Whispers of Nowhere #2

Fall of the Spectrum

Rate this book
The search for the artifacts continues in the sequel to “Whispers of Nowhere”. Gwen, still in mourning after the battle against Iris’s and Reeves’ combined forces, must push forward and do what is expected of her. Between honing the skills the artifacts have bestowed upon her and learning more about the Spectrum and those in it, there is little time for grieving: For on the next new moon, the forces of darkness she and her allies so desperately fought against have something sinister planned.

What, no one seems to know. Only that, whatever it is, the Spectrum itself is the target. With Apophis assuming control, revealing himself as the mastermind behind everything that has occurred since Gwen’s adventure began, there is little room for error. If they don’t stop Apophis and his forces from claiming the artifacts for themselves, all will be lost.

With the support of both Forneus and the Regulations Force Fifth Unit, Gwen finds a burning resolve deep down within herself, and with it, the desire to never let another life be lost on her behalf again. But will she be able to help recover the rest of the lost artifacts in time, or will the very realms the High Council has sworn to protect be consigned to oblivion—her world along with them?

Though I've marked it a 5, I give this one 4 and a half stars.

I liked it a lot, so it's not that there was necessarily anything wrong with it. I guess I just enjoyed the first one more.

That said, there's no denying the characters have grown a lot since the first story. Gwen especially has really come into her power, but not in a way that's sudden. It's been a gradual process, and I have a feeling she still has a lot more growth to go in both her skills and her personality before the series is done. I liked Phenex's development, and Forneus remains a steady, likeable character. I know a lot of people expect characters to change, but I think it's normal and even natural for some characters to remain steady. Forneus is dependable, protective, sometimes funny, and continues to be someone in whom Phenex, Gwen, and others can depend. Seeing his rare flashes of anger adds a bit more character, but his steadiness is what gains my admiration most, considering how long he's been around, and no doubt the many horrors he's seen in that time.

I look forward to seeing where the author takes these characters and the supporting cast in the next book. What dastardly plans will Reeves and Iris carry out, what can I expect of Lucas and his role?

An exciting read. I hope the next book is every bit as good.

Myths, monsters and one determined teenager, Fall of the Spectrum is the follow up to Shannon Rohrer's Whispers of Nowhere that fans have been waiting for.

Our hero, Gwen, has been through a lot since the start of her journey. In this novel she faces even greater challenges as enemy forces rally throughout the mythical realms. With spies in their ranks and a need for fresh blood after some crushing loses, the Regulations Force that has taken Gwen under its wing has much to contend with. However, with her growing powers and a new found purpose Gwen is determined to help. Gone is the girl plucked away from her normal teenage life; this time Gwen understands that the fate of her world and all the rest are at stake. The way her character grows, and her relationship with the rest of the Regulation Force's members keeps the reader invested until the very end.

With a fast but fun writing style and plenty of action, the author's ability to bring life to the numerous mythical beasts and Gods is truly impressive. Overall, fans of complicated worlds with interesting characters will only be disappointed because they want more!
