Witch Reborn #1

Witch of a Godmother

Rate this book
The most powerful witches live more than one lifetime.

I've come to realize that now. The natural order of things is for a mother to raise her children. Not the other way around.

My new housemate Kimberly doesn't know yet what (or who) her newborn daughter is, but I do. I was there when she was born and shared a short soul-gaze with my own mother. Someday, I'll have to break the news to Kimberly, but not today.

Or this week, it looks like. Not with all the shenanigans going on in Wind's Crossing.

Who would have thought buying a simple desk at an estate auction would lead to so much trouble for my little shop? The break-ins ticked me off, but I could live with them. I had my own way of handling things like that.

But when the last break-in yielded a dead body? Well, a witch has to draw the line somewhere.

Besides, I'm a Ravenswind Witch and head priestess of the Gemstone Coven. We don't rest until justice is served. One way or another.

Witch of a Godmother is the first book in the Witch Reborn Series, a Paranormal Witch Cozy Mystery starring none other than Opal Ravenswind, witch extraordinaire. This series is the second series featuring the Gemstone Coven's witches. If you want to start at the very beginning, check out the Accidental Familiar Series.

Belinda lives in a tiny house fairly close to McCormick’s Creek State Park in Indiana. She shares her home with a German Shepherd. Please note that any and all resemblances to Tazlynn Hunt, the main character in The Benandanti series, is purely coincidental.

Belinda White is not, in fact, a werewolf. No really, she isn't...

Loved it

So glad to read more about Opal....
Opal finds herself in the thick of it when her business was broken into and the only thing damaged was an antique desk...
What was in that desk that was so important? That is what Opal needs to find out!
Great story and live the characters...

Belinda White wrote the Accidental Familiar series, which covered two generations of witches - cousins Amie and Ruby and their mothers Sapphire and Opal. That series was told from Amie's point of view. Witch Reborn is told from the formidable Opal's point of view and picks up a bit after the end of Accidental Familiar.

Slightly Rocky Start, But Liked It in the End

While I don’t appreciate information dumps in general, at least the author put it in a separate introduction. That's almost acceptable. ;-) I don't think I have read the series that this is an offshoot of (though I might have), or at least I don't remember Opal. She's a great character, though it took me a while to warm up to her. As someone who loves her family's antiques, including a cool old desk, I loved that the mystery revolves around what was happening to an antique desk that Opal got at an estate sale for her shop but ultimately decided to keep for herself. Someone breaks into her store and damages one of the drawers in it, obviously looking for something. Opal’s boyfriend is the local sheriff, though they are keeping it hidden because Opal believes it would hinder his next election if it got out that his lover is a witch. I thought they were cute and fun with their weekly non dates! I found this to be a fun, witchy paranormal cozy mystery.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Well so far I like this series more than the accidental familiar series, mostly due to the lead character. Amie is young, and naive, and just does not have the experience to make it all that interesting just yet. She’s also more self-involved than Opal. But that’s the way with young people, isn’t it?

However, I like Opal a lot. She’s sharp and quick, and she’s well settled into her power as a witch - meaning she doesn’t think about using it for every little thing. And as formidable as she is, she still a caring, kind, and compassionate woman who fiercely defends those she cares for.

That being said, while I like her relationship with the sheriff, can we please lay off the “my man this” and “my man that” all the time? It kind of ruins the pleasure of the read. (That was a problem with the other series too.)

But the story itself was decent - not a big thriller or twisty mystery, but logical enough with clues thrown in to keep you interested- even when there wasn’t really a surprise about the whodunnit. But sometimes a story is more about the whosolvedit instead.

Overall, I think I’d like to read more about Opal Ravenswind.

Loved Opal. Opal is infamous in the area. She is the High Priestess of the Gemstone Coven and favored by the Goddess. She is also kind and caring to those she loves and will put a spell on evil wrong doers. Not spells to kill but to make the culprit mighty uncomfortable. When she buys an old desk at a local estate sale her troubles start. Someone breaks into her shop and damages one of the drawers. Then they break in and try to steal a drawer, and later succeed. But she has already found what they were looking for and turned it over to her boyfriend, Sherriff Orvill. And now she is on the hunt for a thief, a murderer, and an heir to riches. Is it three different people, or one person? I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review

Opal is a witch. She's the head priestess of a coven has her own shop, has somebody breaking in to search through the desk, finds a dead body, senses her mother has been reborn in a new baby and, instead of having a cat as a familiar, has a macaw parrot.

That's all rather a bit for her to deal with. There's more break-ins, a car accident that just might have been a murder, a kidnapping and a marriage proposal.

That all makes for a pretty neat first book in a new series. The characters are interesting and it'll be fascinating to see what happens with the baby and what kind of familiar the macaw will turn out to be.

Opal is a witch and she bought at an auction a desk which is giving her lots of trouble. Not the desk per se but the fact that it is living in the backroom of her shop. Somebody is breaking into her shop and tries to steal: the middle drawer of that desk. What is so special about that drawer? Opal finds out that it contains a hidden compartment and somebody is desperate to find the envelope that hidden there together with some journals. When the thief comes back and actually steals the middle drawer on the other side Opal is getting mad and sets together with her sister a spell up to catch the thief in the act. Murder and mayhem to follow.

A Full House again

Now that Opal has her new daughter Nancy as well as new friend Kimberly with her two children living at the farmhouse, life is anything but quiet. As if that was not enough, her business brings a new mystery to light when she acquires a beautiful antique desk at an estate sale. Between solving the mystery and dealing with the various characters caught up in the story, Opal makes some more life-long connections she did not expect. A great start to a new series!

As a fan of cozy mysteries with supernatural or witch characters, I really liked this one. In the best of traditions, it doesn't treat witches as people who can make the whole world go their way; it treats them as people.

Opal is people. A little too gushy about "her man" for my tastes, but okay.

This felt like a Book 2. That's not a bad thing. The reader knows there's a backstory, but it comes out slowly, and with the exception of the first couple of pages, doesn't bother going over the history. Nor does it need to. This stands alone.

I liked it as an afternoon read. Not sure I'll bother with the rest of the series.

A Series of Must Must Reads

I am so hooked on all of the books by Belinda White and can't put them down. Seriously, I haven't slept in days because I can't stop reading them. I have rarely ever came across such a captivating set of series of books that hold my attention and honestly soul as I have in these books. Belinda White has become my new favorite author and I couldn't be happier to recommend that you and everyone else in the world read everything she puts on paper. Absolutely amazing reading, you will not be disappointed.

I rounded up from 2.5 stars. The first half of the book was very frustrating for me as the 'action' was taking place in the form of the lead thinking - not a lot of real interaction with the other characters. Also, this is my first book in this world, and even though this is a #1 in a series, it's seems assumed that you've read the companion series. Much was hinted in terms of history, but the backstory wasn't explained. So, for a super lightweight, cozy story with magic - it was alright, but it's not my cup of tea.

Once again Opal is in the middle of a mystery. And she would have never gotten involved without destruction of the antique shop's property. I enjoy the family ties and the strong tendency to do what is right. But sometimes Opal's pride is stronger than the story and her reluctance to commit to the Sheriff drives me a little crazy. She claims it's because she doesn't want a negative influence on the next Sheriff's election, but if he continues with the Sheriff's office that will be the same for every election.

Great story!
I love stories like this that have "meat on their bones". A well-rounded story with a strong storyline is harder and harder to find these days. This is fast-paced and well written. I was pulled in from the first sentence and the story took off like a wildfire! I can't wait to read more in this series!

I loved this story. I had wanted a interpersonal view of these people than the Accidental tried provided. Now I am really awaiting both series updates. I have such warm feelings for this incredible family dynamic. More please write fast, I can hardly wait

Hard Shell

Opal has been one of my favorite characters since the first book. Ruby and Destiny are still my favorite. I’m glad Opal got her own story and not as a murder suspect! She does seem to attract a lot of trouble though. Glad she found a guy to help her get out of all that trouble.

Great plot

This as with all the other books I've read featuring the Gemstone coven are addictive. I do hope that Opal can get past her narrow mindedness and self-esteem issues regarding happiness. Her being a high priestess contradicts with her view of her relationship or reluctance to develop one and how she views the relationship of family members.

Good Witch, Bad Witch

I have to say that I really enjoyed this first in a series book. Opal is my kind of gal. Loving, caring, family oriented, and dies not tolerate fools or scoundrels. And she sure knows how to take care of them. Orville may be the sheriff, but Opal us a law into herself. If you enjoy a good clean mystery with just a bit of magic, you will enjoy this book.

Twitchy murder mystery

Got a little much with her calling the sheriff her man all the time. No indicated in if Maude would be indicated or if Malcom was murdered. Lots of missing background that was spoken as if the reader would know it but this is the first book? Big lead in on something with the doll but no follow through and how did the doll get downstairs? With no answers

I read the Accidental Familiar Series first and loved it! So I kept going with this one and wasn’t disappointed. My big problem is as I look at the dates of the books written of this series and the Gemstone Series it seems that they were written at the same time. I can’t find a reading order anywhere.

magical mayhem

A fantastic fun adventure with a cast of wacky characters. Throw in a witch or two and magical mayhem begins. Cute kids including a special baby girl, an awesome familiar, a witch and her sheriff boyfriend of course evil villains. Murder, attempted murder, lots of malicious intent! Will justice be serve?

Sweet story

I really enjoyed it and the surprise ending is priceless, although I probably shouldn't have been surprised. Regardless, I highly recommend the start to the new spin-off series.

Godmother status

A fun beginning to Opal’s story. This series begins where the Accidental Familiar series leaves off. I was hoping for a little more background information on Opal and some of the characters. A light, fun book.

These books give me such good feels!

I really am enjoying these books. Opal is becoming my favorite too. She’s crusty on the outside but a big gooey heart on the inside. I definitely wouldn’t want to get any bad karma from her.
