Dragons Rising : Books One - Three

Rate this book
~Includes the first three full-length books of Dragons Rising, an epic fantasy series~

The world will drown beneath the waves…only the last mage can stop it.

Vahly, the last mage, is the world’s biggest disappointment. Raised by the dragons, she was born to become the magical Earth Queen, the only one who can stop the Sea Queen’s mad plan to drown everything in existence. But there’s one problem: Vahly possesses no magic whatsoever.

The oceans begin to rise, limiting the dragons’ hunting grounds and fouling their water supply, endangering their very home. Vahly can’t let the dragons she calls family die under the Sea Queen’s magic, so as a last hope, she journeys to a legendary arcane library in search of answers. When she finds an ancient scroll about a ritual conducted deep in the homeland of the elves, she gathers her dragon allies to find the king of that great, forest-dwelling race.

Who she finds is a handsome royal cloaked in dark magic, twisted and powerful. Arcturus. His memory has holes he can’t explain, and when they learn his king is in league with the Sea Queen, Vahly and Arcturus must band together to defeat the elven king and to gain access to the secrets of Vahly’s unique magic before the ocean swallows the dragons’ homeland.

Discover the wonder in a world of dragons, elves, and mages in this epic fantasy perfect for fans of Anne McCaffrey’s Pern series, and Elise Kova’s Air Awakens, filled with adventure, magic, and a slow-burn romance.

This series was my first introduction to Alisha Klapheke's writing, and I was really intrigued to find out what all the hype was about. Honestly, the first book was a bit of a struggle to me, since I felt it took a long time for the pace to pick up, but I'm glad I gave the following books a try because one can definitely see the author's growth through this series. I'd recommend this to any fans of the author, or of Fantasy, in general, that would like to read about dragons, sea folks, and elves.

For anyone else who might be interested, here are my individual reviews:

#1 Fate of Dragons: this was an interesting book, to say the least. It's been a while since I've read Fantasy, and to have a book that not only includes dragons and humans but also sea folks and elves was a nice surprise. What really helped was the slow(ish) introduction to each species (though you have to keep in mind the names and actions that are happening in the sea world, since they're parallel to Vahly's story). As for Vahly herself, I really liked getting to know her. However, even though I understood her relationship with the dragons (both the Lapis and the Bond Breakers), I felt that story only picked up once she meets Arcturus and starts her quest towards the forest of Illumahrah.
This is a story packed with action and full of descriptions (though not overwhelmingly so, they just help to set the scene). It has intrigue, great characters, and a life-changing quest. ~ 3.5 stars

#2 Band of Breakers: I ended up reading this book twice, one as an ARC, and the other through Audible.
(1st read)Story review: Band of Breakers took me a while to get into (or past the first chapter) but when I eventually did, I couldn't put it down. I'm glad I decided to give this series a chance since there's much more character development than in the first book, and I enjoyed seeing the author's writing grow better too. I liked following Vahly, Arc, and Nix in this new adventure (or in the next part of the quest for her to gain her Earth Queen's powers fully). Of course, it's not all peachy, and there are some plot twists and dangers thrown in there for good measure.
All in all, this book needs to come with a warning: it ends with a cliffhanger, so, if you can, read this series as a whole, since either way you'll need to remember many details and/or names from previous books.
(2nd "read")Audible review: I liked the story (my review of it is down below), and the narrator was good since she managed to convey the different emotions and nuances of the characters in her speech. However, I found it hard to differentiate between the voices of Arc and Vahly, and that in itself was kind of a turn off for me. If not for this issue, I'd probably be giving this audio a higher rating, since I liked Nix's deep voice, and Queen Astraea's cold one.

#3 Queen of Seas: Wow, this book left me speechless. First, because I flew by it, which is something I haven't been able to do so far with this series. If I'm being honest, I had pretty much given up on it were it not for the cliffhanger end of the last book, so, I guess that had something to do with my giving this book a chance. And yes, I'm really glad I did. I think it also helped that this third installment is written with much shorter chapters and is fast-paced, hence delving in the action that much faster (at least it felt that way for the first half, and then towards the last quarter. And no, this doesn't mean that there's a lull in the middle; but rather, that both the characters and the readers need that breather). Oh, and also, having made it this far in the series, I actually enjoyed the multiple POVs, since they added to the story.
As for the things I didn't like, I'd mention the violence: there's killing/dying of characters, as well as battles that ended in bloodshed, and even a torture scene that left me queazy.
Still, there's always the promise of hope, knowing that Vahly is that much closer to fully come into her powers. I honestly can't wait to see how the final installment of this series plays out, but I hope it's befitting of Vahly, Arc, Kyril, Nix, Amona, and all the fallen. ~4.5 stars

This series was about the last human on a world where 2 dragon tribes and the Sea Queen's warriors battle for the world.
Book 1 spent the first part of the story setting up the world and its main characters and how everyone hates everyone that is not like their people. It bounces between the main characters as the story unfolds as it builds up the the ending. Secrets are revealed in one group that the other group really needs to know and made me laugh and groan in a few spots. It was fun watching Vahly come into her own as she tries to save the world and all her dragon friends. Just a great story that I found fun to read. Loved Vahly's character too as she was not the typical hero.

Book 2 Vahly is back again and trying to learn all she can to become the last Earth Queen and save everyone from the evil Sea Queen. Like the first book it was fun and full of action and adventure. Loved the good and bad guys as their characters really felt real. Loved seeing everyone again and seeing how they changed from the beginning of book 1 to now. Just loved reading the book.

Book 3 Vahly is back and fighting for her life and everyone she knows again. I loved the action, suspense, and uncertainty of this series and this book especially. I love all the characters both good and bad as they are so compelling and fun. The story line was amazing as usual and kept me reading to the end just to see how evil the Queen would be and what Vahly will have to overcome.

So the human race have all been wiped out from the island of Sugarrabota by the sea folk, except for one little girl who was saved by Amona, the dragon matriarch herself and brought up by the Lapis dragon clan. Turned out that this girl, Valhi, was Blackwater marked, which meant that she was to become an Earth Queen, however she grew into a young woman but never came into her powers and the clock was ticking for the dragons and elves who were still battling the sea folk. Astraea the sea folk queen was ruthless and wanted to wipe all land life from the earth and fill it up with sea water for the sea folks use and because different dragon clans fought amongst themselves and both clans hated the elves the sea queen seemed to be all powerful. However, Vahli decided it was high time she sought out how to gain her powers and do her job to save those who had looked after her throughout her life, the only family she ever knew, her dragons whose fate was now in her hands!! A tale full of suspense and a fight of good against evil and the courage of a young woman and her team of friends namely Arc and Nix, an elf and a dragon respectively, who are to join her on her quest to come into her powers no matter what! Brilliant from start to finish, and I really did not want the book to end at all.

An excellent story in a grand style!

Three full novels that will delight all fantasy lovers! Vahly, the last human Earth Mage. Raised by dragons and adopted daughter of Amona , Dragon Queen of the Lapis Clan. Vahly is supposed to bring balance to the world. One big problem she believes that she had no magic. So begins Vahly's quest, with her best friend Nix and Arcturus an Elven Prince , to find her magic and how to use it. My emotions were tugged in every direction during this fantastic page turner. Believe me, you won't want to put this book down. With wonderful world building and unforgettable characters, this story will blow you away! I fell in love with the characters. Following them through danger, (I can't stress enough about the danger), betrayal, love and friendship kept me glued to the pages. There is plenty of action with twists and turns. This is an amazing series! I highly recommend this box-set to anyone who loves to read!

This is a fabulous series with a spunky heroine. Think Ursula from The Little Mermaid (actually an evil mermaid) vs dragons, elves, and the last human ... Vahly, the last human, has been raised by dragons. She is the last hope of the land dwelling creatures. She has the mark on her forehead that indicates she’s destined to be an Earth Queen – the one person who could defeat the Sea Queen, who is trying to drown the remaining island, and become the ruler of all. The dragons have been holding their own, but the Sea Folk are becoming stronger and have a plan to defeat the land dwellers once and for all. Vahly seeks out the elves to help her awaken her powers. There's lots of action, well-fleshed out characters, some clean romance. I read these individually, and couldn't put them down! I received a free copy of this book, with no obligation.

Non stop reading binge!

All three books are full of action, but it escalates as the story continues. Vahley grows and learns of the world. Her friends, both old and new help her to become what she was always meant to be. Full of dragons, elves, sea folk and a surprise being.
