Murder in the Mix #9

Lethal Lemon Bars

Rate this book
My name is Lottie Lemon and I see dead people. Okay, so I rarely see dead people, mostly I see furry creatures of the dearly departed variety, who have come back from the other side to warn me of their previous owners impending doom.

A divorce party. Of all the asinine things I’ve been asked to cater, this is at the top of the list. And the guests are some of the wealthiest people I’ve ever met. Everything seems to be going well, but right after the ex-bride and groom make a bonfire out of their legal documents, disaster strikes, and one of my lemon bars just so happens to be in the thick of it. A socialite is murdered right before our eyes, and the blame is quickly pinned on my bakery. I’m going to get to the bottom of this before it ruins me. And while I’m at it, I’m hoping to repair things between Noah and Everett. Lord knows I’ve already ruined things in that department—perhaps forever.

Lottie Lemon has a brand new bakery to tend to, a budding romance with perhaps one too many suitors, and she has the supernatural ability to see the dead—which are always harbingers for ominous things to come. Throw in the occasional ghost of the human variety, a string of murders, and her insatiable thirst for justice, and you’ll have more chaos than you know what to do with.
Living in the small town of Honey Hollow can be murder.

There is seriously no stopping Addison Moore. I just fall in love with this series more and more after every book. This was perfect in every way and I just can’t wait to see how this story goes. Addison has such an amazing mind and you never know which direction you’re going with her. With each book, she has kept me guessing at how it’s going to go and how the plot develops, and I honestly love that. Everything was just incredible and Addison really knows how to capture all the right emotions between the characters and you just can’t help but feel every emotion that they go through. Seriously, you need to pick up these books if you’ve not already, as it’s truly amazing.

Lottie has taken the next step with Essex and things seem to be going well for her, however her heart still lies with Noah. It’s hard on her because she has feelings for the both of them but whilst she’s hurting from Noah, he will always have a place in her heart even though his wife and an ex-girlfriend seem to have other ideas. However, that’s the least of Lottie’s problems as yet again she is hurled back into another police investigation, but Noah requests that she help him track down the main suspect as she’s managed it so far before the police department have. Will she be able to solve the case or is time truly not on her side anymore?

This book kept me guessing from the moment it opened. At no point was I able to guess the correct identity, or motive, for the murderer. Part of that could have been the overwhelming number of suspects there was to choose from, but I also suspect that the shenanigans and hijinks Lottie got involved in proved to be equally distracting to me. This book is another with an ending that left me gaping like a caught fish. I have no idea what it means is coming next, but I’m kind of desperate to find out.

Lethal Lemon Bars by Addison Moore is the 9th book in the Murder in the Mix series. This series is about Lottie Lemon. A baker with the abillity to see dead pets and when she sees them awful things are about to happen. I really like this series! As always Addison Moore's writing is amazing.

Okay, so I've made it to book #14 in this series, and I feel like I need to post a review for all the books I've read up to this point. These books rea all set pretty close together, so it's almost like you're reading one big, long story or watching a TV drama or soap opera. There are some really fun, interesting things in these books, and some other things that are problematic.

Things that I like:

The setting - Honey Hollow is one of those adorable little towns that exist almost exclusively in rom-com books or cozy TV shows. Think Stars Hollow, but in Vermont. It's the kind of town that has absolutely no major corporations in the downtown area. No McDonald's, no Walmart's, nothing. Everything is family owned. Every business decorates for whatever event/holiday/season is coming up or going on and everyone in town is always at every event. I'm here for that. If I could find this kind of town in RL, I would be in heaven. I'm sure that some place, somewhere, is like this, and I haven't found it yet, so that's why I'm saying it's almost exclusively in books or shows. But I do really love this little town.

Most of the side characters - I love Keelie and Meg the most of the side characters, but Lainey, Brittany, and even Cormack are fun and have enough quirks to keep them interesting. I'm not saying they are perfect, but they are a lot of fun and I want a friend group just like them.

The premise - I'm not going to do spoilers for any of the books, but this isn't really a spoiler, since it is literally the first paragraph in every book. Lottie's power is really cool and something different from the normal cozy mystery realm. She sees ghosts of pets and people who are there to help her solve a murder of someone they are close to. Love this idea. It's really what sets this series apart from the other cozy mystery type stories. The fact that her powers do grow and shift, and her reaction to them, is something that seems like normal reactions.

Everett - I really like Everett. He's understanding, has his own demons, is a calming force on Lottie, and really cares about her. He tells her things that he's hidden from others in the past, which just shows how much he cares for her. And he's willing to give her time to figure things out on her own. He also supports her in everything, but mostly in her investigations. He knows she's going to do whatever it is she's going to do, so he tags along to make sure she's as safe as she can be in the situation. He doesn't try to fit her in a box of his own expectations, but lets her be her own person, which is very refreshing.

Things I'm on the fence about:

Lottie - Yes, the FMC herself. First of all, I do like Lottie. She has a lot of good points, and she genuinely cares about people and is fiercely loyal to her friends and family. She is stubborn and keeps going, no matter what obstacles are in her way. I like that part of her. However, the other part of her is a complete mess. The woman cannot make up her mind about her love life and frankly, it's pretty darn annoying. I get that it's easy to be attracted to two different men at once, but if she actually sat down and looked at how each of them treats her, she would be able to make her choice. That part of her makes her seem kind of airheaded and jealous all the time. I really don't like that treatment of her, even though those are normal emotions and behaviors, and she is relatable. But given how focused she is in her business and the other parts of her life, it's almost like the author is afraid to make a choice for Lottie and make someone mad. Which just leaves everything in a long, drawn-out romantic triangle that no one really asked for.

Things I really don't like -

Both of Lottie's mothers - Look, the backstory of Lottie's birth mom having been a teenage who got pregnant and left her to be adopted by her "parents" is good. Love the back story and the support Lottie gets from her adoptive family is great. But both of her moms act like they are mean girls in high school and the only thing they have to do is fight each other over who has which guy as a boyfriend now. After hearing about how much Miranda loved her deceased husband and spent 10 years not dating, to have her having a revolving door of dates now seems a bit of an overkill. I do think that people can and should have meaningful relationships after their SO's pass on, but her relationships seem so superficial and juvenile. Carlotta, on the other hand, has every reason to distrust men (that we know of. We don't get a whole lot of background on where she was and what happened for the 29 years she was gone), but she just jumps back into competing with Miranda for every man in her life. It's very 1980's soap opera-ish. And really, it's somewhat distracting to the main stories.

The constant repetition - There are certain words/phrases/paragraphs that seem as if they are just lifted from one book and dropped right into the next. Do we really need the first paragraph (which is also the blurb for every single book) about Lottie and her ability to see the dead? Couldn't the author think of a different way to work it in somewhere in the first chapter or so? Why don't we get any background as to why Lottie's powers are suddenly escalating? But nope, just the same "I'm Lottie Lemon and I see dead pets." every single story. Also, why does everyone refer to Lottie almost exclusively as Lottie Lemon? It's not like Lainey comes in and someone always says, "Lainey Lemon!" I'm sure there are multiple ways to keep putting her last name in there, if that's what the author is really wanting to do. And the shoulder shimmy and hip bump. It's like those phrases are used 40-50 times per book. The books are not that long at all. There is no reason for someone's shoulders to do a shimmy every other chapter or so.

Noah - I know this will probably cause some hurt feelings, but Noah is not a likeable character. He is controlling and stalkerish. His and Lottie's meet cute was cute. I enjoyed that. But then, Noah got problematic. I enjoyed the beginning of his relationship with Lottie. He was her pick, and Everett was there in the background, but I was fine with Noah. UNTIL Brittany showed up. Do you mean to tell me in SIX MONTHS Noah couldn't find one second to have a serious conversation with the woman he said he was falling in love with to tell her that his divorce was not finalized yet? Oh, his bad. He "forgot" to tell her. Just like he "forgot" to tell her that he put a tracker on her car. Is that even legal? Oh, and cameras pointing at her front door? Really? Hello, stalker. And when Lottie, who did not want to be the other woman, tells him that yes, she has feelings for him, but she is done with him because of his wife, he refuses to accept that. Instead of figuring out his relationship with Brittany (and Cormack -but that's next), he continuously busts in on Lottie and Everett. That really bothered me. Lottie set boundaries and eventually, when things had settled down, she and Noah could have been really good friends, but he refuses to accept the boundaries. He constantly interrupts Lottie and Everett, breaking in whenever they are alone and making snide comments about Everett. You know who doesn't do that later? Everett. When he tells Lottie to figure out who she wants to be with, he even says no to getting physical with Lottie so she can decide for herself between Noah and Everett. But Noah? Nope, Lottie is his toy and he can't stand other people touching his toys. And then, he "accidentally" gets engaged to Cormack and "can't find a way" to tell her that they are actually not engaged. He takes her on dates. Takes her to dinner. Takes her to relationship counseling. Let's Cormack throw them an engagement party. And through all of this, he keeps telling Lottie that "he just can't figure out how to get Cormack to understand." Idk, dude. Maybe stop taking her on dates? Slap her with a restraining order? You're a detective. Figure it out. OH, and that brings me the worst part of Noah (if you can believe that). He doesn't want a relationship with Lottie. He wants to own her and to put her in a box or on a shelf. The whole first part of their relationship is him telling Lottie to stay out of everything and be a good girl and get back in the kitchen. Look, I get she's a baker and he's trying to keep her safe. But there is ALWAYS a point in the books that he realizes she's far ahead of him in the investigation and all of a sudden, it's fine for her to be involved. As long as she follows his rules and does exactly what he says.

So, I read through the first 13 pretty quickly and have started 14. But I think I'm going to take a break, because the things I am annoyed with are slowly starting to outweigh the things that I like about this book series. Hopefully, when I go back and pick it up again, I'll be able to enjoy the stories once again.

Deadly Desserts Indeed...

Lethal Lemon Bars is the 9th book in the Murder in the Mix series by Addison Moore and each installment is better than that last. Town baker by trade and reluctant spectral furry friend channeller by cruel fate, Lottie Lemon once again finds herself on the hunt for a killer in Honey Hollow. Now fully aware of her spectral abilities known formally as a supersensual gift passed down from her maternal side, Lottie attempts to solve this case with the help of a human ghost this time which allows her the ability to talk to them and send them off to spy on potential suspects. But as with each book, her abilities seem to be getting stronger and this ghost looks even more alive than any she's seen before and has a few new tricks up his sleeve. With the help of her newest boy-toy Judge Everett and his ex-stepbrother/her ex-boyfriend Detective Noah, Lottie goes on dangerous escapades in order to find the killer as quickly as possible while it seems that this time they might actually get away with murder. To make thing more complicated for her, she still has both Everett and Noah actively vying for her heart and she realizes that they both hold a piece of hers and that can't last forever. This book is incredibly funny, extremely charming and you can't help but get emotionally involved with the characters to the point of frustration at their crazy lives. Addison's writing is absolutely enthralling and you truly fall under the spell of the worlds she creates with her words. You won't want to miss this book or any of the Murder in the Mix series for that matter. I can't wait to see what happens in Honey Hollow next.

Lethal Lemon Bars is the 9th book in the Murder in the Mix Mysteries. As with my other reviews of the books in this series, there is spoilers to previous plots, but not to the actual mysteries.

Lottie Lemon is catering a divorce party, with the soon-to-be divorcee's dessert of choice, Lemon Bars. However, when the "Queen Bee" Vanessa St James dies at the event, Lottie must put all her detective skills to work to find out who the murderer is.

This mystery almost got the better of me! I have a pretty good track record in solving the mystery before the final denouement, but this one almost stumped me. Nessa St James was the ultimate Queen Bee and she had made a lot of enemies, so both Lottie and myself had a bit of difficult untangling all the suspects!!

Meanwhile Lottie's love life is also a triangle of a mess, with her relationship with Everett, and Noah still in the throws of getting divorced. As you know I love the soap opera drama that is Lottie's love life and I'm really, REALLY hoping she stays with Everett because I'm #TeamEverett ftw!

While I love the mysteries in this series, I just love all the characters in Honey Hollow. The author keeps the series fresh by adding new characters with each book, but not too many to get them all confused. Add in the ghosts that pop up and every mystery is like a little party. I loved Lethal Lemon Bars but I have to ask if every time Lottie caters an event someone dies, why would they hire Lottie?

"You finding a body at an event that you're catering? What would the odds of that be?"

I can not say this enough. I have loved each and every book in this series. They just get better and better as the series goes along. Lottie and the gang feel like part of the family. I am always holding my breath through the book wondering what Lottie is going to get up to next and then as the book comes to an end I am sad and waiting for the next book. Addison sure does know how to keep you wanting more from one book to the next.

When I read her books I tend to lose sleep as I just do not want to put them down once I start them. I have not read a bad book from her just yet.

In this book, you will find Lottie and the gang trying to find out who murdered someone at a Divorce party. Of course, Lottie is almost always looked at as the one who could have done it, but she always seems to find the killer before the Sheriffs can figure it out. She seems to find herself in some interesting situations while trying to find out who could be the murderer though.

This book is no different in Lottie and the situations she gets into. Well, they are way different, but what I mean is she always gets into these situations and some just make you want to laugh and others make you gasp.

I can not wait for the next book. You can read this as a stand-alone book, but I suggest you read them all as you will love each and every one.

*Spoilers*

Each book I read in the Murder In The Mix series I grow more attached to Lottie, Everett, and Noah. Their love triangle has made me question who I want to see Lottie with in the end and it has changed over time. I wanted to cry for Everett when he shared his secret but my tears quickly morphed when he told Lottie he loves her. I love how Everett has grown from book 1 and their coffee collision prior to Lottie's court appearance into a friend who was willing to risk everything to stand by Lottie & help her investigations. He quickly accepted her ability to see ghosts & stood by her, giving her someone she could talk to. While the murder mysteries change I think they really propel the relationships of the characters and that drives me as a reader to the next book in a series. Addison does a great job of giving the characters and storyline a depth that leave you feeling invested & hungry for what happens next.

Every time! Addison Moore is my hero. I really don't know how she whips up these books in no time flat! Each and every time, I am completely sucked in and fall in love with the characters.
The Murder in the Mix series has become a favorite of mine! I absolutely love Lottie, Essex, and Noah. Of course another murder happens and Lottie is right in the middle of it. Lottie and Essex are quite the team but I love how Noah never gives up and keeps fighting for Lottie. He fights for her heart and to keep her out of jail!
I am still hoping and holding out for Lottie to be with both Essex and Noah! Sorry ... Not Sorry, but I cant decide between the two and Lottie loves them both. I am really interested to find out what happens when Noah's divorce is actually finalized. Things are going to go down! In the mean time, I am here along for this roller coaster of a ride.

Living in Honey Hollow can be murder, but we know that, right? Well, so does Lottie Lemon. If you’re new here to the Murder in the Mix scene keep an extra eye open. There’s another murderer on the loose! But Lottie has her faithful boyfriend and Detective Noah by her side to help her piece this puzzle together.

It all starts as she caters a divorce party. The dessert in question? You guessed it. Lemon bars, apparently of the lethal variety. But everyone knows this isn’t Lottie’s doing. The problem with this murder is well, everyone hated that dead girl to begin with so who’s responsible here?

Leave it to Honey Hollow’s trio to blow their cover. There isn’t anything they can’t solve. You’ll be surprised who the lethal murderer is in this. I know I was! I was guessing and guessing. Stay tuned and you’ll be just as shocked as the rest of this mystery town.

First of all, I would love to say that I love that Addison ensures that each book can be read separately of one another, making sure explanations of major events are explained for those who may be beginning a book mid series. As one who has read the series from the beginning, it is amazing to catch up on characters as the series progresses and these tidbits help refresh on pieces of information we may have forgotten.

This book gives us further insight into Lottie’s relationship with “Mr Sexy”, giving us vulnerability and romance while satisfying our mystery craving so you cannot go wrong diving into this book. The only issue I ever face reading these books, or by Addison, is ensuring I can put it down for other responsibilities LOL.

I can feel myself getting very close to reaching my limit with these books......the bizarre word choices (men as comely?), the flinging of grammar to the far winds (I didn't think subject-verb agreement was optional, even this day and age), the juvenile approach to romantic relationships (why are all our main protagonists talking--and fighting--like they're in high school?), and the repeated misspelling of accoutrement, most of all (accouterment, both book to book and multiple times within books)......sigh.

If a certain someone weren't putting in a visit from The Great Beyond in No. 10 I'd just stop now. But I really am interested in what will happen next when it comes to that particular ongoing storyline. So, here we go!

Lethal Lemon Bars starts out with a whole bunch of crazy!! From start to finish, I absolutely enjoyed this ride!! Lottie has an awful lot going on in this book! From a deadly divorce party, a slightly less than helpful ghost, and one helluva ending. I was SHOCKED!! I am scared and excited for the next book. But, I just don't think I can wait!

There is sooooo much in this book I don't know where to begin.
Miranda Lemon and her obsessive, possessive fiance? The dead, social queen bee? Everett's deep secret? Cormack and the threats? Oh, and not to mention the shock value of the surprise ending!!!

Good luck putting this book down!!!

I have loved every book in this series! Lottie Lemon and her supersensual abilities are always a step ahead of the Honey Hallow P.D. This time during a very strange divorce party a social diva drops dead from a supposed food allergy. If it weren't for Lottie and her new little friend from the great beyond their probably wouldn't have even been an investigation. She already knew it was up to her to find justice. While I always enjoy the crime aspect of all of these books, Lottie's love life keeps me hooked. I think maybe it's because the crimes are always solved but the love triangle leaves me hanging and always wanting to come back for more!

The most intriguing part is below the surface!

Once again, death has appeared around Lottie's baked goods, and it couldn't have found a more worthy target! The number of secrets revealed in this story is mind-boggling, and it looks as though there are more to be uncovered! Lottie is presenting more and more as indecisive, greedy, and thoughtless in her personal life; I'm beginning to wonder if there's some mysterious element in play. I am also over the proofing fails in the form of misused words, and if I never see accouterments again it will still be too soon. It's a good thing that the story arc is sufficiently intriguing to hold my interest in the series!

Lethal Lemon Bars (Murder in the Mix #9) — Addison Moore (23 chapters) October 7-12, 2021

Lottie is contributing lemon bars to a celebratory divorce party when the most pretension guest of the party falls dead. Only this time, a critter doesn’t appear beforehand but a human. Lottie does everything she could to figure it out before said human dropped. I guess even having human help still complicates the process.

Lottie is still entangled with both Noah and Everest, even thought Noah has a wife and a girlfriend all ready. Still, she has to find the murderer or else her bakery will be tarnished.

Another decent story in this series.

A good distraction read.

No errors spotted.

Our favorite sleuth is back after another victim is claimed in their small town. With the help of her friends both living and dearly departed she sets off to catch a killer. While balance the emotions for two different men and run her bakery.

Addison has a way to make you giggle out loud, try and piece the puzzle together as it unwinds, and this time around I found liquid leaking from my eyes. I will say this over and over again any fan of cozy mysteries with romance and comedy thrown in will hands down love this series.

Now to try and wait patiently for Macaron Massacre!

Another murder has Lottie in it again. When a high society girl that had too many frenemies ends up murdered the possibilities seem endless as to who the actual murderer is. But have no fear! Lottie is there to get to the truth and serve up justice. If she can sort her heart out between Noah and Everrett, the two men that each seem to hold her heart. And when its done, Lottie sees someone from the other side who has her worried even more. Will Lottie lose someone close to her? Cant wait to find out in the next book! Love this series!!!

Lottie finds herself at the center of yet another murder. Everett and Noah both take turns declaring their love and trying to get Lottie to stay safe. Lottie is torn between the 2 men and it is getting to the point where she is going to have to make a decision. The murder and subsequent cover-up in this one were interesting. The perpetrator was someone who was not high on my suspect list at first. Good job by Addison Moore in keeping these interesting through the 9 books so far. The ending was intriguing and am interested to see where it goes from here.

More Deadly Party Desserts!

Lottie has to help solve the latest body count when someone falls dead at a party she’s catering. While this case is loaded with suspects, I really loved how Everett, Noah and Lottie’s relationship evolved. She’s not afraid to speak her mind and hold onto what she believes in. Great mystery and I’m addicted to all of the many characters that make up Honey Hollow. Can’t wait for the next one!

Another mystery full of twist and turns

I really enjoy the characters in this book. As always there were lots of twist and turns and the murderer was hard to figure out until the writer finally gives you the hint you need. I do wish Lottie will decide on which boyfriend she will choose. Their constant bickering is starting to take away from home entertaining this book is.

A Great Vacation Read. Lottie finds herself involved in another murder mystery. Her Cutie Pie Bakery and Cakery does a lot of catering and this isn’t the first time someone has died after eating one of her scrumptious creations. Too many more and I would imagine they will have to call in the FBI ;-) We still have a 3 way relationship between Lottie, Everette and Noah, I know who I’m rooting for. Time for the next deadly encounter.

As if a love triangle isn't enough to deal with, Honey Hollow's very own baker (and detective extraordinaire) discovers another body! It will take Lottie, Everett, Noah, and some sleuthing spectrals to solve this case. Addison Moore captures her audience with her writing, and delivers another story to lose yourself in!

I really enjoy reading every single book in this series! I love how I try to solve it along with Lottie and the boys! But with this one, it was a bit of a challenge. It’s like guessing who killed a “mean girl” from a group of meanies! and that cliffhanger? Eeep! One of my loved characters is back!

But will her skills be enough to solve the murder this time? The "victum" was a the mean girl and the suspect's are mean girl groupies. This one will leave you on the edge of you seat and ends ina cliffhanger!

Love love love!

Oh how I love this series and crave each new book, anticipating when the next comes out. Lottie is a fabulous character, full of life, smarts and humor. She has too many suitors, which can get old, she just needs to stick to one and call it done but all of it makes for a one of a kind series.
