Deep in a cult's mission to bring about the end of the world and under the careful supervision of a twisted spirit, Cyrus - by all outward appearances a teenage boy but harboring the power to cause natural disasters across the world - is kind of busy. Then a girl from his past, dreams of which have been plaguing him for years, re-enters his life.
Tuesday is the yin to Cyrus's yang, full of life and a reminder of the innate goodness humanity has to offer. Inexplicably the two are drawn to each other; every moment she spends near him, however, her soul loses some of its brightness. Tuesday doesn't seem to mind and one by one the dominoes begin to fall. The world is in danger of ending, and she is only growing closer to helping him set it ablaze.
Two years ago, Alexis Sundquist swore she'd never write another book. Since then she's lied twice, graduated high school (thank god that's over...), and nurtured a healthy interest in horror. She still doesn't know what she's going to do with her life, but hopes it involves sharks, rock music, or writing.
What Crawls Below is a twisted horror about Cyrus, a soulless boy, and Tuesday, a bright and happy girl. The writing was very well done, especially for a self published novel, and it drew me in immediately. The beginning of the book was probably my favorite part. I loved it when Cyrus and Tuesday were exact opposites. The twist at the end of the book was a surprise. I only caught on 1 page before it was revealed. The only reason I couldn’t give this book 5⭐️ was that the pacing was a bit off for me.
Overall, this was an amazing book and deserves 1000% more attention!
I hope this is part of a larger series, as reading this story left a lot of unresolved things behind. Overall the ending was anticlimactic. There just has to be more.
What Crawls Below is a surprisingly diverse book by Alexis Sundquist. Her third novel ( and what looks like the first of a series,) captures more of a young adult character based novel in spirit with a healthy amount of violence in comparison to her other work. Bringing in cults, demons, and a lot of fantastical elements that will speak to fans of Pendragon, Rick Riordan, and Harry Potter.
