VisuaLeadership: Leveraging the Power of Visual Thinking in Leadership and in Life

Rate this book
VisuaLeadership [noun]: The art and science of applying visual thinking and visual communication tools, tips, and techniques, in order to turn your vision into reality. If a picture is worth a thousand words, and finding the right words takes time, and time is money, then wouldn’t it follow that business leaders could make more money—in less time—if they simply took a more “visual” approach to how they manage and lead? Okay, it’s not quite that simple…but VisuaLeadership will forever change the way you think and communicate by showing how you can quickly and easily leverage the power of visual imagery, mental models, metaphor, analogy, storytelling, and humor to help you take your game to a whole new level. The French novelist Marcel Proust famously wrote that, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands, but in seeing with new eyes.” So, if your vision is to become a better communicator and presenter, a more innovative thinker, a more productive performer, a more efficient manager, a more effective coach, or a more visionary and inspirational leader, then this exciting new book will open your “mind’s eye” to a whole new The world of VisuaLeadership. “Have you added visual communication to your leadership toolbox? According to Todd Cherches, if you haven’t, you’re missing out on a powerful tool to capture attention, aid comprehension, and enable your team members to retain the information you need them to use. Packed with examples, VisuaLeadership will help you develop this skill so that you can become a better communicator, innovator, and leader.” —Daniel H. Pink, author of When and Drive “The most effective communicators and leaders use the power of story to influence and inspire action. In VisuaLeadership, Cherches demonstrates how every role can express their ideas through the use of visual imagery and visual language. This book will help anyone discover how to become a visual leader.”  —Nancy Duarte, CEO and bestselling author “I always say that ‘what got you here…won’t get you there.’ To help you ‘get there,’ executive coach Todd Cherches, in his wonderful new book, VisuaLeadership, demonstrates how we can all leverage the power of visual thinking to envision—and to achieve—a more successful future.” —Marshall Goldsmith, the world’s #1 Leadership Thinker and Executive Coach

Packed with practical tools and techniques, Todd teaches how to become a visual leader not just in a work setting, but in one's life. Provided here are methods to help us be more effective and impactful communicators. As someone currently in the job search process, I couldn't have found this book at a better time. I'm excited to put these lessons into practice in upcoming job interviews!

Todd breathes new life into classic teachings on visuals and leadership. He combines knowledge from over 1,000 business books with personal anecdotes to provide new approaches. Each chapter is a bite-sized lesson using visual images, models, metaphors and stories. At the end of every chapter is a review box providing the Big Lesson and a question that prompts us to think about how we might apply it to our own lives.

And as a fellow English Lit graduate, I appreciated all the literary quotes and references sprinkled throughout. From Shakespeare to Cervantes to the great philosophers and many more.

Humorous, entertaining, and inspiring. Simply put, this is a valuable guidebook helping us step into the best versions of ourselves. That is how powerful visual thinking and visual communication is.

When I heard about Todd Cherches’ work from a mutual friend, and that VisuaLeadership was being published, I didn’t think his book would be for me. I’m not a CEO like Todd’s executive coaching clientele, and I’m not a young student like those he teaches and mentors at NYU and Columbia. But I was 100% wrong.

One of many important lessons Todd teaches in his smart and honestly funny voice is that we can’t let the overuse of words like “leadership” make us numb. Everyone, no matter our role or job title, can tilt our culture in a healthier, more productive, and even kinder direction. And the way to do it successfully is to help people see it in not just a metaphorical sense, but in a literal one. This book is full of practical examples of how stories get told in a way that sticks.

If you are leading a team, or raising a family, or writing a book (note: I read this one TWICE while I wrote my own), there’s wisdom in Todd’s experiences and lessons that will help you tell the stories that matter most to you.

It has been said that, “a picture is worth a thousand words”. Isn’t it true? Psychologically our brain is wired to remember pictures easier and with much more clarity than listening to words or reading them from a page. Then why do spend so much time carving out the right message with words when we could be enhancing our leadership and lives by creating pictures that can be seen in our mind. Author Todd Cherches has written a powerful and practical book filled with examples to enhance your ability to communicate both in your life and in leadership. The book personally challenged me to be more intentional about how I use visual images, visual metaphors and stories to be a better communicator. And have noticed immediate results when speaking, in coaching sessions, and just interacting with others. I highly recommend the book!

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from a book about 'VisuaLeadership' and so was intrigued. What I got was a very practical guide to leadership and career success written with humour and in an engaging style.

The book shares numerous leadership tips to demonstrate the various areas of visual communication, such as stories, metaphors and models. As a result I took away both the importance of communicating in a visual way AND some great ideas for my business and career.

There are also some ideas and suggestions you wouldn't think of in a typical management book. My personal favourite was the importance of reading fiction and the leadership lessons to be found in novels, plays and poetry.

I loved Visualeadership and it's quick pace. Todd brings personal stories and anecdotes alive to illustrate familiar leadership models - in other words, he lives by what he shares. The importance of not just reading, or hearing the message - but the need to see it.

Excellent guide to communicating more clearly

“Visual Leadership” is an inspiring and practical book that helped me understand how visual thinking can make communication clearer and more engaging. The author combines stories, metaphors, and simple frameworks to show how leaders can turn abstract ideas into something people can actually see and connect with. I especially liked the “see it, say it, show it, and share it” approach, which makes the concept easy to remember and apply in real life. Whether you’re a manager, coach, teacher, or simply someone who wants to express ideas more effectively, this book offers valuable tools and inspiration. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to become a more visual and impactful communicator.

"VisuaLeadership goes down like a refreshing iced chai-latte, each chapter offering an energizing kick to your ideas and a zinger of spice to make even your most complex challenges simply elegant again. You'll savor these chapters for the rich and varied ideas within them, and between sips, you'll start entertaining a whole new menu of options to make leadership what it's been meant to be all along: visionary!"

Todd has a way of taking well-known concepts and bringing them to life in a whole new way! We’re familiar with the idea of having a “vision” in leadership - but Todd helps readers REALLY understand the power of expressing your ideas with visual cues and stories. Being a great leader means helping people SEE what you want them to see, not just theoretically understand an idea or goal. If you’re looking to become a great leader, speaker, or thought leader, this book is for you!

Todd does a great job of using his personal experiences to share how we visually see things and how that translates into life and leadership. I found some practical tips and tools to use when I am working with clients. I would recommend this book to anyone that is in leadership. I would also share this with my friends that are looking to learn more about how to effectively communicate in our daily lives.
