No one said being a wizard in Manhattan would be easy. No one warned me that everyone would be trying to kill me either.
Things were going so well. I had a perfect girlfriend, a magical mentor, and had even learned to use magic without catching anything on fire. Sure, a demon squirrel mauled me a bit, and maybe I was living in a linoleum-filled den of despair, but compared to fleeing from death, life was really good. Then the Ladies, fate, and a lunch bag full of cash yanked the quiet life out from under my feet. Now the only chance of survival my friends and I have involves blood, lies, and breaking and entering.
If we survive this, I’m going to need a lot of therapy.

Another Fun, Magic Filled Jaunt Around NYC!!😂💥🔥💀👻,
Bryant is chasing magically enhanced animals in Central Park on our return to his world! Eric has him clearing up his magical messes from a couple of months before, when he first discovered he was a Wizard, and some of his spells went wrong!!😳
Eric is trying to mitigate the damage that the 'The Ladies' can come after them for. Getting Bryant to clean up his mistakes is a big part of that!👍 Unfortunately Fate, Parents and a dinner lady have other ideas 😳 The beginning of their group's possible end is set in motion 😱
A battle against a new Evil is now on the cards as well as the potential for their end 😭 With Elizabeth & Devon in his corner, along with Eric as his Magical mentor, Bryant hopes to survive the next few days, hopefully!!👌🍀
I giggled throughout reading this book! Bryant is funny even when he really isn't trying 😂 Devon's humour is first class too. I love their friendship although I'd really like to know more about why Devon's parent's aren't good one's to him 😢 Elizabeth is a rock for Bryant again, he does get to be her hero and shoulder to lean on too 👍 Eric is mellower than in book 1 but his sometimes careless attitude towards their lives is alarming & really seems to upset Devon!!😕
A highly recommended read for anyone 12+ - any age (I'm currently 48 😂) Full of magical mayhem & giggles with hearts in their eyes romance (only) and plenty of magical fights, it's a bit like a more blood & guts version of HP but funnier & grittier. A magical 4 Stars 🌟
Magic, adventure, humor and evil lurking in...it seems...every shadow, this is a fun read packed full of thrilling adventure.
After winning an impossible battle, Bryant's now stuck with cleaning up his mess and chasing down the last animals he accidentally changed with his magic. But mutated squirrels in New York aren't easy to find. Mix that with trying to keep his mom happy, and it's a stupid dance which makes normal teenage life look easy. But things are about to get worse. The Ladies are determined to destroy Bryant and don't need much of an excuse to come after him. It's going to take more than a little magic to keep him and his friends alive.
I did read the first book in this series, enjoyed it, and while I would highly recommend starting at the beginning of the series (since the story grows from book to book), it isn't impossible to start with this one.
This is a wonderful mix of fast-paced action, magical spells, fight scenes, teenage romance, and humor slipped in at every turn. It's an easy read, and one that doesn't let go, making it hard to put down. Bryant runs up against new obstacles the entire way through, the intrigue and danger growing with every twist and turn. Of course, his friends never waver from his side and add the right spice at the right moments. Bryant's own insecurities sometimes get the better of him, but his friends are true blue and form the best foundation a guy could have. Each has their strengths and weaknesses, and use exactly this to work together.
The uncertainties of the characters reflects the age group nicely. They don't know everything and make mistakes, have doubt and make many bad decisions. They are believable, even on the romance end. The romance isn't only sugar and spice but has a solid base in the realm of friendship and goes from there.
This is a fun read YA wizard fans are sure to enjoy, and I can't wait to see where it all goes next.
I received an ARC copy from the author and enjoyed every moment of this story, so I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.
This Is A Better Book If You've Already Read the First Book
This is the sequel to "How I Magically Messed Up My Life in Four Freakin' Days". I was a big fan of that first book. I enjoyed the characters, the premise, the plot, and especially the whip smart dialogue and the rueful and deadpan narration provided by our hero, Bryant.
But here's the thing. The first book devoted a lot of effort to establishing the three main characters - Bryant is the fish out of water in a new magical world, Devon is his supercool wingman, and Elizabeth is the manic pixie dream girl who's actually so much more. They all had energy and style and just leapt off the page. In this sequel, (and I guess it's not surprising), the appeal of the characters, the twisty nature of the plot, and the sheer mind numbing enormity of their sudden introduction to hidden but everyday magic, is just sort of taken as a given. We pick right up where we left off at the end of Book One, and never look back.
Even as a fan of the first book, it took me a while to get back into this series, mostly because I was trying to remember why it was I liked this as much as I did. A new reader trying to start with this book might not be so patient. And that would be a shame because this second book does finally take off. It opens with Bryant doing some cleanup from mistakes he made in Book One, which did not seem to me like a strong way to start. Bryant has to deal with his parents, who are in denial, and keep getting in the way of the flow of the story.
Finally, though, we get everybody on board for the adventure and we launch into new action territory. and at that point the book picks up and rewards us. Devon and Elizabeth perk up and start pulling their weight as characters. Bryant starts looking forward to the next adventure instead of angstifying. Bryant's deadpan funny and dryly sarcastic magical mentor gets better and better. And the set piece adventures become quite gripping. We have a huge nutty magical battle with an eeeevil wizard; then we go for a dungeon crawl, (with puzzles!), that calls on the separate skills of each group member. New and entertaining characters show up, and new future adventures are promised.
So, my bottom line was that I started this book in no small measure buoyed and comforted by how much I liked Book One, and then ended up being rewarded as this book built up more and more momentum. And I'm ready for Book Three when the author is.
(Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book from the author without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)
Displaying a firm grasp of how all lives suffer the same burden of the mundane without losing the excitement of magic and high-stakes adventure, O’Russell continues her fresh take on the trope of a young person who discovers they are a magician.
This novel is the second in The Tale of Bryant Adams series. This review might prophecy secrets from within the previous volume.
Having survived the battle against Thaden, Bryant Adams needs to capture the animals that he accidentally altered before they are discovered by normal humans; otherwise, the Ladies will have the excuse they need to take action against him. And his mother accepts that he must do it, but demands he doesn’t involve himself any further in magic so he stays safe. So he must choose: continue to learn magic in secret so he can protect himself from those who might hunt him anyway, or tell his mother how dangerous the magical world really is and risk being dragged away from everyone he knows without actually ending up any safer; a choice that fate will make for him if he doesn’t.
O’Russell opens with Bryant attempting to deal with the consequences of a mistake, aided by his friends and mocked by his mentor, confirming that—even after the significant victory over evil at the end of the last volume—this continues to be a story about someone who isn’t exceptional among their peers, fated to succeed, or otherwise “a chosen hero”. This return to normality, but normality for a magic user, sustains the sense of the fantastical that urban fantasy needs while providing an immediately recognisable similarity to the mostly annoying tasks of mundane life that makes that fantasy accessible.
Where the first volume was about a teenager thrown into a world that he didn’t realise existed, this one adds the difficulties of keeping that world hidden from those who might face or cause danger if they found out, providing a more nuanced perspective on the draconian knowledge-control policies of the Ladies and others without veering into justifying them.
In parallel with the more philosophical and emotional questions of keeping secrets and the dangers of knowing without understanding, this is a fast-paced thriller that uses the mystical to invigorate familiar tropes from heist and espionage tales.
Just as Bryant’s magic brings risks and secrets, so does Elizabeth’s ability as a seer. However, unlike the second volume of some series, this one neither rips the romance that occurred in the first volume apart at the first bump, nor glosses over all the issues by having love simply prevail; as such, readers are likely to find real tension in the difficulties the relationship faces rather than half the readership finding the experience played for effect.
Bryant is a sympathetic protagonist. If anything, his experiences since discovering magic is real have given him a greater understanding of how complex the world is, weakening the teenage certainty that can make young protagonists irksome to some adult readers.
The supporting cast similarly display further depth, with both Eric and Devon’s appearance of confidence being revealed as a mechanism rather than a product of arrogance or effortless competence.
Overall, I enjoyed this novel greatly. I recommend it to readers seeking urban fantasy where the protagonist is flawed but not embittered.
I received a free advance copy from the author with a request for a fair review.

Seven Things Not to do When Everyone's Trying to Kill You is such a good story. It's the second book in The Tale of Bryant Adams series (first being How I Magically Messed up my Entire Life in Four Freakin' Days). All elements that made the first one great are present in this one too, just amplified. :) The start is a bit slow, it takes a while for the action to start, however after few chapters it gets it's mojo back and the story gets better and more intense till the end. It's more fun, more action, more family drama and a lot more at stake.
Few months before, when Bryant started to use magic, few of his spells didn't go so well. There was a lot of damage, especially for wildlife. There are mutated squirrels and rats and all kind of nasties. :) Now Eric, his magical mentor is making him clean up his mistakes. It's like quite before the storm before he has to face the ladies. He tries to learn as much magic as he can, but it is hard to do while still in high school and having a curfew, not mentioning that his mom is no the biggest fan of anything magic.
The story is very gripping, I was pulled right in and in no time I was totally absorbed in the book. There is such a realness to the story. Characters are very fleshed out and fell so real, you can feel their age - they are young, scared, acting brave and making mistakes along the way. I felt like I was right there, walking the streets of New York and Central Park, joining in on adventures.
It's one of those series, that is great for binge reading. :)
This second installment throws Bryant back into the magical world of NYC, tasked with cleaning up the magical messes he created during his first encounter with wizardry. Bryant's unintentional humor and Devon's witty banter fill the story with lighthearted moments. Their friendship is a highlight, although a deeper exploration of Devon's family issues would be welcome. Elizabeth remains a constant source of support for Bryant, and even gets to experience her own heroic moment.
While the mentor, Eric, adopts a calmer demeanor compared to the first book, his occasional carelessness creates tension, particularly for Devon.
This action-packed adventure with a touch of romance is perfect for readers aged 12 and up. It offers a slightly darker and grittier take on the magic school genre, filled with fantastical creatures, magical battles, and plenty of laughs. A delightful and entertaining read, earning a solid 4 stars.
I seriously just love these books. Again, I listened to this one with my 3 kids in the truck and all of us loved it. The start of it with the captured creature was funny. I love how close the character are (yes, even Eric). I did want to see more of what happened with Bryant's dad's reaction but I figure there will be more in future books.
The narrator did a great job with the characters' voices again. Love hearing them and the romance between Bryant and Elizabeth is cute. I think my favorite character may be Devon. I just love how he is with the ones he cares for. He is ready to literally leap to their defense. Great series.
5/5
Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
See I actually read book one and then jumped to book three and book. One was such a snooze and just not good at all at least in my opinion I just it didn't catch my like attention so I had a hard time reading it and just staying focused on what was happening whereas with book three. Once I've read it I was actually really happy with it. I was paying attention. It was a little more interesting to read and just I was able to easily follow the storyline everything. So then I ended up was like you know what let me give book two a shot because if I like book three then maybe I'll like book two and I'm not going to want I it was kind of bad once again I had. There were a lot of times where I find found myself. Not really paying attention to what I was reading but at the same time I was at least able to follow the storyline which made it a little bit better in my opinion.
I received this from the author ages ago for a review, and I feel like crap that it went forgotten so long.
I enjoy these books. I read the first one a while ago and absolutely loved it. It was a new and unique take on magic systems and the characters were likable and memorable.
This book picked right off where the last one ended, and though I couldn't remember the details at first, they came to me quickly as I read through the book. The characters were still as enjoyable, though Bryant's worrying did get a little old. But he's still a baby wizard, so I had to give him some understanding about it. His friends were along for the ride as they tried to write the wrongs his magic did.
I enjoyed the book a ton. It's super fun and a quick book to read.
I received a free copy of this from the author in exchange for a fair, honest review. I keep flip flopping back and forth between four and five stars, but I think four is better. This was a fast-paced, goofy, and fun read. I love Bryant Adams' voice. The dynamic between the characters was energetic. I love how light hearted this is even with life or death stakes. I read a lot of angsty, drama ridden stories (and maybe write them to). However, it moved so quickly that I hardly noticed the story building until the end, which seemed a little too easy and anticlimactic.
I really enjoyed book one, but I think I like book two even more. Full of magic, adventure, and suspense, it did not disappoint! Bryant is a teen with his hands full. He’s learning magic from his mentor, but in the midst of it all, they’re in danger. Crazy, deadly lunch ladies, rat kings, a trap in Alice in Wonderland, and a swim in bacteria infested waters are just part of the journey. There’s something around every corner. And as desperately as he wants to protect his girl, she can pretty well fend for herself. This was no doubt a great installment and I can’t wait to read more!
The second installment follows Bryant, Elizabeth, Devon and Eric. The aftermath of what happened still follows Bryant and he continues to learn the wizardly world and how to wrangle the crazy creatures he created. The plot thickens when a witch hunter tries to abduct Bryant and the fun begins! Jam packed full of action, magical spells, and friends who stick together no matter what. The audiobook is narrated by Jacob McNatt, and he does a wonderful job portraying all of the characters. Very easy to follow along. If you enjoy YA fantasy and magical books then I highly recommend this series.
This series is really awesome. Like Harry Potter on steriods. Bryant Adams is a nerd who found out he was a wizard in the last book, got the girl and saved the world. The only trouble is The Ladies now want him dead. So he'll have to get them first. So with his mentor Eric, best friend Devon and his Girlfriend Elizabeth he's off to find the magical Library so he can save his life. But with Bryant things just aren't going to be easy. Love these books, so funny and the audible version is absolutely fantastic too.
The crew is dealing with the aftermath of their last escape. While they are happy to adjust to their new magical world, they didn’t count on all the lying they would need to do to keep everyone safe. The Ladies may still be after Bryant even if they have taken care of the mysterious animals that have popped up from Bryant’s magic. We learn more about the magical world and of people that have been looking after both Bryant and Elizabeth. A great installment and I am looking forward to seeing how they recue the books.
This second installment is pushing towards 5-star rating, for me, but I want to see how the next goes. Bryant is continuing to develop his magical abilities (as is so often the case in this sort of book, those abilities always manage to be enough even when confronted with a more experienced/knowledgeable opponent, which does always bug me a bit), and the magical setting in NYC is as engaging as ever. Was not expecting the twist at the end, and curious to see where it goes....
A fun, silly, enjoyable series. Definitely wouldn't recommend this book without having read the first in the series. I'm particularly enjoying the narration in this series. It's a great series for listening to while knitting, if you think you'd enjoy a bit of crazy teenage wizard shenanigans in NYC.
A spell-binding adventure to save magical literature that's been hidden away for years. Filled with twists of fate and new allies. I enjoyed this journey which is a mesh of The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Harry Potter.
I'll be honest, for the first several chapters, I wasn't sure if I would like this because it was so similar to Percy Jackson.
But I kept reading. There were good parts and quick prose and fun lines and I was able to stop comparing it to Rick Riordan's work (of which I have read all his mythology books).
This was cute and fun and a great take on magic in the modern world.
The blurb says it all! Bryant continues his journey in this magical world with his friends which is at times awesome and very scary. I loved getting to know more about his best friend Devon and his hidden depths. And no surprise, Eric has come to care about his young charges. Stay tuned for book 3! Great narrator.
I read the first one, but I haven't read this one yet though, but if it's anything like the first, then I will have to grab a very comfortable chair, and a large bucket of popcorn, and you may not see me for the rest of the day.
Read it and loved it! 4.5 Stars! It wasn’t quiiiiiiite as good as the first but it sure came close! I love how freaking funny this series is. I bought books 3 and 4 to read cause they’re that good!
Fun book. Good for fantasy readers, reluctant readers, and those with an interest in adventure. I think 7th grade through 10th is the best place for this.
*I received a free copy of this from the author in exchange for a fair, honest review*
I was pretty excited to read the next installment in The Tale of Bryant Adams, and O'Russell did not disappoint.
The story picks up some time after Bryant's battle with Thaden (the Battle of Beville, as it's now called), and he and Eric have been waiting for the Ladies retaliation while cleaning up any magic that has escaped. As usual, the banter between characters was highly entertaining, and there was a fair amount of character development (especially on Devon's part). Bryant has at least some control over his magic now, which in general, makes for a more interesting story, and I can't stress enough how great it is to see the secondary characters (Elizabeth, Devon and Eric) working on their own training/ problems instead of just following around the MC to cheer him on (which sadly, happens a lot in YA fantasy). We also get to meet Bryant's father, which to me at least, was one of the bigger mysteries from the first book.
I would have liked to see a little more world building, or at least get a little more background on the world of magic or Eric's past (does he have a family? In the previous book, he says he's only 20, and that his house was inherited, so he must have relatives. Who trained him?). Near the end, there's sort of a half-explained history of magic in America, which I'm looking forward to learning a little more about as the series goes on.
The first half of the book was a little slow and over-dramatic, but then the action picks up and doesn't stop. We're introduced to a secondary villain (likely to become a larger threat as the series goes on), and there's a lot of potential word building set up but left for another time. It did sort of feel like the story was headed in one direction then changed course to wrap up some loose ends from last time, and I would have liked to see that plot tied into the conflict with the Ladies a little more, but other than that, I actually really enjoyed the scenes in Kendrick's restaurant. They were full of really well executed fight scenes (who doesn't like a magic dual?) and we got to learn a few new spells.
The story ends with Bryant and friends setting out on a new mission, and I can't wait to see where it goes.
Minor Spoilers: The revelation with the prophecy, and its tie-in with the very beginning of the last book, was brilliant. Also, the bit where Bryant's dad finds out his son is a wizard is probably one of my favorite YA reveals ever. It was hilarious.
This series just keeps getting better and better! I’ve been pulled into Bryant’s world and I’m anxious to see what’s in store for him and what this means for his girlfriend Elizabeth who’s a seer and his best friend Devon known among the magical as an adventurer. Both Bryant and Elizabeth are honing their gifts. Devon wonders where he fits in through all of it. Thrust into the world of magic, they’re all finding their way with the help of Eric who has taken them all on as their mentor. Together they take on The Ladies to change the way magic is accessible. Another battle will ensue, but who will come out the victor?!
This is funny! A great continuation of the previous book. We start with Bryant having to clean up the mess he made by altering some creatures - in a great setting and with some predictably hilarious results. The action moves on around New York, giving us some amusing, or scary, insights into different locations. I nearly gave this five stars, but it's a little bit hard to take things so seriously when you've just had a great time reading a lighthearted story.
To me, this book wasn’t as strong as the first one. It was still entertaining though and the humor was once again great. I enjoyed the character developments and to learn more about the magical world. A good continuation of the story and I am looking forward to reading book 3.
