No one believes in fairies until they're trying to burn your face off ...
My name's Flint. I'm a half-orc, a bodyguard, and a fair hand with a rifle. Back in the day, I fought in two wars. One was in uniform for good ole Uncle Sam. The other was under the banner of The Erlking - Iron Lord of goblins, half-bloods, and orcs.
Being a vet two times over never bothered me until one hell of a job dragged me out of the mortal world, and back to the land of Faerie. Now I've got to get my client over the US-Mexico border before the next best thing to a fairy goddess finds, enslaves, and kills us - though maybe not in that order.
Think I can make it past the elves, gunmen, and magical forces of nature standing in my way?
Carrie Protective Services by Robert McKinney is a story with orcs, far, and other creatures. A guy/part orc owns a protective service and gets a job to help a mortal for one day, but its to hide from the far. The story has some twists on the way. It's a short book and ends incomplete, must get next short book to read more. Its on KU so I don't mind and its just the right size book to read a bit before bed.
The writing isn't bad, and the action moves along to keep things interesting, but the idea that this is a book or a story is a bit ridiculous. We know almost nothing about the characters. We don't understand their motivations. The backstory for the MC is summarized in the book description and not elaborated much in the story. There is no narrative arc. The story is barely 100 pages. This is the first book in a 12 (so far) book series, and the author released the first six books in the same year. Why not combine them into one and have a full-length novel?
If you have Kindle Unlimited and you LOVE Harry Dresden, you can give this a shot, read the whole thing, and treat it like one big novel, but if not, I wouldn't spend the money.
This is a fun book if you go in thinking of it like a noir. It's very factual and to the point. Even the action scenes don't hold emotions, though he's telling you he's having them. Its a good short story, but not for me. The character development wasn't there. The plot was fine. Just a mini look into his protective services job. Tati was a fine client, but not memorial. This just isn't something I'm going to remember, unfortunately.
Let me start by saying the rating of 5 is so overused on things. In books to me there is 3 good, 4 should read 5 must read. This book was a 3. It started out Maltese Falcon then turned a bit into To Have and Have Not, but ending up more Romancing the Stone or VI Warshawski. This is a story that earns the teller his their drink and a meal and the chance for the same if they return the next night with a continuation of the saga.
Not bad for the first in a series. There is action and some world-building and a different slant on things than many other urban fantasies I've read. It is also pretty short at 72 pages. There isn't that much room for world building and it does end in a cliff hanger. Luckily, by the time I found this there were a number of books already published.
The ad compares this to Dresden. Not even close. Written on maybe a fourth grade level it is devoid of even basic descriptive language. Even the main character doesn’t describe himself physically. It reads more like an outline pitching the story, not a full fledged book.
I thought this story was good, but I did have some problems with it. I felt like it moved way too fast. And the plot was a little confusing. I wish there had been more detail on how earth and Faerie interacted. Were magic and fae well known? The idea of the book was good, but it could use some polish.
I was in the mood for something different, and across my social media feed came an advertisement for Robert McKinney’s Fairy Protective Services. It was priced at .99 cents, so I grabbed a copy.
Flint is a bodyguard who also happens to be a half-orc. He is a former soldier for The United States and for the Erlking in the Fae realm. He is hired to protect Tatiana, a woman on the run from a powerful fairy. This pretty much sums up the book.
As fantasy goes, it is okay. The pace of the book is fast (I knocked it out in less than 2 hours.) There is a pretty decent magic system. The action is fluid and satisfying, but I regret to say that is about all this book has going for it.
If you want a fast thinker that is a no-brainer to follow, this book is for you.
If you want an urban fantasy that makes you think, and sucks you into the story like it is a hostage situation, and at the end, you think “That was one hell of a ride!”, sadly this book is not for you.
I love finding new stories to read & this book blew me away. If you can keep up this quality of writing, I have no doubt you will be the next Jim Butcher!
It isn't often you see a story with an Orc or even a half Orc as the lead & you carried it was carried off very well! I also loved how the author brought the Fae into a more modern setting, it really ups the "oh shit" factor, because humanity's weapons were the only edge any non-powered individual really had against them.
I enjoyed that the Jeep was not built like a tank, but like an armored vehicle would be. I was saddened by its serious wounding, (I am a car guy) lol.
I am going to go buy the 2nd book now & I hope there is far more good books coming!
The concept for this book is fresh and having been in the military, I appreciate the way the protagonist seems to know about this.
The gist is that a half a blood orc who currently lives in the normal world and fought in the middle east and also who fought in the war in the land of fairy, has now retired from active service and opened a bodyguard service. Unfortunately, his newest client is not exactly telling the whole truth about who she is who she needs protection from.
Fun story, interesting characters and has potential. I appreciated the hero possessing more realistic internal / emotional responses to situations than how typical hero’s are portrayed. It kept my attention by wanting to read how he would push through fear, uncertainty, dire circumstances etc... I plan to give book 2 a try and see what happens since the character development I suspect will continue and only get better.
This is basically the first installment in an urban fantasy serial. It's the length of a novella, but I would not classify it as one. Honestly a pretty interesting approach to publishing. Anyways, I loved it! I'm a sucker for veterans as urban fantasy main characters, what can I say? The world building was an interesting take on Fae, which I found fresh and innovative in contrast to some others I have read.
This was a really fun book to introduce a series and universe. There was a lot of interesting action, the characters were detailed and their actions kept you glued to the pages. The only problem is the book ended sooner that I wanted since I was enjoying reading it. The good news though is there are other books in the series. So I recommend this book and hope the rest of the series is as fun to read.
I didn't realize how fast it went until they were were at the border, and then boom.... I'm giving my review . So far I'm getting a Fae Noir vibe ( which is fun. ) I like the different take on the Fae realm, you get tired of "good" faeries . When I finish this review I'm grabbing book two, I want to find out what 's next!
This is a nice afternoon read with lots of action and mystery. I can't wait to find out how the characters will mesh. There are some loose ends here !! I do have an issue - there are missing words in phrases throughout the book, obviously not enough to stop me from reading it, but they are obvious. Otherwise an enjoyable read.
It was interesting. I liked the magic system. I liked that there was no major info dump to slow the plot down. I was a little disappointed that the story stopped rather than ended. To get to the end of the story I will have to get the next book in the series. Not sure how much I liked that. But overall it was a quick, fun read.
This series has some good things going for it. Unfortunately, the author doesn't seem to understand the difference between a series and a serial. Cliff-hanger endings for chapters are great. For books, not so much. I like books that are complete in themselves, tying up enough loose ends for a satisfactory conclusion. It's also good to create such interesting characters and settings that the reader wants more. Just don't force the issue.
The story was okay, entertaining even. What I heartily object to is the total lack of closure, cutting off in the middle of things at 106 pages according to my kindle. The next 'installment' is fewer pages and $2.99. IF I catch them on a good sale maybe I'll pick up another, otherwise nope.
I really enjoyed this book. I would have liked a longer book with more Character info but I will be buying the next book to see where the story goes. Lots of action and excitement to look forward to!
OK, it's a homage to the fifties. But this is a hardboiled urban fantasy. With a ... well, call him the hero ... who makes the old PIs look like schoolboys. Its coming out more as chapters than whole novels, but that's Kindle for you. Anyway, I enjoyed it.
I enjoyed reading this but was astounded when it ended after 70 pages. This was really a novella, not a book, and since the author was planning a trilogy it seems all 3 together would make one book. Enjoyed the plot but it ended with no conclusion.
A PI in El Paso, Texas gets an interesting client. I think the world building is interesting and the magic system is really wild. Will definitely consider the next book.
Could have used a better editor, but if you can forgive that, give it a go. Its really short, only 72 pages long.
The cliffhanger was perfect! In hooked. Our main character Flint gives John Wick meets World of Warcraft orc plus some witness protection vibes. A human woman needs a bodyguard, and Flint is the man for the job.
I am a bit surprised at how much I liked this story, despite it being a cliffhanger. The main characters were well fleshed out, the premise is easy to understand, and the plot easily followed. I liked this story and I think you will, as well.
Lots of action. A bit confusing, as to the war, but it smooths out as you read more into the story. It ends in a cliffhanger, which I don't like. The story is intriguing and do so want to find out what happens next.
A crazy storyline that pulls you in after just a few pages with interesting characters that keep you turning pages just to find out what happens next. Lots of violence and magic an interesting first in series Baz.
It is riveting from the start! It is very well written, very descriptive, and very good at building suspense! I wasn't prepared for it to end. Im on to book two!
I rather enjoyed this book. I read it to my husband and kids on a trip back home. It was so nice to have a book we all enjoyed! Can't wait to start the next one and more from Robert.
Great characters. Great magic system so far. The fae war and politics are never dull. Cant wait for number two! If you are into Harry Dresden... Give this a go or two!
