Sean Rosensteel’s School of Intentional Living is a smart, resourceful, planned attack on getting at what we each really want to achieve in life. This book musters some of the best ideas of thinkers who have addressed and tackled various aspects of their own destiny, together into a very readable game plan. The material is laid out in such a way that it’s very easy to digest, review and refer back to as needed. In the course of laying this plan out for his readers, Sean impressively shows how he himself has applied these ideas himself over just a matter of months to put this formula together and write it into this book. The result is inviting, and offers plenty of encouragement and affirmation to the reader to take initiative to experiment and apply the ideas in ways that will work for each individual in his or her own way.
The author shares some of his own earlier unforced errors in life, and shows his growth into a savvy, determined thinker with many great insights into what makes for an effective approach to create one’s best self. His ideas are easy to understand, adapt and - they are working for me! Despite my native resistance to organizing and planning, I recognize these ideas are making an exciting difference in my own work. The School of Intentional Living is an exciting contribution that offers a way to effectively jumpstart your successful engagement with life. So glad to finally get this, and apply it in my process!
Now I get it! I was fortunate to receive an advanced reader copy by the author. The title grabbed me, as I had no idea what it meant to live an intentional life. Sean's personal story is inspiring and relatable and validates his expertise on the topic of intentional living. I read Sean's book twice. The first time to get an overview (as he suggests), and the second time to actually do the homework and put his logical and surprisingly simple plan in action. Already, I feel more organized and in control of my days as I reset dividing lines between business and personal by actually scheduling around my own designated priorities! I am excited for this intentional journey I am embarking upon. Thank you Sean!
As someone who has read a fair share of books on self improvement, a few things set The School of Intentional Living apart:
1) The material is concise, easy to digest, and approachable for anyone. The magic of this method lies in the fact that the framework is one that the majority of us can relate to without having to “reinvent the wheel.”
2) The author gives the reader space and permission to apply the methods in the book in a way that accommodates their unique circumstances. In other words, the book meets the reader where they are rather than asking them to take a “zero to sixty” approach to changing their life.
3) The author is transparent and holds himself accountable to the methods he presents. He even goes as far to explain how the methodology presented helped him to write the book and how they continue to guide his future goals. I don’t know many authors, let alone people, that are willing to publish their goals and commitments in a book that’s available for the world to read.
I can see where the simplicity of these methods may cause a reader to discount their validity, but simple does not equate to easy. Application of what may seem simple at face value is often the key to unlocking potential. I encourage anyone who takes the time to read this book to go the extra mile in applying the methodology, if only as an experiment, and observe the impact it has on their life. I know in my own life that I will continue to go “back to school” on a regular basis with Rosensteel’s text as my syllabus.
If you look for a book that is as practical as a cook book, as relevant as the Bible, as personal as a diary ... then this book is for you!
Sean Rosensteel writes in a relatable, personal and authentic tone about the key elements for a fulfilled, meaningful life. It combines both: strategy and action.
The supportive short summaries and practical assignments after each chapter make this an ideal workbook for readers interested in personal development and authentic leadership. The step-by-step guidelines (including several handy templates that are downloadable for free!) help getting into life planning, without procrastination reasons.
I can strongly recommend this book. I'm a trained co-active coach and appreciate the talent of Sean to make understand key strategies into simple, actionable chapter that are inviting to take action.
I firmly believe this book should be required reading for all students in the 21st century. Our industrial age education system has gotten so far: this is the next level. 'Intention' is at a critical low in contemporary society; Sean Rosensteel brings it back in a brilliant, practical way. Life is too short and *distracting* not to give this vital information a shot: organization, clarity, inspiration, action, and true fulfillment are waiting on the other side.
Have you ever reached the end of the day and, despite being busy all day, wondered what you accomplished? It's time to attend the School of Intentional Living! Author, Sean Rosensteel, takes you through the steps to live purposefully toward achieving your goals. This is great, quick read packed with easy to apply guidance. I'm inspired to put in the (home)work to start living more intentionally now.
The simplicity of Sean's elegant life management system blew me away. After being bankrupt in every area of his life, both figuratively and literally, Sean started to cobble together a system of improving himself over the following 10 years.
Some of the concepts in this book are nothing new: tasks, projects, time blocking, etc., but the framework he's created so all function together along with school grades (what a concept!) are life-changing ideas. I'm still in the midst of incorporating each piece of this system.
I'm so happy this book came into my life at a time I desperately needed structure. Solid teaching, solid writing, no fluff.
If you think you hate structure but your life is suffering from any degree of disorder, GET THIS BOOK.

The School of Intentional Living has given me permission to say NO to those things that are not aligned with my own life’s priorities and expectations.
Sean wrote a wonderful, practical guide to taking charge of your life. I was impressed with his honest and vulnerable introduction. This book is excellent. I have known Sean for a few years through our local Toastmasters Club and was delighted when he told me he had written a book. I was even more delighted after having read it. It is definitely worthwhile. Sean's book is a reflection of himself...in other words, very authentic. I cant wait until he writes his next one!!
This book is clear and concise, avoiding the endless examples of before/after testimonials and anecdotes that can double the length of other self help books.
The author, Sean Rosensteel, has an impressive background in entrepreneurship, and is forthcoming about both his failures and successes, professional and personal. Cutting out all the fluff, he lays out a methodical approach to finishing all the stuff we talk about doing but never seem to get done.
Rosensteel gives practical advice we can all follow. He has studied many other organizational methods, and has distilled countless hours of his own learning into the straightforward approach in this book.
If you are someone who feels like your busy schedule never leaves you time to do the stuff you really want to do, this book is for you. Rosensteel shows that with modest effort and clear intentions, you could start taking more control of your life now. No need to wait for “someday.”
It’s also worth noting that the Intentional Living Academy, under Rosensteel’s leadership, offers great online content to support the book.
Are you sick of going through the motions everyday? Tired of always saying everything is "fine?" If you simply want MORE out of life, look no further. This book is for you!
"The School of Intentional Living" is a guide for self-improvement. I love the simplicity of the step-by-step process for improving the "GPA of your life."
This book really changed my perspective and helped me to hone in on the the things that matter most. (After all, when everything's important, nothing's important!).
I love how the book includes great online tools for those who are thirsty for more. This is a quick read and I highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed!
I read a lot of books in the Self-Help, Motivational & Personal Development space. This one impressed me on multiple levels: easy to read, pragmatic knowledge, with an actionable plan for implementation.
I'm always interested in the author's "back story" to assess credibility, perspective, subject knowledge, etc. I appreciated the transparent background & humility that created the foundation that the book is built upon.
A-Ha's & Head Slaps - Some of my take-away's were:
PROGRESS REPORTS - The value in assigning grades to Life Areas (Health/Wealth/Relationships). I've evaluated my Life Areas for years, but find that assigning a "grade" adds valuable emphasis on areas that require attention or deserve validation.
LOCKERS & BACKPACKS - Creating order to our Life Areas in service of creating focus & suggested tools for implementation (love the bonus resources that readers get access to).
STUDY HALL - Time/Task management systems for keeping a pulse to the week (quarter, and year) while consistently executing on top priorities.
LESSON PLANS - Hyper effective Project Management. I've struggled with effectively breaking down projects & making progress on stated priorities. I feel that the combination of time management & project/task management is really effective.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES - Groups/Memberships/Partners - creating great value by having synergy and interaction with like-minded people. Creating follow through with support & accountability makes sense to me.
The book was long enough to "go deep" on identifying my most important life areas - create a straight-forward action plan - and implement a schedule for confident & efficient execution. And, it was short enough to get out of my own head & do the work to make serious progress.
The School of Intentional Living" provides easy to read and practical suggestions for anyone looking to live a more meaningful and purposeful life. This book helped me create a plan for action and implementation to create my needed change to allow for intentional living.
I was privileged to be a given an advanced reader copy of this book by my friend and author Sean Rosensteel. When I first met Sean I knew that he was a special person and now he is the published author of the book "The School of Intentional Living." After reading his book I want to encourage everyone to pick up this book! From the very beginning he shares his mistakes (which we can all relate to) and how he figured out how to live his life to the fullest. This is the message and journey he takes you on. I view him as a guide throughout this book. His desire to share his knowledge with others is genuine. This is not just a read it book and then put it on a shelf. No, this is a book that requires input and action from the reader, but he also throws in tools to help you to achieve YOUR personal goals. If you want more out of your life then get this book today! You will be glad you did!
I received an advanced reader copy from author Sean Rosensteel. This is an encouraging read if you are trying to prioritize your life and your responsibilities. Sean's voice comes through his words easily and feels like a conversation between friends. I especially appreciated the practical and manageable tips for each chapter.
This book gives you an easy to follow process for realizing your goals and priorities, then implementing a plan to see immediate results. I love how each chapter has key points to easily refer back to at the end of each chapter. Sean has outlined this process to make it manageable and approachable, no matter what you are trying to focus on and achieve. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to live a more meaningful life!
I loved Sean's authentic and transparent discussion of how he transformed his life by becoming more intentional. In the book, Sean lays out a simple and practical approach for how you too can take control of your life. The book is interesting, concise, and easy to read (and re-read). "The School of Intentional Living" provides great content and practical suggestions for anyone looking to live a more meaningful, purposeful life.
This book was alright, I've read much better on intentional living. First of all, I didn't really feel like Sean Rosensteel was qualified to write this. Maybe that's a harsh judgement on my part but I felt like what he wrote about was not necessarily intentional living, but just goal oriented living. His way of life can certainly lead to intentional living but I wouldn't recommend this book as a great overview of intentional living. I would instead recommend Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less . That being said, Rosensteel still had some great insights and advice, just not necessarily about intentional living and more towards an organized, and goal oriented life centered around order, schedule, and routine.
Rosensteel's assignments he sets up every chapter for the reader. Don't waste time reading the book, these are the key takeaways listed at the end of every chapter: 1. Identify the areas of your life that matter most 2. Consolidate these areas to the best of your ability 3. Arrange these areas in the order of importance 4. Assess the areas of your life by assigning a letter grade to each 5. Calculate the GPA of your life based on the grades you've assigned in the previous step 6. Use a digital spreadsheet to assess the areas of your life if it makes it easier to track your progress. Feel free to download the same spreadsheet template I use and customize it to your liking at IntentionalBook.com 7. Brainstorm ways to improve your grades within each area of your life 8. Circle the ONE THING you could do over the next few weeks that will improve your grade the most within each area 9. Based on your own unique requirements, decide what you'll use for your "life locker" and your "backpack" 10. Purchase and register for the appropriate tools 11. Invest as much time as necessary to capture the information you came up with in the first three chapters and organize around your priorities 12. Create your own weekly review agenda. (customizable template at IntentionalBook.com 13. Decide which day and time you'll commit to performing it 14. Block out this day and time in your planner or calendar (if you usee a digital calendar, schedule a recurring block that repeats forever) 15. Perform the weekly review once in the coming week and pay close attention to the results you experience 16. Create your own daily plan agenda (template at IntentionalBook.com) 17. Decide which days and times you'll commit to performing it 18. Mark these days and times in your planner or calendar 19. Perform the daily plan as soon as possible, and pay close attention to the results you experience 20. Identify your worst offender (the distraction that interrupts your focus the most) 21. Research ways you can overcome it 22. Put a plan in place to reduce or remove it from your daily routine (or be more intentional about it by scheduling it during the appropriate time) 23. With your worst offender defeated, pay attention to how much time, focus and energy you're reinvesting into your highest priorities 24. Review all the areas of your life and identify one, two, or three areas where you could dfine goals for the year 25. Define clear, meaningful goals within these areas 26. Identify the one goal that could change everything. Declare this your "major" goal for the year and the others your "minor" goals for the year 27. Never overlook your "electives." You'll want to continually manage and improve all your areas of life throughout the year. Consider assessing every areas of your life on a weekly basis during your weekly review 28. Break your major ad minor goals down into manageable projects 29. Decide when you'll focus on each project and compartmentalize them by quarter 30. Break your upcoming projects down into manageable steps. Make sure the steps for each project are arranged int he appropriate order. Decide how much time you'll need to accomplish each step and assign a due date for each one. 31. Don't forget to benchmark the status of your projects during your weekly review and decide which steps you'll focus on for the coming week. 32. Create your own quarterly and annual retreat agendas (customizable template at IntentionalBook.com) 33. Decide which days and times you'll commit to going on both retreats 34. Block out these days and times in your planner or calendar 35. Go on the quarterly retreat once at the end of this quarter or beginning of next quarter and pay close attention to the results you experience 36. Go on the annual retreat once at the end of this year or beginning of next year and pay close attention to the results you experience 37. Review the areas of your life and decide which ares you'd like to improve most over the next few weeks or months 38. Compile a list of three to seven teachers who can help you improve your grades in these areas 39. Investigate each teacher to determine if the congruency factor exists 40. Where there is congruency, compile a list of resources offered by each teacher 41. Determine which resources are relevant 42. Where the relevancy factor exists, categorize these resources as either projects or priorities 43. Plan effectively so you can learn and apply your upcoming education 44. Are there any memberships, associations, clubs, or classes you could join in your local area? If so, consider joining one of these communities over the next few weeks 45. Do you struggle with your commitments? If so, consider asking a friend if he or she would like to meet frequently for the purpose of holding one another accountable 46. Is there a local book club you could join in your area? If not, would it make sense to start your own? 47. Are there online communities you could join on Facebook, LinkedIn, or other social media platforms that relate back to an area of interest?
I’m not usually a big self-help type reader, but after reading Fair Play and Untamed, I have been wanting to create more structure, intentionality, and joy into my life. Especially during this pandemic, I think many of my friends and I have found ourselves at an inflection point in our lives. We have all this extra time, but how are we spending it, and how are we taking the time to pause and think about what our real priorities are? This was a great reminder of the benefit of scheduling time to think about the important things. In a way, basically the Eisenhower matrix for your everyday life. The school references didn’t really resonate for me, it’s been so long since I’ve been in school, haha! But I found it to be a quick, practical guide to rethinking your priorities and time.
This book is very impressive, using the familar metaphors at school-age is very efficient and effective ways to remind how we can go back the school and prepare and/or try to best to get the high mark in every season.
Interesting is the best way to remind all of us about the time learning at school, and almost all people wish that we knew the tips and used the knowledge/skills to get better scores. Benchmarking, evaluation of current-state to know the SWOT (as we usually say/think), and determine how to overcome the biggest obstacles.
Practices and Homeworks are the nightmares but it still needs to improve skills and flexible for your mind, learning how to solve problems in creative ways. A learning plan with various weighs for each subject (in seasons) and small changes to reach the expected score. Thank to the author, I really forgot the weighs and not apply this to my life. Focus and avoid distractions/procrastinate not only the valuable subject but also improving the weakest subject.
Many things to learn in this book. Recommendation for all people.
The author lays our a doable plan to live your life intentionally. I especially liked his summaries and action plans at the end of each step in his process. I found out I was doing many things correctly but was missing steps and the organized processes that put them together. This book did do that for me.
I am so happy I read this book, and will be rereading it and applying it to my life! The author makes it so straightforward and clear, that this is the book for me to live with more intention! Thank you!
It’s his first book so I want to encourage him to keep writing. Our first books usually are not our best work. This one in particular is not my style. I’m more principle oriented instead of specific life strategy. I can’t work with formulas and that’s what this book is mainly about. There are some interesting principles behind on his recommendations but it’s so rigid that it losses my interest constantly. It’s a short book and easy to read so maybe it can be a great book for other people who like specific to-do tasks. I enjoy rather deep thinking on the whys. As I’ve said, it’s great as a starting point and I hope the writer keep improving for the following books.
It’s a decent book about goal-setting, but I can’t say there is much new info here, especially if you have read a lot on goal-setting before. I have my own system for annual goals that has worked well in the past (using project management tools and charts much like Rosensteel suggests), so I am probably not the audience for this book. The basic idea is just evaluating your areas of improvement/development, then scheduling, scheduling, scheduling and then course-correcting to stay on schedule. If that is what you are looking for guidance on and you haven’t read other books from this subject area, this would be a good book to start with.
The School of Intentional Living offers a clear, actionable framework for breaking free from autopilot and designing a life with purpose. Sean Rosensteel presents big ideas in a practical, easy to understand way, using familiar “school lesson” concepts to help readers organize priorities, eliminate distractions, and shift from reactive to intentional living. The advice is grounded and realistic, making it especially helpful for anyone feeling stuck or ready for meaningful change. A motivating read with tools you can actually use.
