Emer loves Rory with all her heart, but that means she must also love the red cat.

When a red kitten claws its way up her gown while she’s out gathering wood, Emer Drumwiddy knows her true love will come to her in eight years’ time. It seems a long time to wait, as she’s already twenty-two. Living alone since her mother married a leprechaun man from far-off Erin a’ Fee, Emer is happy to adopt Red for company. She just doesn’t bargain on getting Rory as well.

Rory is an orphan, and he loves Emer from the first time he sees her. As he grows to manhood, he begins to love her in a different way.

Emer is fond of her wee laddie, but the eight years are nearly up. What will Rory do when her true love comes to claim her?

This book rather took me by surprise; somehow I'd got my wires crossed and was expecting an historical romance. It technically is, being set starting during the War years, and definitely a romance, but the surprising factor was finding that it was all about fairies.
Once the shock wore off, though, I found it a charming and romantic story about pleasant people. Relatable characters, exotic races and a very vivid sense of the visual combined into a reading experience that was almost like a daydream. It's a soothing book, with the slow, calm exposition of a biography rather than the violent ups and downs we have come to expect from most modern fiction. Definitely an original concept, executed in a highly original style.
