Sewing 101 is compact, not quite encyclopedic, but rather a cute beginner's guide. The accompanying disc (DVD) is a bonus, and the price is nice, about 12.00 USD. The book is spiral bound, so it lays perfectly flat. There are a lot of good photographs, which are very helpful. A good guide for a beginning sewer.

Mostly about machine sewing but some short parts about hand sewing which is what I was more interested in.

best for project tips and directions rather than general reference. enclosed spiral binding is awesome. contains very brief basic info on materials and tools with more emphasis on project instructions. detailed project tips for making tshirts, pull-on (elastic waist would sound much less toddler diaper-ish) skirt and pants, vests, half apron, and unlined jacket with a store pattern. pattern free customizable home decor projects include various pillowcovers with various closures, basic fleece blanket, baby tote that converts to blanket, round and rectangular tablecloths, basic quilted placemat, table runners and various curtains.
