Waylon Jenkins can't die. He also can't let Dr. Samuel Early, his only hope of dying, go off on a mission to rescue a disembodied zombie in the heart of a Central American jungle without him. But even this skilled cosmetologist to the stars isn't fully prepared to blend-blend-blend himself into a convincing member of a strike team, not when his first instincts are to give moisturizer recommendations to sunburned vacationers.
As they delve into the jungle, they uncover a much bigger problem than the drug cartels. Someone is after Rodrigo Flores and his family and it's personal. The only way to help the family get through it alive to help his daughter, Amalia, win the Miss Mango Pageant. Will Waylon's skills and his famous friend and client, Mitzi (one name only), be the team's secret weapon?
Can Waylon get through it without breaking his vow never to make a zombie?
And who is the mysterious Señor Cinco that seems to be behind it all?
Hold on to your butt paste. This is going to get wild.
J.D. Blackrose loves all things storytelling and celebrates great writing by posting about it on her website, www.slipperywords.com. She has published The Soul Wars series and the Monster Hunter Mom series, both through Falstaff Books, as well as numerous short stories.
When not writing, Blackrose lives with three children, an orange cat, her husband and a full-time job in Corporate Communications. She’s fearful that so-called normal people will discover exactly how often she thinks about wicked fairies, nasty wizards, homicidal elevators, treacherous forests, and the odd murder, even when she is supposed to be having coffee with a friend. As a survival tactic, she has mastered the art of looking interested. She credits her parents for teaching her how to ask questions, and in lieu of facts, how to make up answers.
This book is just as delightful as the first, maybe moreso. A lot was packed into this one and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. I love Waylon and crew so much!
Full of surprising turns and twists this story kept my attention from being to end. Peppered with lots of action, bad guys and good guys pulling the drop on each other. As well as beauty contestants singing, doing gymnastics, and other talented things. I never knew what to expect. Except for the zombies. But you never know what body part might need to be replaced. Light-hearted humor flavors this book perfectly. I look forward to reading more by this author.
What happens when a cosmetologist finds themselves tangled up with a military unit on a rescue mission? Absolute chaos—in the best possible way. This book throws our unlikely hero straight into the middle of both a drug war and a beauty pageant, and the result is just as wild and hilarious as it sounds. The blend of high-stakes danger and ridiculous scenarios makes for a story that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but still keeps you hooked from start to finish.
This second installment in the Zombie Cosmetologist series carries all the outrageous energy of book one and doubles down on the absurd fun. It’s the kind of book that leans into its over-the-top premise and delivers exactly what fans are hoping for—laughs, action, and pure entertainment. I had such a great time with this one and can’t wait to see what book three has in store!
Waylon, cosmetologist to the Stars by trade and zombie by reanimation, has agreed to aid the military team which got his house destroyed last novella rescue the one they left behind. So off he goes to the jungle, fighting bugs and sunlight, suffering through a cruise, and discovering a beauty contest.
At last, something he was VERY familiar with. Now all he had to do is survive being blown up, again, and getting a evening dress for the contestant he is helping.
Mascara should help.
The book, as with everything in this series, is a wonderful combination of urban fantasy parody and amazing characters in an action-adventure.
An excellent follow up to first novella, taking Waylon and his fellow zombies south of the border on a rescue mission to recover a fallen comrade. Along the way, they get mixed up in drug running and a beauty pageant.
I read the two novellas practically back to back, and still really enjoy the concept and the characters. Waylon's use of his cosmetology skills to help the young potential beauty queen made a heart warming story line, and I'm always a sucker for an accidental hero character like Waylon.
There's a lot I'm still curious about though, so I'm hoping Blackrose will release more in the series soon.
The crew heads off to the jungle to find their fallen buddy. They have all learned that a zombie cannot actually die. Their bodies can be destroyed but their essence stays attached to earth. They are close to finding their friend when they are captured. Turns out the two groups can help each other – and who doesn’t love when an underdog enters the local pageant! Story took some twists and turns and keep me reading.
This was a pretty good follow up from the first book. It had the humor like the first which was appreciated. There was a moment at the end where for a second I wondered why they didn’t take some decisive lethal action but realized that’s probably because the series continues. Now I needed to see what direction the team heads in next.
Hide & Chic by JD Blackrose is such a fun and original read. I mean, a zombie cosmetologist? I loved the mix of quirky mysteries, supernatural twists, and all the hilarious trouble he finds himself in. It’s clever, lighthearted, and totally one of a kind.
With Waylon’s intel they squad of military zombies start on a mission. There is danger at every turn. But woven through the danger is humor while working on a beauty pageant. Another great episode in the world of a zombie cosmologist. #CMCon26
Waylon Jenkins is a zombie and the thing about being a zombie is, they don’t die. They do have to sometimes replace body parts though. Ewww. Anyway, Waylon is also a fairly famous cosmetologist. So skilled he works with Hollywood stars. So what is he doing joining a strike team going to the Central American jungle to rescue a disembodied zombie? Good question.
When Dr. Samuel Early (who brought back Waylon as a zombie) realizes a zombie has been left behind during a military mission he insists they need to go back and rescue him. Because a zombie can’t die. Even if a tiny piece exists the soul stays attached to it and the person is left stranded. Since Early is Waylon’s ticket to dying there’s no way he’s letting the good doctor go traipsing off to who knows where into who knows what kind of danger. And that’s where the fun begins.
This is a humorous story about zombies, military buddies, and a cosmetologist who never gives up. It is not a deep read. It’s purely entertainment so suspend your disbelief and leave logic at the door and you should be just fine.
