A prehistoric virus. An infectious primal hunger. Some discoveries are better left buried…
James would much rather hang out with his friends than go hunting with his father, the survivalist. What starts out as another uneventful trip, however, takes a hard turn for the worse when they’re attacked without explanation. Panic stricken and running for his life, trying to get back to his family, James and a handful of other survivors are forced to fight an enemy they cannot beat on grounds they do not know. The odds are not in their favor, but if they want to survive, they must venture deep into the deadly unknown, right down to the heart of his ravenous horde…
The Complete Dead State series is an action-packed survival story focusing on fortitude, strength of character, and the power of community. If you like spine-crawling suspense mixed with post-apocalyptic grit, this is an edge-of-your seat tale you can’t afford to miss!
Derek Shupert is an avid super hero fan (Marvel over DC Universe) and lover of Science Fiction. Derek likes to spend his free time putting down on paper the stories that he has contained in his imagination. By day, he is an Inventory and Distribution Services Center Manager but by night, he writes. To date, he has published four books; two Sci-Fi, a children’s book and a technology consumer guide. He is currently working on two more books which should be available early 2016.
Derek lives in Sherman, Texas with his wife, children and various pets.
Not normally the type of book that I read, but this series definitely has kept my attention!
I have to say that I am not a zombie type of book fan. This book may have changes my mind. I read over 200 post apocalyptic in that last year, this was the first one to keep my attention for more than a few chapters. The characters are excellent, lots of action and a great read. Well done sir!
This entire series is action packed from the time the Neanderthal is found and then one doctor breaths in something while slowly thawing him out enough to be sure how old he is. 40,000 yrs old. What the doctor breaths in turns into what throughout the series they call chasers. If you git bit by one you turn into one. The only way they can be killed I’d for their head to be crushed or shot. The researcher that was asked to join the party stumbles on one. Just about everyone there are turned into chasers are killed. A pilot and 2 other including the researcher that is asked to come up there fly off one the chopper that came for them. The piolet straps both ladies to their stretcher. The one that was already at the center had been bitten and turned. The helicopter crashes over Portland. The chaser survives and starts creating havoc all over the place. This is in Book 0.5. In the next 5 books is mainly about a 15 yr old boy named James who goes hunting with his Dad. His Dad gets bitten so James has to kill him. He gets to the cabin where his mother has left a note that she and Cindy were heading into a safe zone in Portland. The rest of the book is about what all James and his.dog, Duke have to go to to find his family. I am not real fond of the chasers but the plot is good, you have to pull for James and Duke and everything they come through. This is probably the most action-packed, suspenseful series of the post-Apocalypse that doesn’t start out like most that I have ever read.
I do not know how I can finish this without pulling all my hair out.. I listen to audiobooks while I work and this one has pushed me to my limit with frustration. The story is over written with useless dialogue and babbling. Whoever is reading this from the get go...turned it into a Bill and Ted's excellent adventure and it was beyond annoying. The one thing I got from this book is if an apocalypse ever does go down...stay away from children (especially teenage boys) and untrained animals. The petulance and ridiculous decisions from the main character will make your eyes roll around in your head. The kid is like the angel of death with the chaos he causes others. The only reason I'm trying to finish this is because I paid $35.00 and don't have money to waste. I dont think im going to be able to persevere and I don't understand the reviews and resent that I believed them enough to think this would be a good series.
I've marked this as read as I have read as much of it as I'm every going to which was the prequel and the 1st part of the initial book. Very rarely do I ever give up on a book but this is some of the worst writing I've ever encountered. This is meant to be a horror book with tension but I spent so much time laughing at the awful writing and terrible ridiculous story that it broke any suspense and just made the book ridiculous, for instance there was a moment in the book that stuck in my mind where the character Maddison was plugging in her phone and the author made it into about 100 words saying something like "she used her trembling terrified fingers to take the USB phone cable and plug it into the phone socket at the bottom of her phone", well I didnt expect her to use her feet!
A fairly standard zombie series that lacks its own twist on the genre to really make it shine. The main character is an incredibly bullheaded 15-year-old boy which—while being a fairly accurate depiction of kids that age—makes for a frustrating read. Most plotlines essentially boil down to: Side Character - "Here's some sound advice." Main Character - "That's interesting but I think I know better. Oh no, things have gone horribly wrong!" Perhaps it's the fact that the main character reminded me a little too much of me at that age but, overall, I just found myself being annoyed at them more often than not.
A lot of soelling and grammatical errors throughout, hence the 4 stars. Also contradictions - being weak and wimpy one minute, then talking about how toned this journey made him, then weak and ‘meagre’ muscles the next. The same with his shooting ability - says how proficient he’s become with a range of weapons but then is unable to shoot the chasers in the head. Overdoes the ‘internal dialogue’ too much. However, story idea is good and I did buy the series.
James horrific journey begins when he and his Dad go hunting and his Dad is attacked, in a panic James tries to get to his family. Along with other survivors who are strangers but travel with him on his journey just because it's the right thing to do, along the way they have to face both the chasers and other survivors who are just plain evil. What will be be the cost and will it end up being worth all the losses along the way.
Great series, edge of your seat, nonstop action, and great characters. I did not want it to end and want to know more! What happens next? Good vs evil, zombies, and lots of them. Danger everywhere and children thrust into adult roles. Stay awake all night reading. The characters evolve throughout and altogether a good read.
This is a story of how James, a high school boy, discovers just how quickly the world can go from typical angsty high school drama to outright survival mode. Life on the run has a whole new meaning when you can't stop for more than a breath. The viral infected corpses crave living flesh and all the best intentions are out the window with each group of ill-intentioned survivors James encounters.
This book is full of exciting and adventurous zombie times, one zombie at a time and one more thrilling exciting adventure of humanities fight for survival, through the eyes of a young 15-year-old boy and his little sister to see the light of a new day without zombies
The series isn't bad, unfortunately with the main character so young, it makes it harder to beleive. Unfortunately Duke barks..... Way more then needed, almost feels like filler. Also, I think the author has an obsession with the word Funneled. It is used CONSTANTLY, like enough to play a drinking game lol. I'd still give the author another chance just not where is written about a young teen.
The series was great I got the box set as I needed book 5 & 6 to read. I enjoyed the series very much, it was very well written and enjoyed all the thrilling parts and the ending left me wondering if their will be a book 7.
Why write thousands of words and not have a ending ??? Good in spots but the dog always messed up. No way a 15 year old boy and girl can have as much luck as these two did ! Finished the book because I paid for it . Good reading for 12 year olds!
Outstandingly well written storyline and the plot twists and turns in many different directions and keeps your mind at full speed ahead to keep pace as the series of books are good quality reading
A great series from start to finish and keeps you hooked. Fast paced and action packed with blood and guts galore. A brilliant read with great characters and great story line right up to the end.
Aggravating, like Shupert had forgotten all the previous descriptions he gave of James, then all of sudden James is some BA from a Rambo movie.... I finished it, only because I had purchased it, and really hoped it would get better. It did. It ended.
It did have tons grammar problems thou the whole box set. But I still liked it. I hope the last book wasn't the final book to the series because the ending feel like a closing. Thank you for a good read
Full of excitement from start to finish. Flesh eaters every where. One teen age boy must first survive his father becoming a flesh eater and then try to save his family. He and his faithful dog set out to do the impossible.
Anyone that likes post-apocalyptic survival Thrillers will just love this series. I see that he has others that he has written all so I will have to go read them too.
