Reto lector 2024 PopSugar Reading Challenge 47.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee no
No no no no no

I think the author got a little desperate for action, so much so that he created situations that seemed forced. If he would have just let it be and let the challenges of learning their specialties and the drama around the Panthers act as the action then it would have been fine. But overall I think the important events that happened were interesting for the most part though.
The “assassin” was really predictable but that might just be because I’m a naturally distrustful person and didn’t trust anyone let alone the nicest character lol.

For the weirdos! Yup that’s exactly what they called their little group, the weirdos. The others were the losers and the best. Real original right?

As for the characters, I’m beginning to find Lasgol a bit annoying, he’s turning into one those heroes that goes into stupid situations alone so that his loved ones won’t get hurt. Plus he’s like ridiculously oblivious to the obvious. He’s a total Harry Potter. And he’s getting a bit overpowered too.
Egil was even more absent in this one but I’m really hoping he’s more an MC again in the next one.
Everyone else wasn’t actually important and there wasn’t much character development so I really don’t have anything to say about them.

Captain Fantastic and Ingrid just don’t belong together. He tries to hold her back! He leashes her anger and I found it so annoying. And he’s so righteous! Ingrid needs someone who will let her be her and not try to lessen her let’s just say less desirable and not so noble qualities that make her a flawed and normal human being.
As for Lasgol and Astrid I just can’t ship them for several reasons. The biggest one being that they really don’t know each other as well as they should for the confessions of love making. But I think that after they actually get to know each other I’ll be able to accept it.

The whole test thing was weird and felt unnecessary but I’m guessing it’ll come up at some point in the future.

And not saying a name but the jerk finally got what he deserved and it was very satisfying.

The end reveal is clearly what the next book is going to be about. And if not the next one then a future book. Also the dragon. I still hold onto my prediction that the dragon is going to come in later.

Characters come and go all the time in books but it is hard when one of your favourites who was there for 4 books as a major player is no longer seen and rarely heard from.  To me that is the saddest part there is no Egil.

I am impressed with the work that the author goes to in order to make the world I am visiting seem more real.  The animals really push things along in that respect

The take on familiars are very interesting.  I like the idea that they are not really like mages familiars at all but are a Rangers best friend and constant support and ally.

I am enjoying this book more than the last one and think it has some interesting areas that could easily be focused on more.  I think once they are out of the training this will make the series even better as 6 full books of training is a bit much and is wearing thin in certain areas.

I see a lot of great places in this book and love the training with the animals and seeing specialists but I think it puts too much emphasis on training so it really doesn't have a huge story that goes outside of that.

Must say the ending made up for everything but I have a feeling that the best is yet to come just with different characters that will gather around Lasgol, camu and ona.

This feels like the end of the first series and the beginning of another and must say I am excited to see where the author is heading with this series.

Amazing Book....One of the best books in the series.....Earlier while reading the 4th Book I had a complaint that the training scenes of the main character are lacking...In the fifth book, the author has rectified this and made the training scenes more fun. In his book, he has taken it to the next level and made the training scenes full of anticipation and fun...there are still some portion that is lacking and confusing but overall a great read and can't wait for the next book to be released.....

Enjoyed less overall but…

Of the books in the series to this point, this is the least. This author still is not writing to the level I typically read, but he has a good story with great characters. That is what brings me back.

This particular book didn’t seem to flow as well as the others and seemed to be closer to a collection of stories from this series instead of a flowing narrative. Nevertheless there were some good parts as well. And as this author can be depended on to do, he did advanced the characters personalities well.

Brings most to a head

I'd say this book brings everything together and when things get more serious. They've had great challenges and finally things are brought to a point.

This is the longest book in Pedro Urvi’s Path of the Ranger Series. This mostly about Lasgol’s Training to become an Elite Specialist Ranger. It’s 520 Pages, and Urvi never rushes the book.

ADVENTURE - There is a lot of adventure in this book and I like it. It mostly takes place in the Shelter where a lot of things happen.

MAGICAL CREATURES - One thing that brightens up the story is Lasgol’s Protector, Camu. Camu is a Creature of the Ice and is very mischievous and hilarious. He’ll crack you up and it’ll help the story flow.

HUMAN CHARACTERS - All the characters in the Path of the Ranger Series are really well-developed and I liked that. Urvi explains the personality and doesn’t shove it in. There are a variety of characters which makes the story not boring.

ACTION - There’s a little less action than I would expect in the Path of the Specialist. But, since it is at the Shelter, it probably might not have so much. So, because of that, I’ll give this a 7 out of 10.

SURPRISES - There’s a good load of surprises in the book and I like that. Surprises help the story’s pacing get better and the reader will also get intrigued.

CLIFFHANGERS - There are a lot of cliffhangers, which will keep you read. So, if you like cliffhangers, you’ll like this book.

RATING OUT 100 - A bit boring because there wasn’t really a plot. So, I’ll give it a 90.

Specialist

This book had errors throughout and was a little slower than the others. The plot has grown and mostly focuses on the training they do than anything else. The characters have grown and are still naive in a lot of ways.

On par with the rest of the series.

I did not guess the assassin.

The ending surprised me.

I enjoyed the Ona character, and I still like Camu's dancing. Sometimes he sounds like more of an insect to me than a reptile.

One other reviewer pointed out that despite all his mistreatment, Lasgol never grows bitter or resentful, and it's true. I'm not sure how realistic that is.

Also, Lasgol is the opposite of a Charlie Brown. He's good at so many things that some reviewers don't connect with him or else they feel resentful themselves.

Continuing the train of thought from my earlier reviews on this series, the teens' training continues to involve torturing them.

Also, as in some of the other books, it seems as if it's just going through a D & D book, reciting various possible capabilities. It's done in a better way, with more description, but it just seems to be reading character after character and what they're capable of, as well as the training involved. There's more story-telling in the training, and less in the listing of various specialties.

I didn't like that one character was punished without any evidence as to whether he'd committed the crime, regardless of whether it later turned out to be true. That just seemed to be unfair, without due process of law. Of course, in that society, it doesn't sound like they've heard of due process.

Those training to be assassins do have a dark side.

I've read the first six books back to back, fantasy escapism at it's best!

After reading book six, I was disappointed in that I'd correctly spotted the traitor within quite early on. However the twist at the end did catch me by surprise! I love the fantastical world created by Urvi and the animals and creatures which populate it. As each book develops so do the characters, they start around ages 15/16yrs and at the end of book six, they are around 20 years old. Their actions are more mature, generally, and physically they have also grown up.

It was good to read that the protagonist made a mistake, he is not a super hero, but although discovered, the promised chastisement was never realized. In some ways I felt cheated , in others quite pleased as I'd felt some of the training methods were becoming rather harrowing, and punishments extreme.

Does the author still maintain that these books are suitable for pre teen readers?

Now books can be read the same day, not awaiting the original writing and publishing periods, the original readers would probably have faced, is there a danger that some of the poisoning, violence etc maybe a little on the dark side?

Overall I've found this series to be 'unput down able' and would recommend it to over 14s to read.

This series is a lot of fun and this is probably one of my favourite books in it so far.

I love the way that the series is maturing and that you get to follow along with the characters as they progress from students, to rangers, to specialists-in-training. It's a really cool development of the plot that we get in book 6 and it's got me even more invested in the rest of the series than I already was.

We meet some new characters – some interesting in a bad way, and some in a good way – and we take our time exploring some really cool and specialised skills within the ranger specialties.

I also appreciate the way that Urvi wasn't afraid to split up the core group, having 3 of them essentially not in (at least the main part) of the story but keeping them in touch, or more importantly perhaps, keeping the reader in touch so we don't forget about them. It has me looking forward to the ways they might come back into the story in future books.

This is just a great instalment, full of fun and twisty things, and the specialisations were really cool. Cannot recommend this series enough if you're looking for a solid epic-fantasy style book that is reminiscent of the Ranger's Apprentice series.

Longer, Slower Paced, Experimentation
Some didn't qualify for specialist training, even amongst the Snow Panthers. Almost surprising after how often something miraculous had happened in previous books to keep them together. Added some realism. The characters not in specialist school did have a plausible mechanism for at least keeping them involved on the periphery through use of owl correspondence, which was an effective mechanism.

The various magics use for managing specialist assignments and progression was surprising. The use of allowing students to observe other students ongoing training was a nice narrative mechanism to be able to describe the training in the various schools.

Camu's continued growth, intellectually and physically, has been fun to watch and is progressing in a measured, realistic pace.

In the final pages the ongoing conflict with Lasgol's nemesis is brought to a surprising, and final end, while simultaneously revealing a new enemy or threat, the "Dark Rangers". Was very cinematic and compelling conclusion.

Adequate time was spent in the denouement after all the main characters had concluded their specialist training. The partings and upcoming plans felt sincere and worthwhile for characters we've been following for 6 books.

The maps

I praised so now I can point out a issue. I love maps. And you have beautiful ones. But, maybe it's changed but there are no references in the writing that show up on the maps. Where is Whey? Where is the capitol of the West. I could be wrong but where is the camp where is the advacened school, where where they when they when to war. A map shows and help the reader follow the story spacially in their minds. This is important to me as a reader. But I keep looking at the maps trying to see where I am. Judge distance topography relationships between places. I know it may be hard to make a map that actually follows the writing, as in he traveled through forest then open area. It doesn't need to be that specific. Only major features need to be on it. But places do. I have a general feel for the world. But not much in the story as far as main areas are on your maps. Whoever did them did a great job. But need to add points of interest as listed in the story. A map adds a lot to the story for me. Thanks

3.5:))))
