It’s the most important question we can Who is God? The wrong answer could spell our doom, but God has clearly revealed Himself and His majesty in His Word. Just as Moses asked the Lord on the summit of Sinai, we can approach God’s Word with the ultimate “Show me Your glory.” In Show Me Your Understanding the Majestic Splendor of God, Dr. Steven Lawson takes us to the mountaintop of divine revelation by distilling the Bible’s teaching about God Himself. Each chapter delves into the depths of God’s awesome attributes, teaching that a deeper knowledge of our Creator can lead us into intimate fellowship with and reverent worship of the One who made us for Himself.
Dr. Steven J. Lawson is the Senior Pastor of Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama, having served as a pastor in Arkansas and Alabama for the past twenty-nine years. He is a graduate of Texas Tech University (B.B.A.), Dallas Theological Seminary (Th.M.), and Reformed Theological Seminary (D. Min.)
A difficult book to review with the news of the author being removed from his Pastorate yesterday. There is so much good here. It expanded my view of God and I loved how the truth was applied at the end of each chapter: it was a blessing…
Reminded that no matter how well we can write/oreach - we must always take heed or we can stumble and fall too. Pray for and support your Pastor.
Who God is and What his characteristics are is what this book is all about. While I still have little grasp of God and his glory this book has helped me grown in that. The biggest stand out to me was the part of his wrath and Love. It is both a fear but great Joy knowing more about His character. His Glory is more than we can comprehend but I want to know my father as much as I can.
Steve Lawson takes on the task of showing his audience the glory that Moses ask God to see in his presence. The author goes through all the character traits of what makes God who He is and he does it effectively. It was a delightful read.
A good little boon on the attributes of God. Short sections make for easier attention given to each attribute by the reader. Sometimes a tad dry, as though it was a lecture…regardless, a very solid book.
In typical Lawson fashion, each attribute of God is laid out on low-hanging branches for the reader easily to grasp. If you want a thorough and illustrative grasp of the attributes of God (if there ever was such a thing), this is the book for you.
Such an excellent book! I always enjoy how Lawson writes in an easy to understand way. I do plan on rereading this book in the future and take time with it and studying through it. 10/10 would recommend reading
Do you want to know God more? Do you want a deeper relationship with Him? Read this book. 5 stars. Highly recommended!
"When we come to God in humble submission, desiring to know more of Him, He delights to reveal more of Himself to us."
"God is infinite in His being, and He far surpasses what our restricted minds can comprehend. The triunity of God is a subject so profound that it is a challenge to wrap our finite minds around it. While it is a truth that is far beyond our limited human capacity to understand, it is nevertheless necessary to believe in order to have a right understanding of who God is. Moreover, it is a truth necessary to affirm in order to hold to virtually every other Christian doctrine."
"The deeper we grow to know God, the higher should be our praise for Him."
"In heaven, the worthiness of God is forever being pronounced by those before His throne. The Father is being praised: “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created” (Rev. 4:11). This fervent praise is being lifted up to Creator God, who is worthy of the adoration being given by redeemed saints. He is receiving endless glory in recognition of the honor and power that belong to Him. He created all things by Himself and for Himself. For the whole of His marvelous works, He is being praised."
"God is not merely holy as others would be holy. He is not simply holier than any of His creatures. Instead, this threefold anthem proclaims that God is the single holiest being in the entire universe."
This book is a plodding, slow read, but certainly worth it. Dr. Lawson has wrought a book full of doxology, deep and refreshing. Each chapter addresses a particular attribute of God in extensive detail, drawing on Scripture from across the Bible and expounding upon them brilliantly. I particularly appreciated the time that Dr. Lawson has taken to include the original languages and make clear what the original meanings and contexts are. His wealth of knowledge is clearly expressed in this book, and the labour put in is wholly evident.
If I were to complain, it would be that there is a certain degree of repetition at the beginning of each chapter. Dr. Lawson reiterates the fact that the subject of that particular chapter is either 'one of the most misunderstood', 'one of the most key attributes', or 'a most note-worthy attribute', which became a bit of an eyesore. I think most of Dr. Lawson's readers will understand that all the attributes of God that he discusses are important, misunderstood today, and worthy of mention. His flow from first to third person is sometimes quite shaky as well, and in places where I thought it merited the opposite perspective, it was a bit disappointing to see such a removed or personal perspective.
However, I cannot fault the content whatsoever. Dr. Lawson has written well, and reminds his reader over and over of the surpassing glory of God, leaving the reader in humble awe of 'the majestic splendour of God'. It reveals nothing particularly new, but is a pressing nudge to the soul who often forgets of the awesome attributes of God.
Dr Steven Lawson is one of my favourite preachers. I often listen to his sermons at Trinity Bible Church of Dallas. This is the first book I have read, that he has written. It’s well put together, and accessible, not too technical. It is definitely Calvinist in theology. I am Lutheran so a couple of the explanations jarred but that’s ok, I expected that.
I would recommend it to long standing and new Christians.
As a side note, there were a couple of typing/grammatical errors which made me smile. 😊 I thought it was because the book is in American English but I think the errors stand in American and the Queen’s English (King’s English)
Steven Lawson in this work provides a concise overview of the Biblical attributes of God. His writing style is easy to follow. He is strongly Calvinistic in his approach, though I see that perspective as an admirable one. I recommend this book, especially to church leaders and members who have never worked through the attributes of God. Lawson's energy and zeal, mainly observed from the pulpit, are very much present in these pages. It's well worth the few dollars required to own it.
Like the most sound biblical commentary, there is nothing ground breaking here . Nothing earth shattering. God is sovereign. All glory belongs to Him. This is what Moses learned at the burning bush. This is what the Psalm, prophets, and New Testament all expound upon. Lawson gives Scrioture (a lot of scripture) to expound on the attributes of God. It notably relies more on scripture and less on church history than much of his other writing. Still a magnificent read!
One of my favorite books on the attributes of God! I loved the writing style and how it was all in bite sized pieces to help meditate and better comprehend the greatness of our God!! God truly brought me to my knees as I read this book, putting together all the truths I've read about Him in His word, and just being awestruck at the glory of God. God, show us your glory!!
Another great book by Pastor Steve Lawson. This book goes through the attributes of God. This book is similar to J.I. Packer's book Knowing God. If you liked that book you will love this book as well.
I believe every professing Christian should read this book. It is a detailed overview of who God is. It’s easy to understand, but deep & rich in knowledge! It is rich in scripture. It is truly amazing, terrifying, beautiful, & amazing that we get to serve such a wondrous God! Highly recommend!
This was an insightful book. I would do better with a kindle version instead of Audible. I keep wanting to sing the song “Show Me Your Glory” by Third Day. This book was part of a church Bible study in 2023 but I kept slacking with getting it done.
