Bill Johnson and his wife Brenda (Beni) Johnson are the Senior Pastors of Bethel Church in Redding, California. Johnson is a fifth generation pastor.
Johnson was born in Minnesota in 1951 and became a Christian as a young child. Soon after, Johnson read seven books on prayer, which significantly affected his perspective and subsequent ministry.
Bill Johnson and his wife have three children: Eric, Brian and Leah.
Johnson speaking at a conference Bill Johnson and Beni (Brenda) began as singles pastors under his father at Bethel. In 1979, they became senior pastors of Mountain Chapel in Weaverville, California.
While pastoring in Weaverville, Johnson attended a 1987 conference led by John Wimber, founder of the Vineyard Church Movement. According to Johnson "A number of healings and manifestations broke out and I didn't know what to do with it. I didn't object to it, I wasn't opposed to it; I just didn't know how to pastor it in a way that it would continue and increase".
In 1995, Johnson attended the Toronto Blessing revival at the Toronto Airport Vineyard church. Johnson relates: "In Toronto I said, 'Lord, if You touch me again I will never change the subject.' So I went up for prayer every time it was offered. I didn't have anything dramatic happen, but I came home and said, 'I am going to give the rest of my life to this.'"
In February 1996, after 17 years of leading the Weaverville church, the Johnsons were invited to become senior pastors of Bethel. Today Johnson describes Bethel as a church where "everything we do either fuels revival or is fueled by revival." Under his leadership, Bethel left the Assemblies of God in 2006 to become a nondenominational charismatic church.
According to a recent book written by Johnson, "Face to Face with God", Bethel is "a church where supernatural encounters with God happen regularly, miracles are common, and the congregation has an infectious passion for spiritual growth." The church has approximately 1,500 members, and a School of Supernatural Ministry.
Their Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry has 1,200 students enrolled with over 370 from other countries. Johnson leads a network of churches dedicated to global, multi-generational revival, Global Legacy. Johnson has written a number of books and travels extensively as a featured revival conference speaker. Johnson is also involved with the Northern California Revival Fellowship, a group of north Californian pastors committed to revival.
Refreshing! Many have criticized Bill Johnson as being a prosperity Gospel preacher and will dismiss anything he says, what a tragedy. Personally, I think that is a cheap shot at him and a false accusation based upon clips and snapshots. This book not only reveals his theology of blessing it reveals a lot about the perils and processes of promotion. I grew in my understanding of gratitude and stewarding As I read through the pages.
Excellent first book of the year! I have made it a tradition to make my first book of the year one that recenters oneself with identity and purpose. And this book does exactly that. A gently convicting reminder that our minds should remain on divine inheritance rather than limiting ourselves with only the prosperities found on earth. “We must first realize that our significance comes from who we are (identity), and success as a result of what we do (purpose).”
Bill Johnson’s love for Christ and the Gospel is one thing I’ve always admired about him. “The power for personal transformation is found in a relationship with the one who is both the author and revealer of truth.” “We must regain our confidence in the power of the good news to transform a life, a family, a neighborhood, a city, a state, and a nation.” “The Word of God is best understood in relationship with God. The Bible is so much more than a book of principles that I can mimic to be successful. It is by nature and invitation to walk with the author.”
If you are an easily offended Christian, good luck. “Many believers have chosen insignificance simply because it’s easier to manage life from which little is expected. Tragically the church usually calls this humility… fear is often called wisdom by those bound by it.”
Divides kingdom from religion with the skill of a surgeon and soul of a loving grandparent
I cannot emphasize the importance of the keys I find in this book. As a person who was blessed with a particular skill set, favor, and education from my youth I have struggled with how to bless the body of Christ and bring this favor to bear in the institutional church. I have been often ( but not always) been met with insecurity, criticism, jealousy and misunderstanding by those I’ve attempted to serve. I’m not sorry for encountering those things as God has utilized it to train me in important ways. But it’s time to move on to an upgraded way of navigating this.
This book echoes Gods heart and convicts me to stop trying to apologize for the gift on my life or make it palatable to those who want to resource it for their particular brand (while still loving them). I can spend this precious energy laser focused on the kingdom and Gods assignment.
I feel like a bird let out of a cage.
Thank you Pastor Bill. I honor you deeply and receive this with an open heart
Ive read many of Bill Johnson's books and received a lot of revelations on living from the renewed mind of Christ. This book has been the most challenging because it takes all the revelations from his other books and puts them in the proper sequence so we can have the significance that God values. Having His opinion of us than our own will cause us to be all He desires us to be. Yes, will have to read this one a few more times because the first read planted the seeds and the following reads causes a harvest to share with others.
Excellent! I love how he explained all of the different ups, downs, rewards, and pitfalls through the lives of the biblical characters we are so familiar with. We become so familiar with these people that we miss the some of the important lessons of the narrative. This book is a recommended read for anyone desiring a leadership role.... actually, it’s recommended for everyone! I think I need to listen to this one often!
Such a good book. I love what Bill brings to the table. He writes from such a place of trust and obedience mixed with a knowledge of the scriptures! I love that he uses character studies to illustrate his points. Really going in depth through different Biblical Characters and how they handled promotion!
An exploration of how the live a life of blessing and significance without being corrupted and tripped up by it. Bill Johnson is always worth reading and this book is food for thought. Recommended!
