Hamling is a thoughtful writer with a keen eye for beauty and meaning in that beauty. Read The Gospel According to Hamilton if you want to appreciate Miranda’s work and its appeal to us through our need for God. --P.J. Hill, Professor Emeritus at Wheaton College
Although this book wasn’t what I was expecting when I picked it up, I’m happy I read it. I need to go back and watch the play/movie over. I love the grace the author shows in his analysis. The story is so tragic yet powerful and helpful as well. Eliza my new hero! We need strong female characters and history clearly shows that there was definitely a strong woman behind Alexander Hamilton. I would recommend this but to high school students looking at American history, Bible study groups and even use groups, and it features. Because of the strong female characters, I would definitely recommend it to women’s small groups.
The author swings back and forth, with insight and grace, from the musical to the New and Old Testaments. He guides us through the songs in “Hamilton” and ties them to theological posts in the solid ground of Faith. The motifs of the musical, and the underlying vision of Jesus as our ultimate momentum in History, are creative and offer us, both as the viewer/audience and as the humble disciple of Our Faith, a new way to view destiny and ask the ultimate question: “who will tell the story of your life?” Bravo!
