It’s just another Tuesday in Rockin, Alaska: one bear cub, two Bigfoot sightings, three corrupt law officers and a sting operation that will test new police officer Gabriella Donatti to the limits.
Right Motive is an all-new stand-alone novella from New York Times bestselling author Christina Dodd. Set in the same world as her novel Wrong Alibi, in small-town Rockin, Alaska, this story is packed with her trademark mystery, unforgettable characters, plot twists and humor.

Readers become writers, and Christina has always been a reader. Ultimately she discovered she liked to read romance best because the relationship between a man and a woman is always humorous. A woman wants world peace, a clean house, and a deep and meaningful relationship based on mutual understanding and love. A man wants a Craftsman router, undisputed control of the TV remote, and a red Corvette which will make his bald spot disappear. When Christina’s first daughter was born, she told her husband she was going to write a book. It was a good time to start a new career, because how much trouble could one little infant be? Ha! It took ten years, two children and three completed manuscripts before she was published. Now her suspense, paranormal, historical, and mystery novels have been translated into 30 languages and sold more than 15 million copies in print. Praised for her “brilliantly etched characters, polished writing, and unexpected flashes of sharp humor that are pure Dodd” (Booklist), her award-winning books have landed on numerous Best of the Year lists and, much to her mother's delight, Dodd was once a clue in the Los Angeles Times crossword puzzle. She lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest, where her 700 lavender plants share the yard with her husband’s various “Big Projects,” including a treehouse, zipline, and their very own Stonehenge. Enter Christina’s worlds and join her mailing list for humor, book news and entertainment (yes, she’s the proud author with the infamous three-armed cover) at christinadodd.com. Her legions of fans know that when they pick up a Christina Dodd book, they'll find the story, "Wildly entertaining, wickedly witty!" Christina is married to a man with all his hair and no Corvette, but many Craftsman tools.
3 Stars for Right Motive: Murder in Alaska, Book 0.5 (audiobook) by Christina Dodd read by Vanessa Johansson.
This is a fun story set in one of my favorite places, Alaska. The new police officer will be tested as she investigates the Bigfoot sightings that are coming in.
Always wanting to expand my reading base, I turned to this short piece by Christina Dodd. Set in a small Alaskan community, the short story explores a group of police officers trying to keep the peace. Dodd apparently uses this piece to offer a prequel story for a full-length novel, introducing the reader to settings and characters that had already become important. A decent piece that is easily read in a single sitting, Christina Dodd does well to provide intrigue and context.
Rockin, Alaska is a small town centre where anything’s possible. The police can never be sure what awaits them, especially on a random Tuesday. When Officer Gabriella Donatti arrives to serve, she’s pulled into the middle of a handful of oddities. Someone’s seen a frisky bear cub nosing around while Bigfoot has apparently made two appearances on opposite sides of town. All this while the detachment tries to handle the removal of three corrupt cops and an operation that exposes all the rot that has accumulated. Officer Donatti is never sure what to expect and wonders if she might have been better staying back in Nevada, her last posting before arriving in Alaska. Dodd paves the way for a great series with this teaser short story.
Christina Dodd might be a New York Times bestselling author, but she is new to me. This piece delivers a great story and serves as the foundation for one of her full-length novels. With great storytelling and strong characters, Dodd keeps the reader curious and eager to continue the foray into the full length book. A few plot points lay the groundwork for what is to come, but the piece was short enough not to have too many surprises.
Kudos, Madam Dodd, for introducing me to this series and preparing me for what’s to come.
When I planned to read Christina Dodd's Right Motive, I didn't realize it was a novella. I just jumped in. And when I saw the percentage to finishing it happening way too fast, I figured I'd learn a little more about the book. Dodd creates such good stories that even a short one is worth reading. The good news is that Murder in Alaska is a new series so I'll be sure to continue reading.
Right Motive is the prequel novella to the author's new Murder in Alaska series and it contained a few unexpected twists.
The police department of Rockin, Alaska has undergone a lot of changes after new police chief Rodolphe Dumas took over. Determined to root out the remaining corruption in the department, Dumas takes a very hands on approach. When two Bigfoot sightings are called in, Dumas heads out with officer Gabriella Donatti to find out if it's another hoax or if there's more to the calls.
The characters in this novella weren't my favorite which definitely hindered my enjoyment. Dumas is from Louisiana and at times he seemed almost like a caricature of a Cajun man due to the way he was written. Donatti is new in the department and despite being told she possesses skills from her time in Nevada before transferring to Rockin that made her an excellent candidate, she seemed like she didn't know anything about how to do her job. Outside of the characters, the Bigfoot storyline was a bit bizarre and ended up going in a confusing direction in my opinion. I did enjoy the police corruption storyline and I am interested to see if more comes from that throughout the series.
So overall I didn't love Right Motive but I will still be checking out the first book in the series, Wrong Alibi, as it doesn't appear to follow these characters and the plot sounds interesting.
I read this after I read Wrong Alibi. It's a deeper look into the new police chief and the corruption he's fighting in Rockin. There's an amusing bigfoot tale along with it. Nice companion to Wrong Alibi.
This one was just pure fun and a great way to give us a look at Rockin, Alaska. We are introduced to the new Police Chief, Dumas, who was brought in to clean up the force after the previous chief and the corruption and has already fired a couple officers and knows more are to follow. After two big foot sightings are reported on the same morning he decides to take a hands on approach and goes on a call with Officer Donatti which turns out to be not only enlightening but eye opening. This one was just made me smile and I cannot wait fore more!
This was a fun book to read. Since it is a novella, it is a short read, but oh my, it is a fun read. Rockin Alaskais a town I want to read a lot more about, and Chief Dumas Is a wonderful new character. I for one am looking forward to a new series in the making. Thank you Christina Dodd, for not ever letting medown and giving me great new books to read. I received this Book as a ARC for an honest review. Go and buy it it is a fun, quick, and very satisfying read.
This is a stand alone novella that introduces the characters that will be in the next book by Christina Dodd. I loved the descriptions of Alaska and am looking forward to the full book that is coming up. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
A short novella set in Alaska with some "interesting" characters. Not much of a mystery since it was so short, and the ending wasn't what I expected. I might want to put this one in the fantasy/paranormal genre.
This is a very short novella set in Rockin' Alaska, the setting of Christina Dodd's Murder in Alaska series. Chief Dumas is a new Cajun Police Chief, and he is trying to clean up a corrupt police force. New police officer, Gabriella Donatti, is a local and helps Chief Dumas solve the case of several Bigfoot sightings. There is also a sting operation set up to catch the dirty cops, but Gabriella's aunt gets a premonition and sends her to help. A fast paced, interesting story that was a nice story to listen to over a couple of hours. I enjoy Christina Dodd's stories with her well written stories, great characters and interesting mysteries. I am looking forward to more books set in Rockin' Alaska. This audiobook was narrated by Vanessa Johansson. I always enjoy her performances as she uses her voice to give personality, emotion and expression to the characters.
Right Motive is an introduction to Rockin, Alaska, and Police Chief Dumas and Officer Gabriella Donatti. In this novella, they try to solve the sighting of a Bigfoot who rescued a baby cub and easily transported the mama bear, his sibling and him in his truck. They also investigate a corrupt police officer. All this is a typical day for the officers in Rockin.
Loved this quick yet highly entertaining action packed and thrillingly dangerous journey filled with such intriguing and engaging charters. Had me on the edge of my seat and excited for more.
This is a very light read and a little funny. We all know that there is no Big Foot, even though there has been many a tale! A new sheriff in town, in Alaska, who is slowly firing the corrupt police officers that worked under the old Sheriff, who was also corrupt.
I like the female officer Gabriella Donatti, tries to hide the fact there are some odd things about her Aunt and Uncle! Surprise there,
This was such a fun read! It's a stand alone Novella, but I would've loved if it were longer.
The story opens with Rockin, Alaska Police Department taking a call about a Bigfoot sighting. The town has been undergoing changes in the police department. Rodolphe Dumas, is the new police chief, coming in on the heels of the old corrupt chief. Chief Dumas has been doing a little housekeeping. New Officer Gabriella Donatti, the only female officer, draws the short end of the stick to check out the call. Her partner is out sick, so Chief Dumas rides along.
Dispatch alerts of another Bigfoot sighting. When Officer Donatti and Chief Dumas arrive at the location from the second call-in, they get quite the earful by a witness about bears, roars, & Bigfoot! When they arrive at the first location, before Chief Dumas finishes his investigation, he takes off in a hurry on a secret mission.
I think, my favorite part was the mama bear and her three cubs. This story is fast paced and filled with lots of humor, along with a mystery. Definitely, intriguing and left me wanting to learn more about the town and people!
I received a complimentary copy, and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.
I've been looking forward to reading Wrong Alibi , by Christina Dodd since I heard it was coming. Today I was able to visit Alaska and the start of the Murder in Alaska series with Right Motive. Right Motive is a Pre-quel of sort to Wrong Alibi. I'm even more excited now. I can't wait to see more of Chief Dumas and the Magnussons. Right Motive was a quick but exciting read and I'm already excited about the new characters from Right Motive. Right Motive I hope lays the foundation to another great story from Christina Dodd.
I love Christina Dodd’s books and this was no exception. While the book is rather short (it’s a novella), it is a good read. We see Gabriella and Dumas investigating some Big Foot sightings and Gabriella seems to know more about it than she lets on. We meet her Aunt and Uncle as well, as one of the sightings is at their house and I absolutely love these two and hope to see more of them in the future! This was a great, quick read and I highly recommend it!
Corruption, cleanup, family, rescue, mystery, revelation, and dinner; not necessarily in that order.
The only disappointment was not having more to read when I reached the last page way too soon. Yes, I know it's a novella. Anything written by Christina Dodd is worth the time, each one better than the one before. Hope to see more of this family soon. ♡♡♡
Christina Dodd is an author I stumbled upon last year and her work has consistently impressed and entertained me. I have the arc to the first book in her new series (this is labeled as book 0.5) and I am so excited to read it!
Read this novella, it is sooooo good! The characters, the storyline are wonderful and I cannot wait the novel with Rockin Alaska in it and I hope we will see a lot more of these characters in that book!
