books. I'm afraid it won't have the same feel as the first books. It's more about all the things that happens around the group instead of about the innerworkings of the group. Besides: wth is happening with Miles? I don't like where it's going.

My advice: pull back a little and remember why people fell in love with the series in the first place: Lexie and the dynamics of the group.

Read other books by this author in the future: yes

In the first chapter you get reintroduced to the main characters and some side characters. For some time at the beginning things move slower, but as usual the speed picks up until the last 30 % are really fast with some twist, the readers do not expect. It had everything, heartbreaking moment, a good story, relationship drama and some na smut. And it leaves the readers with a lot of questions.

I loved the whole book and after reading it the first time, I felt like I missed some things, because the #cakeeaters of RHR and I were discussing this while reading it and they talked about some stuff, that I could not remember. So I need to do a reread and I might have to change my review after that a little.

Some parts I really liked. But even though it was 200 pages, if felt as though things...moved too slow? Theories, characters or abilities are coming out of nowhere.

Is Miles supposed to look mysterious, a man growing up or dangerous? Because he seemed like the teenager he is to me. And very unlike the mature, thoughtful and controlled Miles we knew so far. As for Zeke's revelations...too much tragedy in one character sort of spoils it. I mean yeah, okay, the world is a bad and unfortunate place, but between the guys and Lexie, the victimometer is hitting red and it doesn't sit well. Issac I liked. He did well, way better than expected. Tara needs to learn to get over herself.

What's up with Mile's dad? What is the matter with the headmistress? As for how Riley ends up..honestly after the things she said, I wouldn't bother with her. I don't understand why Lexie does. And why she's so heartbroken over what happens to Riley. Sorry, but not sorry. Also, I need to mention once again that Miles is being an inconsiderate ass, and since Lexie is supposed to be a tough chick, she shouldn't have put up with the shit he did IMO.

Last but not least...the sexual component. I think it tried to be hot, but it didn't come across like that to me. Apart from one scene with Issac, which was naturally blundering, innocent, sweet and maybe a bit awkward, the rest didn't convince me.

Some parts of this book felt rushed, which was disappointing considering that the previous books were written better, more attentively perhaps.

So I was disappointed in this book. Not only was it short, it also went from topic to topic to quickly. It felt rushed. From Asher showing up, telling family about the supernatural world, heck even that didn't make an appearance it was just causally said like hey take out the trash oh by the way your sister is a vampire kind of way. To a sex scene, wham bam thank you madam oooh look my uncle is home. Also whatever is going on with Miles, yeah I felt like that should be explained alot more. Hell alot of things in this book should have been explained more. Not this, whatever this is. Okay so nevermind I know what this, this is a giant disappointment from a excellent author and a darn good book with a story line that deserved better than this

How could you not read this??

Oh My Gosh! Did that just happen? I need a moment to get myself together!

Such a thrilling, tense, rollercoaster ride! BL certainly knows how to captivate her audience. Revelations, more mystery and an emotional ride i wasnt ready to end. So much going on, so many crumbs to piece the puzzle together this book has it all! Not to mention heart wrenching and tender moments as well as a bit of steam and humour to balance it all out. What more could you ask for?

I highly recommend this series!! If you have not read this, then why the hell not? Give it a go, i bet you will be obsessed just like the rest of us!

Not my favourite by a long shot

I’m not sure what’s happened, but I’m probably going to wait till the next two or three books are out, look at reviews and then decide if I want to carry on with TVD. The short chapters from different characters, the surprise character development and the character assassination(s) has just lost me. The writing was fine, but the plot and pacing.... I’m really not excited about this series anymore. It just felt flat. Yes, there was a lot happening, but it still felt like filler, searching the woods like the secret seven, an evil headmistress and getting nowhere.

I don’t know what happened...I tried to read this as slowly as I could. It didn’t work. And now I have to wait for the next one😭

That being said...

Wtf was up with Miles?! He’s my favorite; but after this book, I can’t stand him! I don’t like how he dismissed Lexi’s feelings and the constant reminder about rules was hella annoying.

Zeke & Issac were my boys this time around.

This was such and easy read I feel like it had the same flow as the earlier books focusing on the relationship with the guys trying to navigate though each relationship and trying to find a balance couldn't put it down. this book also has different characters points of view which I loved and worked really well adding more to the story.

When the Dead Come Home is book 8 in the series and I can't believe it! You MUST read these in order. There is a lot of world building that has gone into the series and you would be lost if you tried to jump in at this point.

Ok, so here are a few of my notes while reading When the Dead Come Home:

What is happening to Miles? He was my favorite guy up until this book. Now, he is a jackass.
How do these people get employed in schools? Jadis shows up and must do magic to trick the school into hiring her as a guidance counselor.
Dylan's back again. I knew he was trouble. Also, kinda sad.
Poor Riley! Oh  my gosh! I mean, she was a jerk to Alexis about the whole polyamory thing, but no one deserves that.
There is sex in this book!! And one of the guys is kind of kinky!
So many POVs: Alexis (of course), but also all 5 of the guys, Rory, Jessica, Tara, and even Jadis. Holy moly!
The Veil is open and we figure out who closed it (which also leads to who has been stealing souls)

Overall, this was a phenomenal addition to the series. When the Dead Come Home has a LOT going on, but you are so invested in everything, you gobble it up. I can't wait to see where Brunnemer takes the series because she keeps surprising me!

I have enjoyed this entire series in audio and will continue to do so! Elizabeth Hart and Nelson Hobbs do a wonderful job. Hart has unique "male" voices for each of the guys and it's so important in a story with 5 love interests!

  POV: multiple 1st
  Tears: no
Trope: reverse harem, witches, shifters, vampires, necromancers
  Triggers:
  Series/Standalone: series
  Cliffhanger:
  HEA:

other paranormal RH reads like The Power of Five by Alex Lidell, Brothers of the Flame by Mary Martel, Legacy by LJ Swallow ...then you will probably like When the Dead Come Home!

I’m sorry BL ! 🙏🙏

I actually didn’t like this one all that much 😭😭 and it pains me to the core.
Literally, when I finished it I put a 5star rating because I’m used to doing that with tvd and I love BL but I was thinking back on the book today and had to change my rating, it just didn’t feel right. Like I was cheating with myself or something.

And I guess the biggest part for me is Miles like most people sorry 😂

I guess I know that not all characters have to be happy but for me that wasn’t an unhappy Miles, he was not even the same person, like at all.

- He blatantly dismissed Lexie’s feelings

He was the sweetest boy, so careful and kind and then that...

- Forgot about the date with his Lexie whom he supposedly LOVES

Really dude ? Your FIRST REAL DATE EVER with the woman you love, and you forget about her? Argh my heart hurts.

- Forgot about said date because he was focused on a secret project

Why the heck was it secret in the first place? Not to get their hopes up? Come on, you can present it in a way that shows it’s experimental so no biggie if it doesn’t work, but be all secretive and stuff, knowing your friends know you’re hiding something!

- His constant problem with Lexie showing any kind of affection towards the other guys

It would have been fine for ANY other guy but he’s literally the one that came up with the idea, and almost forced it on Zeke and now he’s the most insecure? BS. And I know people can change their minds when they’re actually confronted with reality but this is Miles we’re talking about, he’s logical, controlled, and always prepared (he had freaking tampons for Lexie because he was friend with a girl for Christ’s sake!), he thought a lot about it before presenting it to everyone, so it’s definitely not a lack of “thinking this through”.

- The Lucy thing...

Like... if you’re not into the girl at all, just put your girl and your friends at rest! Don’t play mysterious or whatever! Letting Lucy stay for a family meeting was legit painful to read, SHE’S NOT FAMILY. - And the thing that genuinely broke my heart, was him tearing down the greenhouse without even thinking twice about Lexie and what that place represented.
Honestly, I felt like crying at that😢

Wow that was long and a little agressive, I apologize for that 😂

That last bit with Riley? How unnecessary! We don’t see her for so long, honestly, we kinda hate her for being an awful friend to Lexie, and at the very end they get along a little better and she instantly gets kidnapped never to return ?? BL could have just left her out of it completely and that would have been it. Rahhhh so frustrating

I also felt like the plot was all over the place, and the pace somehow wasn’t quite right to me, idk 🤔

Oh also! The whole issue with the principle is simply unacceptable to me. No school figure of authority would blatantly try to ruin a student... and Rory being a cop, I’m sure there’s something that could be done in the eyes of the law.

I did love the Hades bit though ahah Reminded me of the Academy of Assassins 👍

Voilà.
My heart genuinely aches because this review is for a series I adore, but what can I say 🤷‍♀️ sorry but not sorry.

I really was nervous to give this book a 3 star review because I feel like I'm gonna get blasted for it. But honestly? This book deserves it.
It's slow. It's slow and at times very obvious about what is going on. At some point during this book I really really cared very little for the sub par snail like supernatural plot and wanted more relationship stuff.
Things that annoyed me this book. Zeke is like a mary sue almost. So many bad things have happened to his character but this book he is super perfect and suddenly a voice of reason that Lexie turns to. I feel like his character had a complete turn around from previous books. Is it even the same guy anymore? It didnt read like it!
Asher...I wanted more scenes with him. He was up a lot in the beginning which made me happy but then nothing. Him dealing with the wolfiness more could have been nice.
Ethan. Loved his bit. Sometimes he is another character that I feel we dont get enough of. Thankfully we heard more about his character in this book even if it was a whole lot or wth is he stuff that was getting old. Phone sex was boring and not hot at all but the janitors closet was amazing.
Isaac. He is like the series goofy child. Anything stupid and any snickering going on almost always come from him. I was glad there was a more serious sweet side to him and the date night with him and Lexie was sweet.
Miles. Omg. If there was any character other than Zeke that had a change it was his. Gone was the intelligence. He acted like any other hot head teenager and I was so so so pissed that Lexie acted ooc and put up with it all. The whole bit involving his character was just bad bad bad. And not even because of Lucy (who is one of the many boring side characters).
As far as Riley being kidnapped? Please. Who cares? She was an awful awful friend. I could care less about what happens to her.
A lot of the revelations had me rolling my eyes because they've all been mentioned in the forums a million times because it's been obvious

~My thoughts~
WELL, this author's writing has evolved. The first book in this series was all about Lexi's point of view, now it's multiple perspectives (Kind of like a tv drama). Not saying it's bad but, just when the actions start with a BANG, cuts to a different perspective that is happening at the same time. While it has happened in other books in the series, the characters are not what they used to be. Now the author has also made them into main characters and they will not stand to be in the background while Lexi is taking the action. I do not particularly like getting in the mindset of the enemy. There is a scene where Lexi gets kidnapped but because it involves the supernatural world, of course, no one called Rory to tell him this, this would have help in apprehending the person responsible for killing the women around town. At the same time, how can Rory explain to the police force if they even see unexplainable force or if one of the witches casts a spell and makes them believe they did not see what they just saw. While Lexi figures out who is responsible for containing the souls, she can't tell Rory because there is no evidence. Sometimes when I see the mind of the villain it kinda feels like I see the plot like ahead of time and how it might be playing out.
~Characters~
One of my problems is Miles and although I know he is the one who is on top of everyone, he has changed significantly since the camping trip as well as in this book, not only does he keep checking up on everyone on the relationship status but he does not come clean to Lexi about his background something the guys thought he had. While the boys are dealing with both relationship and their friendship, Lexi has to deal with the supernatural world and the real world trying to balance both.
Jessica and Tara take the revelation well. Tara, yeah because she has her cousin who can see but Jessica? Well, it might be because she just saw an interesting scene unfold.
Getting in the minds of the enemy, well that is a new one.
~Book~
What can I say about the journey?
Well, for one thing, it's not boring. It has it's action pact moments, secrets do get exposed (as read from my rant), relationships are tested, and enemies are closer then everyone realizes. More secrets are being kept and I can not wait for the next book because I know for sure that Lexi might be getting down to understanding her powers and she is still growing, making her enemies realize that she is just getting started and a third party might be involved.

Yay, finally got some more of Lexie and the guys! Is it still Dylan? Who knows but the mystery of it is still hanging out there. I was so disappointed in Miles in this book but he is still trying to protect Lexie and the guys. This series is so different compared to other reads and it also takes you into another world by using your imagination and keeps you on the edge of your seat of what is going to happen next!

I like that some action finally happened in this book, but a lot of it was told to us after the fact. I didn’t understand some things though, like why is she still going to a school where a woman who wants her dead is working? I’m, homeschooling is completely an option. Rory knows also and just tells her not to piss them off. WTF?

And the character development was too startling a change for me. Such as…
* ruined the character of Miles. He was my favorite and now I don’t even care what all his secrets are.
* Zeke might as well be her big brother. Zero chemistry romantically in this book.
* Asher’s development could have been amazing, but there isn’t enough time to explore any of it so it seems like a big hassle for this late in the game.
* I feel like no one is doing anything. It’s not a war, it’s not even a battle. It’s just stress.
* The twins were great in this book. A* for both of them.
* Rory???? I get the one thing but could he be more of a absentee guardian. They shouldn’t have write him as such a great father figure to then make him just a plot device.
* Hades. Why? Doesn’t make any sense. Do we really need another character at this point?

I’m going to read the last book, but I’m getting tired of nothing happening. This books big twist was so obvious from like book 2 or 3 that I was hoping I was wrong and it was a red herring. Still hoping that.

There is something about this series that just keeps you reading, no matter how immature some of the characters may seem at times or the emotional baggage they ALL seem to toss out occasionally. They just work, and they work well, inviting the reader to look closer and discover this make shift family and what makes them tick. The plot is enveloping and shows no signs of stopping, in fact, book 8 galvanizes that underlying mystic and drags it into the light, throwing wrenches in plans and showcasing what might lay behind the curtain.

Lexie is growing, as are her guys, both together and apart. Relationships are solidified, while others are rocked with doubt and fear. Brunnemer doesn't play the game that 'love solves everything' - she injects a sense of reality into the strife, even when it's bracketed by a full paranormal world. At this point, we aren't quite sure what is going to happen next, and that speaks volumes for the talent of this particular author. A golden boy is tarnished, old loves become potential enemies, new faces emerge, fresh threats are made and the hearts of almost all of them are exposed in one way or another. It's emotional, deep, dangerous and just about perfect.

It did lose a half star from me simply because there were times it felt a bit scattered and jumped around, leading to more questions than answers and an over all sense of manic energy.

Pros:
~ Well written.
~ Character developement.
~ Issac!!!!! Yes!!!!
~ Ethan.... we al kinda know what he is, but till it's said...
~ Tara and Jess... alright, I am sorta loving them right now.
~ HADES! Enough said.

Cons:
~ Miles... Miles. I love you. Wake up boy.
~ Parts were scattered.
~ It wasn't a short book, but it FELT short.

Perspective
~ First Person, Multiple POV

Ending Type
~ Cliffhanger

Romantic Dynamic
~ MMMMMF

Character Age Range
~ 18+

My Final Verdict on When the Dead Come Home

A solid book that advances the overall plot, deepens relationships and asks all the right questions. This is a long running series well worth the price - and time. On Kindle.

sooo... heres my thoughts

i felt like bl added to many new things to keep up with.

first of all why tf was miles the way he was. like i liked book 6 miles the best. he was flirty, a little promiscuous, and a gentleman. in this book he was an ass.

second, i felt as if bl wanted to add a lot of new aspects, but didn’t want to write/ explain it all in a way that was understandable. the book was short too, and it had so many new things. it felt like a filler for book 9.

the third thing that bothered me was the hades thing. like.... i feel like its kinda self explanatory with the commentary at the end.

the fourth thing was Dylan. we never got an explanation if it was him (though it was heavily implied). and why would he ask Lexie to make cookies if he was gonna kill her? and wouldn’t he have known she was a necro after they dated?

and the last thing i had a problem with was comprehension.
half the time i couldn’t figure out what was going on because there was so much new stuff added without explanation. the pace was also a bit off.

overall this was not the strongest book and i feel like there are to many things left unresolved for this book to have finished where it did (ex: never found out who Liam was).

Don’t read other reviews.

Just read the book. I was skeptical. We’re at book 8 and while it’s been interesting so far it just seemed to kind of drag. But this book was like pouring gasoline on a fire. The paranormal aspect is less cloak and dagger and more crazy scary. The relationship building was on point. Loved this book. Keep it up! I absolutely cannot wait to see how things come together for the next book. It’s like everyone is hurtling at warp speed towards the same point and it’s going to decimate everything. I love it.

This book was kind of a let down. It feels like Lexie is loosing her connection with the guys. And it's beyond frustrating that they treat her like a human when she's not. She seems like she's supposed to the super powerful person, yet Asher is more powerful. It's annoying. And the shit everyone was hiding was stupid as well. Haven't the characters learned by now not to hide stuff? Apparently, they've forgotten their own history.

Other than that I do like it, although that thing with Hades was weird. But the rest was interesting.

I don’t know how I feel about this book

I have so many mixed feelings about this book. Maybe because we waited so long for it I was expecting a much longer book. It was so fast paced. A lot happened but at the same time I feel like not much progressed.
A lot of questions about New Orleans were answered which I am very thankful, but BL is holding so much back and since there is only one more book planned for the first part of the series I though BL would give us more. I don’t know how she is going to fit everything on book 9.
This still feels like a slow burn even though it’s supposed to be a NA series now. I mean...she didn’t even have one hot make out session with Zeke. They are dating now, and I’m pretty sure he did more with Riley than with Lexi on this book. And don’t even get me started on Miles. He did a total 180 on who he is. From having a super HOT moment in the tent on book 7 to keeping secrets and standing her up on book 8. I was just expecting more progress from their relationship now that they finally decide to be their girlfriend. Any one on one interaction she had with the guys just felt so rushed (maybe with the exception of when she was with Isaac).
Maybe I just need to accept that BL will not focus much on the romantic aspect of this storyline.
I still LOVE this series and it’s my favorite but I’m just disappointed on how fast everything took place.

Ramping up but a little confused

Im really excited that this series is finally picking up in the action category (some of the earlier books was a lot of just day to day with little action) but it feels like to ramp up that action some characters moved at light speeds and some didn’t really do much. No spoilers but one character went from being the most open and communicative and leader of family meetings to being the most secretive and not all that concerned about their relationship or human life. The whole arc felt a bit strained. And it left other characters development a bit stunted. Loved to action but maybe bring everyone along for the ride?

(hoopla) Very little romance, even though she has 5 boyfriends. They were all so close and cuddly and loving with Lexi until they actually started dating. Now the friend group is all jealous and angry and pulling away from each other. Hate that for them. Mostly a lot of danger and violence, and magical fantasy action. It gets really weird. Lexi can't catch a break. The last book has the lowest ratings, so I may not continue. Probably just read the spoilers.
