The greatest teacher who ever lived, Jesus knew how to reach his audience where they were at. Whether preaching to a group in parable or holding an intimate conversation, he had an unequaled ability to get across the message that his listeners needed to hear.
His teachings in the Gospels speak no less directly to us, today. But so rich in meaning are the words of our incarnate God, so layered and profound his messages, that often we fail to do more than scratch their surface. And over time, our habit of superficial encounter with the Word can become self-perpetuating.
In Secrets from Heaven, Fr. Sebastian Walshe helps you break free from stale and familiar takes on the gospel, giving you new eyes to see and new ears to hear the inexhaustible depths of Christ’s wisdom. The Parable of the Sowers, the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son, the woman caught in adultery—all these and more come alive in fresh ways, revealing significant details and nuances, scriptural/historical connections, and testaments to Christ’s rhetorical and pedagogical genius that you’ve never noted before.
You’ll marvel at Jesus’ skill as an evangelist; but more importantly, you’ll be powerfully moved to faith and love just as those who heard him in person long ago.
Nothing Jesus taught was truly “secret”—he revealed the Father for all the world to see. But that doesn’t mean his revelation is simplistic. Read Secrets from Heaven and go deeper into the saving mysteries of his life and teaching.
This is really good with principles approaching scripture from the reading of the literal sense to the mystical/spiritual sense. Some of the deep dives into the mystical sense of some of the parables are pure gold.
I really enjoyed the author's insights into the different parables and sayings of Jesus. There's always something new to pull out of Jesus' words. Much to chew on.
This book provides the reader with an excellent analysis of the parables. I have heard them my entire life and I know more about them now than ever before.
This is a little gem of a book. It is a deep (and I do mean deep) dive into the parables and conversations of Jesus. Parables are the main way Jesus chose to teach - so it behooves us to understand what he was trying to tell us. This is not a dry tome where the author is analyzing the Greek, rather it is as if we have our own spiritual guide who is whispering into our ears as Jesus teaches with the parables. It's as if we are there, and get a true, deep, and beautiful invitation into the message of Jesus. I found it very easy to read, but I forced myself to read it slowly, as there were things I wanted to take to prayer on every other page. Highly recommend!
A truly incredible book that opens your eyes and reveals the miraculous depth of sacred Scripture and the words of Jesus Christ. I have read many theological books but this is such a captivating read, if you have ever been fascinated by the words and parables of Jesus, this book is for you as it shows the amazing levels and meanings behind the words of our Lord. Congratulations on a fantastic book Fr. Walshe, I’m very much hoping we get a Part 2!
Profound ,intelligent four step method for delving into the deeper truths in the Gospels. Using Fr Sebastian system persons can derive more understanding of life of Christ and apply this to their own lives.
Reawakened so many of these Gospel stories for me! I'm so glad I read this to get deeper spiritual insight into these often read/cited passages but that often only get treated at a superficial level. Highly recommend!
Thought this was a great book that broke down the parables and conversations of Jesus. I thought I understood what was being said in these parables, but wow, this book takes you deeper making connections I was never aware of. I'll certainly never look at the parables in the same way after reading this book. Great book to read during your prayer time.
