Supernatural Prison Squad #1

Darkblood Prison: Demon on a Dime

Rate this book
Welcome to Darkblood Prison, where the worst criminals in the supernatural realm roam the murky corridors, A.K.A. my new home.

According to my cellmate, there are three rules to survive the notorious prison:

Don’t mix with the other supes, stick to your own kind.
Anything can be made into a weapon so get creative.
Stay away from the infamous Triad, the three brothers who run the prison.
Rules aren’t really my thing so I doubt I’ll survive my first week, let alone my ten-year sentence for soul sucking an entire Fae village I have no memory of.

As if coming to terms with my own demon and making nice with the scary inmates wasn’t bad enough, someone seems hellbent on permanently ending my stay at Darkblood. Thankfully, the devastatingly gorgeous and equally infuriating leader of the Triad, who hates me for no apparent reason, still manages to show up whenever I get into trouble.

With his help, I begin to piece together my missing memories and discover there’s much more to my bogus incarceration. There’s a reason I was sent here, a dark family secret is coming back to haunt me.

As it turns out, the baddies in this prison are nothing compared to the forces of the Underworld that are coming for me.

G.K. DeRosa

G.K. De Rosa has been an avid reader from a very young age. In fact, before she could even read, she tried fooling everyone into thinking that she could. At the precocious age of two, while living in Italy, she had memorized an entire children’s book in Italian and expertly turned the pages at the exact right moments of the story. As she grew up, she always enjoyed literature, no doubt having been instilled with a love of story telling from her early years in Catholic school where she was greatly influenced by exemplary teachers who taught her the value of English and Literature. Though she did not pursue writing in college and instead went for the more traditional route of International Business inspired by her love for travel and all things foreign, after a move to New York City, she found her creative writing side calling once again. She began writing a restaurant review blog, City Lights and Tasty Bites, detailing her other passion – food! The hectic hustle and bustle of the city, combined with long commuting times gave her the opportunity to spend more time reading and rekindled a lost love. After reading countless books in many diverse genres over the two years in New York City, and returning to her home state of Florida, she felt compelled to write something for herself. She had always felt particularly drawn to Young Adult novels and having been an eternal romantic at heart, a fantasy romance was a natural choice. She currently lives in South Florida with her real life Prince Charming and their fur baby, Nico the German Shepherd.

My first fantasy prison romance, and I loved it.

This book follows Ryder and Luna's daughter, Azara, as she navigates her way at Darkblood Prison. She has been sent there for a mass slaughter, when she lost control of her demon, but her memories are murky and she can't remember much. During prison, she meets other inmates and develop relationships as she pieces together what she did and what happened and the secrets people around her are keeping.

So what did I love about it?

I don't know if it's the setting, or Azara as a whole, or the amazing love interest Talon. This book was just great for me. A romance that's not insta-love, has enemies to lovers vibes but not too overdone. The setting was exhilarating and exciting, and filled with mystique and danger. Emotions really came through as well, about Azara's guilt over her supposed crime and her complicated relationship with Talon that she clearly doesn't understand but we all know something else is at play here.

Would highly recommend if you love a good slow-burn romance (but not frustrating), fantasy, and lots of mystery and danger.

I think the only thing I enjoyed about this one was the originality. The story was definitely unique. I’ll give the author that. Other than that it was incredibly unrealistic and cheesy.

The characters don’t act their own age. They act like they are all fresh teens, not adults. And GOOD GOD with the eye rolls! I wanna slap that stupid action right out of her head. I swear she rolled her eyes every 2 pages (if she could last that long).

There was not enough description. It’s hard to create a world in my mind when locations and people are not described in detail.

Acronyms used numerous times without saying what they are referring to. I don’t think it was explained until about 75% of the way through the book what SIA stood for.

Azara can be a whiny baby most of the time. If she doesn’t get her way she throws a fit. Not cute.

The reluctance to swear in an adult book brings back the age issue. Things like Shitzu and AF, sound ridiculous in a book like this. If you’re going to play the game, bring it home because this half-assed shit doesn’t fly. See? Wasn’t so hard...

Too predictable. The shady behavior and privileges give way too much away. Be more subtle when laying ground work. I don’t even need to read the rest of the series to figure out the rest of the secrets, everything is laid pretty damn bare early on without meaning to.

Just like the acronyms, prophesies were referred to as if we knew what they were... we did not, in case you were wondering. Nothing was explained until (you guessed it) near the end of the book.

Talon pulled a complete 180 at the end toward Azara simply because of a hint of explanation, not even certainty. He acted like all of a sudden she was completely trustworthy and he could bare his soul to her because he heard a rumor, I mean.... That easy, huh?

All in all, the idea was better than the book. Sorry.

Read this in one sitting! I was so excited to be back in the world of Azar, and when I found out G.K. DeRosa had another series in this paranormal world, I danced with joy. 💃

This is the first G.K. DeRosa enemies-to-lovers book that I have read and it did not disappoint! When Azara wakes up in a cell with three of the deadliest criminals, she is shocked to learn she might just deserve to be locked away with the worst of them.

To make matters worse, the leader of the trio, aka the Triade, hates her for reasons she doesn't understand. As she tries to learn how to survive in this supernatural prison and who to trust, Azara also tries to piece together the horrible night that landed her in this cell.

The attraction and hatred brewing between Azara and the hot AF Talon, had me rooting for the two. I'm also dying to see what type of reactions Talon and the Triade will have when they finally realize who Azara is related to (Esp. her dad and her uncle).

A random note but something that I don't feel should be overlooked... I LOVE FLIX!! He is a pink haired pixie with a quick witted attitude and a soft spot for hot and powerful males. That has me hoping Flix finds a sexy alpha male (esp. one of the Triad members) who starts to shower him with attention.
**Cough cough** Genevieve please give my Flix bae a hot boy filled with love. Please!! #EveryoneNeedsLove.

Overall this was a fun, fast read that already has me needing book 2.

I would say this book is an Upper YA read that might heat up as the series progresses.
Also this is not a Reverse Harem.

*SPOILER FREE REVIEW* For readers of Hitched and Darkblood Academy, and those that are yet to discover them, comes a new series from the same world. Let me tell you, it does not disappoint! From the first few pages you knew that this was not a straight forward story at all. It takes us some time to learn what exactly had happened for Azara to find herself in the supernatural prison, where only the worst of the worst go. I was a little impatient (admittedly) in getting to the heart of the story. That said, it sure had me hooked with the action (and attraction, ahem!), that I just could not put the book down. I have to say that on a personal level, I would not have minded if this turned out as an RH (it's not, just mho), since oh my goodness why do they always have to be such hunks? The author has a way of hooking you and reeling you in till the very last page, building up to that action and keeping you in a state of anticipation. Characters are well written and I look really forward to discovering more about each of them in the next books. Recommend this for YA and NA readers.

Wow !! Not only was I completely hooked throughout this whole book, I will admit the salivating over the triad, did get a little to much at times :). In its own right the storyline was full of intensity & anxiety for our new m/c characters Azara, Talon, Hayden & Dallas but what do you expect in a prison !! Especially when you suddenly become part of a gang war with the delightful Delacroix !! I loved hearing about old characters from G.K.DeRosa’s series ranging from Hitched & throughout Darkblood Academy plus more and how life had moved on for them. So the new warden was a great surprise. Anyway back to Darkblood Prison, Azara is under a charge she believes she should pay for, but she know’s she needs to be a badass and she does a great job of it, but having to fight for her life and her cell mates wasn’t part of the plan. Along with the mystery of her cell mates and the lies she knows are underlying everything they do and an attraction that is so strong and unwanted, she is certainly being made to pay in Darkblood Prison. There is so much more I want to rave about but that will spoil it for you. G.K.Derosa is an author that always overwhelm’s & astonish’s me with such wonder & surprise when she produces another fascinating, incredible new series. Her well of artistry, ingenuity & skill never seems to run dry but keeps expanding more and more. She has become one of my favourite authors who can write fantasy with such realistic characters, thoughts & new worlds that I have never questioned my surroundings as I am drawn into everyone of her books and my reality quickly changes until the very last word, when I’m always left wanting more.

This is a high octane read which will pull you in within the first chapter! I feel confident that this new series will be a hit with readers who get to know the characters portrayed therein even the villains who you will love to hate!!

I recommend this book to both the young adult and adult audiences who are looking for a book they can get into and that will hold their attention throughout with a hook at the end that will have them anxiously awaiting the next book in the series to find out what happens next!!

If you’re looking at what you can do during this lockdown which is shaping up again in this troubled country why not pick up a good book and get involved in the lives of the characters who you will soon call your friends. With the vivid descriptions you will feel you are right there as scenes are unfolded in front of your eyes!

Kudos G. K. De Rosa for crafting a book which will excite all who read it! Be sure to put it on your list of books to read right away because believe me it is that good!! I am in that group who are now hooked and need the next book to come out to satisfy my craving to return to Dark Blood Prison to see what happens next!! I invite you to join me!

I am a huge fan of G.K. DeRosa’s works, so I was not surprised one bit that I absolutely loved Darkblood Prison: Demon on a Dime just as much as the books before it. Although this book is set in the same universe as DeRosa’s Hitched, Darkblood Academy, and Royally Hitched you don’t necessarily have to read those first to enjoy this one—but I would because they’re awesome.

Darkblood Prison revolves around Azara, a half-blood who gets tossed into prison for a terrible crime she doesn’t remember committing, but feels the guilt for it all the same. To make matters worse she’s dumped into a cell with two beefy dudes, one of which appears to hate her from the get go. Throw in a scary demon with ulterior motives, unexplained powers, a few death threats, and Azara finds herself in the middle of a mystery she needs to figure out—a mystery that seems to be centered around her.

This book sucked me in from the get go and had everything to keep me turning the pages. Feisty heroine. Check. Brooding hot guy with secrets. Check. Twist, turns, and a mystery to unravel. Check. I can’t wait to find out what happens in book two!

I loved this book!

I always loved Luna and Ryder, but honestly Azara is my new fave in the DeRosa world. Her attitude and personality are amazing. I love the dynamics of the Triad. nd I love Flix and Logan's contributions to the story as well. This story starts and ends in a way that leaves you needing more. It's everything I've come to expect and more from this author and I can't wait to see what's next!

This well-written storyline is the start of a new series and it promises to be a good one. The main characters are defined, stubborn, not as they seem, sexy, and have powers and chemistry. There are unusual activities, attraction, plotting, drama, mystery, and danger. I enjoyed this well-written, entertaining read. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.

Another great series from one of my favorite authors! This is the fourth series set in the same world, and I couldn’t be happier that this one stars the grown-up daughter of Ryder and Luna from Darkblood Academy. Azara has committed a terrible crime (very similar to what her father did years ago), and she’s been sentenced to the dangerous Darkblood Prison. She’s tossed into a cell with the Triad, and the leader, Talon, isn’t too pleased with her presence. If you like mystery, shmexy supernaturals, and a feisty heroine, definitely read this book! I need the next one ASAP! I’m already addicted.

Azara has no memory of the murders she is accused of. That doesn't stop her from being sent to Darkblood Prison. Her cell mates are male, a dragon shifter and a fallen angel, and no privacy. But things may not be as they seem, especially considering who Azaras 's family is... Great read, with plenty of action, and twists. I love how previous series characters are mentioned, from the Supe Squad to the Hitched series, but not required to enjoy this one!

I loved this so much! A great new series set in the Hitched universe, G.K. DeRosa's world building skills shine again as we get sucked into Darkblood Prison and the mysteries that reside there. I had a hard time putting this one down. You don't have to read Hitched, Darkblood Academy, and Royally Hitched to fully enjoy this one, but I'd highly recommend you read them...they're all so good.

Azara is the daughter of Ryder and Luna from another series by the author so there is crossover from the other series based in this world which I absolutely loved! The author has created a world that could provide years of fantastic stories and I would gobble every single one of them up. Azara finds herself in lockup after being accused of letting her demon run amuck, but she has no recollection of it. She has some pretty big bads gunning for her and she also has some pretty big guys willing to grudgingly step up and help her. This book captivated from the start and I can't wait for more. I volunteered to read this book.

TSTL main character and messaging issues

This is definitely a trope-y series. Young woman finds herself in trouble and rescued by three hot guys, one of whom she has a deeper connection to. He thinks she's an idiot but hot, the other two thing she walks on water, and she's a special little snowflake.

Frankly, this type of series doesn't even feel like its trying. The MC has TSTL nailed. Literally runs toward danger she knows can get her killed or worse, because it already has tried to, but she's special so it'll work out. She nearly gets raped a couple of times, she nearly gets beaten up a couple of times, and the woman is in prison so you'd think common sense would kick in and shed wake the f up to reality. But no. Endless stupid antics ensue from which she has to be constantly rescued. Cherry on top she passes out a couple times like a true damsel and has to be carried to safety.

As a character, she's a bimbo that has some sass but literally no common sense or brains. Honestly, she's an emotional twit running around like a child and expecting to be saved. To say this characterization of young women is disturbing is the bare minimum of it. I cannot understand why anyone wants to portray women like this. We have enough challenges in the world. Why do we need to create this one in books we read? We are just reinforcing views on women that are millennia old and not only offensive, but wrong. I don't care hoe much power she has, if she's portrayed acting like a child then you haven't created an independent female character; you have just created a weak character with power. I'm not sure what I am supposed to like about such a character.

So clearly, serious messaging issues in this book IMO. I would not recommend on that alone. However, I will also note the book suffers from paper thin side characters and an unfocused plot line. What a disappointment.

This book is… so cheesy. I can't. I couldn't take any of the characters seriously, which made it really hard to take anything that happened in the book seriously.

To put it bluntly, Azara is annoying and dumb, and it feels like she's this way purposely. She runs into danger without even thinking about the ramifications, with zero plan and no care in the world. I know this is a fantasy book, but it's too unbelievable, ridiculous, and completely over the top.

The men in her life are absolutely typical, and I found myself uttering the words “of course” more than once when each character came into the story. You know what I mean, angry brooding, handsome man, funny comedic relief, gay best friend. It feels like DeRosa didn't even try here.

I keep trying with DeRosa, but it keeps falling flat for me. Here's me just trying to get back to the days of Hitched and getting knocked to the ground. Again.

This story is about Azara, the daughter of Ryder and Luna, from one of my all-time favorite series. I was SO excited to learn that Azara would be getting her own series. This first book did not disappoint!!

The character building and world building is one of the things I love so much about DeRosa's books. It always draws me in and I can't stop reading. Azar was the first world I was introduced to by this author, so it has a special place in my heart.

This was a wonderful read and I am so eager for more from DeRosa and Azara!

If you disappeared from your family, who cared about you, for ten years, do you think they'd notice? How Azara thought that they wouldn't is strange. And each time something unusual or noteworthy happened she did not try to help herself by using her resources. She just either blew it off or hid it. I have not read any of the previous series so do not have a connection to this family of characters.

Have I mentioned I have become addicted to books by G.K. DeRosa? Yes? Well the addiction lives on. I thought I had read all of her books by now, however imagine my deep joy when browsing Amazon I found this set that I somehow missed earlier.

On Saturday night I started book one, and was hooked again. The Darkblood Prison is where all the bad supes go, there they serve their terms for the crimes committed and many of them are really nasty criminals. Each type of supernatural generally keep to themselves and are kept in separate wings, such as Demons, Vampires, Fae, Shifters, Dragons etc. They do mingle at meal times and during recreation time.

Azara is a half-blood, the daughter of a female warlock and a demon father. She awakes in a cell in the notorious Darkblood Prison, not knowing why she is there. Then discovers she has been charged with mass slaughter in a fae village, however she remembers nothing of her crime but still feels the guilt. She takes a look around her cell and finds she is sharing with two, very large, good looking, sexy men. Talon is a Dragon, Hayden a fallen angel and in the next cell Dallas a very sexy vampire (aren't they all?). These three form a Triad, a brotherhood who sort of run the prison, informally.
But why has she been put in there, why is she not with the demons or the witches? It will all become clearer as you read on.

Intially the brothers hate her because of the crime she has allegedly committed, but she worms her way into their affections, especially Talon as he has been appointed her unofficial bodyguard by the prisoner, a gargoyle who is a friend of her parents.

She also manages to make friends with a pink haired, gay fae, and he helps her negotiate some of the prison life.

There are three basic rules to this vile prison. Don't mix with other supes, stick to your own kind. Anything can be used as a weapon so get creative, and stay away from the Triad, all of which she quickly breaks.

I read this on one night and went onto the second book straight away

Azara groggily became aware but had no memory of the murders she is accused of. She felt the handcuffs they had on her leeching the power right out of her! And the dragon guards with partially shifted claws held her arms really tight as they dragged her on the steps on the side of the mountain. At the top step, she looked up and saw Darkblood Prison on the wrought iron gate! She stopped in shock to see the notorious prison that both supernatural and human prisoners feared. Only the worst and most powerful bad guys came here. Even not remembering what she had done, she could not have deserved this fate. Nor would the dragons tell her what she had done. When they get a phonecall from someone, one of the dragons throws her against the wall. One of their own who had tangled with her had just died. She would pay for that. Now four dragon guards surrounded her and they carried heavy iron chains and manacles. She struggled, but they injected her with something and she sunk into blackness.

Apparently the VIP cell the guards referred to was already occupied by the Triad, and the leader, Talon, was not happy to share. But strangely enough, although Azara has enemies inside here who want to see her dead, she also finds that others, ones she would never expect, are somehow willing to grudgingly step up and help her. Who has set her up? And why? She is sure she didn’t do what they accused her of. If only she could remember . . .

This was an intriguing and exciting story. The reader was given hints but didn’t find out the full extent of her crimes as that information came gradually where the reader learns things at the same time that Azara does. It’s a good technique that keeps the reader on edge and invested fully in the story. Grab your coy and start this adventure with Azara. There is much more at play here to be discovered and you won’t want to miss a single page!

Azara is the daughter of two of my favorite characters: Ryder and Luna. When her demon breaks lose on a soul-sucking bender, Azara is caught and thrown into Darkblood Prison. The only problem is she can't remember what she did to land herself in prison. Add a brooding dragon to the mix and things can get a bit complicated.

At Darkblood Prison, Azara is forced to bunk with two members of the famous Triad that runs the prison. All three of them are gorgeous but nobody wants to give her the answers she's looking for. She did something really bad to land herself in a cell, but somehow, she's personally offended the dragon Talon. Not wanting to get her parents involved, Azara knows only she can find out the true reason she's in prison and get the help that she needs.

With DARKBLOOD PRISON, G.K. DeRosa delivers another spellbinding book that I didn't stop reading until I finished. Who needs sleep when there's an amazing new series calling to you? I love Ryder and Luna so it was fascinating following their daughter. Azara is a strong character and I love how she's willing to seek help if she needs it. She's strong enough to want to atone for her mistakes.

Then, there's Talon. Talon is so sexy and I love the push and pull he has with Azara. The tension between them could be felt through the pages of my book and I loved every second of it. Talon seems like a brute, but as the reader, we can see that there's so much more to him. He's loyal and isn't afraid to stand up for what's right. So how could someone as perfect as him land himself in Darkblood Prison?

This is definitely one series fans of G.K. DeRosa won't want to miss. The world she's created is both enchanting and dark and I love little Easter Eggs from her previous series she likes to leave us. Well, I'm off to start and probably finish the second one.

Absolutely brilliant! Honestly I was hooked and couldn’t step away. I was lucky enough to be gifted the audio version of this amazing story in return for a non biased review. This is book 1 in the Supernatural Prison Squad series by GK DeRosa. Four of the books are all available on Kindle Unlimited so I urge you to check them out. Although I thoroughly recommend the audible version of book 1 as it was wonderfully narrated by Jess Trepanier.
MC Azara who is half soul sucking demon and granddaughter of the infamous Lucifer (aka Lucy) finds herself in prison for a crime she has no memory of committing. She wakes up to find she is sharing a cell with 2 supernatural alpha male criminals. One fallen Angel and one Dragon shifter. These guys are part of the very scary Triad who all the other prisoners are terrified of. Talon the dragon shifter hates her with good reason if the crimes she committed are to be believed as she learns not only did she kill an entire Fae village but someone close to him you with find out more about as the story goes on. Who doesn’t love an enemies to lovers story? Well you have a brilliant one here. Sparks fly with this pair and the chemistry is off the charts with the love hate dynamics.
This is a great story with loads of twists and turns and what did happen the night Azara has no memory off? You are kept guessing and the plot constantly has you on the edge of your seat! Also what an end!!! I can’t wait to see where this story goes.
This is my first book by GK DeRosa and it won’t be my last. Top marks 5/5
