I have a soft spot for these vintage editions of these Californian Field Guides first published by the University of California press in the 60's and 70's. Hedgpeth's Introduction to Seashore Life of the San Francisco Bay Region and the Coast of Northern California is a treasure, even among the many other excellent editions, primarily for his droll humour that slips its way into detailing how to identify sea urchins and red algae.
