I was sort of working on this a while back, but never made it a priority. Looked to see if I could take the exam BEFORE the test bank changed but COVID interfered with that. Now, hopefully will be an Extra Class at the end of October. I first studied a lot of this theory back in High School which was a really long time ago, so there was a lot of recognition of terms, formulas, etc. Haven't been using most of that knowledge for a long time. I did learn a bunch of radio theory for my Wireless Networking certifications, so plenty of overlap. I bought this AND it's companion as I like the other format when walking through the questions for test prep. Hopefully, these two, plus some test simulators will be enough to pass.
These books are great. This one.. is really hard. That's expected with the third and highest level of training. All three of these books are identical in structure and presentation. I would absolutely recommend these books for anyone studying for their license(s). I believe they should incorporate flashcards to make the learning process faster
P.S. I found flashcards on Quizlet for the first two exams. I made one for the Amateur Extra. You're welcome.
Whew!!! It's a big read (& heavy too) and I highly recommend you supplement this with the YouTube video series from Dave Cassler, KE0OG (current versions of Amateur Extra Class Study Guide), to help explain the plethora of concepts and techniques in this book. I studied for about 4 months before I felt ready for the test. And I used a phone/computer app called HamStudy to quiz myself and track my progress. I also took loads of practice tests.
Get the Spiral Bound version. Otherwise, the book would be unwieldy... it's heavy and floppy. The Spiral binding helps to manage this. Best of Luck in your studies. ~Paula, KZ5YL
The ARRL manual is a good resource for studying for the Extra license but by no means should be your only book. You should also get a license-pool question guide like Gordon West's (or, even better, one of the online web versions) and study to the questions. Use this book to dive deeper in technical areas but don't try to pass the exam using only this book!
