I struggled with Girl From Nowhere. The first and second half felt like two completely different books. The first half was early 2000s-style angsty/instalove YA romance (think girl at a new school falls for mysterious boy with mesmerizing green eyes) and the second half felt like one long and confusing action scene. Neither half really worked for me, and I didn't think they worked together.
Sophia's in hiding in Montana due to some trouble involved with her parents' dangerous jobs. Just your average teenager, she speaks multiple languages, is an expert skier and markswoman, a top student, experienced in hand to hand combat, and stunningly beautiful.
I did like the part of the book that showed Sophia trying to integrate into American life and make friends. However, despite all her many many talents and travel, Sophia sometimes seemed very befuddled by the simplest things. She also spent an awful lot of time obsessing about Askel, that mesmerizing fellow student. The second half of the book was a very long action scene.
I think the book would have worked better as "normal girl discovers her parents have a secret," wished the romance had been less off-putting, and thought that the action and suspense needed to be better incorporated throughout the story.

I did like the part of the book that showed Sophia trying to integrate into American life and make friends. However, despite all her many many talents and travel, Sophia sometimes seemed very befuddled by the simplest things. She also spent an awful lot of time obsessing about Askel, that mesmerizing fellow student. The second half of the book was a very long action scene.
I think the book would have worked better as "normal girl discovers her parents have a secret," wished the romance had been less off-putting, and thought that the action and suspense needed to be better incorporated throughout the story.

This was terrible—a book in the vein of Alex Rider or similar, an all-white cast (except for Charlotte Cartwright, a new friend who mentions her Korean-Dominican ancestry then drops off the face of the planet after Aksel professes his interest), mixed with a bunch of brand-name drops, a convoluted plot, and a Twilight-era romance. Might’ve done decently a decade ago, but I can’t imagining recommending this to anyone now.

Pg. 33:
His muscles spread out across his shoulders and down his upper arms like they have been chiseled from stone. He is wearing only a long-sleeved shirt; his chest is sculpted to it, and he doesn’t seem bothered by the rain and cold, or by me.
Which infuriates me, because I am bothered by him. And I can’t articulate why.
His muscular left hand tightens around the rifle hilt, grazing the edge of the scope.
Pg. 42-3:
Aksel doesn’t stop casually when he sees me. He comes to a deliberate halt a meter away from me—like I am either contagious or dangerous.
Aksel Fredricksen hasn’t been at school all week. I’d know. Because harder than catching up on eighteen months of missed schoolwork has been trying to not constantly scan the halls, curious if I’d see Aksel at school—which is why it actually seems weird that I haven’t seen him. Not once. Until now.
He’s even more strapping and formidable than I remember.
Strikingly handsome, his features are angular, with broad cheekbones and full lips. He looks like he’s been outdoors all morning. His light bronze skin is flushed and tan. In daytime, his deep-set eyes are even brighter—a pulsing, electrifying shade of green.
Why am I standing here—staring?

Plot:
Sophia has lived quite an exciting life. Since her mother and father are US Diplomats, she has moved around to countless countries and speaks multiple languages fluently. When her family moves to Waterford, Montana, she thinks everything is “over”. Her mother and father tell her there is nothing to worry about and that they have “retired”. However, her past continues to haunt her as she tries to acclimate to life in a small town. As she tries to fit in, she finds a group of a couple friends, and starts dating the mysterious senior named Aksel. Their spark is immediate as they both have skills that most teenagers would not. However, things from her past seemingly start to creep up. Sophia tries to push them out of her mind and away, but eventually she is forced to question everything she has ever known.
Personal Opinion:
This novel gripped me from the FIRST PAGE! I actually told my husband that it feels like I am reading/living in a Jason Statham action movie. This book is action packed with quite a few corkscrews thrown in! I honestly LOVED it! It has action, a little romance, and definitely some thrilling, edge of your seat moments! It is perfect for students grades 7 and up! Highly recommend! It is out next tuesday, July 21st, 2020, so go pre-order today!

I am totally enamored of Girl from Nowhere. I received a copy via the publisher, Bloomsbury YA and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I work a lot of hours each week. It used to take me a few hours or at most a day or two to read a book. Sometimes it takes me 2 weeks, if I am lucky and have not forgotten some of what I have read. Part of this occurred when I was working on my dissertation and I thought I will get to read more leisure reads now that this is done. But, no, work just replaced it. I have a pretty good reading month and I am happy to say that I honestly loved Girl from Nowhere. I am a big fan of YA Action books, especially those where the protagonist is someone the reader can like and admire.
Sophie and her family move to a new town in Montana which oddly enough is a place that my best friend has been harassing me to visit. I have no clue why and it is not really on my list but, it worked well in this book. Sophia has parents that have traveled the world as diplomats for the government since she was born and she is always with them. They have never really had a permanent homestead to stop at and take a break from. They move often. It turns out that something occurred during one of their trips which has traumatized Sophia. The author does a great job of having Sophia slowly tell her story as she meets new friends and makes a more permanent home for the first time. Her parents have gone out of their way to make a home for her by actually taking their things from storage and decorating their new house. Sophia is adjusting when what they appear to have been running from seems to have found them. Girl from Nowhere vividly introduces colorful characters, good and bad, and even makes the places Sophia and her parents travel into characters, i.e., Montana, Istanbul, etc. I do not know if there are any plans to continue Sophia’s story, but, I can see room for it and it also had a great ending if this is the last we see of Sophia. this book is a boring waste of time🙃 sophia is the most pick me girl EVER and every other sentence talked about how she speaks multiple languages (wowwwww) and moves all the time (awwww) and just never feels like she fits in bc she's so dIfFeReNt than everyone else. gimme a break bro. there's no actual plot, it's kinda just blah. her parents are annoying. even the romance didn't hit. it was sooo boring it took me over a week to read. would not recommend. 😒

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️You know when you read a good book and you can’t stop thinking about the adventures and the characters? In the best way you are haunted by a world that doesn’t really exist? Well that’s the sign of a good book to me. And this is it! The perfect summer escape, with characters that explode to life! I want to go back to Waterford - please get the sequel ready quickly! I could not put this book down, read it all in one long day and night. I can’t say it enough: IT WAS SO GOOD. THIS AUTHOR HAS THE MOST EXCITING & STYLISH IMAGINATION EVER!

GIRL FROM NOWHERE is an unputdownable YA thriller with twists and turns along the way with over the top suspense and scenarios that made this fun to read. Rosenhan’s writing kept me on the edge of my seat and the adventure, intrigue and great story plot was pretty amazing to read. I really enjoyed this one! Don’t miss this one.

I was hooked with this book from page one! This was such an amazing read that had fluffy romance and a mystery to it. This book is about Sophia who's parents are diplomat who moves to Montana to start a normal life after running so many years abroad. Sophia meets a cute boy named, Aksel, but the past starts catching up with her and she doesn't know if she will have to leave her normal life behind again. You're probably like okay should I read this book after reading the short summary and my answer is YES! I loved the author's writing and she packed an amazing adventure into this novel. The pacing was fast which was perfect for this book. The author answered all of the questions in this book which most don't. But not only the writing and plot were amazing but also the characters.
Sophia is the main character in this story who learned how to be a spy from day one. Sophia is a brave character who wants to make friends and have a normal teenage life. That doesn't happen because she meets Aksel who let me say it is just amazing! I made a new book boyfriend in this book because Aksel just swooned me. There were plot twists for the family which you will have to find out when you read the book! I can't spoil it for you! I can say that it was easy to connect with these characters and seeing the romance build-up throughout the book.

OK-I'll admit it. I loved this book. For me, it was the perfect blend of a somewhat fluffy romance (of course she would be able to attract the attention of the boy who is mysterious and aloof with all of the local townies) with the adventure and drama of a good thriller. This is something that I think multiple types of readers will enjoy and I can't wait to hand it off to my students. While it is YA, I don't think there is anything in it that would deter me from ordering it for my middle school building. There is violence (they are undercover CIA-esque operatives who are running and hiding) but nothing in the way of sex or language (besides some cursing in German). Highly recommend.
Sophia's parents have always been somewhat cryptic about their jobs with as diplomats, but now they claim to be in retirement. 18 months after she was kidnapped by an obscure terrorist cell, the threats have been dealt with and the family heads to a small town in Montana to allow Sophia to have a typical American teenage experience. But she can't help but feel that something is still wrong. Even though her parents tell her to trust them, that she's safe, her instincts say she isn't. As she continues to fall for Aksel, the local mystery boy, she begins to wonder what he is hiding from her. And where their paths have crossed before. Because there is more to the story than meets the eye. And not knowing the truth is a dangerous game.

The Hepworth's are no normal family. While traveling the world with her parents--US diplomats--Sophia Hepworth learns fourteen languages, attends thirty-one schools, and visits ninety-four countries in her mere sixteen years. After a life-changing experience, the Hepworth's give up their uncommon whirlwind travels for retirement, or that is what they have told Sophia when they move her to Montana. Sophia has never had a "home" and begins to embrace her new home, friends, boyfriend and high school. However, the past catches up with the Hepworth's and they are thrust back into the life they swore they left behind. Sophia doesn't want to leave behind all she is come to love, but must in order to get answers to the questions she has desperately been needing.
Girl from Nowhere is a thriller. It is almost impossible to put down. Please note that this story is extremely unrealistic, but once you can move on from that aspect, it is a great story. There are so many twists and turns to the story, what you think will happen, doesn't and what does is shocking. From the book's synopsis, and even from the one I wrote, the reader does not get a true understanding of the adventure and suspense; however, it is impossible to describe without fully giving away the plot. I highly recommend Girl from Nowhere to all readers.

Holy moly, this is an epic YA novel.
Sophia and her parents have just settled in the mountain town of Waterford, Montana. After years of moving from one place to another across the world, her parents have decided it’s time for Sophia to be a normal teenager. Or as close to one as she can be with retired diplomats for parents.
Sophia speaks multiple languages and is a sharpshooter. She has been trained to survive whatever comes her way. Except for one thing - Aksel Fredricksen. He is the hot ski racer who has survived his own tragedies in life, and keeps most people at arm’s length. Even Sophia. But when circumstances throw them together, Aksel and Sophia find that maybe they have more in common than not.
When I said epic, I mean epic. This is a YA novel that should appeal to people of all ages. It blends intrigue, international spies, high school girls and romance. Maybe the story is a bit over the top, but it’s a riveting ride. Sophia is tough as nails and an inspiration to any teenage girl. Aksel is every teenage girl’s heart throb. Sophia’s parents are doting, a tad bit helicopterish. Rosenhan’s ability to keep the reader on her toes is exceptional.

I read an ARC and I could not put it down!! Rarely do I read a book that immediately pulls me in and transports me to a setting that I don’t want to leave.
The intriguing writing kept up the “spy thriller” pace while simultaneously blending in Sophia’s relationships with parents, friends, potential love interest, etc...
In the best of ways, I felt like I was reading a story as if Jason Bourne was a teenage girl. The author showed the beauty and complexities of the world through a teenager’s eyes and emotions.
As soon as I finished, I wanted to open up to page one and start all over again, but For now I may add a few new cities to my bucket list and live vicariously through Sophia. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

“Girl from nowhere” is filled with action, love, and adventure. The only thing I didn’t like about it was the cover. With a storyline of a type of female 007 mixed up with a very handsome James Bond type, having a book cover showing a girl with tape over her eyes DOESN’T CUT IT! Come on Bloomsbury! There’s still a month left before publication, so PLEASE come out with a more riveting cover to draw readers in – otherwise they’ll pass up a very good book! I seriously couldn't put this book down! Every detail is so thoughtful and comes together so brilliantly in the end. It captured my attention from the very beginning and was full of excitement, romance, and mystery. Highly recommend.

Sophia had spent time in a myriad of countries all over the world, but now, with her parents' retirement, she would finally have a place to call home. Just as she was settling into her new life in Montana, danger came calling again, but she wasn't ready to give up being a "regular" teen just yet.
This was a perfect escape for me! It was the break from reality I needed, and I found myself totally absorbed in Sophia's life or death trials. More often than not, I can be found reading a contemporary novel, therefore, I was quite surprised by how much I relished this action packed tale.
I was truly fascinated by Sophia, her parents, and the lives they led. All the places they had live, the languages they spoke, and the plethora of skills they acquired all interested me. Reading about their training, and seeing that know-how in action was a thrill. Car chases, explosions, gun fights, and narrow escapes filled the pages, and I found myself devouring it all.
It didn't hurt, that there was a rather sweet and adorable romance built into the story either. Sophia and Aksel were quite a pair. There were sparks from the very beginning, which eventually grew into a full on blazing fire. He had aspirations of a military career, and therefore, also possessed a multitude of survival skills, which were put to good use during their relationship. He was a perfect match for Sophia, and I found myself really rooting for them.
Overall: The combination of romance, friendship, and action in this fast-paced tale had me hooked from beginning to end.

Fierce, thrilling, and action-packed!
Girl From Nowhere is a gripping, suspenseful tale that takes us into the life of Sophia Hepworth, a sixteen-year-old girl who after suffering a distressing event in an overseas safe house eighteen hours previously, arrives with her diplomat parents in Waterford, Montana to finally settle down. But running from the past is never that easy and even though she’s making new friends, enjoying high school, and experiencing an unexplainable attraction with the green-eyed, mysterious, Aksel Fredricksen trouble is, unfortunately, brewing just around the corner.
The prose is taut and intense. The characters are complex, intelligent, and resourceful. And the plot is a riveting tale of twists, turns, espionage, passion, angst, intrigue, loyalty, tension, terrorism, violence, corruption, and murder.
Overall, Girl From Nowhere is an epic debut by Rosenhan that features lots of exotic locales, sexual chemistry, battles, adventure, and action. It keeps you invested, engaged, and on the edge of your seat from the very first page, and if you can suspend disbelief for a little while, you will certainly be satisfied and highly entertained.

Girl From Nowhere is marketed as a story of a girl "running from her past." The initial pages of the novel take place in the Suburban United States, and much of the conflict in the first third comes from interpersonal drama - friendships, romances, Calculus class, and so on. I was settling in to read a quiet contemporary novel about trauma, when all of a sudden, roughly halfway through the book, things changed - and fast.
All of a sudden, what had been a middling read picked up in speed and became a thrilling adventure. The terrorist cell that Sophia and her family had nearly destroyed comes back with a vengeance - and a terrible secret. Suddenly, we're flying alongside our intrepid heroine as she crosses the globe in search of answers. Some of the reveals from this latter section of the book were genuinely shocking, but, in retrospect, had been well-established earlier in the book. As quickly as the plot wrapped up, it did so in a mostly satisfying way that felt truthful to the motivations and experiences of the characters.
If I had one complaint, it's that the first third of the book feels woefully out of place with the latter thirds. Moreover, as much as this book is marketed in order to hide the reveals of the later chapters, I felt that what I expected was not the book I read. Some of the other reviews I've read voice similar concerns. Ultimately, however, poor marketing should not be the metric by which I judge the quality of a book; marketing aside, this was a thrilling and enjoyable read that kept my attention and engagement from the slow start to the exciting conclusion.

I’m gonna try to write this review without using any all caps letters or negativity so here we go. What was that? I had such high hopes but from the very first page I was like “uh oh” First of all, it was basically twilight but worse. The quirky girl moves into a new town and meets tall dark handsome buff mysterious bad boy. She then proceeds to fall in love with bad boy on like the second page. BUT WAIT THERES MORE. On the following page, mysterious bad boys proclaims he true love for the girl and how he’s loved her his whole life. Huh? And on top of the romance, there’s a bunch of random adventure action movie things that I had no grasp on. My face the whole time can be accurately depicted by the following emoji: 🤨 Anyways I’m writing this review at approximately 11:14 at night so I’m a bit sleep deprived. Take everything I say here with a grain of salt. Maybe it just wasn’t for me. What gave it the second star was the fact that I could not put it down. Like a train wreck you can’t look away from. I think I’m probably just a book snob and can’t handle that some books are just supposed to be fun. It’s me. Hi. I’m the problem it’s me. Or is the book the problem? I guess we’ll never know.

Girl from Nowhere is a novel about a reluctant teenage spy. She's spent her life with her 'diplomat' parents learning languages, martial art moves, piano, and to hold her breath for four minutes.
Unlike most teenage spy novels I found Sophia a lot more relatable. She's never had a normal life. She doesn't understand cultural references, how to talk to people, or how to deal with the trauma of being kidnapped and chased by terrorists for 18 months.
Sophia's parents, like all spy parents made me mad, but I loved loved loved her relationship with Aksel and the friends she makes in high school.
Overall, I loved the plot and pacing of this book. As we discover more of what happened in Sophia's past her present struggles and dangers become a lot more clear to us, and made for a quick, exciting story.

Great debut novel!!! Tiffany Rosenhan has written a smart, exciting, romantic novel that teens and adults will love. The spy craft was thrilling and suspenseful, with enough creepy suspense and action packed fight scenes to keep the story moving. The love interest storyline gave me delightful new crush tingles. I’d recommend this book to both teen girls and boys alike, as well as adults. It’s also appropriate for older middle grade readers, I’d say 12 and up.

Girl from Nowhere was such an enjoyable read! I was swept into a fun teenage romance and then empowered by a strong female lead. Tiffany Rosenhan has created a story that hasn't been told before in which a female can be just as strong and clever as any man. Take pleasure in being transported back to a time when feeling butterflies for a boy was the most exciting part of your day. AND then become engrossed in a story of adventure. Super fun read for all ages.

I read it in two days - I couldn't put it down once I got to the third chapter. It's a fun read, great for teens especially, but as an adult I really liked it. It reads like a fast-paced movie and has a great love story that made me want to get to the end to see if they ended up together. A great escapist book that was a diversion from the heaviness of the world. Exactly what I needed right now. Highly recommend!

This is VERY different from other YA. Like a mash-up of romance and a cool thriller. The very first chapter drew me right in -- so intense. I just kept turning the pages. Plus, the author surprised me more than once -- I did not see it coming! That was nice.

Great summer read! It was an exciting story that moved quick, I read it in a couple of days. The characters are interesting, the romance sizzles, and the action is non-stop. I can’t wait for her next adventure!

WOW, so it starts with lots of action, has action in the middle, and ends with action as well.
The main character is Sophia, a high school student with amazing parents. Her parents are diplomats who are really spies. Sophia has been everywhere and done almost everything. There was a bear, an avalanche, a boy, and then several other spies and on and on it goes. OH, and the boy, what a boy!!!
I thought it was an ok read with a sort of spoof feeling. I did enjoy it, but if it was a series I would not be back.

After watching an interview with the author, I was so excited to read this book about Sophia and her world traveling life. It started off okay, but fairly quickly it jumped into Sophia obsessing over the mysterious boy she meets. His green eyes and her being incapable of breathing properly in his presence or when he touched her wrist, cheek, small of her back, etc. This went on and on for about the first half of the book, when suddenly the action picked up. I loved the second half of the book! Racing around Europe on trains, fighting bad guys, i read the second half in one late night sitting. It felt like an action movie, but had enough twists and surprises to set it apart from other similar books. I can’t wait to see what happens with Sophia in the future!
