Researching John Knowles was very helpful to me when reading A SEPARATE PEACE. I found the topics and points of view in A SEPARATE PEACE very peculiar, and knowing everything I did about Knowles, (such as he lived around the WW2 period), assisted me in analyzing and understanding his writing. I think Knowles did a good job developing the characters, but he didn't keep some of the personalities constant throughout the book. For example, Phineas started out as an elitely athletic and friendly guy, but as the story went on he turned into a hot pessimistic mess! I had trouble believing everything Knowles wrote, as some statements contradicted others.
I suppose this was well written, but all I can remember is that I read it in the 8th grade and I hated it. It is a story of a guy that betrays his best friend and then his friend dies because of it. He is a horrible protagonist with no moral fiber that is meant to learn through his mistakes, but I still hate him. I would never read this to a class.
I read this because Mary had to read it for her honors English class. I didn't like the protagonist at all. It was all in all a very tragic story. I know it's a classic and that most kids read it in school, but I think there are better things out there to study.
Ok, I probably am too old to read this book and a not male but it was not as rich as I thought it would be. Suffice to say, it was the prime of miss jean brody but the male version. A few nuanced differences but same story line but a New England Prep school.
