Men I'm Not Married To
In Men I'm not Married To Dorothy Parker's famous wit is on full display as she describes nine men that she did not marry. Some of the descriptions are long and involved others are but a single line such as "Lloyd wears washable neckties."

Dorothy Parker was an American writer, poet and critic best known for her caustic wit, wisecracks, and sharp eye for 20th century urban foibles. From a conflicted and unhappy childhood, Parker rose to acclaim, both for her literary output in such venues as The New Yorker and as a founding member of the Algonquin Round Table. Following the breakup of the circle, Parker traveled to Hollywood to pursue screenwriting. Her successes there, including two Academy Award nominations, were curtailed as her involvement in left-wing politics led to a place on the Hollywood blacklist.
Dismissive of her own talents, she deplored her reputation as a "wisecracker." Nevertheless, her literary output and reputation for her sharp wit have endured.

A strange, virtually unknown short novel. Basically this is like a ladies little black book – a chronicle, almost diary style diatribe of all the men that have come and gone in the protagonist’s life.
It is very modern prose, witty but unfortunately lacks the sharpness or spunk of similar style writers, such as Muriel Spark, Stella Gibbons, Barbara Pym or Eelizabeth Thurkell. Clearly ahead of it’s time though!
From the little I know of Parker, she was a bit of a trail blazer (and ball buster?) it seems! I assume some of her chunkier novels are, while similar in style, more in depth and would be worth reading.

Oh my goodness, I guessed right. I was most like Henry. Henry politely gives people friendly advice they never asked for immediately after it could've been useful, because he seems to believe he knows more about people than they do themselves. That said, I think Henry was the best of the men here... I should know, really, being like Henry....
In an age where people are overly sensitive and where sarcasm has become more aggressive than passive aggressive, Dorothy Parker's silly-but-candid writing is a breath of fresh air.

Uomini. Viziosi, farfalloni, fatui, pettegoli, meschini.
Alcuni racconti, ahimè, secondo me sono davvero troppo brevi.

===
***
Dorothy P. era questa tipa qui:
"Razors pain you
rivers are damp
acids stain you
and drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful
nooses give
gas smells awful
you might as well live."
"I wish I could drink like a lady
I can take one or two at the most
Three and I'm under the table
Four and I'm under the host"
"I require three things in a man: he must be handsome, ruthless, and stupid."

Droll more than funny
Dorothy Parker had a very dry, and occasionally bitter sense of humor. In her very short notional work, Men I'm Not Married To (Autobiographical Essays) she lists, by name a number of male types, all of whom display non-endearing behaviors. We see many of these same types in movies and TV shows as a montage of bad dates. Here they are presented in text. Some as short as one sentence, none taking more than a few pages.
From the opening poem:
I watch them as they pass me by;
At each in wonderment I stare,
And, “but for heaven’s grace, “I cry,
“There goes the guy whose name I’d wear!”
They represent no species rare,
They walk and talk as others do;
They’re fair to see -but only fair-
The men I am not married to.
Short sample”
Lloyd wears washable ties.
Viewing the collection form the Olympian heights of a 35 year married man, I can safely assert that “Nonna dem is me”. However, I am certain that women will take some pleasure in knowing that they have met, and passed on one or more of the types here published. Even if some tiny number of those pleased women, took a pass on me.

It’s so hard to describe how many times I cheerfully giggled each page. So hard to find more books by this author where I live, but if you ever come across Dorothy Parker please buy/read/keep it as close as possible. What a pen!

Incredibly genius idea, written almost like it is her diary and perhaps it is. So silly and so inspiring! Some men are merely worth an incomplete sentence, and that is all. On the other hand, we could write complete novels on another man alone, but do they even deserve that much wasted paper?
I don't know why it ended with a few pages of "Women I'm Not Married To" written by some man, as if I care 🤔

An Amusing Half Hour
How could anyone not be a Dorothy Parker fan? There is nothing she cannot write from film scripts to limericks. Men I'm Not Married To illustrates personalaties that well, get on everyone's nerves save the people to whom they belong bit in a humorous and harmless way.

Typical Parker still better than most
Acerbic, short, and filled with misanthropic asides, yet still full of Parker's sharp writing. Few writers can capture a character with so few words.

My first official introduction to Dorothy Parker, I enjoyed it quite a bit! Sassy, keen observations of different male archetypes, with a sprinkling of wry humour and not the least bit of regret for not having married any of them! ;)

I listened to this on audible because Fran Lebowitz’ humor was compared to Dorothy Parker’s works. Be it a wider generation gap, I prefer Fran Lebowitz over Dorothy Parker. Though this quick read is undoubtedly witty, I found this less relatable for a millennial (or maybe it is just me).

Surprisingly smart and funny
This is my first exposure to Dorothy Parker, and now I'm intrigued. I enjoyed the humorous reviews of these various men, some quite brief! Fast read, funny. And a sneak peak into the period of the time.
